The Nursery and Kindergarten at Manor House School, marks the start of your child’s educational journey. Life in our Nursery is a learning journey with exploration and carefully planned activities. Your child’s happiness and security is extremely important to us and we aim to ensure your child has the best possible start to their education.
The Early Years Foundation Stage at Manor House School includes Nursery and Kindergarten for children age 2 to 4 years. The Nursery and Kindergarten is co-educational and the children are given the opportunity to experience a gentle, nurturing introduction into school life, whilst enjoying being part of a vibrant and challenging whole school community.
The children experience a dynamic and happy atmosphere and have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities.
Children in the Nursery and Kindergarten are able to learn and take advantage of the fabulous School grounds
whenever possible. We place great importance on outdoor learning and offer Forest School sessions to the Kindergarten children.
They have excellent role models in the older pupils from the School, who visit us on a regular basis as part of their Duke of Edinburgh training. This ‘big sister’ approach adds another dimension to the children’s learning and sense of belonging to the whole school community.
There is an expectation that children will transition from the Nursery and Kindergarten to our co-educational Reception Class.
Our Early Years Department (excluding Reception) consists of Nursery (2-3 years) and Kindergarten (3 years + by 31 August). We are open in term-time from 8.00 am until 6.00 pm. Holiday Club sessions are available during the School holidays when booked in advance giving 46 week child care.
The day starts between 8.00 am and 9.00 pm, with breakfast available. During the morning the children enjoy engaging in stimulating outdoor activities such as Forest School. We always stop for a mid-morning snack and the session finishes with a story, singing and the sharing of ideas before having a cooked lunch in the School dining room.
After lunch, as well as continuing with outdoor and indoor play, there are adult-led activities with specialist
teaching staff. These include Music, French, Yoga and PE. Alongside the specialist sessions, we support the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum of Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and art and design. Our aim is to provide the children with a well-balanced day to develop their learning in order for them to achieve their full potential.
The session finishes at 3:30 pm. Our full day ends at 6pm with a light tea served at 4:30 pm.
Our Nursery and Kindergarten school is located in a dedicated and purpose-built area of the school. Parents can personally drop their children at the classroom door, giving them daily contact with their child’s key person.
The Manor House School classes are housed in Oak Barn classrooms which are connected to a new re-furbished all-weather outside classroom, which can be accessed from each classroom. We place great importance on the children’s outdoor learning, and this allows staff to offer child and adult-led learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. They also share the Orchard Garden with the
children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. This includes a large pirate ship, playhouse, mud kitchen and sandpit. This lovely outside area provides the children with a stimulating environment for playing and developing their learning. Playing with the older children helps boost their confidence, creativity, imagination, independent learning and teamwork.
‘Forest School is a inspirational process, that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland or natural environment with trees.’
Forest School England Definition
The Kindergarten have weekly Forest School lessons which take place in our beautiful 17-acre grounds and outdoor classroom, The Dell. The beautiful landscape and woodland environment add to the experience of learning. The children are encouraged to respect the natural environment and take care of it. Forest School is child led and the children are free
to explore their interests and play. It uses natural resources to stimulate imagination, creativity and investigation. Each session includes the option to partake in a nature craft or practical hands on activity which aims to build up their skills, abilities and confidence week by week.
We believe that communication with parents is an integral part of the development of their child. We have several methods in which we communicate with parents: -
• Daily face to face contact
• A weekly Newsletter
A Communication Board
• Tapestry – online learning journal
• Twice yearly parent evenings
• Full progress report for 2-year-olds End of year school reports.
Developing the children’s confidence is a high priority at Manor House School.
The children are always extremely proud to be given the opportunity to perform for their parents in a variety of events such as; The Christmas Nativity play, Mother’s Day afternoon tea, Father’s Day breakfast, Sports Day and the end of year School Prize Giving. During this event each child receives a certificate to celebrate their achievements.
The children are given the opportunity to gain stickers and stars to reward effort and achievement. These transfer into house points which go towards their School House ensuring the children feel part of the main school community.
Manor House School is part of The Effingham Schools Trust as a dynamic educational triumvirate. This partnership with St Teresa’s and Cranmore enables Manor House School to continue to focus on its strengths, in supporting and educating children from Nursery to Year 11, whilst retaining its individuality, yet providing access to a rich variety of events, facilities, and resources.
EST’s diamond model offers a co-educational Toddler Group (from 18 months), award-winning co-educational Nursery and Kindergarten (age 2-4) and co-educational Lower Prep (Reception to Year 2) at Manor House School. This is followed by the benefits of the single sex classroom in Upper Prep (either at Manor House School for girls or Cranmore for Boys) and for the secondary years (at Manor House School, St Teresa’s and Cranmore).
The Trust also offers a co-educational learning environment at The Sixth Form, for pupils within the Trust or as a fantastic
choice for pupils from outside the Trust.
This model reflects and acknowledges that girls and boys approach their learning in different ways at different developmental stages.
The three schools are conveniently located just a few miles apart, each with its own stunning site in the heart of Surrey.
EST’s excellent transport services will be further developed to fully accommodate the needs of parents and pupils at Manor House School.
