Welcome to my ERASMUS + workshop on British Education.

By Inmaculada Guadix

Education in U.K. In the U.K there are two types of Schools:

State-founded Schools (Spanish public schools)

Public Schools or Independent Schools or Private Schools (Spanish private schools and fee-charging schools)

State education - Britain was one of the ďŹ rst countries to have free compulsory education. - After age of 5 it is compulsory. But they usually enrol at 4, because it is free. - Usually they are half a day or only some days. - The main reason is to avoid paying child care, since it is free until the age of 4.

There are different Schools because there are different ways to manage them.

Community Schools. (Local authority) Foundation Schools. (Own CURRICULUM & own pedagogy) Academies. (government and no locals) Grammar Schools. (City Hall, they choose their students) Special Schools. (Special needs) Faith Schools. (Religious) Free schools. ( Funded by the Government, but they choose their salary. Autonomy). Public or independent Schools. (Not funded by the state, they charge the students a fee)

All of them can be divided into 2 different teaching Styles

Grammar : students have to take an exam to be admitted. There are only 164 in England and 69 in Northern Ireland. But now, with the new political changes they might become trendy.

Comprehensive: at present 90% of students are enrolled in this kind of school.

CHOOSING A SCHOOL In England different schools have different curriculum. In Wales there are 160 schools. In Cardiff there are 20 Schools. 2 Protestant Schools 2 Catholic Schools 3 WELSH (bilingual) 13 State

These are the best infographics to understand the Bristish School System. Age 4 to 11 is primary school, it can be divided into Infant school (age 4 to 7) and junior school (age 7 to 11). Between the ages of 11 to 16, students attend secondary school and 16 to 18 either stay at the same school and go to sixth form or move to a school speciďŹ cally for education between 16 and 18 years, this is called sixth form college. Some schools are divided dierently. They have First school age 4 to 9, Middle school age 9 to 13 and Upper school age 13 to 18.

THE SCHOOL YEARS IN ENGLAND AND WALES In general, the cut-off point for ages is the end of August, so all children must be of a particular age on the 1st of September in order to begin class that month.

The School Year has Three terms.

Total schooling 39 weeks for teachers (195 days) Pupils 38 weeks or 190 days Teachers have to take 5 days for teacher training. They are called INSET DAYS, in service training. Teachers can also apply for courses during those days. It is the head teacher who may allow it.

Spanish First Term is called AUTUMN TERM ( first Monday in September , till near Christmas) 16 weeks, but in the middle we have HALF TERM, last week in October. At Christmas there is a 2 weeks holidays and we go back to school.

Second Term is SPRING TERM or EASTER TERM. It starts the first Monday of January. Easter holiday can vary. That term varies in length. There is one week holiday. Third week in February.

Third Term is SUMMER TERM lasts till the third week July. There's one week holiday, in May. 6 weeks holiday for summer.

How is the daily timetable organised? Each school organises its timetable differently. Lessons might last 35, 40, 45, 55 or 60 minutes! For each subject, a student will attend classes for about 5 hours a week, and is also expected to undertake at least 6 hours private study. Students will usually also attend classes in General Studies, or Philosophy, or other similar subjects. There will also be time given to Physical Education or Sport, whether or not these are taken as subjects for studying.

What activities are organised outside lessons? Along with sport, schools offer a substantial programme of "extra-curricular activities"; that is, activities which are able to offer students a wide range of experiences, intellectual, cultural and relaxing. Music, drama, science and literary societies are offered in all schools, and there will be opportunities for outdoor education and other leisure activities. Visits to theatres and concerts, to places relevant to the courses of study (such as art galleries and museums, religious centres or historical sites, scientific companies and projects) are all part of life in a school Sixth Form.

How to become a teacher in the U.K PGCE/ TEACHERS QUALIFICATION. It doesn’t have to be the same uni you attended, the thing is you train on the job. There is no tutor, no tuition fee, you have to choose if you are going to be a primary or secondary teacher. Before Christmas you go to a school, the other 2 terms, to another, and at the end you are supposed to teach 30% of a teacher's timetable. There are no exams, it is continuous assessment. Then, you search for a school. But it is the school that appoints the teachers. They announce it in the press and they decide it. Then you become a NQT, A NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHER MIN OF 22 AGE AND YOU GET PAID, 10% FREE TIME TO CONTINUING PREPARING. IF YOU PASS, THEN YOU CAN BE A SCHOOL MEMBER, TILL YOU WISH, OR YOU GET SACKED. BEING A HEAD OF DEPARTMENT IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MONEY AND A PERMANENT JOB.

An indoor School Hall

This is a typical Exam Room in U.K.

Rows are labeled vertically in Letters and horizontically in numbers. OďŹƒcial Exams are taken in here, but an external oďŹƒcial person brings the sealed envelopes. There are external exams vigilants .And they are checked by external teachers.

It is very significant that this is the very first photo I've shot in a British School, and it is the very first place we were shown. This examination a timetable is very important form them. Students are reminded about the exams Dates.

British Schools make their results public. Schools compete. That explains why students have to pass so many oďŹƒcial exams, and why teachers train students in their lessons most of the time.

After a meeting with the Head Master, two students welcomed us with a proper informative presentation of their school they have done themselves. They were very proud of it.

Each School has its own Identity. Something dierent from the others Schools: their methodology CURRICULUM, their School Motto, their School Uniform.

School Motto: " opportunity to succeed"

Every single wall teaches at Barry. Here are THEIR CLASSROOM RULES

Welcome the English Department. Correct. Rooms at both sides of this corridor, all of them devoted to English Language and Literature, Teacher's sta room and each teacher's classroom.

Guess, In which Department may I be now?

Excuse me, I'm lost? Could you tell me where I am, please?

Students who need some extra help to follow the curriculum go to this classroom.

This was an interesting Classroom. It is a mixture between Mediation, emotional intelligence and Orientation? They have a platform to keep it conďŹ dential. It is called ELSA. ELSA stands for emotion literacy learning support assistance.

Students can belong to dierent team groups or departments. This is Barry Student Parliament.

At the Canteen They use a Fob.

DO you want the know what a fob is and what is it for?

Students do not use real money at school and in this way they keep their privacy and prevent dierences among students.

DRAMA CLASSROOM

Drama is a well approved subject. Students love Drama.

THEY are very proud of their achievement. They have excellent results and have been awarded.

The requirement for entry to Sixth Form courses is ďŹ ve grade C GCSE passes or equivalent. The Barry 6th Form welcomes students from around the globe. International students for 2009 joined us from the Czech Republic, Columbia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Malaysia, Norway, Taiwan, Thailand and Venezuela.

I may say that the students' behavior was impeccable, not only in class but also in the corridos. They were very polite and the school was neat, tidy and clean everywhere.

At the end of Year 11 you make a voluntary decision to return to school to further your education. The Barry Sixth Form, in considering your academic needs, makes a decision to accept you or not. Being accepted is a two way process and you will be required to approach this new stage in your career with a sense of responsibility and commitment. All Year 12 students will be asked to accept our basic rules. You will have more freedom in the Sixth Form to devise your own study programme.

Now they are given a few minutes to hand write examples on an individual plastic board, not typing. The teacher devotes each day time to a Different group of students. Skill diversity, dynamic lesson.

Notice that their computer has the screen off.

Students help each other. Then the teacher numbers the students and they group only with numbers one. Team Work

Later they have to do a dierent activity, they have to talk and agree and write it on a card in group in a SPEAKING activity and standing up.

This teacher has been awarded by his book, a book where the students have to ďŹ ll in the learnt concepts step by step, individually, but at the same time imposes collaboration, since before giving their own feedback, a partner's feedback is required to go on.

ENGLISH LESSON.

Jon NOWACZYK English Room 115

The students are given time to do a written task. They have to do it on their individual small white boards. It is on Body language.

Then Students are given some paper to do a quiz. The whole idea is EFFECTIVE DELIVERY. They willl deal with this content in the next lesson. They are only given some minutes, not enough to do all of them. They must finish them at home.

Then they'll do a Kahoot. The teacher provides them and us, the visitor teachers an iPad each.

At this school teachers were rather attentive to us and they were willing to share all their knowledge and materials with us. After job shadowing we attended to Emma Kemp's presentation on iPads apps to enhance student engagement. This as many other ICT apps, web pages and more, I'll be glad to share in another workshop.

Students from this school will be making the news for real on 16 March 2017 as they take part in BBC News School Report. They aim to publish the news by 1600 GMT on News Day. http://www.maryimmaculate.org.uk/ bbc-school-report/
