There’s nothing that says home more than the thought of mum. They are, after all, the core strength of the home. Whether it’s the smell of their cooking, the sound of their feet as they run around attending to the home, or their little touches, it’s the comfort of a mother that truly makes us feel safe and comfortable.

Mothers teach us to have confidence and belief in ourselves. Mothers know from experience how important it is for people to believe in themselves in order for children to be whole, strong and grow with a healthy estimation of ourselves. Their lessons in life gives us the space to believe in ourselves and reminds us that there is no limit to greatness we can attain or the great things we can accomplish. Mothers teach us the power of words. The words that mothers speak have power and stay with us for life.

This Mother’s Day (and everyday), our mums are so deserving of every bit of spoiling and recognition we can afford them. They are truly the unsung heroes of society. Yet, there are other mother figures that are not to be overlooked at this special time.

If you look back on your life, every significant moment and achievement is backed by the support of women who have acted from a place of love and encouragement. From that one special teacher that pushed you to achieve your goals, to aunts that are our safe space and even our older co-workers who are ready to celebrate our successes with us, maternal love is always a constant ingredient in our growth.

So, here’s to mum, biological or otherwise. They have shaped our world from the cradle by rocking, nurturing, and instructing children who grow up to make life-changing and history making accomplishments. For every president, volunteer worker, employee, technician, community worker, doctor, caregiver and even real estate agent, there is a mother or maternal figure behind them who fostered her child to reach his or her full potential.

WORKERS DAY

Workers Day serves both as a celebration of workers’ rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions played in Apartheid to achieve fair employment standards.

Workers’ Day acknowledges the bitter battle against Apartheid in which trade and labour unions played a key role due to the working classes being amongst the most oppressed at the time.
