MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER
In Clongowes, we have a strong sense of our own identity, rooted as it is in our Jesuit approach to education. It is characterised by our holistic, all-round focus, which has shaped schooling from the time of St Ignatius and continues to shape a Clongowes education today. Ignatius believed that education was for “improvement in living and learning, for the greater glory of God and the common good”, enabling students to flourish as human beings, and encouraging them to search for the best in each individual - for their own personal benefit and for the benefit of others. This is as relevant in 2023 as it was all those years ago.
The very best learning, whilst incorporating high examination grades and Leaving Certificate points, is something much more intellectually challenging: it is about developing a real openness to, and curiosity for, learning. Our living and our learning, however, is about so much more than that. As a member of our boarding school community, boys are charged with playing their part to the full in the day-to-day life of the College. If you ask any of the boys what is the best thing about school, they are likely to say, “being with friends.” And these friendships endure once they leave here. Much of a Clongowes’ education comes from taking part in our broad and varied ethos, sports and co-curricular programmes which help to develop those qualities of character essential to a fulfilling life: integrity, judgment, tolerance, resilience, sensitivity, the capacity to work as part of a team, to think for oneself and of other people, developing self-awareness and confidence.
Clongowes’ boys can look around and know that their contributions in the classroom, dormitory, on the sports field, in our broad ethos programme, in our music-making and so on are greatly valued. I hope that the pages of Clongowes Life 2023 bring some colour and substance to another very fruitful year in the life of the College. There is so much for all of us to cherish and be grateful for.
Chris Lumb Headmaster June 2023The Pages of Clongowes Life are filled with images that capture the vibrant life of our school and the achievements of our students. The publication would not be possible without the support of staff who take the time to capture the many moments that celebrate life in Clongowes. Our thanks to all staff who have contributed to this year’s magazine:

NEW HOUSE LEADERS FOR 2023 / 24

There are ten Houses in Clongowes, all named after notable Jesuits. Boys from each Year Group make up the Houses. Houses compete in events like Sports Day and have social events together. It is a great way to get to know boys from different Year Groups!

GREEN SCHOOLS
This year, our Green Schools Committee made significant strides in promoting water conservation and raising awareness about the importance of saving water.
Through a series of engaging initiatives, we have encouraged responsible water usage among our students and staff. Our school implemented practical measures such as installing drinking water fountains and passive infra red (timed showers), checking and repairing leaks regularly. Additionally, we organised quiz nights, movie nights and presentations on water conservation, highlighting the significance of reducing water waste both at school and in our daily lives. These efforts yielded remarkable results, with reduced overall water consumption. Our commitment to water conservation was recognized by The Kildare Co. Council and An Taisce, when we were awarded our Water flag in May 2023. Through these achievements, our school continues to serve as a model for water conservation, inspiring others to make a positive impact on our planet’s water sustainability.

LESOTHO IMMERSION EXPERIENCE
In late March, a group of staff and students travelled to Lesotho as part of our African Immersion Experience.
“We departed on Monday the 27th of March and when we arrived after our long travels we were ecstatic. We arrived at the lodge in Malealea at night. Upon waking up we were astonished by the beautiful scenery that Lesotho had to offer.
We started with our roadside work on the 29th of March digging trenches for water runoff and filling in potholes. After we returned to the lodge we were greeted by the local choir and band who played their wonderful music for us to enjoy. In the following days we continued with our road maintenance and undertook a number of water projects providing water to a nearby school of 99 students and to the local village. Alongside this we worked with the school planting trees and working on fencing. After this we had our soccer match against the local team which was a thrilling game and resulted in a win for us! After Mass on the Sunday morning we headed off with our local families and spent the day with them. I spent the day working on the farm dosing sheep and doing a stock count. After this eye opening experience of seeing their daily lives we continued to work on road maintenance and poured concrete and finished what we had aimed to do and more. ”

The Junior Rugby team, led by Captain Michael O’Sullivan and Vice Captains Charlie Hussey and Tom Walsh, had a challenging but ultimately positive season. The team played a total of 17 games, winning six and losing 11. Despite the seemingly low win ratio, the team demonstrated significant player development and growth throughout the season.
Heading into the Cup campaign, the team’s performance looked promising, having won a tight game at home against Kilkenny College. However, they were knocked out in the first round of the Leinster Schools Cup by Cistercian College Roscrea. Nevertheless, the team remained determined and went on to make the semi-final of the Junior Plate competition, where they unfortunately lost to Kilkenny College by just 2 points in a closely contested match.
Despite some narrow losses, including those against Campbell College and Methodist College Belfast, the team never gave up and continued to work hard throughout the season. The lessons learned from these losses proved invaluable in highlighting areas for improvement and motivating the team to work harder in future matches. The first-round Cup defeat was a fantastic account of the team’s spirit and determination.
Throughout the season, the Junior Panel 2 coaching team consisting of Mr. Carlos and Mr. Gray provided invaluable support to the team, contributing significantly to the team’s development and success.
Mr Dawson, Backs Coach, Junior Rugby
SENIOR RUGBY
The pre cup season was very successful with 9 victories and three defeats recorded. Alex Kelly was selected by the players and management as captain, providing cool and calm leadership, consistently demonstrated through his actions.
During the Mid-Term break, the Panel embarked on a tour to Cambrils Park Sports Village, south of Barcelona. This provided a period of intense warm weather training and helped to unite the entire panel. Highlights of the pre-cup games included a fantastic double victory away to Blackrock College. This memorable day in December demonstrated the ability and resolve that existed within the group.
The Cup campaign proved to be dramatic and entertaining with Clongowes playing a fast, attacking brand of rugby.
The opening cup game saw Clongowes come out on top after a pulsating encounter with Terenure College. Both teams showed great intent to play and Terenure opened the scoring. Clongowes responded with a powerful try with Dan Daly running a lovely line to dot down under the sticks. Clongowes were then awarded a penalty try after great work by Max Duggan offloading to Alex Kelly who was illegally prevented from scoring. The referee awarded a penalty try.
Terenure responded with a penalty and a try to lead 15-14 at half time. The second half proved to be a tight and tense affair with Clongowes pressure earning them a penalty. Harry Mallon converted and Clongowes defence withstood everything Terenure had to earn a deserved 17-15 victory in a thrilling encounter.
The game had to be replayed, due to an administration error. This was a true test of the character and resolve of the playing and management group. A Daniel Baugh try in the fourth minute, converted by Harry Mallon saw us get off to a flying start. Blayze Molloy dotted down, after great teamwork in the 13th minute, to double the lead. Mallon added a penalty on the stroke of half time to give us a 17-0 lead. Terenure produced a fantastic 2nd half comeback to go 19-17 ahead, but the Clongowes DNA was evident when Tom Murtagh kicked the winning points to leave Clongowes celebrating another great victory over Terenure. Final score 20-19.
The quarter final draw saw Clongowes paired with St Michaels. Once again the Clongowes attacking flair was on show. Clongowes illustrated a great skill set, making multiple line breaks in an enthralling first half. Unfortunately we could not translate these incisions into points as St Michaels scramble defence did just enough to hold us scoreless in the first half. St Michaels led 8-0 going in at half time. Hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow when St Michaels scored just after half time. St Michaels added to their account in the 43rd minute. Lesser teams would have folded in similar circumstances but this Clongowes team illustrated its resolve. Daniel Baugh, James Wyse and Conor Lysaght all added tries but St Michaels held on for a deserved victory. Final score 27-17.
Despite the disappointment, the team can be proud to have represented everything good that one associates with Cup teams in Clongowes Wood College.

THE ALBERTO HURTADO BURSARY PROGRAMME (AHP) AT CLONGOWES
The Alberto Hurtado Bursary Programme (AHP) which commenced in 2007, aims to provide up to seven bursary places each academic year to boys who may not otherwise fulfil their potential because of socio-economic disadvantage. Inspired by the desire to remove barriers to the unique educational experience that a seven-day boarding school can offer, the AHP has become an integral part of the fabric of Clongowes life with thirty-eight boys currently attending the College and sixty-six who have graduated as old Clongownians.
‘In Clongowes I was surrounded by motivated people and people who always had the right intention. Once you are surrounded by people like this it makes you thrive in all aspects of education, sport, music, and life in general.’
AHP Student
The Clongowes Foundation is committed to the funding of the AHP with the long-term objective to make the AHP self-financing. The Alberto Hurtado Endowment Fund was created in 2020 with this aim and will have no draw down on funds until 2025/26. Further contributions and legacies will be crucial, and this remains a key focus for the Foundation. Current funding for the AHP and further contributions to the AHEF are reliant on the generosity of past pupils and parents who recognise the impact these contributions make to fulfilling the promise of the AHP.
For further information on the impact of the AHP please check out the Clongowes Foundation section on the Clongowes website.
FOUNDATION TEAM
The Foundation team greatly appreciates the support of all our donors. The generosity of current and past parents, past pupils as well as the Jesuit Community, Province and friends of the College has led to a significant enhancement of the school’s infrastructure in recent times along with widening access to a Clongowes education through the development of the Alberto Hurtado Bursary Programme.
The Foundation team – Joe Rooney, Chair of Fundraising (OC’79 and past parent) Antoinette Kelly, Director of Development and Emma Robinson as Development Officer, work closely with our donor base with the desire to maintain the historic success of the Clongowes Foundation and to connect our audience with future plans for the College. The Foundation is supported by Denise Nichol, Director of Finance and Administration and Clare Daly, Finance.
If you would like any information about Clongowes Foundation or wish to support the Bursary Programme or Capital developments, please contact the Foundation Office 045 902334 / antoinettekelly@clongowes.net

INFIRMARY REFURBISHMENT
In December, Clongowes Foundation hosted a plaque unveiling to honour Richard Robinson OC’38 and his legacy gift to Clongowes. Richard’s legacy helped fund the refurbishment of the Infirmary (originally built in 1872) and support the Alberto Hurtado Endowment Fund thereby ensuring that his benevolence will positively impact on the lives of future generations of Clongowes’ students.
We were honoured on the day to be
joined by Margaret Horne, second cousin of Richard who shared her memories of Richard and expressed how delighted he would have been for his legacy to support students in the College into the future.
Joe Rooney (Chair of Fundraising) in his dedication of the plaque spoke of the positive impact of the Alberto Hurtado Programme and how one of the early Alberto Hurtado Bursary graduates, Seán McMahon (OC’16), entered the Jesuit
novitiate in Innsbruck in September.
Fr Rector Michael Sheil blessed the Plaque and remembered Richard along with all who have contributed so generously to Clongowes as it continues to evolve and hold its special place at the forefront of Irish education. After the unveiling Fr Sheil celebrated the annual Mass of Thanksgiving for Benefactors and Donors where all donors were remembered.
“RICHARD’S LEGACY HELPED FUND THE REFURBISHMENT OF THE INFIRMARY (ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1872) AND SUPPORT THE ALBERTO HURTADO ENDOWMENT FUND THEREBY ENSURING THAT HIS BENEVOLENCE WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF FUTURE GENERATIONS OF CLONGOWES’ STUDENTS.”
