LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Another year has passed us by, and as this long-awaited summer approaches, everyone has begun to reflect upon and to remember the memories of our time at school. At Choate, time can sometimes seem as if it’s at a standstill, but by June, it feels like Convocation was only last week. What you wear reflects some part of who you are and how you feel, and it’s always influenced by the season and the weather. In the same way the weather has finally changed from dark, cold days to warm, sunny ones, we have finally been able to shed our heavy New England winter layers in exchange for a much lighter set. Transition is the theme of this moment in our lives, and as time passes and we mature, so do our styles and wardrobes. Whether you’re a senior saying goodbye or an underclassman moving up the ladder, every new year–even every term–brings some change to our personal styles. The very concept of back-to-school and seasonal shopping is that we have a chance to change, if we wish. That’s something that I love about fashion: if you want to change something about yourself, often changing your wardrobe (your appearance) is a step in the process. This only reinforces the idea that a wardrobe is a part of the way one expresses oneself. Whether you’re making a change in what you wear and how you look or building upon and reinforcing your personal style, year-to-year and season-to-season fashion can act as a helpful tool for that transition. Whether you choose to make a change or make a statement in style this summer, I hope that this issue of In Moda will act as a source of inspiration. Sophie Imamura ‘15 Editor-In-Chief

ON THE AGENDA

this summer in fashion , music, and art

City Sleeker

style tips for an urban summer

richard lee ‘16

Thanks to New York, we have the perception that in the city, we wear black. Yes- black is sleek and fashionable…but isn’t it too mundane? There are other styles that you can embrace to fit in among the chic cosmopolitan fashionistas. If you want to stand out, while maintaining an ease of look, some trends to try include cheetah prints, skinny jeans, anoraks, loose-cut leather jackets, denim jackets and vests, and even wedge sneakers. Since it’s now summer, lace clothes (take style cues from brands like Valentino) are a way to layer lightly. As far as accessories go, sturdy, dependable pieces like Tom Ford shades and Céline totes are on trend for girls.

For men, city style holds a wide range of trends; in my opinion, men should color it up in terms of their wardrobes. It’s not that all men wear black, but I think that there should be a wider range of vivid colors mixed in with the usual ray bans and gelled hair. For brands, my personal favourites are Armani, Comme des Garçons, Hermés, and Brunello Cucinelli. To look sleek, I think striped shirts, cargo pants, leather jackets, and polos are the best options for men.

BAG OF THE MOMENT Craze Over Céline’s Luggage Tote cindy lim ‘14

They’re everywhere. On the fashion-focused streets of New York City, Boston, Tokyo, Stockholm, and Seoul, a Celine luggage tote is a must have for fashionistas. And it’s no surprise that more and more celebrities are donning themselves with the same bag in different colors and patterns. Its charming structure and versatility attracts the bag owners to an extent that they will never want to switch their everyday bag for at least a month, or even a season. In fact, Celine may be the new Birkin. Emily Anderson from “The Purse Blog” writes that celebrities “give [their] birkins a rest in favor of a Celine Luggage Tote.”

WE WANNA BE ADORNED jewelry and eye-candy galore for this summer rachel keith ‘15

Chunky statement necklaces, Grecian-style arm cuffs, knuckle rings, stacks of braided and brass bracelets…we’re crossing the boundaries of oversized pearl earrings into exciting new territories here, people. Gabrielle Chanel once said, “The point of jewelry isn’t to make a woman look rich but to adorn her; not the same thing.” To adorn is to enhance, to beautify, to glamorize, to frost. Conveniently, for us, voguish accessory combinations these days are beyond accessible. However, one doesn’t need to spend $8,000 on a Cartier Love Bracelet, $3,000 on Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra earrings, or $725 on a Tiffany & Co. Diamonds by the Yard Pendant. Cheaper stores with fine quality offer similar designs for less. Alternative options, like Me & Ro and Chan Luu, offer unique and edgy designs for reasonable prices, and-spoiler alert-they last! Change the meaning of a summer dress with a bib necklace or a stack of bangles. Forever21 has one of the largest inventories of cheap jewelry in existence! However, if you aren’t someone who likes buying cheap jewelry (granted, it is cheap and therefore fragile), it’s ok to splurge now and then. If PhDs were given in splurging, I would have one from Yale-and an honorary one from Harvard, too! Do your research online on timeless, versatile pieces like a feminine wrap bracelet or just a pair of cute skull stud earrings. If you’re looking to expand your wrist-stack, I’m partial to Stella & Dot. This fall, I discovered the Pegasus necklace at a Stella & Dot trunk show, and I felt like I had an accessory revelation. If you’re looking for something summery and colorful, look to Frieda & Nellie, and if you’re looking for something elegant with an edgy twist, check out House of Harlow.

BEAUTY BEATS THE RAIN

brands to turn to for fashion on rainy days richard lee ‘16

For boots, Hunters are classic, and Jimmy Choos are classy. I am adamantly opposed to Tims! For coats and accessories, I’ve found great items from Burberry, Zara, Moncler, and the North Face.

from California. Like most fashion blogs, she posts photos of herself in different outfits, showcasing her unique style. What I love about Fashiontoast goes beyond her insane photos; Rumi’s writing that accompanies her photo posts always delivers. Her tone is funny, endearing, and clean, complementing her cool, chic style. <www.fashiontoast.com>

BLOGS RE VIEWED Stylerookie

sophie imamura ‘15

Tavi Gevinson, a high-school girl who possesses the highest level of sophistication and intelligence of any blogger (maybe any person) I’ve ever seen, runs Stylerookie. After blogging for a few years, she created Rookie, an online teen magazine for girls. She and her staff of writers talk about everything from Beyonce to sexism, self confidence, stuff of the early 2000’s, and everything else that is relevant in today’s confusing world of being a teenager. <www.stylerookie.com>

BLEACHBLACK , a fashion blog with a minimalist aesthetic, combines the opinions and

musings of two ladies, Kristin Reiter and Valerie Killeen. The page is divided into two columns, one for each of them to share their latest fashion interests on. The two collide in one page to create a space that is surprisingly consistent. <www.bleachblack.com>

transitional advice on spring trends to carry into summer jamie trubiwitsch ‘15

Spring has gone, and it’s time to truly start that summer tan. You put away all your darks and chunky knits months ago, and in lieu of these came spring’s bright colors, patterns, and bold styles. I saw many people gradually mixing things up with color blocking this season. I think that patterned accessories can liven up any outfit, whether they’re in the form of a scarf, a headband (á la Blair Waldorf), a belt, or jewelry. Like preppy Greenwich girls, it was pastels all day, every day, here at Choate. Clean is key in the preppy look, but in order to avoid looking grandmotherly, keep hemlines short-but tasteful-and try to add pops of neon or modern jewelry to maintain a youthful vibe. Layers were important in Spring’s temperamental weather, and I view the extra pieces as just more opportunities to make an outfit more interesting, while simultaneously keeping you comfortable. Silk, linen, open knits, and jersey cotton can be worn alone, or mixed together, to really update a look. Wearing a variety of different textures is incredibly in.

STYLISH SPORT the phenomenon of the fashionable sneaker elli sandberg ‘16

Whether high-tops, flats, platforms, wedges, dip dyed, studed, sparkly, or printed, everyone needs a pair of fashionable sneakers! Here are the newest and coolest trends of sneakers for the warm weather. A fashionable sneaker? Does such a thing exist? Well, it does: The wedge sneaker. Originally designed by Isabelle Marant, the renowned French fashion house, these shoes have gone around the world in all different designs, with so many imitating retailers. Whether pink, black, orange, red, lace, velcro, or zipper, wedge sneakers are made in every style imaginable. Wanna take a run, or just walk around? Whatever your plans are this summer, Nike AirMax are always a good choice. These somewhat funky but hip-looking sneakers come in all different colours, and have the ability to freshen up every jeans outfit. And now to the sneaker evergreen… hightops! Any weather, any colour, any shape. There are so many choices. Nike, Osiris, FMS, Converse, and Adidas are classic personal favorites. Here are some ideas to pep up your closet : How about some dipdye? Converse, Vans, and Keds have some awesome new designs. Sparkles? Anyone up for some glitter? Old Navy, Converse, Vans, Prada and Miu Miu can help you show some sparkle. Studs! They are everywhere, you can have them on your sneakers too now. Superga, Vans, and Converse are brands into embellishment. If you’re bored by all the normal colours, try some new patterns: From galaxy to animal print, Vans, Nike, and Study are my go-to’s.
