Clongowes 1816-1817 James Lynch James Lynch (1807-96), bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, a founder of the Vincentian Congregation in Ireland and of Castleknock College, was a native of Dublin who attended Clongowes in 1816-17. He attended the College of Surgeons, before switching to study for the priesthood at Maynooth. He was ordained in 1833. By then he had joined a small group of priests who introduced the Vincentian Congregation to Ireland. He served as a professor and vice-president of their new school, Castleknock College, Dublin for many years. In 1866 he was appointed coadjutor vicar apostolic of the Western district in Scotland and titular bishop of Arcadiopolis. In 1869 he became coadjutor to the ailing bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, succeeding as bishop only in 1888.
