Achieving Individual Excellence

SPRING ISSUE

Welcome to the Spring Issue Pupils discuss politics with the Speaker of the House of Commons As the developing capability of mobile technology continues to add value to our lives in many ways, for instance in our ability to connect with each other and access information, it is clear that the benefit of having it close to hand is going to continue to grow. However, despite the remarkable power of these devices, within the educational world we continue to entertain serious misgivings in relation to some aspects of their use.

I was reading recently of a fellow headmaster of a secondary school in the south of England who took the decision to introduce a ban on mobile phones carried by the pupils. Despite much uproar and pupil condemnation at first, the school quickly settled down to the new regulation and got on with it – to much reported success. We should not really be surprised by this. At Highclare School we would agree with the apparently draconian step of barring their use. In the Senior School we do not allow the pupils to have their mobile phones with them in the daytime, and have not done so for many years. The pupils must check them in / out with their form tutors at the beginning / end of each working day. We have a slightly different system for the 6th form but pupils in Year 7 to Year 11 must comply with this – no exception. In our two junior, infant and EYFS settings, mobile phones are simply not permitted in the normal course of events. It is not a controversial thing with us in the Senior School because of one universally recognised benefit: it allows us to get on with the task of educating the children, in the way we believe best, with minimal outside distraction. Educational psychologists would advise that the pupils, free from the stress of social media, are more able to concentrate on their studies. Anecdotally we would confirm that the pupils, relieved of the pressure of constantly having to ‘showcase’ their lives on line, fret much less about what might be posted or written by others or, indeed, themselves. Moreover, the children improve their ability to engage in social dialogue – a fundamental communication skill – as a result of spending more time having actual conversations and interacting, in real time, with their fellow classmates. I am sure, also, that they see more of the world that is going on all around them. I would be the first to recognise that there is a role for mobile technology as a teaching aid. The connectivity and access that it facilitates continue to grow in importance and to evolve at an almost unbelievable rate. We use it in school to both support the teaching and learning experience and to help prepare our pupils to successfully take their place in an increasingly digital world. On a daily basis, though, the School continues to be a mobile-free zone. Best wishes Dr R Luker - Headmaster

Exciting News Look out for our new app, being launched in the summer term

A group of Highclare School U5 and L6 students, together with Head of Law, Mrs Embury, travelled to London to take part in the Erdington Youth Parliament event courtesy of Jack Dromey MP. During the day, our young people were engaged in various discussion groups which focused on such pertinent issues as youth unemployment, homelessness and the effects of Brexit on young people in particular. Our young people threw themselves into the experience and contributed well to the group discussions. As a result of the Brexit discussion and a request to understand more about what it entails for young people, Jack Dromey has promised to visit local schools in the near future to deliver a talk on the subject. He confirmed that he is very anxious that all young people are as well-informed as possible about a future outside the EU. Students also spent over an hour in the company of The Right Honourable John Bercow MP, the Speaker of the House of Commons, whom they found to be very informative and engaging. The group reported that they thoroughly enjoyed their day and are extremely grateful to have been part of this wonderful experience.

Senior & Sixth Form News Malakai performs in a Birmingham Royal Ballet production U3 pupil Malakai Florey-Meah took part in Cinderella Dreams, a performance project for ballet students in conjunction with Birmingham Royal Ballet, at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Malakai started dancing because he liked the way you can express your moods and feelings, no matter what they are. He said that he had been inspired by his PE teacher, Mr Jones, never to give up. Malakai also enjoys playing football which he says helps to keep him fit.

Senior School pupils granted an audience with royalty

2 L4 pupils were recently granted an exclusive interview with ‘Queen Elizabeth I’ at the royal castle of Tutbury. They were treated to a series of interesting facts and stories about her life and times and were able to handle artefacts from the Tudor period, including a real execution sword! They were also able to learn about the history of the castle before being allowed to thoroughly explore the castle grounds for themselves.

Charlotte is a Medal Winner

By Royal Appointment L5 pupil Abbie Phelps has shown that she deserves an Order of Merit, by producing an outstanding portrait painting as part of an ongoing personal project in addition to her studies in school. Abbie, who studies GCSE Art, explains, "Living in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield and my passion for both History and Art inspired me to paint this comedy-style portrait. I combined the classic, regal style of Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII with the face of my dad to create a humorous family portrait as well as a contrast between the traditional and the modern. Please note my Dad only has one wife!" Abbie has explained that she intends this initial portrait to be the first of a series. We suspect there may be at least 6 more! Well done Abbie.

Rotary, Youth Speaks Competition Our two Senior School teams enjoyed great success in the recent Youth Speaks competition, organised by the Rotary Club of Wylde Green held in the lovely venue of Pype Hayes Golf Club. Two teams, each comprising 3 pupils, spoke for around 10 minutes on their chosen subject and then answered questions from the audience. Highclare B team, Annabella Kalavanas, Jessica Bonner and Laith Baldwin, spoke assertively on the idea that the school curriculum should allow pupils more time for specialist subjects and concentrate less on core subjects. Their speech, entitled Can a fish climb a tree? provoked further discussion and was very well presented. The Highclare A team, Elis Jackson, Samuel Donaghue and Shiven Pattni, had to prove themselves on the back of their success last year. This time they asked the question Is the supernatural just another superstition? Their lively and dramatic presentation gave them a slight edge, resulting in them winning the overall prize.

Congratulations to L5 pupil Charlotte O’Neill who competed in the World Martial Arts Organisation event where she was placed 3rd and awarded a bronze medal. This means that Charlotte will represent her country later this year. Great news and congratulations Charlotte.

In total 5 teams from schools around Sutton competed in a constructive and convivial atmosphere, with just enough degree of competition to make it entertaining. A very receptive audience of Rotarians, parents and friends enjoyed a fascinating evening, showcasing some of the thoughts and confident presentations of our very talented young people.

Music trip to Symphony Hall The GCSE Music students from L5 and U5 journeyed to Symphony Hall to watch the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra perform Savitri (a chamber opera) and The Planets by Gustav Holst. The concert also featured the CBSO Youth Chorus in which both Marika Fraser–Ryan and Emily Semmens sing. It was a fantastic opportunity to watch a great concert in a world-class concert venue. Girish Sanghera - “It was brilliant music and I would definitely attend another event like this.”

U5 Careers trip to the NEC U5 pupils visited the What Career Live? What University Live? Exhibition at the NEC this term.

Elis Jackson commented, “Nice music and thank you to Miss Mosley for organising such a great event.”

GCSE Science Live Twenty students from L5 attended GCSE Science Live at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. They were treated to a day of interesting lectures from some eminent scientists on a range of science topics. Professor Mark Miodownik spoke about materials and the importance of reducing waste and being able to recycle objects such as mobile phones. Professor Alice Roberts (presenter of TV series such as Coast, Ice Age Giants and The Incredible Human Journey) explained how evolution could be better understood by studying the skeletons of animals. As ever, Professor Andrea Sella gave a very engaging lecture on the amazing properties of ice, which included a very loud explosion! Dr Maggie Aderin Pocock (presenter of The Sky at Night) explained why she wants to travel to Mars and how it may soon be possible to do so. To finish off the day, Professor Jim Al-Khalili (presenter of many scientific programmes on the BBC) discussed worm holes and the possibilities of time travel. The day presented many ideas which generated lots of questions.

Digital Research helps Geographers

Students were able to go to various stands and talks where they were given information on universities and possible future fields of work. Many universities were represented at the event, each supplying information on university life and the courses they offer. A variety of businesses such as Lloyds Pharmacy, BT, Microsoft, JCB and Deloitte were also there to talk about different paths into their lines of work. Talks took place throughout the afternoon; I attended a talk on how to choose the right career path. This was enjoyable and informative. Other students took part in a STEM challenge where they had to build the tallest structure possible out of paper, using only triangular shapes which could withstand a 2kg weight. I believe that the afternoon has helped me understand the choice of paths I can take when thinking about my future career options. Daniel Hurst

World Book Day

Pupils in Senior School have been using iPads in some of their lessons. U4 Geographers recently used them as part of their investigations into population change. Pupils were able to use live population clocks to calculate the rates of natural increase in different parts of the world. Once they had worked out patterns of change, they were able to suggest reasons for the differences observed and to research the reasons for these.

Promoting reading for pleasure was the message given to pupils during our annual book sale in the Learning Centre on World Book Day. Thank you to pupils who donated books from home and to our librarians who were on hand to sell them and mark our book quiz entries. Proceeds go to African Space Trust and the purchase of a few new titles for our library.

Junior School News Life Skills and British Values Week During the first week of March, Highclare Junior Schools enjoyed a week of fun and informative workshops aimed at teaching the pupils useful life skills and British values. A timetable of sessions enabled the children to experience all the activities offered throughout the week. These included: • • • • • • • • • •

Dental hygiene Good manners and etiquette Safety in the home Budgeting Personal hygiene and handwashing First aid A Q&A session with a GP An afternoon walk to Sutton park from Highclare St Paul’s Real life maths using Smarties. A visit from a dietician

The week culminated with a Life Skills Quiz at Highclare Woodfield on the topics they had covered during the week.

Music for Youth Primary Prom 4

J3 and J4 pupils had the opportunity to go to Symphony Hall in Birmingham to see young people from all over the country aged 8 – 18 perform at the Music for Youth Primary Prom. The concert was absolutely fantastic, every performance was of an extremely high standard and the children were mesmerised throughout. We heard a range of genres of music such as Japanese drumming, Big Band, West End and folk music. The radio 3 presenter Tom Redmond, who was comparing the concert, even made the whole audience participate in a rhythmic composition that filled the hall and the energy was electric. The children really enjoyed that. I hope that the concert will have inspired our musicians at Highclare School.

Ancient Rome J4 pupils at Highclare Woodfield gave a fascinating presentation in assembly about the Romans. They dressed in Roman costume, some with their hand-made shields, to explain what life was like in Roman times for the centurions and also the ordinary people of Rome.

3-D Shapes In Maths this term J3 have been looking at the features of 3-D shapes and describing properties. As part of that topic, the children had to make their own models of 3-D shapes using art straws.

Bones Don’t Lie The children in J5 took part in a History outreach workshop which was led by Jonathan Davies. During this workshop, the children discovered the Saxon world through what they left behind in their graves. They studied photographs of graves and

discussed what the remains of the humans and their possessions could mean. The children also made fabulous models of Anglo-Saxon buildings.

Making Musical Instruments in Design Technology J5 pupils at Highclare Woodfield have enjoyed their Design Technology topic where they researched, designed, planned and made their own musical instruments. Some wonderful and inventive instruments were created, resulting in some very original sounds!

Pupils solve the crime J6 pupils at Highclare St Paul’s enjoyed a murder mystery party in preparation for a creative mystery writing project. Characters including Jules Bond, Professor J J McNut, Jerry Moneybags and Lucrecia Diva who helped set the scene as pupils asked questions to investigate the crime. J6 pupils at Highclare Woodfield were also perplexed and baffled when confronted by a gruesome crime scene in their cloakroom! Who had been killed? Why? How? And was Miss Arnold as innocent as she claimed? Although they have yet to solve this mystery, J6 used it to inspire their own dramatic murder mystery openings.

Safer Internet Week Highclare Junior School pupils were introduced to Safer Internet Week with thoughtprovoking assemblies about online images and videos. In lessons, children explored the issues surrounding how photos are shared online and learned that they can potentially stay there forever, reaching a wider audience than they were intended for. They thought

about how photos create an impression of their character and used this to help them decide if an image is okay to share online or not. Children designed informative posters sharing some important e-safety tips and met Hector the dolphin for the first time, an animated dolphin who helps them to stay safe if they encounter any problems online at school.

J6 pupil begins fencing Congratulations to William Hardcastle in J6 who has taken up a new sport, fencing. In a recent competition he did well, finishing 3rd in his poule, but was knocked out by his teammate in the 2nd knockout round. William really enjoyed competing and has decided to continue with lessons.

The Amazing Adventures of SuperStan Highclare St Paul’s performed The Amazing Adventures of SuperStan in February. J6 led the production with the main parts and brought much comedy to the performance. The story is one of a clumsy boy, played by Alexandra Schulz, who transforms into a superhero named SuperStan, portrayed by Bethany Roberts. The villain of the performance, played by Imaan Puri, is the evil Candy King whose plan it is to take over the world. However the show would not have been the same without Gran (portrayed by Isabella Taylor), the comedy duo (played by Ronav Jain and Hannah Batey), the backstage crew and everyone else too.

Infants Science in Reception In science, the children in reception have been learning about freezing and melting. They carried out an experiment to see what happens to water in 4 different places – the freezer, the fridge, outside and inside. The children collected the boxes of water and looked at what had

happened and talked about why. It was great fun. When nature gave a helping hand, they seized the moment and changed the indoor maths lesson to an outdoor maths lesson and compared sizes of snowmen and snowballs.

Treasure Island As part of their Science topic, ‘Treasure Island’, J1R have been thinking about what would be needed for survival on a desert island. They agreed that food, water and shelter were the most important things, but the children thought of lots of other ideas, such as writing a message for help, starting a fire and making a raft. They recently enjoyed a very exciting afternoon in which they were tasked with designing and building a shelter. The main aim was to ensure that the shelter was strong and waterproof.

6

The children displayed fantastic teamwork in their pairs whilst making the shelter, and managed to overcome some very challenging difficulties such as how to get the shelter to stand upright. At the end of the afternoon they tested each shelter in turn to find out how waterproof and strong it was using a pipette of water to simulate rain and a hairdryer to simulate wind. Congratulations to Romilly Ball and Li Wan who built the most effective shelter overall.

J1 Polar Explorers As a conclusion to the ‘Polar Explorers’ topic, J1P collected all the ingredients necessary to make a warming bowl of minestrone soup. They read the recipe and collected everything from pasta and tomatoes to herbs, salt and pepper.

Next they opened packets of minestrone soup and tried to match the dried ingredients to the real food. We learned that freeze dried is the way explorers have to take their food with them on expeditions.

Tristan dressed up in many warm layers and tried to carry all of the ingredients needed just for this one meal…..it was impossible!

The Great Fire of London Children in J2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London in their History lessons. The Freshwater Theatre visited to give a fabulous workshop about the fire, which occurred in 1666. To end the topic, J2 re-enacted the fire in school by decorating boxes

in the style of the houses on Pudding Lane. Assisted by Mr Colin at Highclare St Paul’s and Mr Peter at Highclare Woodfield, J2 watched their houses burn and saw how the fire spread quickly along the row of houses that were built very close together. They thoroughly enjoyed this topic and having it brought to life by the re-enactment really helped to visualise how dreadful the fire must have been.

Pre-School News What the Ladybird Heard Children in Pre-School 2 at Highclare St Paul’s have been busy taking part in activities linked to the story What a Ladybird Heard following an exciting trip to Birmingham Town Hall to see a theatre production of the story. The children later produced an individual story map showing the route the two robbers took around the farm in search of the Fine Prize Cow. Finally, the children really enjoyed retelling the story through actions, songs and dance for their parents and grandparents in their class assembly.

A Visit from the Police The children had a visit from a Community Police Officer who came to talk about his role and to show them the inside of a police van. All the children enjoyed trying on his hat!

7

Kingsbury Water Park Pre-School 2 pupils ventured into the woods again to experience the winter activities. The Buzzy, Bumble and Honey Bees travelled on three consecutive days. Every morning was crisp and fresh. However, wearing their Highclare waterproof coats, wellington boots and highvisibility vests, they were prepared for all weathers. The children made mud pies, used trowels to dig for treasure, painted the bark of trees with mud-paint, searched for bugs, made homes for woodland animals and played on the equipment in the enclosed playground next to the lake. Fun was had by all and they cannot wait to visit Kingsbury again in the summer term to go pond-dipping.

Netball 8

Under 9 Netball against Hallfield School - Tuesday 24th January 2017 This was our first Netball match of the season and our first home game which caused great excitement amongst our players. We had the luxury of a long warm up to practise our skills and go over some tactics for the game. Our main focus this game was to improve our marking and, of course, to play the best we could. Captain Charlotte Batey took the coin toss and Hallfield won the first centre pass. Our players in position, we commenced. Playing against a strong opposition we struggled in the first half to maintain our markers. In the second half some excellent snatches were made by Rebecca Ng and Chloe Pike which saw us gain possession more often

and we were able to launch a few attacks. Our defending and marking improved and we lost fewer goals but unfortunately we were still defeated by 14 goals. Thanks to Hallfield for attending and to all the girls for their effort and hard work. Squad: Charlotte Batey (C), Rebecca Ng, Riyaa Krishna Kumar, Sophie Walden, Chloe Pike, Lydia England, Gabriella Jones, Anna Sum Results: Highclare v Hallfield School lost 14-0

Cross Country ISA Midlands Cross Country at Bedstone, Shropshire - Wednesday 1st February 2017 A combined Junior Schools squad of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils produced a spirited performance in very difficult conditions. The course is a mixture of pasture, woodland and pathways (some concrete) with a stream to navigate as well. The children all proved to themselves that they were excellent runners by the mere fact that they actually finished the race and without loss of any shoes. Highclare’s highest placed runner was Ruby Newman who finished 25th. There were approximately 100 runners in both the boys' and the girls' races.

Squad: Boys: Oscar Lugg, Sebastian Jones, Ben Worship, Sebastian Hoffman, Joshua Worship, Karam Johal Girls: Alice Griffiths, Ruby Newman, Charlotte Hunter, Saihaj Bains, Rosie Deacon, Bethany Roberts Highest placed finisher: Ruby Newman 25th out of 100 runners approximately.

Netball Under 10 and Under 11 Netball match against Hallfield School - Wednesday 8th February 2017 We arrived at Hallfield on a cold, wintry day so our warm up was especially important. After this we had a quick team talk and then our games got underway. Our U10 captain started the game with the first centre pass out to our attackers. We had lots of quick passes and hands up to receive the ball which helped us keep possession and get the ball up to our shooting circle. Our Goal Attack and Goal Shooter managed to send lots of shots towards the net and we managed to score our first goal in the 2nd quarter. The game finished 8-1 to Hallfield. Liberty Mackenzie was our player of the match selected by Hallfield. Meanwhile, on another court, the U11 game had commenced. Hallfield started this game but our excellent defenders were able to complete numerous snatches to get the ball away from our goal keeping the score down to 3-0 to Hallfield in the first quarter. In the second quarter we managed to keep the ball in our half more and our Goal Attacker

Ana Zubialde Alonso scored two goals consecutively. Our girls worked well together and scored another goal taking our total to 3 and Hallfield’s 6 as they scored another 3 in the last two quarters. The Under 11 boys played football at Highclare Sports Field and the girls welcomed our visitors to the Senior School to play hockey. All children in Year 6 played in the matches which was an excellent opportunity for everyone to represent the school in sport. The boys’ football saw Highclare win both matches they played, A and B teams, 9-1 and 3-0 respectively. They were entertaining games and gave Highclare boys the chance to show their exquisite passing skills and movement off the ball. The girls’ hockey game was a close match but unfortunately we lost 6-3 to a good team. It was a pleasure to host Burton Hathow and to make a new link with them. It was very much appreciated to hear positive comments about our pupils from them, so well done Highclare.

Fundraising for African Space Trust Burns Night at Highclare School A large group of parents, friends and members of African Space Trust, joined teachers and governors at Highclare School to mark the annual Scottish celebration of the anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth and to raise funds for our school charity African Space Trust. The hall was decked with tartan and Wilson Vale provided the catering which included haggis, neeps and tatties and strawberry shortbread. The haggis was piped in and, once the speeches were over, everyone took to the dance floor and enjoyed dancing to a live Ceilidh band. Burns Night was a huge success raising £951.30 for African Space Trust.

Pancake Races The children in the Junior Schools had great fun taking part in the Annual Sponsored Pancake Races on Shrove Tuesday in aid of our school charity, African Space Trust. The children received certificates for taking part in the event and a small prize was awarded to the winner from each class. Over £500 has been raised so far, so a great day for everyone.
