A voyage of discovery with a difference Travelling with Inlandsbanan is a congenial way to travel. It is also a different and, moreover, environmentally friendly way to explore a very special part of Sweden. More than 100 years have passed since the navvies by the sweat of their brow laid the foundation for this journey. You, however, need only to sit back and relax while gathering images for the memory box of your soul. Deep forests and sparkling rapids. Vast bogs and majestic mountains. And reindeer! Right by the track! The train had better sound the horn loudly. Since time immemorial the Sami people have lived with their reindeer in these areas. As a traveller on Inlandsbanan you’ll have a lot of opportunities to boost your knowledge of the Sami cultural heritage. The places where the train stops offer many experiences for travellers large and small – exciting history, nature experiences, activities requiring just the right amount of effort, and perhaps a freshly caught Arctic char on your plate. Trains bring people closer together. In which way, is up to you. Who knows? Offering round a packet of biscuits may lead to a really nice conversation. Welcome aboard! 2 Inlandsbanan

Experience authenticity – travel on your own or book a package tour Inlandsbanan runs between Kristinehamn in the south and Gällivare in the north. The 1,300-kilometre journey is packed with opportunities to explore the Swedish interior. There is plenty of time to enjoy all that the journey has to offer and you can create your own itinerary based entirely on your individual interests and preferences. You spend the day travelling and get off to eat and sleep. The train stops for food and coffee and to take in places of interest along the route. Inlandsbanan package tours are a simple and comfortable way to enjoy the complete experience. Both travel and hotel accommodation are booked and organised when you pay for the package. You can find all our package tours later in the brochure. If you would rather explore Inlandsbanan independently then try the Inlandsbanan Card, our own Interrail pass. It is valid for 14 days and you plan your own route, decide where you will stop and for how long. You might prefer to travel on one or more short sections of the railway in which case you can buy a ticket for each individual journey. We are happy to help you find the option that suits you best.

All packages start with an overnight stay! The train host – your friend onboard the train All InlandsbanAN trains and coaches have knowledgeable, helpful train hosts. They will help you with tickets and will take care of orders for meals and snacks. They will tell you about the places and scenery through which you are travelling. They are there for you and if possible will help you resolve practical issues. The hosts remain onboard the train/coach and do not accompany you on excursions or to your accommodation.

The following day you start your journey with Inlandsbanan. Package tours on Inlandsbanan always start with an overnight stay in the town where the journey begins. Take the opportunity to see as much as possible of what the place has to offer and arrive early. Visit the local tourist information offices for tips on the journey. The packages also include the Inlandsbanan Card, which is valid for 14 days, so take the opportunity to stay an extra night or two on the way home and experience more along Inlandsbanan.

Unlimited travel for 14 days on Inlandsbanan – and on the mountain buses! Using the Inlandsbanan Card – our very own Interrail pass – you can create your own 14-day itinerary for a very reasonable price. The card, priced SEK 1,595 for the period 6 June to 28 August, can be booked in advance. Seat reservations are not included with the Inlandsbanan Card. If you want to ensure a seat on the train you can book in advance at a cost of SEK 50 per journey section. Two children under 16 travel free when accompanied by an adult, and seats can also be booked for children. Youths aged 16–19 and students enjoy a 25% discount while senior citizens are entitled to 10% off. If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card/adult. New for this year is that the card is also valid on the “mountain buses”, see www.grandnordic.se or contact the booking office for more information. 4 Inlandsbanan

Good food is part of a good holiday experience. There are no restaurants on Inlandsbanan’s coaches or trains. Instead, we stop on the way for meals and coffee breaks at restaurants and snack bars with which we have service agreements. You will be able to choose from menus full of local specialities and your train hosts will take your orders onboard. When you arrive at the meal stop, you collect your food and pay. The menu will also state whether you will be served in a restaurant, or whether it is a take-away meal. You can enjoy your take-away al fresco, but you are also welcome to have your food onboard. Also, remember to buy something to drink, especially on a hot day. The timetable will tell you where and for how long we will stop.

Inlandsbanan 5

Package 1 – Discover Inlandsbanan

A different side of Sweden The south has genial small towns with verdant greenery, cosy restaurants and lakes with water warm enough to swim in. In the north there is endless wilderness with salmon trout in the rivers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Sweden is long and thin – and fantastic! On the way to the vast expanses of Lapland you can take in Värmland’s industrial heritage, admire Anders Zorn’s paintings, have a peep in a bear’s den, enjoy an ice cream by the shore of Lake Storsjön or take a stroll around Jamtli. In Gällivare the trip takes you to the top of Dundret mountain – a real high point! The view from the mountain is hard to forget. DAY 1 KRISTINEHAMN You make your own travel arrangements to Kristinehamn, where your package tour begins with an overnight stay. We can help you arrange connecting journeys by train – just let us know when you make your booking. Once you are in Kristinehamn there are several sights and excursions that are definitely not to be missed. Perhaps a trip around the beautiful archipelago on the replica 17th century sailing ship Bojorten or shopping in the town’s delightful boutiques.

DAY 2 KRISTINEHAMN–MORA After breakfast at your hotel you begin your journey north by coach to new adventures.

6 Inlandsbanan

The first stage takes you through a historical landscape marked by the mining industry that flourished in the 18th century. The rolling forests are dotted with small lakes, reinforcing the magical quality of Värmland. The road follows the Inlandsbanan route. Take a look at Vansbro railway station, which has won awards as one of the most beautiful heritage buildings.

DAY 3 MORA–ÖSTERSUND Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you make time for a visit to Zorngården (entry included) or the Vasa Race museum or a walk along beautiful Sil-

Package 2 – Inlandsbanan & Hurtigruten

Forest and sea

The journey that begins in Dalarna, at the heart of Sweden, then takes you up through the Orsa Finnmark region towards mountain tops, primeval forests and glaciers, a wild landscape where reindeer are a common sight. The train journey then carries on further north, past the Arctic Circle, past the most northerly city in Sweden, and all the way out to the Norwegian coast, transforming your window-gazing into a live nature documentary. Once onboard the venerable Hurtigruten, you will be able to breathe in the pleasant sea air all the way down to Trondheim. The bright blue fjords shimmer between high mountains, the gulls cry in the sky above the small fishing villages and the Trollfjord really lives up to its name.

Travelling with the Inlandsbanan Card

Discover more!

The Inlandsbanan Card allows you 14 days unlimited travel on Inlandsbanan from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north for only SEK 1,595 (price per adult, for discounts see p20). If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card/adult. New for this year is that the card is also valid on the “mountain buses”, see www.grandnordic.se or contact the booking office for more information. You decide where you stay and for how long.

14 Inlandsbanan

www.grandnordic.se

Open for everyone The Inlandsbanan Card is your ticket to a wealth of different experiences. Visit Kristinehamn and the Lake Vänern archipelago, which has a Picasso sculpture as a navigation point. Go canoeing on the Bergslagen canal, following the route taken by iron in the days before the railway was built. Visit mines and search for minerals in one of the world’s most mineral-rich areas. Learn more about the hard lives of the navvies on the railway and have a go at pushing an inspection trolley yourself. If you are musical and perhaps even play an instrument you should visit the Orsa-yran festival that takes place on Wednesdays in July. Musicians meet here from far and wide to make music together in the streets and town square.

Appreciate the beauty of nature

At Jamtli, the county museum for Jämtland, time stands still. Visit 18th century Sweden and experience everyday life in that era. Or why not hire a car or take a bus up the mountain to see and absorb the magnificence of the mountains at close quarters. Visit Lapland and the Tärnafjällen mountains, where Swedish downhill skiing stars such as Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson grew up and took their first steps on the slopes.

Or you could enjoy the beauty of the landscape hiking along the Kungsleden and stay in the mountain cabins along the way. For a timetable for the mountain buses, please see www.grandnordic.se or contact the booking office.

Meet a moose

If you want to get really close to some of the many different varieties of animals in Sweden then there are several stops along the railway that can help you. You could visit Europe’s largest bear park Orsa Grönklitt, go to Frösö Zoo in Östersund, meet a moose at Moose Garden or visit the Båtsuoj Sami Centre to experience Sami culture and to meet reindeer at close quarters. There are lots of interesting and unusual places to visit along Inlandsbanan. There are activities for all the family, different types of cultural events, golf, riding, fishing, hiking either along trails or independently in national parks and in the mountains.

In Sweden we have something called Allemansrätten – the right of public access. This means that everyone has the right to visit the countryside. This is an amazing freedom which means that everyone can get close to Sweden’s superb nature and culture and can experience it for themselves. However, this freedom brings with it responsibilities – so please be careful not to damage or disturb the animals and nature you visit and show respect to landowners and other people in the countryside. You can read more about the right of public access at www.allemansratten.se.

We recommend that you pay the SEK 50 per person per day seat reservation fee to ensure that you have a seat on the train of your choice.

Everything you need to know about Inlandsbanan With over 30 years’ experience of travelling along the Inlandsbanan route by both road and rail, Christina Falkengård can tell you everything you need to know to get the most from your journey – what to see and do, what to eat and where to stay. The 304-page book with maps, colour pictures, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers, now in its 9th revised edition, follows the road/rail route stop by stop from south to north and includes maps and colour photographs. The book also includes information about the exciting history of Inlandsbanan and a chance to get to know Gustaf Forsgren, a navvy who helped build the railway. To date, Inlandsboken is only available in Swedish. If you would like to contact the author or would like to order a copy of the book from abroad, please contact Christina Falkengård via e-mail: falkengard@gmail.com. The book is also available to purchase from the train host aboard the train during the season. Price €30

Sparkling white plains, days that are hopefully getting longer, blue twilight, and snow swirling around the train. Take a trip through Winter Sweden! On the journey you get to experience Sami culture, make an exciting visit to an iron ore mine, and enjoy a meal of Norrland specialities in a room built from ice and snow. Those who still hanker for a little more can finish the journey by taking a two-day boat trip with Hurtigruten along the Norwegian coast.

We knew that our trips to Jokkmokk Market were in great demand. But we never dreamt that demand would be this great. If you want to be certain of being able to experience the legendary market next winter, then please make sure you book in good time!

Inlandsbanan takes you through the winter landscape to Jokkmokk, where you get to experience the legendary market both in a historical and a modern guise. As far back as 400 years ago, people were travelling to Jokkmokk for entertainment, commerce and religious ceremonies. Today the market is a throng of people and goods, colours and smells, art, music and Sami culture. As an alternative to one of the market days, you can choose to visit ICEHOTEL or do some winter sports. www.grandnordic.se

Inlandsbanan in winter white Package 7 – Inlandsbanan in winter white DAY 1 ÖSTERSUND You make your own travel arrangements to Östersund, where your package tour begins with an overnight stay. If you get here early you will have time to experience the Winter City Östersund.

DAY 2 ÖSTERSUND–VILHELMINA After breakfast you begin your train journey on Inlandsbanan. After travelling through the Jämtland countryside we stop in Hoting for lunch and for a visit to Ivars motor museum, where the royal Mercedes enjoys pride of place. The journey ends in Vilhelmina with a guided walk and a visit to the lovely local museum and church town area.

DAY 3 VILHELMINA–JOKKMOKK We continue our journey north with Inlandsbanan. In Sorsele we visit a museum where we learn more about Inlandsbanan’s 100year history. The journey continues toward Arvidsjaur, where we stop for lunch. There is time for a look around the town for those who are interested. A bit further north we finally cross the Arctic Circle. The day ends in Jokkmokk, which is known for its Sami cultural heritage.

at the Nymånen dog kennel in Auktsjaur, where we get to meet the sled dogs and learn more about life in a kennel. There is an opportunity to stay on and go for a dog sled ride. On arrival in Arvidsjaur you can choose between going on a guided snowmobile ride or taking the opportunity to enjoy a spa treatment at the hotel.

DAY 7 ARVIDSJAUR–ÖSTERSUND This is our last day travelling together on Inlandsbanan through a winter landscape. Apart from stopping for coffee and lunch, we take the opportunity to spot new views through the train window and chat about what we have experienced together. Once we arrive in Östersund it is time to say farewell to our new friends.

DAY 4 JOKKMOKK–GÄLLIVARE We start the day with a cultural walk on the way to the Sami and mountain museum Ájtte, where we are taken on a guided tour. Why not try the lunch in the restaurant, which serves Sami specialities. The journey continues through the World Heritage Site Laponia, with its miles of bogs, national parks and magnificent mountain landscapes. On arrival in Gällivare we take a coach tour to the LKAB iron ore mine, travelling as far as 1,000 metres below ground. Incidentally, the mine is one of only a few working mines in Europe to allow visitors.

DAY 5 GÄLLIVARE–ICEHOTEL Today we travel to Jukkasjärvi to visit the spectacular and renowned ICEHOTEL, among other things. We will be taken on a guided tour of the hotel and church, and of course the ABSOLUTE ICEBAR, all of which are built of ice and snow! This is followed by a lunch buffet with delicious, local food. We visit Jukkasjärvi church, which dates from the 1680s and is decorated in the Sami style. There is also time for some shopping. In the afternoon we travel to Kiruna. Travellers who are returning home with Inlandsbanan return to Gällivare by coach, while travellers who are continuing the journey towards Hurtigruten check into a hotel in Kiruna.

TRAVELLERS ON INLANDSBANAN DAY 6 GÄLLIVARE–ARVIDSJAUR We turn around and begin the journey southwards by train. The landscape looks different seen “from the other direction”. In Kåbdalis, where the teams of navvies from the north and the south finally completed the railway, we stop to look at the memorial stone. We have lunch at the navvy museum in Moskosel, where we are also given a guided tour. After a short journey we stop

TRAVELLERS ON HURTIGRUTEN DAY 6 KIRUNA–HARSTAD/NORWAY You make your own way by train to Narvik, voted the most beautiful train journey in Sweden, going past Abisko and the beautiful Lapporten mountain pass, national parks and Sweden’s border with Norway. On arrival in Narvik a coach will be waiting to take you to your destination for the night – Harstad, the gateway to Lofoten.

DAY 7 HURTIGRUTEN After breakfast it is time to check in on the Hurtigruten vessel and embark on one of the most beautiful journeys on earth. You will see the Norwegian coastal landscape with Vesterålen and Lofoten’s variations, one of the most beautiful sections of the trip. Small, picturesque fishing villages are surrounded by steep mountains that plunge down into the fjords.

DAY 8 HURTIGRUTEN The Norwegian coast is now showing its wintry side, with the otherwise fertile landscape along the slopes, the narrow fjords and the mountains all covered in snow. In the morning you cross the Arctic Circle and see the impressive mountains Syv Söstre and Torghatten. When you dock you can get off the boat for a spot of exploration.

DAY 9 TRONDHEIM–ÖSTERSUND Early in the morning Hurtigruten arrives in Trondheim, and we recommend that you take the opportunity to explore the town before the train journey to Östersund. The tour ends after the arrival in Östersund. We can of course help you book extra nights or connecting train journeys, just let us know when you make your booking.

Inlandsbanan 17

Good to know before you travel

Visiting the mountains with Inlandsbanan This year you can once again use the Inlandsbanan card to travel on most of the mountain buses at no additional cost. This means that you can easily extend your trip with Inlands-

banan to include a hike somewhere in the mountain landscape. Please see www.grandnordic.se or contact the booking office for information on bus routes and timetables.

Buy separate tickets for short trips Remember … If you only want to travel a short way along Inlandsbanan the best thing to do is to buy tickets for each section of the journey. Look at the price list on page 20 or visit www.grandnordic.se. If you know that you want to travel the entire line from Kristinehamn to Gällivare you would save money by buying the Inlandsbanan Card at a cost of SEK 1,595 excluding seat reservations. Ask us about the best price for your journey.

The card that gives you freedom With an Inlandsbanan Card you do not have to plan every detail of your itinerary in advance but are free to ask the advice of the train hosts and other travellers – something that is quite common. It is a clever purchase for those who want to see more. The card is also included in the package tours so you are still able to continue your journey when the package tour ends.

… that during certain periods it is advisable to book accommodation in advance, particularly for the Midsummer holiday and during July, which is a popular month for holiday makers. Advance booking is also recommended during popular events such as the Storsjö Cup in the first week of July and the Storsjöyran festival in Östersund at the end of July. Mora is popular with visitors so it is always best to reserve accommodation there and the same is true of Gällivare. You can also ring ahead during your journey to check availability and if necessary you can carry on straight to another stop.

Sights with a difference You can expect to see some slightly unusual things on your journey. From wild animals along the railway line to an abandoned bear’s den. We will stop there and the train host will take you out into the forest to tell you more about the bears and their way of life. You can even crawl into the den, if you are small enough, and brave enough …

Return journey included or excluded? If your package includes the return journey then your return journey including accommodation is booked and arranged. This option is ideal if you want to organise everything in advance. Find out more in the relevant tour descriptions. The other option is to arrange your own journey home. For instance, you can use your Inlandsbanan Card that is part of the package to explore destinations that you did not have time to see earlier, since you now know what there is to see along the railway. You book your own accommodation and seat reservations if required for the journey home.

Luggage Every passenger is responsible for his or her own luggage during the trip. We recommend that you travel as lightly as

possible. It is a good idea to choose a case with wheels or a rucksack. There is only limited space for luggage onboard the train. Pets Pets travel on the floor and in the “pets permitted” areas of the train. For prices, see p20. This year, Midsummer falls on 24–25 June. Please note that trains do not operate on Inlandsbanan on these days. The opening hours of attractions and activities mostly reflect the Swedish holiday season, which runs from the end of June to early August. Contact the relevant tourist information offices for up-to-date information. Railcars This is the classic way of travelling on Inlandsbanan. The railcars, which are also known as “motor coaches”, operate on Inlandsbanan during daytime between Mora and Gällivare (see “Inlandsbanan coach”). You cannot move between the carriages during the journey. Seat reservations Included in the fare when you book in advance. Can be booked in connection with the Inlandsbanan Card and Interrail/Eurail and is useful during the high season when the trains are crowded and you want to make sure you get a seat. Tickets These are purchased for each section of the journey, e.g. Mora–Åsarna. Seat reservations included in advance bookings. See p20 for more information. Tour leaders You are in charge of your own holiday on most of the package tours. There are tour leaders on the “Winter tours” package. Train hosts Our hosts onboard the train are responsible for ticket collection and food/coffee orders. They also provide information about the scenery, sights and activities. They are happy to answer your questions and help make your journey the experience you would want it to be. Transfer to/from accommodation Travellers are responsible for transfers between their accommodation and Inlandsbanan. Some hotels provide luggage transfer. Travel information The Mora–Östersund–Gällivare section operates during the day from 6 June to 28 August. No trains during the Midsummer holiday 24–25 June. The Kristinehamn–Mora section operates during the day from 27 June to 31 July. For further information see the timetables. Experience the land of the Midnight Sun Many people dream of seeing the Midnight Sun. When you travel with Inlandsbanan you cross the Arctic Circle shortly before reaching Jokkmokk and then you find yourself in the Land of the Midnight Sun. You are now in that part of Sweden where the rays of the Midnight Sun light up the summer night. For instance, in Gällivare the Midnight Sun can be seen from the beginning of June until mid-July. A real highlight is to go up to the summit of the mountain Dundret, from which as much as 1/11th of the entire area of Sweden can be seen, bathed in the light of the Midnight Sun. The excursions run daily between 6 June and 31 July. Enjoy the magnificent view from the Toppstugan café while munching on freshly made waffles with cloudberry jam. Nourishment for both body and soul. Welcome to the land of the Midnight Sun.

Try a different kind of railway adventure! Travelling by inspection trolley is something that everyone enjoys, irrespective of age or fitness. You are close to nature and can set your own pace. You can pedal an inspection trolley in Kristinehamn, or between Vansbro and Mora, among other places.

A strenuous building project Using a railway to connect Norrland’s interior with the central parts of Sweden was a bold idea that was floated as early as 1894. However, it took more than 10 years before the proposal was passed by the Swedish parliament. That was the start of a very hard job for the navvies and it took as much as 30 year to complete. The First World War was one of the reasons construction was delayed, but in 1937 Inlandsbanan was finally officially opened by Gustaf Adolf, the Crown Prince of Sweden. The 1,289 km long railway track was laid between Kristinehamn and Gällivare, through inhospitable terrain, across mountains and soggy swamps. After decades of toil, the last nail was driven into the track in Kåbdalis. Time permitting, the train makes a brief stop here to let us see the memorial stone and spare a thought for all the men who worked so hard on the challenging railway construction project. Many beautiful station buildings, stone bridges and water towers that provided water for the steam engines were also built along the railway. Many of these buildings remain to this day. Inlandsbanan was to be the last large railway construction project carried out by the Swedish state.

Museums along Inlandsbanan We will stop to have a look at the following museums on your journey with Inlandsbanan. At the old railway station in Sorsele you can take a journey in time through the 100-year history of Inlandsbanan. Meet navvies, smallholders, protestors and other people along the railway, all of whose lives were affected by the spirit of the new age. At the Navvy Museum in the Moskosel station building you can learn about the everyday lives of the navvies. You can also view and buy local handicrafts before continuing the journey. If you are lucky a troubadour may be performing when you visit.

In Långbans Gruvby, in the centre of Bergslagen, mining has been taking place since the 16th century. Here you can see exciting exhibitions and an old industrial setting with foundry and workers’ cottages. The rock contains 300 different kinds of minerals, making Långban one of the most remarkable places on earth in geological terms. An excursion destination with a difference is Lesjöfors museum, an industrial heritage museum that also provides an authentic vision of a bygone society. The settings make you feel as if you are stepping back into another time. There is also a café and a shop at this museum.

A trip down memory lane The rail association Arvidsjaur Järnvägsförening organises trips by genuine steam trains. You are taken back in time to the 1930s and an era of revolutionary speed and pioneering travel. The restaurant car serves up delicacies from Norrland. The train stops at Storavan bay, where the more adventurous can go for an evening swim in the lake or settle for just having a barbecue. The trip is available on Fridays and Saturdays between 15 July and 13 August. Price: SEK 200 per person, children under 16 travel free (SEK 150 for those with an Inlandsbanan Card). Departs Arvidsjaur: 17.45. Stopping at Slagnäs, Storavan beach for swimming and barbecue. Arrives Arvidsjaur: approx 22.00. For more information and group bookings ring Arvidsjaur Järnvägsförening on +46 (0)730-81 93 69. The rail association Orsa Järnvägsförening operates steam trains and Y7 railcars from the 1950s. On 21–22 May to Fågelsjö/ Sveg, on 2 August to Classic Car Week in Rättvik, on 27 August to Gammelmarknaden in Orsa from Mora. To Orsayran festival by Y7 railcar – on 6, 13, 20 and 27 July, and on 3 August, return journey from Furudal/Mora to Orsa (free for those with an Inlandsbanan Card).
