Food and coffee along the way Good food is part of the experience on your journey. The train does not have a buffet car and we will be stopping for meals and coffee breaks. The menu is on page 19. You can place your order in good time on the train, so that when you arrive at the stop, the food is ready to be collected or you can sit down at a table ready to enjoy your meal. The food is prepared on site and many restaurants offer genuine artisan foods made from locally produced ingredients. A chance for you to try some of the specialities of inland Sweden. You may also like to know that you will be paying the food supplier directly. The menu states whether the food will be served at the restaurant or whether you need to collect it. If the latter, you may choose to eat the meal al fresco, but you are also very welcome to bring the food along to eat on the train. Do buy some extra drinks, especially on hot days. The timetable tells you where we stop, and when and for how long.

Souvenirs On board the train you will find both souvenirs and books to buy as a memento of the trip or as a gift for friends and family. There are interesting books about Inlandsbanan, our nice mascots, the Bear and the Moose, and t-shirts, cloth bags and post cards. See page 24 for some examples.

The Midnight Sun you can experience north of the Arctic Circle between 5 June and 6 July. For most of the summer you can also enjoy the light summer nights, when it never gets dark. The geographical Arctic Circle, which you pass just south of Jokkmokk. The train make a brief stop here. Unique Sami culture is something you will encounter in the land of the Midnight Sun. Ancient traditions that are still alive and which you can discover in the art, food, reindeer husbandry and other everyday activities of modern Sami. Auroras are a light phenomenon seen during winter time, which you have the biggest chance of experiencing near the South or North poles. In the northern hemisphere we call this the Northern Lights, and it occurs when rays of particles from the sun reach our atmosphere. It is a spectacle that is most visible in the darkness of winter, and it looks like coloured curtains or rays in blue, green, red or purple. Wild animals are a common sight next to the railway track. We are travelling through a landscape that is home to Sweden’s four predators: the bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine. These are shy animals, but it is possible to catch a glimpse. Aside from these, you are likely to see reindeer, moose, and with a bit of luck, rare birds of prey and owls.

the little town He is one of our most popular authors and dramatists, having achieved major international success. He has sold more than 40 million books, and his books have been translated into more than 40 different languages. But that’s not all, Henning Mankell also grew up in Sveg, and the town is proud to claim the author as its own. Sveg is the main town in Härjedalen and is beautifully situated next to the Ljusnan river, which winds its way down from the mountains all the way towards the coast. When the Inlandsbanan railway reached Sveg in 1909, it reinvigorated the area thanks to the improved transport links with the rest of the country. In the early 1950s, when he was just a boy, Henning Mankell moved with his family from Stockholm to Sveg. His father worked as a circuit judge, as a result of which the family lived in the courthouse in Sveg. This is where he spent his childhood until the age of 13 and perhaps this is where the seeds were sown for his great writing. Several of Henning Mankell’s books feature settings from his home town, e.g. the streets, the buildings, the river, the bridge, the snow and the deep forests. The young reader books about Joel also feature many real places, for instance The Return of the Dancing Master.

The fascinating Inspector Henning Mankell is perhaps best known for his books about Inspector Kurt Wallander from the Ystad police force. The first book in the Wallander series, Faceless Killers, was published in 1991. The series was to run to eleven books, with the concluding book, The Hand, being published in 2013. Many of his novels have been turned into films and TV series, which have been shown both in Sweden and abroad, primarily in Europe and the USA. But the Swedes are not alone in being fascinated by the smart and slightly fierce Inspector. The critically acclaimed British version of Wallander saw actor Kenneth Branagh play the lead. The series was filmed on location in Skåne, and in 2009 it won the Bafta TV Award for best drama series. A year later, Kenneth Branagh won a Bafta for best actor in a lead role. The films have generated a lot of interest internationally, and have been sold to more than 14 countries.
QUICK FACTS HENNING MANKELL Born 3 February 1948 in Stockholm Swedish author and dramatist, grew up in Sveg. The Mankell bridge in Sveg is a combined road and railway bridge across the river Ljusnan. The first train crossed the bridge on 28 September 1908. The National Heritage Board considers the bridge to be one of the most significant structures along the Inlandsbanan railway.
Versatility and social engagement But Henning Mankell has done so much more. He has written as many as 40 novels, of which Italian Shoes, Kennedy’s Brain and The Man from Beijing have received the most acclaim abroad. He is known for his social engagement on behalf of the underdogs in society, solidarity and antiracism. Since the 1970s, Henning Mankell has spent a lot of time in Africa, for instance in Zambia and Mozambique. Several of his books are set in Africa, for instance the trilogy about Sofia, the girl who was badly hurt when she stepped on a landmine, and her fight and strong will to survive. As I write, Henning Mankell is working on a new novel and we are eagerly looking forward to the result. Perhaps the action will once again be set in Sveg in Härjedalen. Where everything began. – inspiring artists from around the world The villa lies right in the middle of the most beautiful mountain scenery, an architectural gem in southern Lapland. The venerable Ricklundgården, which lies in Saxnäs, just 50 km from the border with Norway, has been welcoming artist guests to this land without roads for generations. Today, the villa is both a museum and an international platform for artists and cultural workers. It all began when artist Folke Ricklund met his Emma in Saxnäs. Emma was a determined young woman who had taken over the running of the family’s hostelry, Saxnäsgården, which welcomed many visiting students and artists, among them Folke. Folke and Emma struck up a relationship and the couple married in 1936.

Music festivals along Inlandsbanan
Storsjöyran is more than just a music festival. It is a state of complete happiness – if you like good music, good food and lots of people. The weekend of the Storsjöyran festival is actually the culmination of a whole week of festivities in Östersund. A magical week when the city is transformed into a multicultural bustle with lots of music, of course, but also art exhibitions, dance performances, podcast recordings, a designer market and a pub crawl. A passage lined with pubs and restaurants, each with their own special menu, is erected along the quay by the pleasure boat marina.
“
the 1980s. According to him, it is a combination of good artists, loyal repeat visitors and the city itself that are the factors of success. “Ordinarily, you might visit a festival once or twice. Our festival visitors return here up to five times, maybe more. We have an incredibly dedicated audience, which combined with the music creates a very special atmosphere here in Östersund,” he said.

Over the past 30 years, some 1,500 artists have performed at Yran and more than one million people have attended the festival evenings. Every year, an average of 70 groups perform on 8 different stages around the city centre. International artists who have performed at Yran include Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon, Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Adams, Iggy Pop and Motörhead. At the festival area there is something for everyone, from an auditorium for theatrical plays to restaurant tents. And speaking of tents, Yran has its very own campsite, which is situated just next to the festival area, by the shore of Lake Storsjön. Perfect, if you don’t mind basic accommodation, a community spirit and late nights. But what is it that makes Storsjöyran so special, and why is it actually growing when other festivals are not. Lars Sillrén is the Managing Director of Storsjöyran and was one of the people helping to launch the festival in

Storsjöyran has become an indisputable part of summer in Östersund. It has gone from being a small festival with local and national bands to becoming a large, professional festival organizer which attracts the biggest Swedish artists and many international ones. “Today we are more than a meeting place for music. Lots of things are going on during the Yran week and we cooperate closely with different players in the city. Visitors are likely to find much more than they had expected,” said Lars Sillrén.
As we write this, this year’s line-up includes Veronica Maggio, Icona Pop, Laleh, Melissa Horn, Takida, Mavis Staples (USA), John de Sohn, Graveyard, Kartellen, Joshua Radin (USA), Nonono, Ebbot Lundberg, The Coup (USA), Labyrint, Imperial State Electric, Say Lou Lou, Abidaz, Little Jinder, Marlene and Ninsun Poli. The Yran week starts on 25 July and the festival runs from 31 July-2 August.

If you are really lucky you might be able to catch one of the many music events in inland Sweden on your trip. The region has a strong tradition of festivals, which are often the highlight of the summer, with lots of people travelling here just for the festivals. Storsjöyran is the largest of these festivals and attracts one of the largest crowds for a music festival in Scandinavia. Every year at the end of July, the city centre is transformed into a bustling festival featuring both Swedish and international artists.

This year, the organisers are stepping up a gear and both the Norrland Opera and music and theatre associations along the railway are co-organising the event. “We will be offering all types of music and have invited both national and local artists,” said Johan Piribauer from Arvidsjaur, who has been organising the festival for many years. Good food turns the journey into an experience for all the senses. On the journey along Inlandsbanan we will stop for meals and coffee breaks. This gives you the opportunity to try many of the delicacies and specialities of inland Sweden. This menu shows you the selection of dishes available to choose from. The train hosts take your orders, but you have plenty of time to think about what to eat and at which stop. If you have questions about the food or special requests, for instance for lactose-free, glutenfree or vegetarian o ptions, please talk to the train host. The meals are sometimes served at the restaurant and sometimes they are sold in take-away containers. You can then choose whether to enjoy your meal al fresco, or if you want to bring it along to eat on the train. You pay the food s upplier directly, please note that some suppliers don’t accept credit card.
