Annual Giving report 2018 - 2019

A message from the Headmaster Over recent years Stonyhurst has been incredibly fortunate to have had the generous support of OS, parents, and friends who have worked tirelessly maintaining and strengthening relationships with the College and providing the funds required to enable us to go from strength to strength. The return of the newly-restored Our Lady of the Avenue is perhaps one of the most visible symbols of this support and her presence watching over us, down the Avenue to the College, reminds us of what we can achieve when we work together as ‘men and women for others’. The rededication and blessing of the statue on 25th May 2019 allowed us a perfect moment to reflect upon this. The 425 Bursary Appeal was a resounding success as was the completion of the Genesis Appeal. As we celebrate the successes of the past year, we must reflect on our great responsibility to manage, steward and grow Stonyhurst’s resources to ensure that future generations may continue to benefit from all that Stonyhurst has to offer.

The £425 for 425 Bursary Appeal The 425 Bursary Appeal was launched during the 2018/2019 academic year, commemorating the 425th anniversary of the foundation of the school. This was an ambitious initiative, conceived by the External Affairs Team, OS,

and current parents to create a Designated Fund that would permanently endow a bursary for a pupil right through College; from their first day at St Mary’s Hall until their Rhetoric Leavers’ Mass.

Total Achieved = £188,723

To commemorate this appeal and to acknowledge the donors a new St Omer’s Cross has been commissioned which stands outside the Centenaries Theatre at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. Donors are recognised under the following giving circles:

1763 Bruges Circle £4250

After only six months our goal was surpassed. £188,723 of net funds was raised and has been directed entirely to the bursary fund. This was thanks not only to the amazing generosity of our OS, parent and former parent community

THE OBSERVATORY

Completion of the Genesis Appeal The College landscape and gardens hold a special and enduring place in the hearts of all those with a connection to Stonyhurst. The avenues and gardens have provided generations of pupils, OS, parents and friends with the space for reflection and tranquil enjoyment. The Genesis Project recognised that there was a need to invest in the preservation and restoration of important parts of estate and the baroque gardens first laid out by Sir Nicholas Shireburn. Thanks to your generosity and support of the ambitious Genesis Project, our wonderful statue of Our Lady of Stonyhurst was restored to her rightful position at the top of the Avenue in May 2019. This was generously funded by OS. Work to drain and restore the canals was completed in August 2019 and the College Observatory was also re-roofed.

Gifts left to Stonyhurst have created bursaries and scholarships and contributed to the environment in which our pupils live and work. Each year they contribute a significant amount to our highest priorities.

The Thomas Weld Society Membership of the Thomas Weld Society has been offered to those who have generously made a legacy gift to Stonyhurst, maintaining the connection with our first and most generous benefactor, Thomas Weld in 1794. Many of those who leave a legacy to the College have chosen to become members of the Society. During the Christmas term, members are invited to the annual Thomas Weld Society lunch which is held in the Top Ref.

All pupils and staff at Stonyhurst and Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall received a ‘425’ lapel pin at our St Omers Martyrs Mass in February 2019. It was a fitting occasion as we gathered to remember the St Omers Martyrs, of whom St Thomas Garnet, one of the first pupils at St Omers, 425 years ago, was the first saint and martyr of our school. In May 2019, forty members of the Stonyhurst community took part in a sponsored cycle ride from London to the Church of St Pierre du Montmartre, in Paris. The money raised was donated to three charities, the Stonyhurst Children’s Holiday Trust (SCHT), the Xavier Project and the Lourdes Pilgrimage arranged by the Association. In July 2019, the Stonyhurst Gentlemen’s eleven travelled to Rome to play matches against the Vatican Cricket Team and Roma Capannelle. This team was funded in large part by generous OS benefactors, some of whom were able to join us on the tour and at Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. Other initiatives included the commissioning of Stonyhurst Monopoly, which was launched at Great Academies, as well as with the launch of Stonyhurst label Bordeaux and Sauvignon Blanc wines. A celebratory Stonyhurst golden ale, ‘Eagle Towers’ was also commissioned. Withnell’s Lancashire Craft Ales created the Stonyhurst ale, ‘Eagle Towers’ available in a variety of pubs and restaurants in Lancashire.

Recurring Bursary Donations

As in past years, bursaries comprised the largest percentage of total funds raised, fuelled in part by the success of our 425 Bursary Appeal. This underscores our commitment to widening access to a Stonyhurst education for all regardless of family financial circumstances.

One OS tells us of the life changing opportunity he received thanks to a bursary: I know I have been so privileged to grow up at Stonyhurst; a privilege which would have been impossible without a bursary. I sincerely hope I will always be able fully to live up to those uniquely Ignatian and ‘Stonyhurst’ values the

school has long aimed to instil in its pupils: to discern what I think, and be able to stand by it; to discern my talents, and to use them as much as I can for others; to discern who I am, and how best I might serve the world around me. I am honoured to support a cause which will enable others like me to benefit from this special place, and all that Stonyhurst has to offer.” Joe Reed OS 11
