ANNUAL FUND
2017
INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEADMASTER Stonyhurst has thrived because it has always sought to change and develop according to the needs of the young people in the College at the time and within the context of an ever changing world. During the autumn of 2016 the College undertook a listening exercise to discern the strategic direction of Stonyhurst for the next ten years. Thank you for your input into what has been a fascinating and important process. I will publish the findings and full strategy at Great Academies, but in the meantime I wanted to highlight the three strategic educational themes which have emerged and clearly articulate ‘our way of proceeding’ as a Jesuit school. Educational excellence - our aspiration to promote educational excellence and human competence. This is wonderfully captured in the school motto ‘Quant Je Puis’ (All that I can). Faith that does justice - we seek to nourish the spirit and form ’men and women for others’. Perspectives and horizons - St. Ignatius asks us to stand at the margins and look to the horizon. To take a world view and to ‘set the world on fire’. Under each of these themes we are developing a number of projects and some of these will invite current parents as well as members of the wider Stonyhurst family to offer their skills and experience as well as resources to enhance the educational experience of our young people. In the interim we have identified a number of projects which we hope will directly benefit students at the College and St. Mary’s Hall and I am writing to ask for your help through the Annual Fund Appeal. We would gratefully value any gift you feel able to make to the Annual Fund and thank you for your support in advance.

BURSARIES PLEASE HELP TO GIVE THE GIFT OF EDUCATION
The provision of Bursaries allows Stonyhurst to look beyond parental wealth to an applicant’s intellect, character and ability. In doing so we create the varied social mix which has always been so characteristic of the School. The best way for us to secure this is to expand our Bursary Fund. It is important to us that we continue to widen our welcome.

hopeful curious attentive wise faith-filled grateful generous eloquent discerning intentional compassionate active truthful
We are proud to have remained true to this objective since the School’s foundation. Stonyhurst has a solid heritage of providing Bursaries and we continue to be in a strong position in the increasingly demanding requirement for independent schools to be seen to be contributing to the wider community and providing an outstanding education to deserving students.

VIDEO CONFERENCING FACILITIES £25,000
“The world is our hoUSE”
JEROME NADaL SJ
An essential element of a Jesuit education is take a world view. We hope to buy two sets of video conferencing equipment for the College and St. Mary’s Hall to enable us to strengthen our links with Jesuit Institutions throughout the world and to build new ones, helping the students to understand that they are global citizens. Through international education our students will gain a greater understanding of global cultures and issues beyond the UK. They will share perspectives with their peers throughout the world and help form a broader understanding of world events. Our staff and students can share their expertise and knowledge with other schools. The equipment will also allow our Historical Collections to be shared ‘virtually’ with our students teaching others about the wonderful objects the collections hold. This will enable them to: • debate topics with students in other schools • l ink with business leaders, developing employment skills •h ave their aspirations raised by understanding the world beyond Stonyhurst • connect with our partner schools on a more regular basis to enhance the exchange programmes available • learn from experts in universities who are not able to visit the College, strengthening our students’ enjoyment of their subjects and their aspirations • have professional technology to use for applications to universities worldwide Stonyhurst has always been proud of its international perspective. This equipment will allow our students to experience the world and their education in new and exciting ways.

Shooting at Stonyhurst ÂŁ15,000
Owing to the continued success and growing interest in shooting at Stonyhurst we would like to develop our facilities by introducing a new Shotgun Range for the use of our students and the wider Stonyhurst community. In recent years the School shooting team has won many awards and is fast building a reputation as being the team to beat. Over the last four years they have won the North West District Loyals and Home Guards Trophy, The Elizabeth McGuiness Trophy, The Cadets Gallery Rifle Competition and the Financial Times Trophy and achieved gold, silver and bronze medals for F-Class rifle and clay pigeon at Bisley. It is hoped to progress more in the Shotgun Class and enter both regional and country wide shotgun competitions.

Let’s Dance! £5,000 Over the past five years the interest in, and the uptake of, dance at Hodder House, St. Mary’s Hall and the College has developed greatly, offering dance tuition from pre-school level, building on a child’s sense of spatial awareness, co-ordination, social interaction and cognitive development through creative dance activity right through to the study of graded and vocational exam work with The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD.) This is a department which has great potential to continue to progress in support of individual development as well as in the enhancement of the arts faculty within the School life at Stonyhurst. The dance department operates primarily from the old gym space within the College and has been improving its facilities and equipment over the years.

WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP THE Jesuit Refugee Service £10,000
For some time now there has been a drive and commitment amongst the students at SMH and the College to be genuinely ‘active’ in the face of the growing refugee crisis. Strong links have been developed with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) based in London and there is now an ambition to reach out from Stonyhurst and help refugee children and families in the very best way we can. There is an ‘energy and commitment’ from the students but a considerable degree of very skilled advice and knowledge is required if we are to fulfil this ambition and satisfy a fundamental aspect of our mission. We are proposing to pilot a scheme here at Stonyhurst to lead the way for all Jesuit Schools in the UK; breathing life into a compassionate and relevant response from our Jesuit School Community to help those less fortunate than ourselves when they are at their most vulnerable. To this end we are seeking funding to support JRS in launching this scheme which will enable them to recruit a member of staff who will be able to provide JRS with legal expertise and professional knowledge and who will guide and assist Stonyhurst and other Jesuit Schools in our endeavour to take this project forward. This professional support for JRS will help the Stonyhurst Community to launch a truly life giving programme.

WHERE STONYHURST NEEDS IT MOST Unrestricted gifts are very important as they provide the school with the flexibility to use these funds where the need is greatest. During each financial year the school must deal with a variety of unexpected projects, some of which cannot be deferred. The Headmaster and senior staff will choose what they think are the projects most worthy of funding ensuring your gift provides the maximum benefit to Stonyhurst.
