Welcome to Inlandsba – a fantastic journey through magnificent scenery If you have travelled with Inlandsbanan before, you know what a fantastic journey awaits you. If it’s your first time on the train, I will try to describe the feeling you get when you travel through the region of Norrland, where glittering lakes, babbling brooks, tall fir trees and exotic animals all contribute to the overall experience. Inlandsbanan runs for 1,300 km from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north and is a cultural treasure dating back more than a hundred years. If you’re in a hurry you can do the trip in two days, but I recommend stopping over along the railway so that you can get to know all the fantastic things that this sparsely populated region of Sweden has to offer. Here you can find stillness, silence, magical views, fresh air and the midnight sun. We offer adventurous activities, hiking and biking trails, fantastic fishing waters and rich fauna. Attend one of the many festivals that take place annually along the railway and enjoy the rich cultural life and learn about Sami history. Hop on one of the buses going up to the mountains to explore further up the mountain chain. Or just enjoy the scenery outside your train window and unwind to the rhythmic sound of the train wheels on the tracks, allowing you to recharge your batteries before returning to the daily routine. Stop over for a few days and go fishing, hiking or cycling. Go foraging for berries and mushrooms in August and visit museums, historic farmsteads and open air museums. Try our local delicacies and have a 2

chat with local residents. You will cross the Arctic Circle during your journey. On the train, Inlandsbanan’s own train hosts are on hand to guide you along the railway. If you’re lucky, the driver of your railcar might be a Riksspelman, a Swedish master folk musician. Inlandsbanan’s staff are there to help you and make sure you have an unforgettable trip. Stay in everything from four-star hotels to tents – discover your own little piece of Norrland. We like to show off our region! New for this year is the Wilderness Train, which is described in more detail on page 18. The brochure also contains information about our various packages and about the Inlandsbanan Card. You choose how you want to travel. You can also customise your own package, we are happy to help! We hope to meet you on board this summer! Eva Palmgren Acting head of Destination Inlandsbanan

Local produce along the railway Good food is an important part of the experience on your journey. The train stops for meals and coffee breaks, allowing you to discover authentic Norrland artisan foods, meet the local population and stretch your legs. The food is prepared on site and the restaurants base their dishes on locally produced ingredients. This is a chance for you to try some of the specialities of inland Sweden: e.g. salmon, moose, reindeer, freshly smoked char, souvas, flatbread, cloudberries, etc. You choose what you would like from the menu on board the train and the train host takes your order in plenty of time so that the food is ready for you when we arrive. You pay the food supplier directly. Don’t forget to state if you have a food allergy and to bring along the meal voucher you received from the train host when placing your order. In the timetable you can see where, when and for how long we stop.

You can buy coffee/tea, drinks, water, cakes, biscuits, bread, simple sandwiches and other snacks on the train. Do have a look at Inlandsbanan’s own logo products in the on-board shop. The shop also offers a selection of souvenirs that you can either buy and take away immediately, or we can arrange to have them sent to your home address.

Sensational discoveries Inland Sweden is a firework of exquisitely beautiful nature experiences, delicious food culture, historic sites and opportunities for exciting activities. Some sights and experiences are especially closely associated with Inlandsbanan.

It is a spectacle that is most visible in the darkness of winter, and the display looks like coloured curtains or rays in blue, green, red or purple.

You can see the midnight sun between 5 June and 6 July north of the Arctic Circle. The further north you are, the longer the midnight sun is visible. For most of the summer you can also enjoy the light summer nights, when it never gets dark. You cross the geographic Arctic Circle just south of Jokkmokk. The train makes a brief stop here.

Wild animals are a common sight along the railway track. We travel through landscapes that are home to our four predators: the bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine. These are shy animals but it is possible to catch a glimpse. You will probably see some reindeer, maybe even moose, and with a little bit of luck some rare birds of prey and owls. The varied landscape is particularly evident when you travel in a northerly direction over a distance of 1,300 kilometres. Inlandsbanan passes through as many as 7 vegetation zones and the landscape shifts from deciduous forest in the south to coniferous woodland and bogs in the north.

You will also come across unique Sami culture in the land of the midnight sun. Ancient traditions are being kept alive and can be seen in the art, food, reindeer husbandry and ordinary daily life of present-day Sami. The Northern Lights or auroras are light displays that you have the greatest chance of seeing during the winter near either the South or North Pole. In the northern hemisphere we call these displays the Northern Lights and they occur when rays of particles from the sun reach our atmosphere.

A-Z of travel tips

ACCESSIBILITY

LUGGAGE

The railbuses have space for wheelchairs but there may be difficulty embarking and disembarking. The onboard toilets are not suitable for disabled people. Please contact us when booking your holiday and we will try to find a good solution together. Guide dogs for visually impaired passengers travel free of charge.

You take care of your own luggage during the journey. We recommend travelling light, ideally choosing a small, wheeled bag or a backpack. There is limited space for luggage on the trains.

ACCOMMODATION There is a vast choice of accommodation along Inlandsbanan, ranging from hostels to nice hotels. See our website, www.inlandsbanan.se, for suggestions. For information and bookings, please contact the establishments directly or choose a package holiday that includes accommodation. Remember that it might be a good idea to book in advance at certain times, for instance during the Midsummer weekend and during the month of July, when many people are going on holiday. Advance booking is also recommended when larger events take place, such as the Storsjö Cup football competition in Östersund in the first week of July and the Storsjöyran music festival during the last weekend of July, also in Östersund. Mora attracts a lot of visitors, as does Gällivare, so it’s also a good idea to book accommodation in advance in these places. You are responsible for making your own way between your accommodation and Inlandsbanan. Some hotels offer to transfer your luggage.

ACTIVITIES, SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS Most destinations offer cultural activities, outdoor recreation, hiking, museums, sightseeing, restaurants, etc. You can plan and book these activities yourself or we can do it for you if you prefer. The local tourist information offices can provide additional, up-to-date information. Remember that opening hours may vary, please see the websites for the respective destinations for up-to-date information.

PETS Pets are welcome on board if they stay on the floor by seats 37–60.

RAILBUS On Inlandsbanan you travel by railbus. These run on the railway between Mora and Gällivare in the daytime. You cannot move between the coaches when the train is moving.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL/TRAVEL GUARANTEE We recommend you read the terms and conditions of travel that are included with your booking confirmation. These cover the agreement between travellers and the tour operator in respect of rights, obligations and liability. See www.inlandsbanan.se for complete terms and conditions of travel. We have lodged the required travel guarantee with Kammarkollegiet, the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.

TOUR LEADER You act as your own tour leader on most package tours and make your own way to and from your accommodation and activities using the maps provided with the package tour documentation. The train hosts are on hand to assist you onboard the train.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION

BIKES You can bring your bike along on Inlandsbanan. You should book a space for your bike in advance and the charge is SEK 100 per railway section. On the Kristinehamn–Mora stretch the bike can be brought along on the train if there is space. For this section of the railway the cost is SEK 60, payable in cash on the train.

BOOKING YOUR TRIP WITH INLANDSBANAN For bookings and information, please call +46 (0)771 53 53 53, visit our website inlandsbanan.se or send us an email on book@inlandsbanan.se

CAR PARKING Please contact the local tourist information offices for information on car parking by the railway stations along Inlandsbanan.

FOOD AND DRINK We only sell coffee and a small assortment of snacks on the train, which is why the train stops for meals and coffee breaks along the way. The train host takes your orders from a menu available on the train. You can then enjoy your food in the restaurant or café or take it away to eat on the train.

There is a daily service on the sections Mora–Östersund–Gällivare between 11 June and 19 August. Between 25 June and 19 August Inlandsbanan and Tågab collaborate on operating a train service between Kristinehamn and Mora. For more information, see the respective timetables.

TRAIN HOSTS Our train hosts on board the train handle tickets and food and coffee orders. They provide information on the scenery, attractions and activities. They are happy to answer your questions and help make your trip a memorable experience.

TRAVEL TO INLANDSBANAN All roads lead to Inlandsbanan. From Stockholm you can easily travel by train to Kristinehamn, Mora, and Östersund, and there is a night train to Gällivare. From 25 June, travellers can embark on the train to Kristinehamn in Gothenburg and they can also return by train to Gothenburg. Travellers can also travel to Inlandsbanan by car or air.
