CHOIR AND VOCAL GROUPS There is an exciting plethora of choirs and vocal groups on offer all year round at Manor House. In the Prep School, Prep Choir is an activity open to all in Year 3 to 6 and held at lunchtime in the Music Room. Pupils learn a range of pieces and perform at the Remembrance Service, Sight for Surrey Carol Service, School Carol Service, Easter Service and MHS Proms. The wide variety of songs often incorporate choreography and British Sign Language, and pupils are encouraged to take a lead role in devising these, particularly for concerts and events. The Choir is un-auditioned but is a yearly commitment. The Prep Vocal Group is open to pupils in the Prep School who have singing tuition, and is selective, by invitation from the Director of Music. This group specialises in part singing (SSA) harmonies and performs at the Carol Service, Easter Service and MHS Proms. Senior Choir is held at lunchtime in the Music

The choir takes place at short break in Arcot every Wednesday and welcomes participants of all backgrounds and experiences. The Parent Choir is similarly an opportunity for parents to come together on Friday mornings before school to sing together and perform at special school events such as the Carol Service and MHS Proms.

CREATIVE IMEDIA Creative iMedia is an introduction to the media world. The girls learn about planning and creating Digital Graphics using Photoshop, creating Digital Video and Interactive Multimedia products. The planning stage includes analysing client briefs, considering target audiences as well as creating mood boards, workplans and visualisation diagrams. This Club is a drop-in session for Creative iMedia students (Years 10 and 11) to give them an opportunity to complete their set assignments, catch-up on work missed or to revise for the written examinations.

DEBATE CLUB Debate Club is primarily for Years 7 to 10. We write and perform debates in the Rotary Club style, with a Proposer, an Opposer and a chair. We take part in the Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ national competition every year. We also have a Manor House School inter-house debate competition at the end of the Summer Term.

ECO CLUB Eco Club is currently available for students in Years 3 to 6. It involves learning about the environment and taking action to support nature and wildlife. We will discuss and plan how to improve our School, home and community to minimise our environmental impact and help nature to flourish. We will also get creative using natural materials as well as upcycling and preventing waste from going to landfill. In the summer months we plan to spend more time outside exploring our school grounds and appreciating its natural beauty.

IRISH DANCING In Irish Dancing Club the Prep girls have been looking at a mixture of solo Irish dances along with some céilí dances. Mr O’Neill, the Head of Mathematics, runs the club and brings a wealth of experience with him. He has danced competitively in both Solo and Team competitions growing up in Ireland, has performed on tour with Irish group Clasać throughout Europe in his youth, and up until recently has danced with the Griffin Lynch school of Irish dance based in Leatherhead. Outside of teaching he is finalising his last CLRG Grade Exams and aims to one day open an Irish Dance School of his own.

LAMDA - (LONDON ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND DRAMATIC ART) LESSONS Years 1 to 11 are offered LAMDA in the form of acting, Speaking Verse & Prose and Using Spoken English (Speaking in Public). Girls can choose from these pathways which ultimately lead to examinations in: Acting: This pathway gives girls the opportunity to explore and perform a range of classical and contemporary texts whilst developing confidence and performance technique. Speaking Verse & Prose: This pathway is the entry point for Speech and Drama lessons and is the recommended route for those new to performing and speaking in public. It is designed to nurture an appreciation for poetry and literature and develop confidence and speaking skills.

Using Spoken English/Public Speaking: This pathway allows girls to explore a range of topics an develop their public speaking and presentation skills. The course aims to give girls an understanding of the power of the spoken work and develop skills in effective communication.

LANGUAGE CLUBS The Modern Foreign Languages Department offers the Senior School weekly lunchtime Grammar clinics in French, Spanish and German. Girls may use the fully equipped Language Laboratory to access language programmes and software. Pupils receive one to one support from an MFL teacher who can help with grammatical and linguistic topics or homework. In addition, we run a relaxed termly Film Club for different year groups where girls can sit back and relax with bowls of popcorn to watch their favourite film or musical in French, Spanish or German with English subtitles.

10 | Co C UR R IC UL AR OP PORTU N ITIE S

LEADERSHIP SKILLS The programme is a Level 2 qualification aimed at developing students as Future Leaders. They complete a 10-week programme which includes a range of activities including public speaking, presentation planning, body language analysis, vocal coaching, and evaluation work. Over the programme they will present to a range of different audiences on a variety of topics. At times this will take them out of their comfort zone but will aim to develop transferrable skills that they can apply to their school or work life in the future.

The final task is a presentation to a younger year group on a Science topic of their choice. They will plan the lesson, devise a range of engaging practical’s and lead the session in pairs. Last year all 25 pupils who took part completed the course successfully and were accredited. All Senior pupils are welcome to apply.

LEXIA CLUB This co-curricular activity is run all year round for Reception and Years 1 to Year 6. It is a fun, computer-based, interactive, personalised learning programme which helps to develop fundamental reading, spelling, and writing skills. Girls move up through the levels at their own pace, as they become secure in each area of learning. The programme supports and consolidates phonics, spelling rules and patterns, within the Primary English curriculum. We encourage a ‘little and often’ approach, and the girls can log on from home too.

MERAKI MAGAZINE Language Mentors and devotees to MFL produce a Termly edition of the MFL magazine, Meraki. They devise and edit the content and images as a group to produce their own publication. This requires teamwork and collaboration as well as an obvious love of languages!

MUD CLUB

Mud Club is a Club for all seasons! From the seedlings of spring to the blooms of summer we had a wonderful Summer Term. We focussed on items to sell to help raised money for the Calabash Charity this year and the team did a fantastic job. We had

over 40 Cucumber lemons and 8 different varieties of Courgette. Tomatoes were also in abundance and the girls set up a sale to parents as they left the Prep School Production. We are still in action though and managing to propagate in the Winter months thanks to our fantastic Hydroponics system in the Biology lab. We started with lettuces but have now progressed to a range of herbs which are germinating nicely. Our short-term aim is to feed the Guinea Pigs however long term we may produce enough to sell. We also have a long-term plan afoot with our Gardener Stefan to design a Vegetable planting area to improve the School’s sustainability.

MUSIC AND DRAMA Creativity and Collaboration are values to be found in the Music and Drama Departments particularly when it is time for the annual ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ Productions. Budding musicians have the opportunity to audition for the Production Band or Orchestra based upon ability and the instruments needed in the published arrangement. The Senior Production is staged in the Spring Term with evening performances over three consecutive days. The Junior Production is in the Summer Term for one day, performing in the afternoon and evening. Girls may audition for major roles although there is the opportunity of working backstage or with our excellent sound and lighting facilities. In addition there are Prep and Senior Bands hosted by invitation only by our Director of Music. The Senior Drama Club meets on a Tuesday after school and performs various Drama evenings throughout the year. Drama at Manor House School is seen as a valuable tool for increasing self-confidence and communication skills, as well as enabling girls to enjoy the sheer thrill and professionalism of being involved in one of our major school productions or Drama evenings.

SCIENCE CLUB In Science we like to start young so run a weekly KS1 Science Club in the Garden Block. This is linked to the Curriculum for that term so that they students can link practical work to the theory they have learnt. Our Year 6 Science Ambassadors also work with staff to deliver this club which is loved by all. KS2 have two Clubs available to cover all year groups. They complete the British Science Association’s Crest Awards by completing a range of investigations across the year. They love visiting the senior labs and working with the specialist equipment and Senior teachers. Once in Seniors the girls have the opportunity to join Teentech, STEM Club, Journal Club or Advanced Physics. These each serve a different purpose for example design and innovation, practical investigation or challenging themselves through research papers. We had a healthy uptake in each club and the engagement of all certainly leading into a love of learning in the classroom too.

SEWING CLUB

SCIENCE CREST AWARDS CLUB Each year, over 30,000 CREST Awards are undertaken by 5-to-19-year-olds, giving them opportunities to explore real-world Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths projects in an exciting way. CREST is a UK award scheme that recognises success, and enables students to build their skills and demonstrate personal achievement in project work. A great way to gather UCAS points too!

The girls learn and practise a range of stitches, both practical and decorative, using a mix of threads, on a variety of materials. For girls in Years 4, 5 and 6, enthusiasm is all that is needed! The girls make samplers, small toys, felt brooches and felt bracelets and better still, get to take them home.
