girls’ Preparatory School Co-Curricular Booklet 2021-2022 1
LETTER FROM THE HEAD 2
One of the greatest things we can do as a School is give pupils the opportunity to try out the previously unexplored and unimagined. This in turn enables them to have fun, enjoy exciting experiences, develop new talents and find out what ‘their thing’ might just be. We are very proud of the co-curricular offering at the Girls’ Prep School, as we believe it gives the pupils a broad spectrum of activities from which to choose. Reading through this booklet gives you a great sense of what is on offer, and I hope that you enjoy talking to your daughters about which clubs they would most like to attend. I cannot wait to see these groups up and running, as the girls take full advantage of all the exciting opportunities available to them, and I have no doubt that we will see some new skills and aspirations emerge!

Music Tech Club The Music Tech Club is a new offering this year and suits children of all abilities; from boys and girls who already play an instrument through to those discovering music for the first time. Focusing on key musical concepts such as melody, harmony, rhythm and arrangement, we ensure that your child gains a full understanding of how music is created note by note. Each term, children work in pairs and complete a fun and engaging project by creating music to various forms of media. Projects range from making music for TV adverts, movie trailers, radio shows and cartoons through to composing in a range of musical styles.

Trips and Visits
Due to current circumstances, residentials trips are subject to change. Below are the residentials that the girls have been on in
Residential Trips previous years.
We believe that residential trips away form a vital part of the girls’ personal and social development. Girls have the opportunity to build on their independence and self-confidence, strengthen friendships and take on challenges that they may have once thought beyond them. In Year 3, the girls go away for a one-night trip to Hindleap Warren (approximately £135). In Year 4, they go further afield for a twonight trip to Hooke Court in Dorset (approximately £225). Year 5 girls also go to Dorset, but for three nights in the coastal town of Swanage (approximately £335). In the Summer Term, they visit the UK Sailing Academy (UKSA) in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The girls will take part in a variety of watersports, including dinghy sailing, keelboating, stand up paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking (approximately £510). All the girls come back from each trip with treasured memories that can last a lifetime!

Houses and Charity
The House system is an important part of school life. Each of the girls belong to one of three Houses – Arundel, Balmoral or Caernarvon. There are a number of competitions across the year in which the girls compete against each other while representing their House. These are hotly contested and vary each term, but recent battles have included a selection of sporting competitions, as well as our joint Prep annual singing competition. Every year usually culminates in our Sports

the School to support over the course of a term. They are required to give a short presentation to the Charity Committee, detailing the reasons why the charity is important to them and why we should support them. They also outline their ideas for fundraising events. Six to eight of these charities are shortlisted and are then presented to the whole School, who then have the unenviable task of voting for the two pupilchosen charities that will be supported over the coming year.
The girls have displayed kindness, understanding and generosity through our charity events this year. The Charity Committee have been very creative and came up with Dress up as a Teacher Day, Surbiton’s Greatest Dancer, The Christmas Shoeboxes for SPEAR and our very own Charity Cookbook. We continue, as a community, to build awareness of why we support our charities and how we can contribute to the wider community.

House System
At Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School,
Day and 2021 was no exception with each bubbled year group competing together to raise points for their House. Each House is led by a teacher and two House Captains. The Year 6 girls are given the opportunity to put themselves forward as the most eligible candidates to lead their House to victory. Voting takes place each September and the elected captains are responsible for leading their House for the rest of the year. Throughout each term, all the girls in the School are keen to receive House points that go towards the weekly totals.

The Pupil Leadership Team
Form Captains Every form also nominates girls to be chosen as Form Captains. Their role is to support and assist their teachers and peers within the classroom. They are also given control of a small budget, which they are encouraged to spend on improving their Form Room. Girls are encouraged to ‘apply’ for these positions and to consider what qualities they have that are suitable for the role.
Every September, a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary are elected from Year 6. These three girls are joined by a representative from each class (from Year 1 upwards) who are elected by their class at the start of the year. The Pupil Leadership Team (PLT) meet regularly with the Deputy Head to discuss their forms, any concerns they may have, and their suggestions to improve school life. In Key Stage 2, the representatives use their iPads, and in Key Stage 1, a suggestion book, for members to record their ideas for improving the School, which are discussed each week. Then, each term, the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary ensure any concerns raised are being addressed and that any projects are being successfully led.
Charity Committee At the heart of our school’s ethos is the importance of teaching our girls the importance of doing good deeds for others, using love and citizenship as our guiding forces. Therefore, we have a separate Charity Committee to ensure that our charitable work is focused and genuinely worthwhile. Not only does the Committee play an instrumental role in shortlisting the chosen charities for the forthcoming year, but they then meet regularly to organise the various charity events that the School puts on. Charity Committee members are vital to the successful fundraising that we, as a School, have done and continue to achieve for our local and wider community.

During the holiday periods, the gymnastics coaching staff run a Gym Club. The sessions are divided into two age groups: Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, which will cater for all ages and abilities. We will work on the basics of movement and balance in Key Stag 1 and then move on to more advanced jumps, rolls and sequences in Key Stage 2. We will also introduce some pair and group work for both age groups, as well as some fun gymnastic-based games as part of the warm-up and cool-down. For more information, please contact Mr Adam Buckingham via email at adam.buckingham@surbitonhigh.com.
How do I enrol my daughter in a club? You will have received this Co-curricular Booklet, via MIS, outlining further information about the clubs that we are offering for 2021-2022. All bookings for clubs are made on our online booking portal, SOCS (login details are sent to you as part of your Friday Communications). Following this sign-up, you will be able to log in to see which clubs your daughter has been allocated for the Autumn Term 2021. For the Spring and Summer Terms, registration details will be sent to you soon after the half term in October and February, respectively. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Penny and Mrs Farr via email at prepclubs@ surbitonhigh.com.
