Thanks to the tips we’ve received from helpful travellers, the Inlandsbanan 2012 brochure is even more packed with information than before. The brochure lets you look at all the good things in store in our various package tours, and tells you what you can choose and what it costs. In short, all the travel information you need in order to be able to plan your journey in good time. In order for you to be able to create a tailor-made journey to suit you, we want to give you as much and as inspiring information as possible about sights, activities and accommodation in the various municipalities along Inlandsbanan. Regardless of whether you are an adventurer travelling by yourself or someone looking for a ready-made package, we dare to promise that you will have a different and eventful trip with a live nature documentary showing outside the train window. Contents: Inlandsbanan – past, present and future Work on building Inlandsbanan began in 1907, but it would take until 1937 before the railway was finally opened in the little village of Kåbdalis. When the journey is the destination – travel on your own or book a package tour
Inlandsbanan runs between Kristinehamn in the south and Gällivare in the north. The 1,300-kilometre journey is packed with opportunities to explore the Swedish interior. There is plenty of time to enjoy all that the journey has to offer and you can create your own itinerary based entirely on your individual interests and preferences. You spend the day travelling and get off to eat and sleep. The train stops for food and coffee and to take in places of interest along the route. Inlandsbanan package tours are a simple and comfortable way to enjoy the complete experience. Both travel and hotel accommodation are booked and organised when you pay for the package. Selected activities are included but you are able to choose everything else that you would like to do on your journey. You can find all our package tours later in the brochure. If you would rather explore Inlandsbanan independently then try the Inlandsbanan Card, our own Interrail pass. It is valid for 14 days and you plan your own route, decide where you will stop and for how long. You might prefer to travel on one or more short sections of the railway in which case you can buy a ticket for each individual journey. We are happy to help you find the option that suits you best.
Unlimited travel for 14 days on Inlandsbanan – and on the mountain buses! Using the Inlandsbanan Card – our very own Interrail pass – you can create your own 14-day itinerary for a very reasonable price. The card, priced SEK 1,595 for the period 4 June to 26 August, can be booked in advance. Seat reservations are not included with the Inlandsbanan Card. If you want to ensure a seat on the train you can book in advance at a cost of SEK 50 per journey section. Two children under 16 travel free when accompanied by an adult, and seats can also be booked for children. New this year! The upper age limit for young people has been raised to 25 years from the earlier limit of 19 years. Youths aged 16–25 and students enjoy a 25% discount while senior citizens are entitled to 10% off. If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card/adult. Good food is part of a good holiday experience. There are no restaurants on Inlandsbanan’s coaches or trains. Instead, we stop on the way for meals and coffee breaks at restaurants and snack bars with which we have service agreements. You will be able to choose from menus full of local specialities onboard and your train hosts will take your orders onboard. You pay the food supplier directly. The menu will also state whether you will be served in a restaurant, or whether it is a takeaway meal. You can enjoy your take-away al fresco, but you are also welcome to have your food onboard. Also, remember to buy something to drink, especially on a hot day. The timetable will tell you where and for how long we will stop.

Package tours on Inlandsbanan almost always start with an overnight stay in the town where the journey begins. Take the opportunity to see as much as possible of what the place has to offer and arrive early. Visit the local tourist information offices for tips on the journey. The packages also include the Inlandsbanan Card, which is valid for 14 days, so take the opportunity to stay an extra night or two on the way home and experience more along Inlandsbanan.

Let your curiosity lead the way, you are your own tour leader! Let your inner explorer take over and be your own tour leader. Get the best out of most things on your journey with Inlandsbanan. The tourist information offices in the places along the way are happy to help and have expert knowledge of what there is to see and discover in the municipalities. They can offer tips that help make your trip as full of experiences and as memorable as you would like it to be. Let your adventure begin straightaway; on pages 10–31 you can read about what there is to see and discover in the various municipalities along Inlandsbanan.
The train host – your friend onboard the train All Inlandsbanan trains and coaches have knowledgeable, helpful train hosts. They will help you with tickets and will take care of orders for meals and snacks. They are there for you and if possible will help you resolve practical issues. They will tell you about the places and scenery through which you are travelling. The hosts remain onboard the train/ coach and do not accompany you on excursions or to your accommodation.

100 years Östersund–Ulriksfors, ready 1912 90 years Östersund–Sveg, ready 1922 In 1907 work began on building the railway north from Östersund towards Ulriksfors. To begin with, materials were transported by horse and cart along the railway, but once the tracks had been laid it was possible to transport materials by rail. While the work was going on, in 1910 Parliament decided to build the Porjus hydroelectric plant by Stora Lule river, which was to make it possible to supply electricity to Malmbanan between Kiruna and the national border. In order to facilitate transports to the power plant construction site, it was decided to build a work track from Gällivare to Porjus, which later was to be integrated with Inlandsbanan. In December 1912 the line between Östersund and Ulriksfors entered service. In 1913 work started on the section Brunflo– Sveg along Inlandsbanan. Despite the First World War having broken out in autumn 1914, work along the railway could continue without too much interruption. At last, in September 1922, the railway between Sveg and Brunflo could be opened after the last section from Åsarna down to Sveg had been completed. Text taken from “Inlandsbanan. Sights with a difference You can expect to see some slightly unusual things on your journey. From wild animals along the railway line to an abandoned bear’s den. We will stop there and the train host will take you out into the forest to tell you more about the bears and their way of life. You can even crawl into the den, if you are small enough, and brave enough. We will also stop to have a look at selected museums on the journey with Inlandsbanan. At the railway station in Sorsele you can take a journey in time through the 100-year history of Inlandsbanan. Meet navvies, smallholders, protestors and other people along the railway. At the Navvy Museum in the Moskosel station building you can learn about the everyday lives of the navvies. You can also view and buy local handicrafts before continuing the journey. In Långbans Gruvby, mining has been taking place since the 16th century. Here you can see exciting exhibitions and an old industrial setting with foundry and workers’ cottages. Lesjöfors is an industrial heritage museum that also provides an authentic vision of a bygone society. The settings make you feel as if you are stepping back into another time.
Souvenirs! at our shop at the station in Östersund you can buy train tickets and get more information, but you can also find brochures about many municipalities along Inlandsbanan and pick up some souvenirs. We stock a number of books about Inlandsbanan, ranging from travel guides to beautifully illustrated and historical guides. A book makes a perfect present, as well as being something you buy as a memento of the journey. The shop also sells our cute mascots – the dancing elk and bear that have long been part of the Inlandsbanan brand. You can also find environmentally friendly bags, T-shirts, postcards, magnets and key rings with Inlandsbanan motifs. Some souvenirs can also be bought from the train hosts onboard the trains.
Winter on Inlandsbanan Inlandsbanan contInues to operate a service in the winter too. There is a weekend shuttle service from Östersund via Sveg down to Mora and back. There are two different journeys to Jokkmokk Winter Market and a Winter package tour with the option to finish off with a cruise on Hurtigruten. Every winter Inlandsbanan offers a few Themed trips and we operate a service to Jokkmokk market every year. For several years we have been operating a return shuttle service between Gällivare and Jokkmokk, with departure in the morning, and a return journey in the afternoon. This service operates on Market Fridays and Saturday every year during Jokkmokk Winter Market. Together with Länstrafiken Inlandsbanan operates a weekend shuttle service between Östersund and Sveg from September until the beginning of June. New this year is that the service has been extended down to Mora! Länstrafiken fares and cards apply and tickets are bought on the train. For a timetable, see www.inlandsbanan.se

Travelling with Children INCREASING NUMBERS of families with children are beginning to appreciate the joys of travelling on Inlandsbanan. One reason is the freedom it gives families. You can stop off when you want to enjoy fun activities together. There is lots to choose from, so everyone in the family will gain something from the journey. Experiences range from renting a bike and visiting

museums, elk farms and reindeer centres, to meeting a Sami family, feeding reindeer and maybe sleeping under reindeer skins in a traditional Sami tent. Nature is also full of magnificent experiences that cost nothing, such as sleeping in tents, hiking and, in some places, fishing. You can feel free to move around during the journey and it is actually quite OK “to

have ants in your pants�. There is always something happening on the train, there are stops for food and drink and stops to look at interesting sights along the way. If you are lucky you might be able to meet the engine driver when the train is stationary. Families particularly appreciate the fact that two children under the age of 16 travel free with each fare-paying adult.

The car journey from the centre to the Picasso sculpture was a real highlight. What a fantastically beautiful Vänern bay with so many lovely residential areas!” If you don’t
have a car you can go by bike, take a kayak, or go by taxi or bus along the Lake Vänern shore. Enjoy a coffee at a lovely café Vansbro has activities for all the family, including inspection trolleys, swimming, hiking, golf, fishing and gliding. You can step off the Inlandsbanan coach and enjoy a bite at one of the restaurants or a coffee at a café. On Järnvägsgatan in central Vansbro there are heritage buildings marked with plaques, a splendid railway station and an engine shed. The Engine Shed (Lokstallet) houses Vansbro Tourist Information Office and shops, as well as Gunde Svan’s prize collection and an exhibition featuring memorabilia from his skiing career. At Herrgården in Vansbro you can see commemorative tablets for the winners of the Vansbro swimming events Vansbrosimningen and the women’s swimming competition Tjejsimmet. In the centre of town you can see Vansbro’s own ”Walk of fame”, where well-known local people such as Gunde Svan and Björn Skifs have their names engraved. At Dala-Järna Konstgård art gallery and the Holst Museum you can see many fine pieces and an exhibition of wooden birds. In the village of Sågen, 30 km south of Vansbro, is a geological and technical museum, where the village’s rich history of inventiveness is on display with various machines manufactured by the local inhabitants.

Many events If you enjoy theatre and culture, you’ve come to the right place. On 22 June you can join in the Midsummer celebrations and on 23–24 June it is time for Musik i Ladan, an opera with musicians from the Swedish Royal Court Orchestra. The summer play Ingmarsspelen is performed 14–17 June and is based on Selma Lagerlöf’s novel Jerusalem. The village play Trollbröllopet (The Troll Wedding) in Äppelbo on 10–12 August, tells the story of how the inhabitants of Äppelbo got their beautiful bridal crown. The largest airshow in Northern Europe is held at Dala-Järna airport every three years. This year it will take place on 10–12 August.
Swim Vansbro! One of the world’s largest swimming events – Vansbrosimningen – takes place on 6–8 July. There is a race suitable for everyone – practised swimmers, keep-fit enthusiasts, children, young people and competitive swimmers. During the three days of the competition, Vansbro is transformed into a throng of happy swimmers and huge numbers of swimming spectators. The event is a real festival with lots of other activities for the whole family! You’re invited, too!

Discover the Zorn collections Anders Zorn was born in Mora in 1860 and married Emma Lamm in 1885. Anders had an exceptional career as an artist. His reputation internationally, as well as his wealth, was primarily derived from his career as a portrait painter. Among others, he painted three American presidents. In 1896 Zorn and his wife came back home to Mora and the Zorn House. The Zorn couple had a great influence on the development of Mora, as well as the preser-
vation of old traditions, music and ways of dressing. These had started to disappear at this time, so the couple made a large contribution to cultural history. In 2011 the Zorn Collections, which comprise the Zorn museum, the Zorn House, the Textile Museum and Gopsmor, are popular tourist destinations. In the museum visitors can admire Zorn’s magnificent paintings, etchings and other collections. For instance, his
collection of silver is one of the largest in the country. The Zorn House is the Zorns’ home, preserved the way it looked when they lived there. The Textile Museum has old as well as more recent traditional textiles, regional costumes and embroideries on display, as well as exhibitions on this theme. Mora lies on the north shore of Lake Siljan, on the headland where the Österdalälven river meets the lake. Today Mora is the hub in a successful region whose cornerstones are tourism, technology and commerce. As a visitor to Mora you will find something to entertain you all year round and many activities are close to the centre. The Vasaloppet week in Mora is a world famous event that attracts more than 50,000 skiers every winter. An event in the same vein which is growing in popularity at a rate of knots is Vasaloppet Summer Week, which is held at the beginning of August. Just as in winter, the focus is on events in and around the Vasaloppet arena. The CykelVasan bike race is a recreational race in classic terrain. The race focuses on distance (90 km, 45 km and 30 km events), rather than technical difficulty, and this is an MTB race that suits most cyclists. Other activities during the week are Vasastafetten, a huge running relay from Sälen to Mora, and the Nordic Walking event StavgångsVasan, which is an exercise activity and not a timed event.
The Dalahästen wooden horse was first created in the villages around Mora in the early 19th century. It was originally whittled as a toy for children, but later it was appreciated as handicraft. Some people specialised in whittling the horse and were able to make a living that way. The horse became a commodity and was sometimes used as currency. The special painting became a signature for the Mora horse. A technique was developed using two colours on the brush which results in the world renowned coloration. Dalarna County In Orsa you travel through four climate zones, from a gentle, undulating cultural landscape with a view by Lake Orsasjön and Lake Siljan to barren wilderness with bogs and mountains in the northern parts. There are a number of good reasons to stop over in Orsa. A meteorite strike 365 million years ago created a fantastic cultural landscape. Otherwise Orsa is best known for music and the Bear Park. Here you will find beautiful vistas, fantastic swimming and one of Europe’s most interesting zoos, unique for its large enclosures for Siberian tigers and polar bears, among others. For music lovers Orsa in the summer is an Eldorado with live music every day, culminating in the crazy street musician festival Orsayran.

Orsa Camping – ”The Riviera of Dalarna”, location for the ”Moraeus med mera” show Only one kilometre from the railway station lies Orsa Camping, known as ”The Riviera of Dalarna”. Perhaps a slight exaggeration, but the one kilometre long sandy beach is wonderful, beautifully framed by Lake Orsasjön, blue mountains and open pine forest. There are lots of activities. The long sandy beach is shallow and lovely for swimming. You can hire pedalos, canoes,
and rowing boats. If you are looking for less shallow water to swim in, you can walk out to ”Ångbåtsudden”, one of the most beautiful places in Sweden. It is the location for the TV music show ”Moraeus med mera” and there is a beachside restaurant with a lovely view of the lake and mountains. The beach area near Orsa Camping is so large that you can choose whether to be right in the
centre of all activity or have a quiet and peaceful bit of beach all to yourself. Right next to the beach is Orsa Swimming Baths with lovely pools for both children and adults. taneous street festival”. Hundreds of musicians armed with everything from triangles to bagpipes invade the streets and cosy pavement cafes of Orsa for four Wednesdays in July and one in August. World premiere for Kodiak bears! Orsa Björnpark in Grönklitt is the first animal
park outside the USA to welcome two orphaned Kodiak bear cubs. The Kodiak bear is the world’s largest land predator, and can weigh up to 800 kg and grow up to 3 metres tall! The bear cubs have been named Taquka and Shaguyik. ”Bortom Åa” On the outskirts of Ljusdal municipality, deep in the heart of Orsa Finnmark, lies Fågelsjö Gammelgård, ”Bortom Åa”. The unique setting is not just one of the main points of interest in the municipality but in the entire county and hopefully also the world. The farmhouse is one of seven farmhouses in Hälsingland which have applied for Unesco World Heritage status because of their distinctive interior design features
and preserved interiors. What is unique about ”Bortom Åa” is that husband and wife Mårten and Kristina Persson built a new house based on a postcard they had received from America. The story goes that on Christmas Eve in 1910 the couple stepped out into the freezing cold, locked the door and walked across to the newly built America house and therefore left all their fixtures and fittings at ”Bortom Åa”. This is
what you, the visitor, will find today – a farmhouse intact as it stood in the early 1900s. The America house is now used as a café offering home baked bread and buns. Europe’s oldest tapestry
Close to the National Park
One of Europe’s most significant cultural treasures was discovered at the beginning of the last century in Överhogdal, just north of Ytterhogdal: five tapestries, the oldest sections of which date back to the 9th century! This makes them Europe’s best preserved Viking tapestries. The original can be seen at the Jamtli County Museum in Östersund. An exhibition at Överhogdal Old Farm has been created around the replicas of the Överhogdal tapestries, showing how the oldest tapestries were rediscovered, how they were once made and how they can be interpreted. Make time for a coffee in the cafeteria, and there is also a place for swimming!
The Sonfjället National Park is located in the middle of Härjedalen, and the characteristic silhouette of Sonfjället mountain is visible from large sections of the province. Sonfjället has one of the greatest bear population densities in the country, and one of the reasons for establishing the National Park was to create a protected habitat for the bears. At the foot of the mountain is Nyvallen mountain pasture, which is an excellent starting point for excursions into the National Park. This place also provides an insight into life on a mountain pasture, with grazing mountain cows, milking and production of butter and cheese. Have a coffee before you carry on with your journey, or buy some pasture foods to take home. Overnight stays in huts is available, and even the cows come in at night since there are so many bears …

Jämtland County Berg municipality offers good opportunities for activities and experiences all year round. Berg has a fantastic mixture of genuine mountain regions, forests, as well as the countryside around Lake Storsjön with its beautiful shores. The bestknown tourist destinations are the Ljungdalfjällen mountains, Gräftåvallen (Bydalsfjällen mountains) and Klövsjö-Storhogna (Destination Vemdalen). Ljungan offers good and varied fishing for fishing enthusiasts. Inlandsbanan stations include Åsarna, Svenstavik and Hackås.

The southern home of the Storsjö Monster When you stop over in Svenstavik you are in the ideal spot for a base for several different expeditions. Svenstavik also offers service and shopping. Hoverberget (approx. 7 km*) At the mountain that rises out of Lake Storsjön you can explore Sweden’s largest cleft cave (81 metres long, 25 metres high). From the top of the mountain you get a magnificent view and can see all the way to the mountains on the Norwegian border. Round off your visit with a nice cup of coffee in the Toppstugan café. Hovermo (approx. 15 km*) Hovermo farm and industrial museum is a treasure trove for anyone technically minded, but everyone can experience a real sense of nostalgia when
exploring what has been created here for four generations. This place is full of inventions for technical solutions, but also some that have been developed just for fun. Persåsen (approx. 20 km*) Nature, art and handicraft take centre stage in the manufacture of specially designed furniture, tools, utensils and ornaments made from forest gold. The Persåsen exhibitions include hundreds of square metres of Nordic handicraft, Jämtland works of art and art exhibitions. Genuine handicraft – each object is unique. Hackås In Hackås you can visit Hackås church, a very interesting medieval church with splendid decorations and wall paintings that are of great historical value. The area around Hackås church is known as Heaven, and people have been walking the Jämtland-Norway Pilgrim Route here since time immemorial. Today it is the site for a pilgrim centre, steamboat museum and café. Strömbacka Mill from 1872 is one of the best preserved mills in the country. In the summertime a restaurant is open here and it is also the venue for the annual competition ”Årets näck”, where contestants compete for the title of male water-sprite of the year.

Food and views in Klövsjö
A 15 minute bus trip takes you to the Jämtland mountains! Klövsjö is in a startlingly beautiful location and it is easy to see why the village has been voted the most beautiful in Sweden. The village is heaven for those who enjoy locally produced food. The Kullens Gårdsmejeri dairy produces different kinds of cheeses made from milk produced from the animals on the mountain pasture. The Klövsjö Stenugnsbageri stone oven bakery bakes sourdough bread and cakes and pralines that can be sampled at the in-house café. Klövsjö Gårdsbryggeri brewery makes various kinds of beer. Don’t forget to visit the local heritage centre Tomtan, which dates back to the 1700s. Klövsjö is part of destination Vemdalen.

Make your own adventures It is easy to be active here. Hire a bike from the tourist information office and make your way to Frösön, a cultural goldmine with wonderful views of the area around Lake Storsjön and home to many of our main sights, such as composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s home Sommarhagen, Frösö Church and Frösö Zoo. If you want to go for a longer bike ride you can cycle to Moose Garden in Orrviken, where you will meet real moose and even get to stroke them. Strömsund is the secondlargest town in Jämtland, 100 km north of Östersund and just five kilometres from the Ulriksfors train stop. Learn about our traditions What is it we remember most about our travels? Well, the things we’ve seen, heard, smelled and tasted, of course. Up here, nature is our big larder. Up on the mountains there is grouse and reindeer, in the forests there is game such as elk and bear, in the rivers and lakes there is game fish such as salmon trout and char, but also perch, hake, grayling and whitefish. Traditions and artisan cooking are very
much alive and well here, with prize-winning cheeses and soft whey butter, well-baked flatbread, delicious delicatessen products, eggs from happy hens and ostriches, prison crisp rolls… Handicraft is an old tradition in Strömsund. This is evident from the range of crafts around, including smithies, potteries, furniture makers, artists and carpenters. There are a number of successful
small-scale artisan food businesses. For those looking to satisfy more than their palate, a trip down the Road of the Senses may be a revelation. In Hammerdal and surrounding villages, various craftspeople are holding open house for a few weeks in the summer. Farm dairies, egg producers, a smithy, a bakery and a joinery are some of the places you can visit.

Motoring history in Hoting
Ivars Motor Museum in Hoting has some 60 cars and some 40 motorcycles, and is one of the best and largest motor museums in Europe. They have rarities such as a Mercedes Benz 300 SL with the so-called gull wing and King Gustav VI Adolf’s Daimler Princess with chassis from Vanden Plas. Apart from old luxury cars and royal vehicles, the museum also has a large selection of cars from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Explore Dorotea Go on a tour of Dorotea and visit the church where you can see two statues by Carl Milles. The church itself was designed by his brother, Evert Milles. Next to the church is a chapel with ”Communion”, a group of life-size sculptures by Björn Martinius. Right above the church lies Dorotea’s open-air museum, Kullerbacken, with its historic buildings. Other sights to see in central Dorotea are the old water mill, the Dorotea Bear in Siberian larch by Lars Kupparinen and the Dorotea Stone. Another gem not to be missed is the Polar Caravan Museum.
Excursions for body and soul
Take a walk along one of our trails or go for a bike ride. Hire a canoe at the campsite and try the Björnleden (bear) trail where you might encounter moose, beavers and other animals. This is a beautiful nature experience that is not too inaccessible. Go fishing or swimming in our lakes, or bring the children along for a visit to Doro Camp Lappland. There is something here for visitors both young and old, with swimming, a play area and minigolf. There are lots of places offering excellent food, and make time for a coffee break at Görans Konditori.

If you are interested in a close encounter with Sami culture and Sami craft, Risfjells Sameslöjd in Vilhelmina is the obvious place to visit. Here you will meet Sami/Duodji craftsman Sven-Åke and Doris Risfjell in their gallery, shop and Sami museum. Old Sami utensils and tools such as old sledges, the Wilk couple’s carpentry creations, the world’s largest Sami knife and homemade drums, knives, bracelets and bags are some of the many things you will see. If you want, Doris and Sven-Åke are at hand to act as guides and share their knowledge of Sami history and culture. After this experience you will be ready to meet more of the wilderness that awaits you.

Enjoy Lapland Take the bus from Storuman to Hemavan for a mountain hike. The 10 km long Drottningleden trail between Hemavan and Laisaliden is a good option if you’re looking for a well marked trail. All our beautiful trails are suitable for both shorter walks and longer hikes. There are trails close by and some a bit further away. Sit down for a while and enjoy
the stillness in the forest, the views over the water and the mountains. Savour the smells and the light. Take as much time as you like to really enjoy it all. Water is life Storuman with the mountains in the background is best viewed from the ”Utsikten” viewing point, a kilometre or two from the railway station. The armwrestling champion, Heidi Andersson and Olympic gold medallist Björn Ferry were married at Utsikten. The road up to the viewing point is named after Björn as he spent a lot of time there doing uphill training. In the centre of Storuman there is a child-friendly pool with an inviting campsite. Visit the boules pitch by the lake or go bowling in the leisure centre Aktivitetshuset by the square.
In and by the railway station During the summer months, local artists and craft artisans display and sell their work in the station at Storuman. The old railway hotel – now the library – is on the way to the square and has beautiful wall and ceiling paintings that are definitely worth seeing. Shops, restaurants, a campsite, two hotels and a café are all within walking distance.

A wild and beautiful experience Sorsele is located in the middle of one of Europe’s largest nature reserves, Vindelfjällen. It is a municipality that offers breathtakingly beautiful nature experiences, and adventures on foot, on horseback or by boat. The unregulated Vindelälven river flows through the municipality. You can swim at the popular Skibbikudden beach, paddle a canoe, hire a boat
or why not take a trip on the Älvkungen touring boat for a historic journey along the river. In Sorsele you can stay in comfort at a hotel, boarding house or hostel, or why not try one of the camp sites in Sorsele, Blattnicksele, Kraddsele and Ammarnäs. If you are looking for something a bit mysterious and different, then Gimeguolts is an exciting destination. Some 15 kilome-
tres from Sorsele icy rivers have eroded the rock and created a 1,500 metre long and 30 metre deep fault fissure. This is a nesting place for birds of prey and for anyone with a lively imagination the primeval forest is full of exciting experiences. Sorsele has something for everyone.
At 560,000 hectares, Vindelfjällen is Sweden’s largest nature reserve. This is where you will find Sorsele, right in the middle of the magnificent scenery with the gushing Vindelälven river running through the municipality like an artery. Visitors can go hiking, fishing, swimming or riding, or just take it easy. The Kungsleden hiking trail passes through the mountain village of Ammarnäs but there are also shorter trails, suitable for oneday excursions. Inlandsbanan passes through the municipality and the station in Sorsele houses the Inlandsbanan Museum, where 100 years of railway history is on display. The same building also houses the Fishing Centre, which can advise on the best fishing places.
Did you know that ... … the waters around Sorsele offer one of the best fishing experiences to be had in Europe? The wild and unregulated Vindelälven runs through Sorsele. Apart from breathtakingly beautiful scenery, the river offers fantastic fishing with salmon trout, char, grayling and pike.

Potatoes at altitude in Ammarnäs
The mountain village Ammarnäs is home to Sweden’s most original potato field. Since the mid1800s they have been growing almond potatoes on the large hill in the village. Take a walk up to the top and enjoy the unbelievable views. Walk around Ammarnäs and surroundings and study the abundant fauna. Birdwatching is a popular pastime here and if you are lucky you might see several unusual bird species. In the Naturum nature centre you can see an exhibition about Vindelfjällen’s nature, culture and sights.
A trip to Sapmi
In Ammarnäs the Sami influence is evident. Visitors can admire and buy Sami handicraft made from pelts and roots. Skulpturum is an exhibition venue for art, with everything from a 10-crown coin to the Vindelälvan fairy. In a landscape with no roads, a historic journey by boat takes you the Sami mountain farm Geunja. Reindeer roam freely around Ammarnäs and the area has one the largest reindeer densities in the country. But during the summer months, between June and August, the reindeer are up on the bare mountain. Do try the delicate reindeer meat and the fish that has been processed locally.

Arjeplog is home to the Silver Museum, where you can see the largest collection of Sami silver in the world, as well as exhibitions and picture shows. Here you’ll find Doktorsgården, the home of Dr. Einar Wallquist. A visit to Arjeplog’s pink church from 1641 is a must when visiting the area. There are guided tours adapted for Inlandsbanan, the highlight of which is a tour to Galtispouda, which affords views of an area
of around 130 km in all directions (departures on Fridays). The beauty of the many waterways surrounding Arjeplog will astound you. There is also a boat trip on Hornavan, the deepest lake in Sweden (departures several times a week). During the boat trip you will hear many stories about a time when the water was the only way of reaching the mountain range. Buses make it easy to visit gems up in the mountain
range, with Adolfström, Jäkkvik and Vuoggatjålme some of the place names that sound familiar. For an adventure with a difference, take a helicopter tour from Adolfström up the mountain and then hike back. Slagnäs. Visit Båtsuoj Sami Centre, which is a beautiful, peaceful site situated by a bewitching lake. Here you can meet reindeer and find out more about their care, and about shamanism, a faith based around nature followed by the people through the ages, and about many other elements of Sami culture. If you are looking for something more, you are welcome to spend the night in a traditional Sami tepee-style tent and participate in the various activities in the Sami village or in the forest. Rustic sights New! Visit Granberget and see a 19th century farm come alive with animals and a personal welcome. Arvidsjaur’s beautiful timber church from 1903 is open daily during the summer and is well worth a visit. At the local heritage museum you can learn more about the history of the district in the charming setting by the Old Vicarage. The museum sells crafts produced by a number of different local craftsmen. Nature’s own water park Grab the chance to go on an unusual adventure: go on a beaver safari with fishing and a stop ashore along a river or stream. Fish for arctic char in some of Sweden’s best fishing waters with a local guide and good food. Overnight stay in a Sami tepee is optional. Go hiking with a guide along the historic Nasaleden through the Tjärnheden dead ice area with its abundance of lakes. Or why not visit some of the many nature reserves. Centrumbadet in Arvidsjaur offers aquatic fun for all ages, both indoors and out. At Camp Gielas you can swim outdoors in a lake with a gently shelving sand beach and jetties. The steam train stops for swimming and a barbecue by the shore of Lake Storavan on Friday and Saturday evenings in peak season.

A long hike in the forests between the river valleys where berries are plentiful, with
a coffee pot and a bit of dried reindeer meat in the rucksack is something we would recommend. It is hard to describe the pleasure of hiking in the summer when the vegetation is bursting into life and the Midnight Sun is shining day and night until the end of July, or in September after the intensive and often warm summer, when autumn colours the vegetation in red and gold and the mountains are on fire. At the cafés and restaurants in Jokkmokk municipality local delicacies take centre stage. How about some smoked reindeer steak, fillet of elk or blueberry marmalade on gahkku (Sami bread)? The ingredients come directly from nature; reindeer, elk, bear, capercaillie, grouse, char, salmon trout, cloudberry, blueberry and lingonberry. The local specialities are mixed with international cuisine and there is something here for every palate! Multicultural with a rich history In Gällivare different cultures have always lived side by side, ever since the Samis were joined at the foot of the Dundret mountain by the settlers and the navvies. The differences are still thriving, both among residents and among visitors. The main attraction in the summertime is the bright Midnight Sun and a visit to one of the two mines in the municipality, but there is much more to discover, as the local population will tell you if you ask. Many appreciate being close to nature, and being able to go fishing and hiking, while others prefer to spend their time in the town. In the summer the market is flourishing, and there are various events on offer, such as the annual summer market. The easiest way to learn about the area’s culture and history is by visiting Gällivare Museum in the centre of town. The large building, known locally as Centralskolan, also houses a Mosquito Museum, the tourist information office and a café. Gällivare has something for everyone, it is up to you to decide what you want to do – contact the tourist information office for more tips on activities and for assistance with booking whatever you decide to do!

There are 16,000 km2 of glorious Gällivare, which is well worth exploring even if it is the 20th time you’ve been to see us. Gällivare municipality is home to the magnificent Laponia World Heritage Site, where Samis and their reindeer live in harmony with nature. The landscape comprises mountains, bogs, primeval forests, glaciers and the largest fenland area in Western Europe. Laponia incorporates four national parks and several nature reserves, and has a multitude of animals and plants that are unique to the area.
Did you know that ... … the place name comes from the Sami word Jiellevárri, which means ”crevice in the mountain”. … the expression ”Gällivare Drop” is said to derive from the drop seat trousers that the navvies wore when building the railways, including Inlandsbanan.
Two mines in the municipality World Heritage with a living Sami culture There are 878 World Heritage sites in the world, only 25 of which combine cultural and natural heritage and one of these, Laponia, is in Gällivare. For an area to be designated as a World Heritage Site is has to be considered to be of ”outstand-ing value to the whole of humanity” and this is something that perfectly describes Laponia. This area is also one of only four World Heritage Sites that represent a landscape of an ancient culture – the landscape of the Samis. Today nine Sami villages remain and traces from 1,000 years of activity have been discovered in the area – in the form of physical cultural remnants such as traces of dwelling places and tools – but also through unspoken traditional knowledge about routes and sacred mountains, for instance.
The mining industry has been the driving force behind social development, and once hydroelectric power was expanded more of the mountain region was discovered and became accessible to tourists. In Gällivare there are two mines, both of which are open in the summertime to visitors over the age of 12. The age limit is due to the fact that production carries on at full tilt during visits. LKAB’s operations below the surface began on a small scale already towards the end of the 19th century, and they are constantly being expanded. AITIK open pit mine started operations in 1968 and is today one of the largest copper mines in Europe. The two mines are very different from one another, but both offer visitors an experience above the ordinary!

a journey in time and space The backpack was packed, the Inlandsbanan card was in the outer pocket and I was getting excited about the trip ahead. Ahead of me lay a 1,300 km long train journey full of surprises. To think that there are so many gems between Kristinehamn and Gällivare! Text: Mi Edvinsson

A trip along Inlandsbanan is as much a historical journey as a geographical one. Since I’ve always been interested in history, I made sure I got a fill of it even before it was time for departure from Kristinehamn. In Ölme General Store and Café I was quickly transported back in time 100 years. The items for sale in the café, were, however, of a rather more recent vintage than the items in the museum. For the section between Kristinehamn and Mora we travelled by coach. This did not seem to matter to the Inlandsbanan train hosts who remained with the travellers at all times. The journey to Mora on the Inlandsbanan coach takes four hours. If you are curious enough it could take several days. In Storfors, next to the Bergslag canal, my holiday got off to an easy start with a relaxing bath and a stroll in the beautiful landscape. Then the journey continued towards Filipstad, where during a walking tour of the city I was able to see my favourite poet, Nils Ferlin, immortalised on a bench down by the river. In the area around Filipstad, mining has been going on for 600 years. In Långban mining village and museum I learnt a lot about mining in times gone by, but before that the coach took us on a detour to Högberget in Persberg, where they first drove a pickaxe into the earth already in the 14th century. On the way back, the coach stopped at Oxbrogården café, where I had time both for a cup of coffee and for some exploring among imaginative dragons. Since I’m childishly fascinated by fairytales and fantasy creatures, of course I had to pay a visit to Klinten, author and artist Karin Fryxell’s beautiful summer cottage, where I came across the trolls I remembered from my childhood, Sotlugg and Linlugg. More trolls and other supernatural beings, fortunately all of them
harmless, could be seen along the Trollstigen Troll Trail in Lesjöfors, where the coach stopped on the southbound journey. In Vansbro, calm had once more been restored following the annual Vansbrosimningen swimming competition. Instead, I had a quick look at the charming old engine shed, which also houses skiing miracle Gunde Svan’s impressive collection of prizes and the tourist information office, which has recently moved in here. After that it was not far to Mora, Zorns Gammelgård and all sorts of culture associated with Dalarna. To see the skilled folk art painters decorate the Dalahästen wooden horses was an experience that was well worth the extra coach trip to Nusnäs. The beautiful summer weather made me long for outdoor activities. Having consulted the tourist information office, I took the mountain bus from Mora to Grövelsjön, where I was able to see the mountains in summertime for the first time. It was so ravishing that I stayed for three days. Every day I walked along a different trail. At night I slept like a log in a bed at the mountain lodge. Wonderfully invigorated I returned to Inlandsbanan and Orsa, where I was met by a cacophony of bagpipe tunes and ukulele strumming. I had arrived in the middle of Orsayran, a festival for street musicians that is so stirring that I am convinced it could

entice Egyptian mummies to dance. After a night’s rest at Orsa’s beautiful campsite, I headed for Grönklitt and Björnparken, where I came face to face with both bears and wolves before continuing my journey. At Fågelsjö Gammelgård, relaxing in a white wicker chair among the geraniums in the conservatory, I looked back on my experiences over a cup of coffee and a plate of home baked cakes and biscuits. Just to be sure, I did the same at Gammelgården in Sveg. Eating cakes in a romantic farm environment is very pleasant. The train was now nearing Lake Storsjön, home to a large monster that many have caught a glimpse of but which no one has managed to capture on camera. The residents of Svenstavik have now increased their chances by setting up a film camera under the water. Looking at the screen and imagining that the Storsjö Monster could swim into the picture at any time was a fascinating experience. From the top of Hoverberget I looked out across the lake, but the surface was as smooth as a polished mirror. However, the hike up and down the mountain did provide both beautiful views and good exercise. Even after my return home I have been looking for the monster, since everything can now be followed live via the Internet. After a short visit to Himmelriket in Hackås and the pretty church
with paintings from the 12th century, the train finally arrived in Östersund. The cosy stretch of restaurants and bars down by the water had opened in anticipation of the annual Storsjöyran festival, creating a great summer feeling. The fact that Östersund is Culinary Capital was something of a focus for my stay here. As well as the restaurant fare based on local produce, I also enjoyed eating freshly caught trout in the home of an ordinary Östersund couple – all of it arranged via the tourist information office website. It was a very nice dinner and I learnt a lot about life in this part of the country. The train journey continued northbound. The route took us right into the wilderness, towards the land of the Samis and the Midnight Sun. Outside the train window, vast stretches of forest, marshes and roaring rivers rushed past. Right in the middle of this wilderness, against all the odds, the most wondrous sights kept turning up. In Hoting I visited Ivars Bilmuseum with fantastic vintage cars and motorcycles, and in Dorotea I visited the caravan museum, which brought back memories of camping holidays in the 1960s and 1970s. (For whatever reason, slalom skier Ingemar Stenmark’s classic hat is on display here.) On the train I continued reading Bernhard Nord’s well-known novel ”In the shadow of the Marsfjället mountain”, which I found in a flea market in Östersund. When the train stopped in Vilhelmina I

only had one chapter left to read. After a walk through the adorable Church Town – where, incidentally, I got to see the world’s largest Sami knife (87.5 kilos!) – I slipped into the tourist information office, where I found a poster for a tour to Marsliden, which made me very excited. Marsliden is the real-life location for the book about the life of the settlers that I had just been reading and which is based on real events. To be able to see the places and buildings in real life was extraordinary. Already in Storuman it was evident that the inhabitants of Lapland are characterized by wild nature and a severe climate. This is where they nominate the ”Wild Man of the Year” during the Storuman Days, and where they arrange the Swedish Championships in Swamp soccer – footboll on the marshes – which is not for weaklings. The best thing for me, however, was the trip up to Utsikten, where the amazing mountain scenery stretches out on the horizon. From Slagnäs I took an excursion to Båtsuoj Sami centre, where I spent half a day getting some first-hand experience of reindeer husbandry and Sami culture. The stories being told around the blazing fire in the tepee about enchanted drums and shamanism made me forget both time and space. The next stop was Arvidsjaur, which during the month of July puts on a number of festive events. I managed to fit in the Sami church holiday and also took the opportunity to join a guided tour of Lappstaden (where they go fishing in the middle of town!). In the evening I had a train experience above the ordinary – a trip on a
genuine old puffing steam train through the wild landscape. My journey on Inlandsbanan took me onward towards Jokkmokk and Gällivare. Suddenly the voice of the train host over the tannoy declared that we were approaching the Arctic Circle and would make a quick stop. Stepping off the train here was undeniably a wonderful feeling. In my mind I could see images of world maps and globes, which made me realise just how far north we really were. When we got back on board the train, we travellers were awarded a dated certificate to prove that we had been at the Arctic Circle, should anyone doubt it. In Jokkmokk I gorged on art and Sami handicraft, much more of which of course can be found at the markets held here. I brought home with me a necklace in the shape of a ptarmigan from Jokkmokks Tenn and lots of photos from the pleasant sculpture park. In Gällivare, at the top of Dundret mountain with the whole of Sweden at my feet, I had reached my northernmost destination. I had experienced a lot and more was to come on the southbound journey. I was able to quickly find good accommodation everywhere by avoiding the largest events in the various places I visited. Huge praise goes to all the tourist information offices which helped me find all these gems. Inland Sweden is fantastic!

A different side of Sweden The south has genial small towns with verdant greenery, cosy restaurants and lakes with water warm enough to swim in. In the north there is endless wilderness with salmon trout in the rivers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Sweden is long and thin – and fantastic! On the way to the vast expanses of Lapland you can take in Värmland’s industrial heritage, admire Anders Zorn’s paintings, have a peep in a bear’s den, enjoy an ice cream by the shore of Lake Storsjön or take a stroll around Jamtli. In Gällivare the trip takes you to the top of Dundret mountain – a real high point! The view from the mountain is hard to forget. DAY 3 MORA–ÖSTERSUND Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you make time for a visit to Zorngården (entry included) or the Vasa Race museum or a walk along beautiful Siljan. DAY 4 ÖSTERSUND Östersund is a true summer city with a great deal to offer. Take a walk to the heritage museum Jamtli Historieland and meet up with people and places from days gone by. Once-in-alifetime journey
The journey that begins in Dalarna, at the heart of Sweden, then takes you up through the Finnmarken region towards mountain tops, primeval forests and glaciers, a wild landscape where reindeer are a common sight. The train journey then carries on further north, past the Arctic Circle, past the most northerly city in Sweden, and all the way out to the Norwegian coast, transforming your window-gazing into a live nature documentary. Once onboard the venerable Hurtigruten, you will be able to breathe in the pleasant sea air all the way down to Trondheim. The bright blue fjords shimmer between high mountains, the gulls cry in the sky above the small fishing villages and the Trollfjord really lives up to its name.

day 2 Mora–ÖsTersund Today you climb aboard the train for the first stage of your journey on Inlandsbanan. The train will slow down as we pass the waterfalls Storstupet and Helvetesfallet, which were used for timber floating, to allow you to admire nature’s own drama. You will also be able to visit – and perhaps even crawl into – a real bear’s den by the railway. The journey ends in Östersund. Why not go for a walk along Lake Storsjön.
day 3 ÖsTersund–arvidsJaur From Östersund the journey continues north. You can catch a quick glimpse of Ångermanland before we enter Sweden’s largest province – Lapland. Here you are surrounded by vast areas of forests, mountains and rushing water. This is also reindeer country so don’t be surprised if you see reindeer, moose and bears along the tracks. The train pulls in at Arvidsjaur in the afternoon, which allows you time to visit the Sami village Lappstaden.
day 4 arvidsJaur–gÄllivare The morning is free for you to spend as you wish. In the afternoon you will be crossing the Arctic Circle and travelling through part of the national park and World Heritage Site Laponia, which has mountains, lakes, delta landscapes, ancient forests and glaciers. You are looking at a landscape imbued with Sami heritage, inhabited since the Ice Age and home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including many endangered species. After a late arrival in Gällivare, you will go by coach for an evening trip to the summit of Dundret to admire the astounding beauty of the landscape bathed in the light of the summer night. Enjoy the unique surroundings (until 5 Aug).
day 5 gÄllivare–narvik–harsTad The journey now continues by train or coach. You travel past the ore fields of Kiruna,
the northernmost city in Sweden, and on towards Abisko national park with the Kebnekaise mountain as backdrop. You will soon be crossing the border with Norway before arriving in the coastal town of Narvik after a beautiful scenic journey. From Narvik the journey continues by bus to the harbour town of Harstad, the entry point to Lofoten.

day 6 hurTigruTen In the morning we board Hurtigruten. The service has been in operation along the Norwegian coast for 100 years, linking the north of the country with the south. Hurtigruten enters Trollfjorden to turn around, which gives you the opportunity to marvel at the spectacular scenery. In the evening the vessel docks at Svolvær, the regional centre of Lofoten. Take the opportunity to go on shore and explore on your own.
day 7 hurTigruTen Today you will cruise along the Helgeland coastline with more than 1,000 islands and numerous fishing hamlets. In the morning you will cross the Arctic Circle on the way south and also see the “Seven Sisters” – seven beautiful mountain tops that are 1,000 metres tall.
day 8 TrondheiM–ÖsTersund When you wake up you will be in Trondheim, where you can visit the beautiful Nidaros cathedral and the fishing harbour Ravnkloa with its local delicacies. Mittnabotåget leaves in the afternoon and reaches Östersund in the evening. You could also take the morning train from Trondheim to Östersund to explore the city properly. Visit Jamtli Historieland, for instance.
day 9 ÖsTersund–Mora It is now time to either head back south along Inlandsbanan to Mora, or you could finish the trip in Östersund. Your Inlandsbanan Card will still be valid for a few days, so whatever you choose to do, there will be lots to see and do on and around Inlandsbanan.

day 3 ÖsTersund Look forward to a whole day of new experiences in Östersund. Stroll up to Jamtli Historieland to meet people and see places from many different periods (entry included in package). If you want to find out about Sami culture at this stage of the journey, pay a visit to Gaaltije Cultural Centre and perhaps the handicraft shop Gaupa.
day 4 ÖsTersund–arJeplog When you are back on the train, the journey continues north past Ströms Vattudal. Look out over the extensive forests and lakes teeming with fish. Inlandsbanan now enters Sweden’s largest province, Lapland. In Slagnäs the journey continues by coach to the Båtsuoj Sami Centre where you can experience authentic Sami life with all your senses. Enjoy a Sami meal served in a traditional Sami hut whilst listening to a storyteller. Suggestion! Stay for the night and sleep on reindeer pelts in a Sami hut (shared accommodation). Next day you will find many activities to enjoy, and in the afternoon a coach will take you back to

day 5 arJeplog–JokkMokk The day begins with a walk around Arjeplog, a town with a rich Sami heritage. After a coach trip up Galtispuoda mountain and lunch, a visit to the Silver museum awaits. Return to Inlandsbanan is by public bus. Shortly before reaching Jokkmokk you will cross the Arctic Circle – the border of the Land of the Midnight Sun.
day 6 JokkMokk–gÄllivare In Jokkmokk you have nearly a full day to visit attractions such as the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum Ájtte (entry included) and Jokkmokk’s Mountain Garden, where you can study the mountain flora. The journey continues in the evening through the national park area and the World Heritage Site Laponia. On arrival in Gällivare we take a coach to the summit of Dundret to admire the breathtaking views in the light of the Midnight Sun (until 5/8).
day 7 gÄllivare For those who have opted to finish the journey in Gällivare, the tour ends after breakfast. You are welcome to stay on and see more of the area’s rich heritage and beautiful nature. You could visit Europe’s largest copper mine Aitik, for instance, or go for a hike on Dundret mountain.
day 8 gÄllivare–ÖsTersund After an early breakfast, the journey turns back south towards Östersund. The scenery actually looks different seen in “reverse order”.

If you want to get really close to some of the many different varieties of animals in Sweden then there are several stops along the railway that can help you. You could visit Europe’s largest bear park Orsa Grönklitt, go to Frösö Zoo in Östersund, meet a moose at Moose Garden or visit the Båtsuoj Sami Centre to experience Sami culture and to meet reindeer
at close quarters. There are lots of interesting and unusual places to visit along Inlandsbanan. There are activities for all the family, different types of cultural events, golf, riding, fishing, hiking either along trails or independently in national parks and in the mountains. Jokkmokk Winter Market New this year! Following many requests, we will this year run two different trips to Jokkmokk Winter Market. The first is the classic one-week package and the other one, which is new for this year, is a weekend package. The one-week package starts on Monday, 30 January, with an overnight stay at a hotel in Östersund. The following day is the start of the journey on the Inlandsbanan train up to Kåbdalis, where we will stay a few days at the mountain resort. From Kåbdalis we will visit the Winter Market, and there is also an optional trip to ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi. At least one whole day will be spent at the market, with an opportunity to see the inauguration and to visit the historic market. We will also have time to visit Jokkmokks Tenn, go for a cultural walk and have a guided tour of the Ájtte Mountain and Sami Museum. Having finished our visit to the market, on Friday we will head south on Inlandsbanan to Arvidsjaur, where a comfortable overnight stay in a hotel awaits. Winter White Winter White is a package tour influenced by the summer package Discover Inlandsbanan and the popular package combination that includes Hurtigruten. This year we are running Winter White during the second week in February, straight after the Jokkmokk Winter Market when Inlandsbanan has been cleared of snow. The package starts on 6 February with an overnight stay in Östersund. The following day the trip on the northbound Inlandsbanan train begins. On our way north we will stay overnight in Vilhelmina, Jokkmokk and Gällivare, with activities arranged in these towns. We will also visit ICEHOTEL and Kiruna for a whole day. After the visit to ICEHOTEL you can choose between heading south on Inlandsbanan or travelling north
for a cruise on Hurtigruten. If you decide to travel south with Inlandsbanan we will stay one more night in Gällivare before continuing towards Arvidsjaur, where the whole afternoon is free for activities of your choice. What about trying a dog sled ride or a snowmobile ride? The choice is up to you! The trip ends with an overnight stay at a hotel in Östersund. If you only want to travel a short way along Inlandsbanan the best thing to do is to buy tickets for each section of the journey. Look at the price list on page 67 or visit www.inlandsbanan.se.If you know that you want to travel the entire line from Kristinehamn to Gällivare you would save money by buying the Inlandsbanan Card at a cost of SEK 1,595 excluding seat reservations. Ask us about the best price for your journey.

Public holidays and seasonal oPening In Sweden Midsummer is a public holiday which means that shops and public offices may be closed for all or part of the day. This year, Midsummer falls on 22–23 June. Please note that trains do not operate on Inlandsbanan on these days. The opening hours of attractions and activities mostly reflect the Swedish holiday season, which runs from the end of June to early August. Contact the relevant tourist information offices for up-to-date information. railcars This is the classic way of travelling on Inlandsbanan. The railcars, which are also known as “motor coaches”, operate on Inlandsbanan during daytime between Mora and Gällivare (see “Inlandsbanan coach”). You cannot move between the carriages during the journey. seat reservations Included in the fare when you book in advance. Can be booked in connection with the Inlandsbanan Card and Interrail/Eurail and is useful during the high season when the trains are crowded and you want to make sure you get a seat.
tour leaders You are in charge of your own holiday on most of the package tours. There are tour leaders on the “Winter tours” package. train hosts Our hosts onboard the train are responsible for ticket collection and food/coffee orders. They also provide information about the scenery, sights and activities. They are happy to answer your questions and help make your journey the experience you would want it to be. transfer to/from accommodation Travellers are responsible for transfers between their accommodation and Inlandsbanan. Some hotels provide luggage transfer. travel information The Mora–Östersund–Gällivare section operates during the day from 4 June to 26 August. No trains during the Midsummer holiday 22–23 June. The Kristinehamn–Mora section operates during the day from 25 June to 29 July. Inlandsbanan 65
Prices We reCommend that you book and buy your ticket in advance. It is possible to buy the Inlandsbanan Card and tickets, excluding seat reservations, on the train for cash from our hosts. Advance booking via Inlandsbanan on tel: +46 (0)771-53 53 53, email: info@inlandsbanan.se or www.inlandsbanan.se. Partially used tickets cannot be refunded (this applies to all tickets). There is a fee for changing a confirmed booking. Tickets are purchased per section of the journey. included when fares are booked in advance. Seat reservations are not included in tickets purchased on board the train. The Inlandsbanan Card costs SEK 1,595. The card, which acts as your ticket, is valid for 14 days on Inlandsbanan. Add a week for another SEK 400 per card per adult. Seat reservations cost SEK 50 per section of the journey in addition to the Inlandsbanan Card. By section of the journey we mean a single journey from one place to another made on the same day e.g. Kristinehamn–Mora, Östersund–Vilhelmina. Cycles – It is possible to take your bike on the train if there is space at a cost of SEK 50 per section of the journey. Space for cycles cannot be booked in advance and you should pay the train host in cash. Pets – Pets can travel with you for SEK 50 per section of the journey. Let us know when you book if a pet will be coming with you on your journey. All pets must travel on the floor in sections where animals are permitted.

Discounts Family discounts Two children (up to their 16th birthday) travel free when accompanied by an adult. Additional children pay half the standard fare. Seat reservations can be purchased for children at a price of SEK 50 per section of the journey. Children’s discount Unaccompanied children (up to their 16th birthday) have a discount of 50% on tickets and the Inlandsbanan Card. See also Family Discounts. Youth discount Youths aged 16–25 receive a 25% discount on tickets and the Inlandsbanan Card. Discount of SEK 400 on package tours. Student discount Students carrying a valid student card and ID receive a 25% discount on tickets and the Inlandsbanan Card. Discount of SEK 400 on package tours.

Pensioners’ discount Pensioners who have turned 65 as well as those who have retired due to ill health and those who have retired early receive a 10% discount on tickets and the Inlandsbanan Card on production of the relevant certification. Discount of SEK 160 on package tours. Groups 10% group discount on tickets and the Inlandsbanan Cards when at least 10 paying passengers travel together. To qualify for a group discount: • The whole group must travel on the same section of the railway. • It is not possible to combine the group discount with other discounts. International passengers Eurail and InterRail tickets are valid on Inlandsbanan. We recommend booking a seat in advance to ensure that you will have a seat on the train at a price of SEK 50 per person per section of the journey.
