Boys’ Preparatory School Co-Curricular Booklet 2020-2021 1
Letter from Mrs Chong, Head of the Boys’ Preparatory School Our Co-curricular programme here at Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory is unrivalled. Our tailored provision commitment ensures that all boys have the opportunity to further their interests outside of the school day and enrich their learning and sense of enjoyment. There are all sorts of opportunities on offer through the Co-curricular provision and we encourage all pupils to try something new or hone their skills in their chosen pastime, whether that be robotics, horse riding, skiing or baking. There are so many options to choose from; just take a look inside.
Mrs Chong
This booklet was created for the 2020-2021 academic year, expecting a full timetable to run. Whilst it has had to be paired back owing to the restrictions of COVID, this provides a full breadth of the offering available during a normal school year.

Art
Each Art session is based on a famous artist or art form. We learn facts about the artist’s technique and life, then the pupils create their own interpretation of what we have looked at. This includes sculpture, painting, drawing 2D and 3D. Art Club can be enjoyed by all, either as a time to have fun (as there is no right or wrong way to paint), or as a place to help your son work on his skills and portfolio if he does wish to apply for an Art Scholarship. Additional Information: Pupils need to wear an apron or old shirt.

Whether they want to improve their technique ready for a family holiday or want to develop into a ski racer, this club provides a platform to cover it all. Due to the nature of the sport and to ensure quality of coaching and maximisation of progress, there are limited places and the club runs throughout the whole year. This means that we are not always
able to take on newcomers mid-way through the year. We do run learn to ski courses for those who haven’t skied before in preparation for joining the club the following year. Our aim is to keep pupils involved in swimming to help improve every stroke and also to develop the enjoyment of a life skill.

Tours and Trips
Residential Trips Throughout Key Stage 2, the boys have the opportunity to take part in one of the residential trips which traditionally take place during the Summer Term. The aim of each trip is to teach the boys new skills which will be increased as they progress through Key Stage 2 and to provide them with numerous and varying experiences and team building opportunities. The planned residential trips are listed below: • Year 3 - a 2-day/1-night visit to Juniper Hall, Dorking (approximately £150) • Year 4 - a 3-day/2-night visit to PGL, Little Canada, Isle of Wight (approximately £320) • Year 5 - a 4-day/3-night visit to Stella Maris, France (approximately £430) • Year 6 - a 5-day/4-night visit to Bushcraft, Hampshire (approximately £480)

Year 3 Juniper Hall This is the first residential for Year 3 boys and the first overnight adventure for many. We have a marvellous time taking part in various activities such as hiking up Box Hill, water infiltration experiments, sand experiments and mammal traps, to name but a few activities.
Year 4 PGL
Little Canada, Isle of Wight
Little Canada provides the perfect waterside location to experience a range of land and water-based activities on the Isle of Wight. The centre’s facilities are located in a central area surrounded by the accommodation. The boys will have access to a fantastic range of land-based activities such as abseiling, climbing, zip wire and Jacob’s Ladder, all within the grounds of the centre. In addition, there is also the opportunity to take part in various water sports which are just a few minutes’ walk away on the beach or landing stage. 39
Tours and Trips
Year 5 French Trip Pupils in Year 5 are given the opportunity to take part in a fourday trip to Northern France, near Le Touquet. The aim of the trip is for the boys to experience being immersed in a foreign country, to develop their linguistic skills and learn more about the cultural aspects of France. During their stay, boys will have both educational and fun experiences, developing greater independence and strengthening friendships away from the classroom.
40
Year 6 Bushcraft In the Summer Term of Year 6, the boys have a residential trip which is organised in conjunction with the Bushcraft Company and consists of five days and four nights sleeping under canvas! The course combines traditional
Bushcraft workshops including learning to light fires (under supervision), building shelters and cooking their own food with other adventurous activities.

Houses and Charity
House System
The House System is an important part of school life. Each boy belongs to one of three Houses – Arundel, Balmoral or Caernarvon. There are a number of competitions across the year in which the boys compete against each other while representing their House. These contests may vary each term. The year culminates in a House Sports Day, in which all pupils from both the Girls’ Prep and the Boys’ Prep Schools participate. Each House is led by a teacher and a House Captain and Deputy. The Year 6 boys are given the opportunity to put themselves forward as the most eligible candidates 42
to lead their House to victory. The elected captains are responsible for leading their House for the rest of the year. Throughout each term, all the boys in the School are keen to receive House points that go towards the weekly totals. As a new initiative, termly Junior House Captains are selected from Year 3 boys. On an individual basis, boys also receive awards of bronze, silver, gold and platinum to celebrate their hard work and exemplary behaviour.
Charities
At Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School, we actively encourage and support boys to participate in a range of fundraising activities. Numerous fundraising events are held and celebrated throughout the year, reinforcing the School’s motto, ‘May Love Always Lead Us’ and supporting the ethos to serve and respect others.
why the charity is important to them and the reasons why we should choose the charity. The School Council then shortlist four or five charities. These charities will then be presented in front of the whole School. The pupils then select three charities for the following year to support. We try, wherever possible, to invite a representative from the charity to present an assembly to the School in order to broaden the boys’ knowledge of the importance of the charity. We also actively encourage and celebrate individual boys’ fundraising initiatives through assemblies.
At the start of the academic year, all boys are given the opportunity to nominate a charity for the School to support over the course of a term. They are required to give a short presentation to the School Council, detailing the reasons
School Council
Every September, a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson are elected from Year 6. These two boys are joined by two representatives from each class (from Year 1 upwards) who are elected termly.
Each term, the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson meet with Mrs Johnston to discuss the issues of the School, discuss any actions taken and receive her valuable feedback.
The School Council meet weekly to discuss the views of the class, concerns and suggestions.
The members of the School Council help with many charity events, through both the organisation and the running of the actual events. 43

Information
Holiday Gymnastics Club
During the holiday periods, the gymnastics coaching staff run a Gymnastics Club. The sessions are divided into two age groups: KS1 and KS2, which will cater for all ages and abilities. We will work on the basics of movement and balance in KS1 and then move on to more advanced jumps, rolls and sequences in KS2. We will also introduce some pair and group work for both age groups, as well as some fun gymnastic-based games as part of the warm-up and cool-down. For more information, please contact Mr Buckingham via email at adam.buckingham@surbitonhigh.com.
How do I enrol my son in a club? In the first few days of the Autumn Term, you will receive this Co-curricular booklet via MIS outlining information about the clubs we are offering. All bookings for clubs are taken via an online booking system, SOCS, using the online details that you will be sent as part of your Friday communications for the Autumn Term, together with details of any costs involved. Following this, you will be able to log on to confirm details of the clubs for your son. For the Spring and Summer Terms, we will send registration information soon after each half term to register for the following term. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Toby Blood via email at prepclubs@surbitonhigh.com 46
Breakfast and After School Club The clubs take place in the Dining Hall of the Surbiton Assembly Rooms and are supervised by qualified staff with a ratio of one staff member to eight pupils. The clubs take place each day during term time and provide a safe, happy environment for your child. The Breakfast Club is available to all pupils from 7.30am until the start of your child’s school day. A nutritious breakfast is available until 8.15am. This includes a choice of porridge, cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit juice. Pupils are escorted to their School for the start of their school day. The After School Club is available from the end of your child’s school day until 6.00pm. A healthy snack is offered, including freshly made sandwiches, fruit and vegetables
and a hot option of beans on toast. There is a homework and study area and, at the end of the afternoon, staffsupervised films and educational games. Both clubs offer a variety of activities such as art and craft, construction kits, role play, board games and sport. If you are interested in using the clubs, please contact our Breakfast and After School Club Manager, Ms Marrison, via email at afterschoolclub@surbitonhigh.com.
