The brochure you are holding heralds the start of your adventure on Inlandsbanan, the 1,300-kilometre long railway between Kristinehamn in the south and Gällivare in the north. Sometimes we are asked if Inlandsbanan is still up and running, if there is a railway service, and some people think it is nothing more than a heritage railway. But we are pleased to be able to confirm that the 100-year-old railway is stronger than ever. At Inlandsbanan we are actively working to ensure that the service remains competitive even in today’s society, both in terms of goods traffic and tourism services. Because, while we are proud of Inlandsbanan’s history and happy to share this with others, the railway also has to be able to meet present-day demands. The railway is being refurbished to be able to cope with heavier goods traffic and a new cooperation means that in summer 2013 it will be possible to travel by train all the way from Kristinehamn, something which has not been possible for many years! Our carriages will be equipped with wireless internet, and we are developing an information and travel guide app for mobile phones. All of this is being done to ensure your trip is as successful as possible. Did somebody mention the word ‘old’? Welcome on board!

Inlandsbanan 3
When the journey is the destination – travel on your own or book a package tour
Inlandsbanan runs between Kristinehamn in the south and Gällivare in the north. The 1,300-kilometre journey is packed with opportunities to explore the Swedish interior. There is plenty of time to enjoy all that the journey has to offer and you can create your own itinerary based entirely on your individual interests and preferences. You spend the day travelling and get off to eat and sleep. The train stops for food and coffee and to take in places of interest along the route. Inlandsbanan package tours are a simple and comfortable way to enjoy the complete experience. Both travel and hotel accommodation are booked and organised when you pay for the package. Selected activities are included but you are able to choose everything else that you would like to do on your journey. You can find all our package tours later in the brochure. If you would rather explore Inlandsbanan independently then try the Inlandsbanan Card, our own Interrail pass. It is valid for 14 days and you plan your own route, decide where you will stop and for how long. You might prefer to travel on one or more short sections of the railway in which case you can buy a ticket for each individual journey. We are happy to help you find the option that suits you best.
Travel on your own using our Inlandsbanan Card Using the Inlandsbanan Card – our very own Interrail pass – you can create your own 14-day itinerary for a very reasonable price. The card, priced SEK 1,795 for the period 3 June to 25 August, can be booked in advance. Two children under 16 travel free when accompanied by an adult, and seats can also be booked for children. Youths aged 16–25 and students enjoy a 25% discount while senior citizens are entitled to 10% off. Seat reservations are not included with the Inlandsbanan Card. If you want to ensure a seat on the train you can book in advance at a cost of SEK 30 per journey section. PRICE CUT! We have reduced the price from SEK 50 to SEK 30. If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card/adult. The card is also valid on the “mountain buses”, see www.inlandsbanan.com or contact the booking office for more information. Ticket per section, an alternative for those of you who want to travel a shorter distance, with the price calculated by the kilometre. For instance, a ticket for the Mora–Östersund section costs SEK 482. Ideally, you should book your ticket in advance, via our website, and we will send it by email or SMS free of charge. Of course, you can also buy a ticket on board the train, without extra charge, but remember that the train can become fully booked during certain periods. News! There is a train service on the Kristinehamn–Mora section from 1 July to 4 August under a cooperation agreement between Inlandsbanan and Tågab. There is a connecting service to/from Strömsund via Ulriksfors during the period 1 July to 4 August. For further information see the timetables.

Package 1 – Discover Inlandsbanan
A different side of Sweden The south has genial small towns with verdant greenery, cosy restaurants and lakes with water warm enough to swim in. In the north there is endless wilderness with salmon trout in the rivers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Sweden is long and thin – and fantastic! On the way to the vast expanses of Lapland you can take in Värmland’s industrial heritage, admire Anders Zorn’s paintings, have a peep in a bear’s den, enjoy an ice cream by the shore of Lake Storsjön or take a stroll around the museum Jamtli. In Gällivare the trip takes you to the top of Dundret mountain – a real high point! The view from the mountain is hard to forget.

DAY 1 KRISTINEHAMN You make your own travel arrangements to Kristinehamn where your package tour begins with an overnight stay. We can help you arrange connecting journeys by train – just let us know when you make your booking. Once you are in Kristinehamn there are several sights and excursions that are definitely not to be missed. Perhaps a trip around the beautiful archipelago on the replica 17th century sailing ship Bojorten or shopping in the town’s delightful boutiques.
DAY 2 KRISTINEHAMN–MORA After breakfast at your hotel you begin your journey north by train to new adventures. The first stage takes you through a historical landscape marked by the mining industry that flourished in the 18th century. The rolling forests are dotted with small lakes reinforcing the magical quality of Värmland. The train now leaves Inlandsbanan and travels via Borlänge through Dalarna to Mora.
DAY 3 MORA–ÖSTERSUND Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you make time for a visit to Zorngården (entry included) or the Vasa Race museum or a walk along beautiful Siljan. In the afternoon the journey continues by train through the county of Härjedalen. Here you will see the wilderness at close quarters when you visit a real bear’s den. In the evening we arrive at Östersund, Jämtland’s county town.
DAY 4 ÖSTERSUND Östersund is a true summer city with a great deal to offer. Take a walk to the heritage museum Jamtli Historieland and meet up with people and places from days gone by. Entry is included. Or perhaps you want to discover the city on your own? Bikes can be hired from the tourist information
Tip Do add an extra night or two to your southbound journey so that you can travel homewards at a leisurely pace but at the same time discover so much more. We will help you find the best solution for you.
office, where you can also pick up a map of cycling routes. Enjoy your bike ride!
Vilhelmina
DAY 5 ÖSTERSUND–VILHELMINA The journey continues, past the villages around Lake Storsjön and past Strömsund. This landscape of lakes and mountains was, for instance, the inspiration to Beppe Wolger’s film about Dunderklumpen and the giant Jorm. In Vilhelmina there is enough time to visit both the heritage museum and the church town.

Kristinehamn
DAY 6 VILHELMINA– ARVIDSJAUR We travel on through the southern parts of Lapland, taking a break at Storuman, where you can visit the station house, a listed building. In Sorsele we visit the Inlandsbanan museum, where we get an insight into how the railway was built more than 100 years ago.
DAY 7 ARVIDSJAUR–GÄLLIVARE Arvidsjaur offers a wide variety of activities, from fishing to canoeing or a visit to the Sami village Lappstaden. In the afternoon you embark on Inlandsbanan again and just before reaching Jokkmokk, you cross the Arctic Circle, where the train makes a stop. On the way to Gällivare you travel through the Laponia World Heritage Site. From Gällivare we take a coach to the summit of Dundret, where you can enjoy the most astounding views in the light summer night. The midnight sun is visible here for a whole month. (tours until 4/8)
DAY 8 GÄLLIVARE For those who have opted to finish the journey in Gällivare, the tour ends after breakfast. You are welcome to stay on and see more of the area’s rich heritage and beautiful nature. You could visit Europe’s largest copper mine Aitik, for instance, or go for a pleasant hike on Dundret mountain.
DAY 9 GÄLLIVARE–ÖSTERSUND After an early breakfast, the journey turns back south towards Östersund. The scenery actually looks different seen in “reverse order”.
DAY 10 ÖSTERSUND– MORA/KRISTINEHAMN This last leg of the journey south with Inlandsbanan marks the end of the tour.

Package 2 – Inlandsbanan & Hurtigruten
Once-in-alifetime journey
The journey that begins in Dalarna, at the heart of Sweden, then takes you up through the Finnmarken region towards mountain tops, primeval forests and glaciers, a wild landscape where reindeer are a common sight. The train journey then carries on further north, past the Arctic Circle, past the most northerly city in Sweden, and all the way out to the Norwegian coast, transforming your window-gazing into a live nature documentary. Once onboard the venerable Hurtigruten, you will be able to breathe in the pleasant sea air all the way down to Trondheim. The bright blue fjords shimmer between high mountains, the gulls cry in the sky above the small fishing villages and the Trollfjord really lives up to its name.

We can help you arrange connecting journeys by train – just let us know when you make your booking. The Mora area has culture and activities to suit everyone. For example, you could visit Zorngården or the Vasa Race museum, or have a swim in Lake Siljan at the beach in Mora.
DAY 2 MORA–ÖSTERSUND Today you climb aboard the train for the first stage of your journey on Inlandsbanan. The train will slow down as we pass the waterfalls Storstupet and Helvetesfallet, which were used for timber floating, to allow you to admire nature’s own drama. You will also be able to visit – and perhaps even crawl into – a real bear’s den by the railway. The journey ends in Östersund. Why not go for a walk along Lake Storsjön.
DAY 3 ÖSTERSUND–ARVIDSJAUR From Östersund the journey continues north. You can catch a quick glimpse of Ångermanland before we enter Sweden’s largest province – Lapland. Here you are surrounded by vast areas of forests, mountains and rushing water. This is also reindeer country so don’t be surprised if you see reindeer, moose and bears along the tracks. The train pulls in at Arvidsjaur in the afternoon, which allows you time to visit the Sami village Lappstaden.
DAY 4 ARVIDSJAUR–GÄLLIVARE The morning is free for you to spend as you wish. In the afternoon you will be crossing the Arctic Circle and travelling through part of the national park and World Heritage Site Laponia, which has mountains, lakes, delta landscapes, ancient forests and glaciers. You are looking at a landscape imbued with Sami heritage, inhabited since the Ice Age and home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including many endangered species. After a late arrival in Gällivare, you will go by coach for an evening trip to the summit of Dundret to admire the astounding beauty of the landscape bathed in the light of the summer night. Enjoy the unique surroundings (until 4/8).

You travel past the ore fields of Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, and on towards Abisko national park with the Kebnekaise mountain as backdrop. Take the opportunity to go on shore and explore on your own.
DAY 7 HURTIGRUTEN Today you will cruise along the Helgeland coastline with more than 1,000 islands and numerous fishing hamlets. In the morning you will cross the Arctic Circle on the way south and also see the “Seven Sisters” – seven beautiful mountain tops that are 1,000 metres tall.

Travelling with the Inlandsbanan Card
Discover more!
The Inlandsbanan Card is your ticket to a wealth of different experiences. Visit Kristinehamn and the Lake Vänern archipelago, which has a Picasso sculpture as a navigation point. Go canoeing on the Bergslagen canal, following the route taken by iron in the days before the railway was built. Visit mines and search for minerals in one of the world’s most mineral-rich areas. Learn more about the hard lives of the navvies on the railway and have a go at pushing an inspection trolley yourself.

Or why not hire a car or take a bus up the mountain to see and absorb the magnificence of the mountains at close quarters. This is an amazing freedom which means that everyone can get close to Sweden’s superb nature and culture and can experience it for themselves. However, this freedom brings with it responsibilities – so please be careful not to damage or disturb the animals and nature you visit and show respect to landowners and other people in the countryside. You can read more about the right of public access at www.allemansratten.se
please see www.inlandsbanan.com or contact the booking office.

Let your curiosity lead the way, you are your own tour leader! Let your inner explorer take over and be your own tour leader. Get the best out of most things on your journey with Inlandsbanan. The tourist information offices in the places along the way are happy to help and have expert knowledge of what there is to see and discover in the municipalities. They can offer tips that help make your trip as full of experiences and as memorable as you would like it to be. Let your adventure begin straightaway; on pages 31–55 you can read about what there is to see and discover in the various municipalities along Inlandsbanan.
Sights with a difference You can expect to see some slightly unusual things on your journey. From wild animals along the railway line to an abandoned bear’s den. We will stop there and the train host will take you out into the forest to tell you more about the bears and their way of life. You can even crawl into the den, if you are small enough, and brave enough. We will also stop to have a look at selected museums on the journey with Inlandsbanan. At the railway station in Sorsele you can take a journey in time through the 100-year history of Inlandsbanan. Meet navvies, smallholders, protestors and other people along the railway. At the Navvy Museum in the Moskosel station building you can learn about the everyday lives of the navvies. You can also view and buy local handicrafts before continuing the journey. In Långbans Gruvby, mining has been taking place since the 16th century. Here you can see exciting exhibitions and an old industrial setting with foundry and workers’ cottages. Lesjöfors is an industrial heritage museum that also provides an authentic vision of a bygone society. The settings make you feel as if you are stepping back into another time.
The train host – your friend onboard the train All Inlandsbanan trains and coaches have knowledgeable, helpful train hosts. They will help you with tickets and will take care of orders for meals and snacks. They are there for you and if possible will help you resolve practical issues. They will tell you about the places and scenery through which you are travelling. The hosts remain onboard the train/coach and do not accompany you on excursions or to your accommodation.
Souvenirs! At our shop at the station in Östersund you can buy train tickets and get more information, but you can also find brochures about many municipalities along Inlandsbanan and pick up some souvenirs. We stock a number of books about Inlandsbanan, ranging from travel guides to beautifully illustrated and historical guides. A book makes a perfect present, as well as being something you buy as a memento of the journey. The shop also sells our cute mascots – the dancing elk and bear that have long been part of the Inlandsbanan brand. You can also find environmentally friendly bags, T-shirts, postcards, magnets and key rings with Inlandsbanan motifs. Some souvenirs can also be bought from the train hosts onboard the trains. +46 (0)771-53 53 53

Mittens, game and fabulous crafts A journey along Inlandsbanan does not just involve magnificent nature and cultural attractions. There are also a surprising number of picturesque boutiques along the railway where shopping enthusiasts can get their fill. Anyone with a weakness for crafts and delicious foods should make sure their wallets are well stocked as there are some things you simply have to have. Text: Mi Edvinsson 24 Inlandsbanan

I wasn’t thinking about shopping when I booked our trip on Inlandsbanan, but I ended up buying more than I had imagined. Already in Kristinehamn I began to feel the itch to shop. The Hemjord pottery was incredibly charming and well-stocked, and my partner Bengt nearly had to drag me kicking and screaming from a place called Mazzarin. Anyone interested in crafts and scrapbooking will understand why. The first longer stop on our journey was Mora, where culture and tradition were in plentiful supply. At Kaplangårdens Konst & Hantverk one could spend hours indulging in everything from ceramics to leather bags. I love the smell in these types of shops. Naturally we also travelled to Nusnäs to look at how the Dalahästen wooden horses are made. The workshop was very busy and it was fascinating to see how steady of hand the ladies doing the hand-painting were as they decorated one wooden horse after another with rapid brush strokes. In Våmhus we watched how to make jewellery out of human hair. Yes, I know, it may sound a bit creepy, but it was really interesting. Apparently there is a long tradition of this in Dalarna.
Bengt, who likes to paint watercolours, obviously also wanted to visit the Zorn Museum. My knowledge of Anders Zorn was pretty sketchy, but now I at least know that he could paint water like nobody else. We bought a replica of the painting Summer Fun, which we will put up in our conservatory. From Mora the train travelled towards Härjedalen and Jämtland. We decided to have a coffee break at Nya Konditoriet in Sveg. Here we took a step straight back into the 1950s. Only Travolta himself was missing. Behind the counter there were fist-size chocolate balls and the chocolate biscuits were no less generous in size and could have doubled as the airships in Star Wars. On the second floor some dedicated cinema buffs had decorated the various rooms with original props from familiar films. We just had to choose between eating in a Western setting or with the great white shark lurking behind our backs. We stayed the night in Sveg. The following day we had dinner at Ski Center in Åsarna, the so-called Gold village. The local ski club has produced many great names in Swedish long-distance skiing, hence the name. Moose steak or Arctic char presented a difficult dilemma

After a ceremonious crossing of the Arctic Circle, we eventually arrived in Jokkmokk. In Jokkmokk there were of course even more beautiful things to see, most of them with a Sami influence. At Jokkmokks Tenn we were able to see the craftsmen create objects from forged tin, and were also able to learn a little about Sami traditions. When were walking round the shop, Bengt suddenly pointed to a beautiful silver necklace depicting the midnight sun. ”You must have that, as a memento of this trip”, he said. Just think what a bit of Norrland air can do. It almost felt like a romantic dinner when we stopped in Vajkijaur and ate freshly smoked arctic char on a plank. If they serve food in heaven, I’m sure this dish is on the menu. Finally we reached Gällivare, which is the terminus for Inlandsbanan. We visited the local heritage museum, which was able to offer both beautiful Sami crafts in the shop and interesting history about the Samis, settlers and mines. Bengt began to sing the Gällivare song while we were in there and became so embarrassing that I had to step outside, but when a few hours later we stood at the top of Dundret mountain and looked out over the magnificent mountain landscape, that episode was long forgotten.

The train stops for food and coffee along the railway Good food is part of a good holiday experience. There are no restaurants on Inlandsbanan’s coaches or trains. Instead, we stop on the way for meals and coffee breaks at restaurants and snack bars with which we have service agreements. You will be able to choose from menus full of local specialities onboard and your train hosts will take your orders onboard. You pay the food supplier directly. The menu will also state whether you will be served in a restaurant, or whether it is a take-away meal. You can enjoy your take-away al fresco, but you are also welcome to have your food onboard. Also, remember to buy something to drink, especially on a hot day. The timetable will tell you where and for how long we will stop.
Buy separate tickets for short trips If you only want to travel a short way along Inlandsbanan the best thing to do is to buy tickets for each section of the journey. Look at the price list on page 67 or visit www.inlandsbanan.com. If you know that you want to travel the entire line from Kristinehamn to Gällivare you would save money by buying the Inlandsbanan Card at a cost of SEK 1,795 excluding seat reservations. Ask us about the best price for your journey.
The card that gives you freedom With an Inlandsbanan Card you do not have to plan every detail of your itinerary in advance but are free to ask the advice of the train hosts and other travellers – something that is quite common. It is a clever purchase for those who want to see more. The card is also included in the package tours so you are still able to continue your journey when the package tour ends.
Return journey included or excluded? If your package includes the return journey then your return journey including accommodation is booked and arranged. This option is ideal if you want to organise everything in advance. Find out more in the relevant tour descriptions. The other option is to arrange your own journey home. For instance, you can use your Inlandsbanan Card that is part of the package to explore destinations that you did
not have time to see earlier, since you now know what there is to see along the railway. You book your own accommodation and seat reservations if required for the journey home.
All packages begin with an overnight stay Package tours on Inlandsbanan almost always start with an overnight stay in the town where the journey begins. Take the opportunity to see as much as possible of what the place has to offer and arrive early. Visit the local tourist information offices for tips on the journey. The packages also include the Inlandsbanan Card, which is valid for 14 days, so take the opportunity to stay an extra night or two on the way home and experience more along Inlandsbanan.
Gospel train is coming! Make sure to keep a lookout at the stations so you don’t miss the train! This summer you will be able to attend a gospel concert at a location near you!! For more info: www.inlandsbanan.se

Picasso sculpture “We made a detour to see the Picasso sculpture. For our group of four people Kristinehamn was an unknown chapter. The car journey from the centre to the Picasso sculpture was a real highlight. What a fantastically beautiful Vänern bay with so many lovely residential areas!” If you don’t have a car you
can go by bike, take a kayak, or go by taxi or bus along the Lake Vänern shore. You can also choose to take a trip with one of the boats that operate tours around the northern part of Lake Vänern in high season. During your boat trip you must take the opportunity to see the sculpture from the water.
Did you know that ... … Lake Vänern has 22,000 islands, rocks and islets. … the surface of the Picasso sculpture is so hard that it is said it will last for 2,000 years. “That’s plenty,” said Picasso.
Idyllic settings and exciting activities Hiking trails that wind through wilderness, mineral deposits and old mining villages enable visitors to experience a sense of the past.
Filipstad
The Brattforsheden nature reserve offers such gems as ravines with a rainforest feel and dead ice holes with turquoise water. Feel the history with a visit to Wartime airfield

Mora Dalarna
Mora lies on the north shore of Lake Siljan, on the headland where the Österdalälven river meets the lake. Today Mora is the hub in a successful region whose cornerstones are tourism, technology and commerce. As a visitor to Mora you will find something to entertain you all year round and many activities are close to the centre. Obvious destinations include the Zorn House, the Vasaloppet museum and Mora shopping centre. Tingsnäsbadet beach, close to central Mora, is a summertime gem. In winter there is a 2.5 km long, ploughed ice skating track.
Did you know that ... … the company Mora of Sweden manufactures around 3 million knives and 100,000 ice drills in Mora each year. … the Vasaloppet week attracts more than 50,000 skiers each year. … all classic Dalahästen wooden horses that you can see pretty much everywhere are made in Mora.
Discover the Zorn collections Anders Zorn was born in Mora in 1860 and married Emma Lamm in 1885. Anders had an exceptional career as an artist. His reputation internationally, as well as his wealth, was primarily derived from his career as a portrait painter. Among others, he painted three American presidents. In 1896 Zorn and his wife came back home to Mora and the Zorn House. The Zorn couple had a great influence on the development of Mora, as well as the preservation of old traditions, music and ways of dressing. These
had started to disappear at this time, so the couple made a large contribution to cultural history. In 2013, the Zorn collections, which comprise the Zorn Museum, the Zorn House, Zorn Old Farm and the Textile Museum, as well as Gopsmor Cottage, are popular tourist attractions. In the museum visitors can admire Zorn’s magnificent paintings, etchings and other collections. For instance, his collection of silver is one of the largest in the country. The Zorn House is the Zorns’ home, pre-
served the way it looked when they lived there. The Old Farm is an open air museum with a collection of old timber-frame houses established by Zorn. The Textile Museum has old as well as more recent traditional textiles, regional costumes and embroideries on display, as well as exhibitions on this theme. Gopsmor is Zorn’s open-air studio by the shore of the Österdalälven river. Find out more at www.zorn.se

Vasaloppet Summer Week
Dalahästen
The Vasaloppet week in Mora is a world famous event that attracts more than 50,000 skiers every winter. An event in the same vein which is growing in popularity at a rate of knots is Vasaloppet Summer Week, which is held at the beginning of August. Just as in winter, the focus is on events in and around the Vasaloppet arena. The CykelVasan bike race is a recreational race in classic terrain. The race focuses on distance (90 km, 45 km and 30 km events), rather than technical difficulty, and this is an MTB race that suits most cyclists. Other activities during the week are Vasastafetten, a huge running relay from Sälen to Mora, and the Nordic Walking event StavgångsVasan, which is an exercise activity and not a timed event.
The Dalahästen wooden horse was first created in the villages around Mora in the early 19th century. It was originally whittled as a toy for children, but later it was appreciated as handicraft. Some people specialised in whittling the horse and were able to make a living that way. The horse became a commodity and was sometimes used as currency. The special painting became a signature for the Mora horse. A technique was developed using two colours on the brush which results in the world renowned coloration. Today there are three companies in Mora whose production to a large extent comprises Dalahästen horses. Why not visit them at www.grannas.com, www.nohemlojd.se, www.farnashemslojd.se.

Orsa Dalarna
In Orsa you travel through four climate zones, from a gentle, undulating cultural landscape with a view by Lake Orsasjön and Lake Siljan to barren wilderness with bogs and mountains in the northern parts. There are a number of good reasons to stop over in Orsa. A meteorite strike 365 million years ago created a fantastic cultural landscape, with beautiful views, fantastic swimming facilities, and one of Europe’s most interesting zoos, unique for its large enclosures for bears, wolves and large cats. For music lovers Orsa in the summer is an Eldorado with live music every day, culminating in the crazy street musician festival Orsayran.
Did you know that … … Lake Orsasjön is part of the ”Siljan Ring” which was formed through a meteorite impact 365 million years ago. … musical all-rounder Kalle Moraeus also runs a wood products company, where he makes ”instrument cases” (transport boxes for musical instruments). … the sandy beach at Orsa Camping is around 800 metres long.
Orsa Camping – ”The Riviera of Dalarna”, location for the ”Moraeus med mera” show Only one kilometre from the railway station lies Orsa Camping, known as ”The Riviera of Dalarna”. Perhaps a slight exaggeration, but the one kilometre long sandy beach is wonderful, beautifully framed by Lake Orsasjön, blue mountains and open pine forest. There are lots of activities. The long sandy beach is shallow and lovely for swimming. You can hire pedalos, canoes,
and rowing boats. If you are looking for less shallow water to swim in, you can walk out to ”Ångbåtsudden”, one of the most beautiful places in Sweden. It is the location for the TV music show ”Moraeus med mera” and there is a beachside restaurant with a lovely view of the lake and mountains. The beach area near Orsa Camping is so large that you can choose whether to be right in the
centre of all activity or have a quiet and peaceful bit of beach all to yourself. Right next to the beach is Orsa Swimming Baths with lovely pools for both children and adults. Nearby there is minigolf and one of Sweden’s most modern bowling alleys, with twelve lanes and McGregors Sportbar. Welcome to Orsa swimming paradise! www.orsacamping.se

Orsayran – and other music festivals Orsayran is ”the world’s only organised spontaneous street festival”. The world’s largest bears and predators live in Orsa In Orsa Bear Park there are brown bears, Kamchatka bears, polar bears and Kodiak bears, but also Siberian tigers, leopards, wolves, lynx and wolverines. The Kodiak bears moved into their own bear paradise ”Kodiak Island” in summer 2012. It is the world’s largest living predator, weighing up to 1,000 kg and growing up to 3 metres long! The park’s distinguishing feature is that the animals are able to live as if in the wild in large enclosures. Interested in animals? Welcome to Orsa Bear Park!!

Ljusdal Hälsingland
Gammelgården in Fågelsjö On the outskirts of Ljusdal municipality, deep in the heart of Orsa Finnmark, lies Fågelsjö Gammelgård, ”Bortom Åa”. The unique setting makes it not just a highlight in the municipality, but also one of seven Hälsingland farmhouses to have been designated World Heritage Sites. The farmhouse can trace its roots back to Finnish settlers in the late 1600s and it also has a smithy
where shotguns were made! What is unique about ”Bortom Åa” is that husband and wife Mårten and Kristina Persson built a new house based on a postcard they had received from America. The story goes that on Christmas Eve in 1910 the couple stepped out into the freezing cold, locked the door and walked across to the newly built America house and therefore left all their fixtures and
fittings at ”Bortom Åa”. This is what you, the visitor, will find today – a farmhouse intact as it stood since the early 1800s. The America house is now used as a café offering home baked bread and buns. In Fågelsjö there are lodges to hire as well as a Bed & Breakfast for visitors looking for accommodation. It is also possible to hire canoes and bikes. www.fagelsjo.nu
Welcome to history! Discover, learn and be amazed in the west of Ljusdal municipality. The area was home to energetic, welltravelled and enterprising people who pushed the boundaries of the times they lived in. Because they dared to be different and did things their own way, unique stories have been preserved to beguile visitors. Here, in the middle of nature, we invite you to learn about our culture. And of course you will have a chance to try such delicacies as bear meat (Hamra Vild) and products made from spruce shoots (Lottaboden) if your stomach starts to rumble.
Did you know that … … there are more than 1,000 lakes in Ljusdal municipality. … Ljusdal municipality is home to three of the seven Hälsingland farmhouses which have been designated World Heritage Sites. … Ljusdal municipality straddles both Dalarna and Hälsingland provinces.

Above and below ground in Loos
Hamra National Park – Vast and unspoilt
Travelators and stairs take you back in time 250 years into the subterranean world of Loos cobalt mine. The mine became world famous when Axel Fredrik Cronstedt discovered the element nickel here in 1751. At the mine there are guided tours, an exhibition and a shop. Above ground, visitors can pay a tasty visit to Lottaboden. Here you can enjoy cordials, jam, mulled wine and other treats that Lotta has prepared from nature’s bounty or buy some to take with you. Lotta has won both gold and silver medals for several of her products at the Swedish Artisan Food Championships. www.loosgruvan.se & www.lottaboden.se
To walk amongst old pine trees, to see how the forests open up to become a vast marshland where the cranes dance in the spring, to discover wild rapids with river pearl mussels, and to stand in the middle of endless darkness below a starry sky – all this is now possible following the expansion of Hamra National Park. It was one of Sweden’s first national parks when it was founded in 1909 and today it comprises around 1,400 hectares and contains 5 different hiking trails for visitors, with viewing towers, barbecue areas and wind shelters. And while you are there you will also have the opportunity to discover that the area is home to mosquitoes and midges as well as gnats.

On 1st July 2012, Fågelsjö Gammelgård became a World Heritage Site since it forms part of the Hälsinge farms which were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites at the World Heritage Committee’s annual meeting in St. Petersburg on that date. “It was a pleasant announcement! It is an honour for the county as a whole to be declared a World Heritage Site. The World Heritage declaration means that the Hälsinge farms’ cultural heritage is to be preserved for all eternity,” said county governor Barbro Holmberg. Bortom Åa – Gammelgård. As soon you cross the threshold of the imposing farm which can

Unique World Heritage in Fågelsjö trace its roots back to the colonisation of the area by forest Finns in the 1600s, and where everything is preserved as it was several generations ago, you get a sense of what life was like for a wealthy farming family at that time. Look in at the old gun smithy, the farm-hand’s quarters and the wooden storehouse with the seven locks and you will be both amazed and surprised! If you would like a coffee there is a café in the ”America house” on the farm, where they serve home baked bread and cakes. Their cinnamon buns are famous up and down Inlandsbanan. Härjedalen Härjedalen
A holiday with added value It is almost impossible to visit Härjedalen without wanting to get out into the open on a bike, to hike or to try some tempting fishing waters! Wherever you are in Härjedalen, nature is always just by the roadside, the cottage or the village. Exploring the landscape by trying one of the many activities on offer creates memories and feelings
that you will carry with you for a long time to come, and which may help you on the path to a new, more active way of life! Whether you are a novice or have had a bit more practice, you can also opt for riding, golf, canoeing or some form of hunting. Several places offer well-marked trails and maps for both easy and more
advanced hikes and mountain bike trips. Perhaps you’ll catch sight of an animal while you’re out and about, perhaps even a muskox? After a day on the go, you’ll want to end the day with some delicious food, mostly made from local produce, and why not relax in a spa.
Härjedalen municipality is Sweden’s fifth-largest municipality in terms of size, and with just over 10,000 inhabitants we have plenty of room for visitors! Härjedalen municipality in principle equates to the historical Härjedalen province. The municipal centre Sveg is located in eastern Härjedalen together with Ytterhogdal and Lillhärdal. The Funäsfjällen mountains make up western Härjedalen, and inbetween there is Hede, Vemdalen and Lofsdalen. Each area has its own character, from magnificent mountains to wide forest landscapes and fertile cultivated land.
Did you know that ... … Härjedalen is ”Sweden’s highest province” – 4/5 is situated more than 500 metres above sea level and some 40 peaks reach more than 1,000 metres above sea level. … Härjedalen has 5 golf courses, many offering a magnificent view of the mountains along the course. … author Henning Mankell grew up in Sveg.

Europe’s oldest tapestry
Gällivare
Close to the National Park
One of Europe’s most significant cultural treasures was discovered at the beginning of the last century in Överhogdal, just north of Ytterhogdal: five tapestries, the oldest sections of which date back to the 9th century! This makes them Europe’s best preserved Viking tapestries. The original can be seen at the Jamtli County Museum in Östersund. An exhibition at Överhogdal Old Farm has been created around the replicas of the Överhogdal tapestries, showing how the oldest tapestries were rediscovered, how they were once made and how they can be interpreted. Make time for a coffee in the cafeteria, and there is also a place for swimming!
The Sonfjället National Park is located in the middle of Härjedalen, and the characteristic silhouette of Sonfjället mountain is visible from large sections of the province. Sonfjället has one of the greatest bear population densities in the country, and one of the reasons for establishing the National Park was to create a protected habitat for the bears. At the foot of the mountain is Nyvallen mountain pasture, which is an excellent starting point for excursions into the National Park. This place also provides an insight into life on a mountain pasture, with grazing mountain cows, milking and production of butter and cheese. Have a coffee before you carry on with your journey, or buy some pasture foods to take home. Overnight stays in huts is available, and even the cows come in at night since there are so many bears …

The southern home of the Storsjö Monster Svenstavik The recently opened Storsjö Monster Centre in Svenstavik is an interactive discovery centre where you can learn about the history surrounding Sweden’s best known lake monster. The multitouch station enables you to study the existence of the monster from the 1100s until present time, or perhaps you can get a sense of the phenomenon in a motion-controlled monster basin. What lurks beneath the surface? As yet there are no answers. Welcome to help solve the mystery. Svenstavik also offers service and shopping. Hoverberget (approx. 7 km*) At the mountain that rises out of Lake Storsjön you can explore Sweden’s largest cleft cave and hike along recently refurbished trails. From the

Hovermo (approx. 15 km*) Hovermo farm and industrial museum is a treasure trove for anyone technically minded, but everyone can experience a real sense of nostalgia when exploring what has been created here for four generations. This place is full of inventions for technical solutions, but also some that have been developed just for fun. Food and views in Klövsjö
A 15 minute bus trip takes you to the Jämtland mountains! Klövsjö is in a startlingly beautiful location and it is easy to see why the village has been voted the most beautiful in Sweden. The village is heaven for those who enjoy locally produced food. The Kullens Gårdsmejeri dairy produces different kinds of cheeses made from milk produced from the animals on the mountain pasture. The Klövsjö Stenugnsbageri stone oven bakery bakes sourdough bread and cakes and pralines that can be sampled at the in-house café. Klövsjö Gårdsbryggeri brewery makes various kinds of beer. Don’t forget to visit the local heritage centre Tomtan, which dates back to the 1700s. Klövsjö is part of destination Vemdalen.
Gold, swimming and nature
Åsarna is a beautiful place to visit, with a good range of places to stay and eat, a new rollerskating rink, a ski museum, and good service. The tag Golden Village has come about because of the many international successes reaped by skiers from Åsarna IK sports club since the Wold Championships in 1970 until the present day. Rätan has beautiful sandy beaches, a heated outdoor pool and hiking trails through forests and along waterways. Around Röjan and Rätan there is the Sandnäsgrottan cave, Hammarede historic forest, and Klövsjö-Vemdalen golf course in Utanbergsvallarna, all surrounded by fantastic nature.

Inlandsbanan nominated for the Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year 2012 award! Every year, Östersund in Jämtland holds a Gold Gala, a prestigious gala that honours action and enterprise in Jämtland county. Simply put, it is the business equivalent of the Oscars ceremony in the film world. Since Jämtland is a county with a strong focus on tourism, we were extremely happy just to be nominated and of course also very proud. It is also confirmation that we are doing the right things. The theme for the Gold Gala
2012 was cooperation, and the gala was opened by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. Inlandsbanan was nominated for the award of Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year, which is a big honour for us. The jury‘s arguments: “Inlandsbanan is a genuine, traditional travel destination attracting visitors from all over the world. It offers a different and unique travel experience which enables travellers to discover the magnificence of nature with deep forests and rapids, while
also being a journey through time and space. By focusing on creativity, quality and sustainability, Inlandsbanan is continuing its journey to constantly develop experiences and attract even more visitors. The introduction of the Snow Train in close cooperation with Destination Vemdalen, for instance, is a good example of how the company is breaking new ground.” How did we do? At the time of the catalogue going to print at the end of October, we did not
know the results. The Gold Gala took place in Östersund in the evening on 8 November, and if you are as curious as we were, then go to www.guldgalan.se or visit us at www.inlandsbanan.com or check out our Facebook page. One thing is for sure, we will be working at least as hard in the future in order to be able to offer good and interesting trips and a high level of service. Inlandsbanan is more than a trip – it is an experience for life. We look forward to seeing you!
Storsjö Monster Centre At 12.12 on December 12, 2012, an interactive Storsjö Monster centre will open in Svenstavik in the form of an observation centre which is always on high alert, should the Storsjö Monster turn up. Through technical installations you can study and learn about the existence of the Storsjö Monster since the 1100s until present time. Or perhaps get a sense of the phenomenon in a motion controlled monster basin.

A good tip for getting the most out of a visit is to join one of the three daily history walks. A walk with English commentary is available once a day. In the museum there are exhibitions that are open throughout the year. The most fun way of getting there is by taking the slide through the tummy of the Storsjö Monster! In a subterranean landscape adventures and experiences await among Stone Age people,
Samis, Vikings, and travelling farmers. The museum also has art exhibitions. This summer the museum will once again feature the successful historical setting with a 1970s theme, ”The modern society 1975”. Here visitors are able to meet the family with teenage children in a villa in Odensala, pay a visit to the elderly in the retirement terrraces, get to know the young couple in the green wave cottage and, not least – get reacquainted with one of Sweden’s most popular children’s TV programmes in the theme park ”Five ants are more than four elephants”.
Join an Östersund family for dinner
Make your own adventures
In Östersund food is important. Good ingredients are close to hand in the forests, waterways and mountains. As a guest you can enjoy excellent dinners at several restaurants in the city. Östersund has won the award Creative City of Gastronomy and in 2011 the city was nominated Sweden’s culinary capital of the year. The concept ”Join us for dinner” means that you as visitor can join a family in Östersund for dinner. The dinner will have been planned by the family and will always involve some kind of local association. Choose between visiting a family, a couple or a single person, who are willing to tell you about themselves and their lives in Östersund. During the meal you will have the chance to find out more about what it is like to live in Östersund. Learn about our traditions What is it we remember most about our travels? Well, the things we’ve seen, heard, smelled and tasted, of course. Up here, nature is our big larder. Up on the mountains there is grouse and reindeer, in the forests there is game such as elk and bear, in the rivers and lakes there is game fish such as salmon trout and char, but also perch, hake, grayling and whitefish. Traditions and artisan cooking are very
much alive and well here, with prize-winning cheeses and soft whey butter, well-baked flatbread, delicious delicatessen products, eggs from happy hens and ostriches, prison crisp rolls… Handicraft is an old tradition in Strömsund. This is evident from the range of crafts around, including smithies, potteries, furniture makers, artists and carpenters. There are a number of successful
small-scale artisan food businesses. For those looking to satisfy more than their palate, a trip down the Road of the Senses may be a revelation. In Hammerdal and surrounding villages, various craftspeople are holding open house for a few weeks in the summer. Farm dairies, egg producers, a smithy, a bakery and a joinery are some of the places you can visit.

Storuman Lapland
Storuman is a meeting point in Lapland. The municipality covers approx 7,500 square kilometres and extends all the way to the Norwegian border. To the west there are the mountain villages of Tärnaby and Hemavan, home of our alpine skiing stars. Storuman has a good range of shops and other services. Adventures in the mountains, forest and on the water are easily accessible from here and there are many fine hiking trails and fishing waters nearby. We look forward to welcoming you.
Did you know that ...
Enjoy Lapland
… the first settler arrived in the village of Luspen, now the central town in Storuman municipality, as early as 1741. … this is the venue for the annual Swamp Soccer Swedish Championships, see www.swampsoccer.se … Lake Storuman is Sweden’s third largest lake with a depth of 148 metres.
Take the bus from Storuman to Hemavan for a mountain hike. The 10 km long Drottningleden trail between Hemavan and Laisaliden is a good option if you’re looking for a well marked trail. All our beautiful trails are suitable for both shorter walks and longer hikes. There are trails close by and some a bit further away.

Water is life Storuman with the mountains in the background is best viewed from the ”Utsikten” viewing point, a kilometre or two from the railway station. The armwrestling champion, Heidi Andersson and Olympic gold medallist Björn Ferry were married at Utsikten. The road up to the viewing point is named after Björn as he spent a lot of time there doing uphill training. In the centre of Storuman there is a child-friendly pool with an inviting campsite. Visit the boules pitch by the lake or go bowling in the leisure centre Aktivitetshuset by the square.
In and by the railway station During the summer months, local artists and craft artisans display and sell their work in the station at Storuman. The old railway hotel – now the library – is on the way to the square and has beautiful wall and ceiling paintings that are definitely worth seeing. Shops, restaurants, a campsite, two hotels and a café are all within walking distance.

Sorsele Lapland
A wild and beautiful experience Sorsele is located in the middle of one of Europe’s largest nature reserves, Vindelfjällen. It is a municipality that offers breathtakingly beautiful nature experiences, and adventures on foot, on horseback or by boat. The unregulated Vindelälven river flows through the municipality. You can swim at the popular Skibbikudden beach, paddle a canoe, hire a boat
or why not take a trip on the Älvkungen touring boat for a historic journey along the river. In Sorsele you can stay in comfort at a hotel, boarding house or hostel, or why not try one of the camp sites in Sorsele, Blattnicksele, Kraddsele and Ammarnäs. If you are looking for something a bit mysterious and different, then Gimeguolts is an exciting destination. Some 15 kilome-
tres from Sorsele icy rivers have eroded the rock and created a 1,500 metre long and 30 metre deep fault fissure. This is a nesting place for birds of prey and for anyone with a lively imagination the primeval forest is full of exciting experiences. Sorsele has something for everyone.
At 560,000 hectares, Vindelfjällen is Sweden’s largest nature reserve. This is where you will find Sorsele, right in the middle of the magnificent scenery with the gushing Vindelälven river running through the municipality like an artery. Visitors can go hiking, fishing, swimming or riding, or just take it easy. The Kungsleden hiking trail passes through the mountain village of Ammarnäs but there are also shorter trails, suitable for oneday excursions. Inlandsbanan passes through the municipality and the station in Sorsele houses the Inlandsbanan Museum, where 100 years of railway history is on display. The same building also houses the Fishing Centre, which can advise on the best fishing places.
Did you know that ... … the waters around Sorsele offer one of the best fishing experiences to be had in Europe? The wild and unregulated Vindelälven runs through Sorsele. Apart from breathtakingly beautiful scenery, the river offers fantastic fishing with salmon trout, grayling and pike.

Potatoes at altitude in Ammarnäs
The mountain village Ammarnäs is home to Sweden’s most original potato field. Since the mid1800s they have been growing almond potatoes on the large hill in the village. Take a walk up to the top and enjoy the unbelievable views. Walk around Ammarnäs and surroundings and study the abundant fauna. Birdwatching is a popular pastime here and if you are lucky you might see several unusual bird species. In the Naturum nature centre you can see an exhibition about Vindelfjällen’s nature, culture and sights.
A trip to Sapmi
In Ammarnäs the Sami influence is evident. Visitors can admire and buy Sami handicraft made from pelts and roots. Skulpturum is an exhibition venue for art, with everything from a 10-crown coin to the Vindelälvan fairy. In a landscape with no roads, a historic journey by boat takes you the Sami mountain farm Geunja. Reindeer roam freely around Ammarnäs and the area has one the largest reindeer densities in the country. But during the summer months, between June and August, the reindeer are up on the bare mountain. Do try the delicate reindeer meat and the fish that has been processed locally.

When you step off the train in Slagnäs you’ll find lots of places to visit for all ages. You can easily get to Båtsuoj Sami Centre where you can learn about everyday life for the Samis, both in the past and in the present. Arjeplog is home to the Silver Museum, where it is easy to linger for a while. Everywhere around there is glistening Sami silver – riches and wealth in the shape of collars and belts, mugs and spoons. Magnificent silver collars crown the silver collection, which, with nearly 700 individual items, is the largest of its kind. Ancient history, everyday life for the Samis and the settlers, and an insight into flora and fauna complete your experience at the Silver Museum.
Did you know that ... … Central Arjeplog has had a railway station but never a railway. … with 8,727 lakes and waters there is 2.5 lakes and around 3 km of beaches per Arjeplog inhabitant. … according to the Central Statistical Office, Arjeplog people don’t exist as there are only 0.3 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Glittering sights Arjeplog is home to the Silver Museum, where you can see the largest collection of Sami silver in the world, as well as exhibitions and picture shows. Here you’ll find Doktorsgården, the home of Dr. Einar Wallquist. A visit to Arjeplog’s pink church from 1641 is a must when visiting the area. There are guided tours adapted for Inlandsbanan, the highlight of which is a tour to Galtispuoda, which affords views of an area
of around 130 km in all directions (departures on Fridays). The beauty of the many waterways surrounding Arjeplog will astound you. There is also a boat trip on Hornavan, the deepest lake in Sweden (departures several times a week). During the boat trip you will hear many stories about a time when the water was the only way of reaching the mountain range. Buses make it easy to visit gems up in the mountain
range, with Adolfström, Jäkkvik and Vuoggatjålme some of the place names that sound familiar. For an adventure with a difference, take a helicopter tour from Adolfström up the mountain and then hike back. During the summer several different kinds of tours depart from the little village Laisvall. The bus timetable can be found at www.ltnbd.se.

Jokkmokk Lapland
In Jokkmokk municipality, which is located right on the Arctic Circle, you can experience both the Midnight Sun and the Polar Night with Northern Lights. The municipality covers an area of 19,474 km² and is characterised by Sami and settler culture. Jokkmokk is best known for the annual Jokkmokk market, which is held on the first Thursday–Saturday in February. Jokkmokk market is a large festival with market stalls, entertainment, music, activities, exhibitions and much more, and it attracts large numbers of visitors from all over the world. Words do not do it justice – it has to be experienced! We have plenty of room for visitors and you won’t be at a loss for something to do, unless you want to. Whether you want to relax in peace and quiet or go in search of adrenalin kicks, there are plenty of things to choose from. We can provide an all-inclusive experience that you will savour for a long time. We wish you a warm welcome and look forward to meeting you!
Did you know that … … Laponia World Heritage with its national parks and nature reserves is mostly located in Jokkmokk municipality? … Jokkmokk means bend in the brook in Sami language? … in Jokkmokk several services have gained the “Nature’s Best” ecotourism quality label?
Cultural, wild and beautiful In Jokkmokk municipality nature is always nearby, widespread, magnificent, rich in contrasts and largely untouched. Fresh air and clean water are self-evident conditions of life for us who live here, while others are surprised that you can drink the water straight out of the streams, cold springs and mountain lakes. We have come to realise that this is a rare luxury that should be safeguarded. Jokkmokk is also much more than nature. We have several visitor attractions for you to visit and enjoy. Handicrafts, exhibitions, museums, a beauty factory, gardens, churches, artists’ studios, cosy boutiques and cafés, Sami craft, natural
attractions, hydropower plants, local heritage museums and much more. The range of things to see is vast and so is the range of activities during all eight seasons. The eight seasons reflect different natural and social phenomena. Some of the activity operators offer transfers from Inlandsbanan in Jokkmokk to make it easier to participate in activities. Food is something that is essential for all of us, and in Jokkmokk local delicacies are a big part of our lives. We use moose and reindeer meat, fowl, fish, berries and much more. All this and much more from nature’s large larder can be enjoyed in Jokkmokk. Restaurants and cafés are very knowledgeable
about local ingredients and do their utmost to ensure that you are able to enjoy an extraordinary taste experience. There also many different accommodation options. Hotels, cottages, camping sites and hostels are ready and prepared to welcome you. There are also opportunities for slightly different types of overnight accommodation, from a tepee to an igloo in wintertime. Although Jokkmokk is not a big city, most things you could need on your holiday are on hand, whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure or service and shopping. In short, everything for a successful stay!

Light nights and bright sunlight
The midnight sun is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. In Jokkmokk you can experience the midnight sun from the beginning of June until the beginning of July, but it is light around the clock from May to August. You choose how you want to experience it; with someone you love, with food made from local ingredients, on a mountain with a view, in a canoe on still waters or in some completely different way. A long hike in the light of the midnight sun in the forests between the river valleys where berries are plentiful, with a coffee pot and a bit of dried reindeer meat in the rucksack is something we would recommend. With nature right round the corner and a bright sky around the clock, life could hardly be better!
Discover the beautiful plains by foot
Jokkmokk is known for many things – and one of them is hiking in magnificent nature. In the area close to Jokkmokk, Vuollerim and Porjus there are many marked hiking trails for those who don’t want to walk for long distances. Some choose to visit the Laponia World Heritage, which includes four national parks Sarek, Padjelanta, Stora Sjöfallet and Muddus. Others choose to go somewhere completely different – there are no right or wrong choices! Hiking trails complete with simple overnight huts or comfortable resorts in the mountains make things easy and comfortable for you. You decide how adventurous you want to be. Many experienced guides are on hand to accompany you if you choose a guided tour, which is often combined with canoeing, fishing, or other activities. We leave the major discoveries to you. Pack your rucksack, the experience is yours.

Gällivare Lapland
Magnificent views in the light of the midnight sun Next to Gällivare lies Sweden’s highest low mountain, Dundret, from the top of which you can see as much as one-eleventh of the whole of Sweden when the weather is good, and even all the way to the mountains on
the Norwegian side of the border. During summer evenings there are buses running all the way to the top of the mountain for everyone who wants to experience the midnight sun from the best vantage point, but if
you prefer, it is also possible to hike all the way to the top. The walk can be quite steep in places, but if you just take it easy it is something most people can cope with regardless.
There are 16,000 km2 of glorious Gällivare, which is well worth exploring even if it is the 20th time you’ve been to see us. Gällivare municipality is home to the magnificent Laponia World Heritage Site, where Samis and their reindeer live in harmony with nature. The landscape comprises mountains, bogs, primeval forests, glaciers and the largest fenland area in Western Europe. Laponia incorporates four national parks and several nature reserves, and has a multitude of animals and plants that are unique to the area.
Did you know that ... … the place name comes from the Sami word Jiellevárri, which means ”crevice in the mountain”.
Mines
Something for everyone
In Gällivare there are two fully operational mines, one of which stretches deep underground in search of iron ore and one which is an open-cast copper mine. LKAB’s operations underground started on a small scale already towards the end of the 19th century, and are constantly being expanded, which has also resulted in the company now being in the middle of moving a whole community – a really unique project which it might also be interesting to learn more about during a sightseeing tour. If you join a tour of the LKAB mines you will embark on an exciting journey along a road network stretching for miles through dark passages deep below ground. The AITIK open-cast mine, which is around three kilometres long and one kilometre wide and 400 metres deep, began operations in 1968 and is today one of Europe’s largest copper mines. Here visitors can see some of the world’s largest plant and machinery in operation during the tour that takes you past trucks with a wheel diameter of 4 metres! The guided tours are popular and places can be booked via Gällivare Tourist Information Office. But visits to working mines also involve strict safety regulations and unfortunately young children are not allowed on the tours – please contact Gällivare Tourist Information Office for more information about this.
Summer in Gällivare offers a vast array of fun activities for both grown-ups and children, whether you are looking for peace and quiet or an adrenaline-filled holiday. Nature experiences are close to hand and take many shapes and forms. Everything from easy forest hikes with a sled dog for company to helicopter pick-up high above the mountaintops in the world heritage site Laponia are among the things being offered in Gällivare. For anyone interested in horses there is a chance to go on an Icelandic horse trek either in the daytime or in the light of the midnight sun, or why not go for a ride with a horse and cart if you aren’t interested in being on horseback yourself. Another way of enjoying the long summer evenings is to go fishing in any of the many easily accessible fishing waters in the municipality – the tourist information office can help those wishing to try their luck at fishing to find the correct fishing cards and maps. For all those interested in culture a sightseeing tour by car or on foot with knowledgeable guides is an excellent way of learning more about the area’s exciting history, encompassing Sami culture, the ore rush at the beginning of the last century and the current project to move the Malmberget community.
… the expression ”Gällivare Drop” is said to derive from the drop seat trousers that the navvies wore when building the railways, including Inlandsbanan.
