ond comparison Here you have a chance to discover a whole new world, beyond the ordinary and maybe far away, in an untamed land without roads. You can travel with your nearest and dearest, or on your own. During the trip you will have time to reflect, to reset your mind for a huge experience. Encounters and activities of a kind you could never have envisaged await you here. A strand of pearl-like moments, with each nugget of gold contributing to a glittering Eldorado of explorer’s delight. Close by or far away You can choose to discover places that are close by along the railway or explore areas that should really be beyond reach. Places that maybe you alone, in the entire world, will see and experience. Walk on untrodden ground. Or make your way along paths formed over centuries by herds of reindeer. From Gällivare in the north to Kristinehamn in the south,

thousands of gems are waiting to become your favourite spot, a place you did not even know existed. Package holiday or rail pass The simplest option is to book a package tour. This means your accommodation and some activities are prebooked. But if you are a person who loves the freedom to make your own plans, a rail pass might be the thing for you. This means you create your own travel route and can stay where you want, perhaps going hiking, riding, kayaking or maybe even cycling through nature before continuing on your journey at your own pace. The rail pass gives you 14 days and 1,300 km of freedom to explore. Read more about package tours and rail passes at inlandsbanan.se

PACKAGE TOURS:

Taste of Sápmi

If you dream of tremendous experiences in nature and are interested in Sami culture, this is the package tour for you. New for this year is the tasting experience Essence of Lapland.

A taste for the good life

You now have the chance to discover Jokkmokk and Sami food culture with all your senses. Food creator Eva Gunnare takes you on a taste-filled journey through nature’s larder in Norrland. Her passion for wild herbs, berries and a simpler, more primitive way of life gives you an insight into a fascinating world.

Eva’s taste performance, Essence of Lapland, is a holistic experience for body and soul. As well as tastes from nature, you are treated to stories, songs and a large helping of inspiration. The place is carefully chosen, by Jokkmokk Alpine Garden, in the middle of greenery in a beautiful location by the stream. “It is a taste-filled and personal performance that is about celebrating life. I want to share what nature has to offer and also share ideas about ways to live your life.” Award-winning artisan food Eva Gunnars arrived in Jokkmokk 30 years ago, having originally grown up in Stockholm. She has worked in tourism, with the World Heritage Laponia, and is a trained food creator specialising in Sami food culture. She has also lived in close proximity to Sami culture and used to be married to a reindeer herder. “When I moved here as a 20-year-old, I instantly felt at home. I am still thrilled to be living here; every day is a voyage of discovery.” These days, Eva puts on taste performances all over Sweden, organises courses and processes a number of products. The delicacies made by Eva includes rosebay willowherb cordial,

birch-flavoured dinkel sticks, fir tip dip, angelica cakes, and, not least, berry rolls flavoured with blueberry, lingonberry and cloudberry, the recipe that won Eva, and Jokkmokk berries, first prize in the artisan foods competition ‘Matverk 2015 Norrbotten’. It goes without saying that visitors will get to taste this and much else besides. Looking for something genuine Essence of Lapland attracts lots of different visitors, from young people looking for genuine experiences and metropolitan academics who want to learn new things, to middle-aged women and men who are interested in nature and culture. Families with children, mostly visitors from abroad, also find their way here. According to Eva, many visitors are surprised by the close proximity to flora and fauna. The fact that it is possible to pick clean, wild plants in the middle of Jokkmokk without them being cultivated. The fact that it is possible to drink water strait from the lake, and that hunting and fishing are a natural part of life here. And then there is the culture of swapping that characterises the community. “We help each other and most people don’t

have just one job, they have several; it is the original way of life. Work and leisure are intertwined. All of these are things I want to convey in an entertaining way. Because I myself have come here from elsewhere, it is easy for me to understand that other nationalities and cultures may have questions they want answered. We live in the same world, but we often think very differently about the way life should be lived.”

ON YOUR OWN

Hop on, hop off with the Inlandsbanan Card

Freedom on the tracks One single card gives you access to just over one third of Sweden, from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north. You decide where you want to stop off and how long you want to stay. So feel free to grab the moment; the Inlandsbanan Card entitles you to unlimited travel for 14 days.

Visit mines and try mineral exploration in one of the most mineral-rich areas of the world. Learn more about the hard life and work of the navvies at the Navvy Museum in Moskosel. At award-winning Jamtli History Land, history comes to life through exhibitions and recreated historical settings from 1785 up until the 1970s.

You can also make a detour and hire a car or take the bus up to the mountains to take in the magnificent views of the plains from close up. Go for a classic long hike in the Vindelfjällen mountains, a land with no roads, or just enjoy a quick and refreshing one-day hike. Catch the biggest brown trout of your life in the rich fishing waters in Sorsele or give glassblowing a go at Sweden’s most northerly glassworks in Arjeplog. The 1,300 km long Inlandsbanan railway has something for everyone. ON YOUR OWN

A place where you long to be

This is a place where the air is fresh, you can drink the water straight from the stream, and paths have been trodden for centuries. Here, Sami culture is alive and thriving and reindeer graze freely in the valleys and up on the mountains. In the World Heritage Laponia, everything from a long hike or a fireside moment to a swim in a cool, clear mountain lake becomes an enriching experience in the middle of a unique natural and cultural region. In a land without roads, where the national parks Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet meet, you will find a little adventure, a huge challenge, wilderness and beauty. STF Laponia offers different types of accommodation in the area, activities for everyone from large families to single travellers, and the opportunity for people from all over the world to live their dream. Around the corner you will find Padjelanta’s undulating fields and verdant landscape, Sarek’s high and majestic mountain tops and the vast wilderness of Stora Sjöfallet. At the end of the road, in Ritsem, there are hiking trails leading in all directions: the Gränsleden trail, the Nordkalottleden trail, and the Padjelanta trail. You will find 400 km of marked trails that connect all of STF Laponia’s mountain cabins with STF Ritsem and Saltoluokta mountain lodge. The Kungsleden trail runs through parts of the area and tempts you to visit places such as Aktse and the Rapadalen river delta in the south, and Teusadalen, with a high predator density, in the north. At Saltoluokta mountain lodge there is always a fire burning and the woodfired sauna by Langas mountain lake is always warm. A three-course meal with local flavour is served in an authentic setting. Take the Inlandsbanan railway up to this wild and beautiful region. Book a bed in a mountain cabin in a land without roads. Choose from a simple, unpretentious room or a newly renovated room with freshly pressed sheets.
