2019 WINTER ISSUE

What do we know about the jobs market for the current generation of school leavers? It is expected that it will be much more fluid than at present, with models of employment and selfemployment to which many generations of employees have never been exposed. It is also a commonly held view that people in the future will probably change jobs much more regularly than has traditionally been the case and will carry out actual functions that we do not yet know of. In the world’s increasingly fast moving economies, it serves everybody’s purpose to seek to develop employees who are clever and connected and who can operate successfully in a situation where they have limited time and are able to make accurate and speedy decisions. The imperative of operating in this superconnected world will make unprecedented demands on the skill set required for such work, a skill set comprising traditional (such as specific

importance of striking the correct balance between the traditional skills required for academic success and the skills required to be able to change seamlessly in the fluid labour market of the future. It certainly provides plenty of ‘food for thought’ as we give consideration, as we do almost constantly, to the planned outcomes achieved by our students, whatever their age, as they participate in the range of activities and events that comprise the school curriculum and co and extra curriculum.

A few years ago a report was published by the World Economic Forum[1] that identified and listed what it considered to be a desirable top 10 skill set for 2020 employees to acquire, maintain and develop. This is a group of cognitive and people skills, comprising:

We want our students to find their niche and excel in something relevant. We want this to happen because we know that many positive benefits flow from this boost to self-esteem. We know that it will serve the national economic purpose to produce innovative and creative individuals capable of adding much value to the productive process, and we are highly motivated to play our part in this process.

As we approach 2020 we will be working to continue to find ways of encouraging our students to develop these skills. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

It’s Complicated It’s Complicated - Riverside Performing Arts performed a ‘healthy relationships’ performance to our upper school early this term. Riverside Performing Arts then worked with each year group to develop their thoughts and ideas on what constitutes a healthy relationship. This proved to be a valuable and beneficial experience that highlighted themes and issues that are discussed within our PSHE curriculum.

U6 A Level Drama Theatre Trip A Day in the Death of Joe Egg – U6 A level drama pupils went to Trafalgar studios in London to watch the heart wrenching performance of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg – their set text for A level Drama and Theatre. The text is a story about marriage and the importance of the family unit when caring for a disabled daughter. Pupils were touched by the performance and found it to be beneficial as they start to study the play.

We Will Rock You 2

We Will Rock You rehearsals are well underway and pupils are looking forward to showcasing their hard work in March 2020. The performance features 24 of Queen’s biggest hits including Radio Ga Ga, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody and, of course, We Will Rock You!

Senior School West Midlands Art Competition Success Congratulations to Senior School pupil Tim Pan on achieving second place at the recent ISA West Midlands Art Competition in the KS3 Drawing category with this fantastic portrait of US president, Donald Trump.

Highclare Creative Writing Competition 2019 The Highclare Senior School English department welcomed pupils, parents, grandparents and teachers to the annual Highclare Creative Writing Competition 2019 presentation evening. This year students had been given the challenge to write a poem to celebrate 50 years since the moon landings in 1969. Mrs Dawson, Head of English, was very impressed with the entries. Students captured the excitement and drama of the event as well as showing a great deal of empathy for the astronauts who flew in Apollo 11. They had clearly learnt a great deal about the moon landings and were able to reflect this in their poetry. Nearly 300 pupils from local junior schools entered the competition, with a large proportion attending the presentation evening. It was wonderful to celebrate so much local talent. Congratulations to all of those that took part, particularly our overall winner Raniya Rahman of Mayfield Preparatory School.

On Thursday 21 November U5 pupils visited the WorldSkills UK LIVE Exhibition at the NEC. Students could visit various stands and talks where they obtained information on possible fields of work and businesses. You could obtain valuable information about the different industry sectors including health, hospitality and lifestyle, construction and infrastructure, engineering and technology, digital, business and creative. A plethora of businesses and companies appeared there including Airbus, Bam, Citb and Toyota. It was overall a very informative experience that I believe every student should be given the opportunity to have. It gave me some more insight into my potential career options. Gracious Kamangira U4 students are brimming with knowledge regarding career choices following a fantastic careers information morning, held at Highclare Senior School. A varied programme of events ensured that pupils enjoyed presentations covering diverse career paths, further complimented by thought provoking career activities. Pupils are now equipped with career food for thought and positive career conversations and questions are taking place. Our thanks to solicitor, Mrs Michelle Dean of HCB solicitors, Mrs Jane Faulkner a consultant anaesthetist, Mr Stuart Griffiths, engineer, Mrs Stef Langford-Brown, entrepreneur and Captain Toby Dudley of the armed forces for their informative and inspirational talks.

Highclare Business Network Event, Julia Willoughby On Tuesday, 15 October we extended a warm welcome to communications specialist Julia Willoughby as guest speaker at our most recent Highclare Business Network Event. Julia, founder of WPR, one of the country’s leading communications agencies, has had a career-long enthusiasm for helping businesses and organisations achieve their ambitions, which was clear throughout the evening. It was a particular pleasure to welcome Julia to Highclare School, since WPR is working closely with us on a number of projects. Her two sons, now grown up, also attended Highclare School. Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Paul Faulkner, once again led the event, during which attendees enjoyed anecdotes, expertly told by Julia, inspiring the audience to be ambitious, to follow their passion, work hard, self believe and self evaluate, to employ the right staff and to be the best, as results speak for themselves. Thank you to Jean Morton and Wendy Sharples from Erdington Foodbank for concluding the evening with an insight into the valuable work they do, £200 in charitable donations was raised during the evening. A fantastic evening was enjoyed by all. A special thank you goes to Julia Willoughby for her comments, expertly elicited by Paul Faulkner, and to Paul himself. Thanks also to Steve Smith and Alan Beddie and the team at Wilson Vale for providing such excellent food. Look out for news of our next event, which will be held on the evening of Tuesday 17 March 2020.

Sixth Former Invited to Interview at University of Oxford We wish Georgina every success as she has been invited to the University of Oxford this term. We are delighted to report that Georgina has successfully completed GAT examinations and that she has now been invited for interviews at Keble College, Oxford to read for a Geography degree.

Sixth Form London Trip Highclare Sixth Form enjoyed a very successful day trip to London on Thursday 5 December. After meeting early at school, students and staff travelled down to London by train, with the first stop being the iconic Shard building with breath-taking views across the London skyline from the 72nd floor. Next stop was Covent Garden for a fantastic 3 course lunch at Maxwell’s restaurant, before enjoying a brilliant performance of Mamma Mia at the Novello Theatre. After a spot of shopping around a very festive Covent Garden, the sixth form returned to Birmingham by train. Everyone had a great time.

Senior School Prize Giving 2018 – 2019 Senior School Prize Giving is always a much anticipated event on the school calendar and once again it proved to be a superb evening. It was an opportunity to reflect on the many wonderful events of the 2018-2019 academic year and to celebrate and recognise students for their outstanding achievements. Dr Luker presented a constant flow of accolades and achievements during his report of the academic year. The evening highlighted academic trips, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and the various charity work taking place across the school through speeches by current students Archie Moore, Ieva Modeliauskaite, Isabelle Dimascio and Jess Bonner. Special thanks go to our guest speaker Capt Katie Miller. It was a pleasure to welcome Katie to our celebration. She is a past Highclare Head Girl who, after leaving Highclare in 2005, continued to achieve incredible things including a career as a professional yachtswoman, competing in the 2009 Original Single Handed Transatlantic yacht race (spending 21 days alone at sea and becoming the youngest ever female finisher of this solo transatlantic race), an officer in the Royal Military Police and currently serving at Royal Air Force College Cranwell as a Leadership Instructor to RAF officers in training. It was inspiring to hear how Katie’s experiences at Highclare, including the strength of identity she felt, filled her with confidence and determination to know she could achieve any goal. It was a pleasure to hear how Katie believes her time at Highclare provided her with the tools to face every challenge positively and with determination even to this day. Throughout the evening Highclare String Ensemble, Rhapsody Chamber Choir, Jazz Band and Soloists performed rousing performances of Adiemus (Karl Jenkins), Valerie (The Zutons), My Ship (Gershwin/Weill) and Palladio (Karl Jenkins). A fantastic night was had and congratulations to all involved.

UK Bebras Computing Challenge In November, ten students from Highclare Senior School entered the annual UK Bebras Computing Challenge run by Oxford University. The Bebras Computing Challenge introduces computational thinking to students and is organised in over 40 countries. It is designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Students took a series of challenges online and aimed to solve as many problems as they could in 40 minutes. We are excited to announce that Tim in L5 and Sydney in L4 came in the top 10% of their year group and have been invited to take part in the next round of the competition in March. Congratulations to all the students who took part.

Charity and Conservation Activities in Costa Rica Highclare Senior School has always enjoyed a fantastic reputation for organising incredible trips, and the recent Geography trip to Costa Rica did not disappoint. Geographers aged 14-18 from Highclare Senior School recently experienced the trip of a lifetime with an eleven night visit to Costa Rica. Led by head of geography, Mrs Suzanne Cassell, and organised by specialist ethical travel company Glo-Ed Travel, the 26 students journeyed from the capital San Jose to Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast and then via Arenal and Monteverde to the Pacific coast, staying in seven different hotels on their journey, coast to coast. Whilst the students enjoyed a vast range of adrenaline-fuelled activities such as white water rafting on class IV rapids, canopy zip lining, sea kayaking and snorkelling as well as spotting amazing wildlife, the real highlight of the trip was the time spent engaged in voluntary and conservation work. Students across Highclare School raised money and donated items of stationery in anticipation of the voluntary work to be undertaken during this trip. Preparatory School pupils collected a fantastic amount of stationery during a non-uniform day and various fund raising events took place at our Senior School. This enabled Highclare students volunteering at a remote village primary school in Tortuguero to present every child with their own pencil case filled with essential school supplies. Students also took supplies such as calculators, bilingual books and paper for the school. “The joy on the faces of the young Costa Rican children receiving their gifts and reading with the Highclare School students was amazing to see,” said Mrs Cassell, Head of Geography. Conservation work during the trip was focused on helping the delicate local marine ecosystem, in particular the indigenous sea turtles. A huge clear up of plastic waste on a remote beach in Tortuguero yielded a vast quantity of material which could easily be mistaken for food by turtles. This work will have a huge impact on the fragile ecosystem. During this part of the trip students were incredibly lucky to witness a green sea turtle laying over 100 eggs in her nest before camouflaging them and returning to the ocean. This spectacular sight really helped students realise the immense and immediate impact that their conservation work had achieved and, of course, to consider future plastics use. It was an action packed and thought provoking trip which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. To find out more about what else our students enjoyed during their trip find some of the best moments and photos on the Geography Twitter feed. We hope you enjoy looking at them.

Highclare DofE Ambassadors Congratulations to the Highclare Senior School students who recently completed the Central England Duke of Edinburgh Ambassador programme. We look forward to seeing their training in action as these superb role models become integral members of the Highclare DofE team. On my training day I learnt how I could help Mrs Bate our DofE manager, explored in depth what the DofE scheme is about and how I could help and assist new participants to both enjoy their DofE journey and complete it. We practised presentation skills and how to confidently give a presentation which will help during DofE sessions and events. Isabelle Dimascio

Whitemoor Lakes September 2019

Prep School Panto Trip

4

Preparatory school pupils from reception to Yr6 enjoyed an entertaining performance of Cinderella at the Lichfield Garrick theatre. It was a charming production that had the children captivated and included both teacher and pupil participation. Following the trip it was wonderful to receive this email from a fellow audience member. I have had to write to you today as I'm extremely impressed by your children and staff. The children seem to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. But what has really impressed me was the interval. Staff were handing out drinks and biscuits and the children's behaviour was impeccable. I really do think the children and the very attentive staff are a credit to your school. I really hope this message is passed on to the children who made an enjoyable afternoon even more pleasurable. Please say a huge thank you to all those that were there today. Thank you. From a very happy Garrick customer.

The Jaguar Land Rover Experience

At the start of October, Yr5 enjoyed three wonderful days away at Whitemoor Lakes, experiencing a variety of activities. The children learnt skills in abseiling, archery, canoeing and team building as well as bed making skills, a first for many! The staff at the centre were very complimentary about the children’s attitude to embracing these new experiences and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone. Well done Year 5! The weather was not always on our side but persistent rain did not dampen the children’s sprits, just their clothes. The children ran, jumped, navigated, shot, paddled, climbed, zipped, abseiled and built. With such a range of activities to try, each student learnt new skills and grew emotionally, intellectually and possibly even physically, becoming more cooperative, confident, better communicators and independent. Over the three days it was lovely to observe the children come together, offering support and cheering each other on. Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their adventures at Whitemoor Lakes and still talk about how much fun they had during the organised activities, as well as the time sharing bedrooms with their friends.

Costa Rica Stationery Collection

During a trip to Jaguar Land Rover looking at engineering and manufacturing, Yr6 worked together to design a production line to build cars quickly and accurately. The children were fascinated by the factory tour, seeing the robots in action and learning how cars are built - thank you Jaguar Land Rover.

Thank you to all of the Highclare Preparatory School pupils who collected stationery this term. Senior School pupils and teachers packed enough pencil cases filled with stationery for all children at the school they were visiting in Costa Rica plus the neighbouring village. Highclare pupils have been so generous that further deliveries of stationery have been made since.

Yr4 Focus on Buddhism To mark the end of their fascinating topic on Buddhism in RE, Yr4P welcomed Mr Whitham, our visiting music guitar teacher, to talk about his Buddhist faith. The class were interested to find out about the reasons why Mr Whitham chose to become a Buddhist, how he worships at home and at the temple, and were very keen to take part in a relaxing group meditation session. Thank you to Mr Whitham for an insightful session.

Citizen Workshop Yr4 to Yr6

Yr5 and Yr6 Arts Recital Evening 2019 In November Highclare Preparatory School musicians and LAMDA pupils took part in the Yr5 and Yr6 Arts Recital Evening. The standard of the performances throughout the events was outstanding. Family and friends enjoyed a wide variety of instruments, diverse styles of music and vocal performances. As always the LAMDA performances complemented the musical performances with comical drama monologues and acting duos. I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge well done to all of the pupils who took part in the recent recital evenings and a thank you to all of the visiting music and LAMDA teachers for preparing their pupils so fully for their performances. These concerts are a great way for pupils to demonstrate what they have been learning during the term and allows them the opportunity to perform to a friendly audience of family and friends. Miss S Broder, Head of Preparatory Music

Yr6 Circus of Light Workshop Children in Yr6 took part in exciting activities to launch their new topic of light. Through the ‘Circus of Light’ workshops, designed by our senior school head of science, Mrs Dudley, the children found out for themselves that light travels in straight lines, that white light can be split into the colours of the spectrum and shadows increase in size the closer the light source is to an object. A huge ‘Thank you’ to Callum from Project Trust UK for coming into school to deliver workshops on global citizenship. It was very inspiring and pupils learnt a lot about themselves and the world around them.

Language Challenge

The pupils used equipment brought over from the Senior School and were required to use scientific investigation in order to achieve each of the tasks set, working as a team and following a method to achieve the aim. Everyone all worked incredibly hard to fulfil all the requirements in the time allowed, pupils thoroughly enjoyed this investigative approach to science and were extremely excited when they managed to arrange the equipment to split the light in to a ‘rainbow’! The workshop was held by Mrs Dudley at Highclare Preparatory School: Woodfield then repeated by Mrs Pears at Highclare Preparatory School: St Pauls, allowing all of our prep school Y6 pupils to benefit from additional resources and a more ‘senior school’ approach to science. The aim is that collaborations such as this help our Y6 students with their transition to secondary school life. It was a lovely afternoon and Mrs Dudley very much enjoyed being with the super excited and enthusiastic pupils.

Christmas Community Carol Singing

Pupils in Years 4-6 at Highclare Preparatory School have made a fantastic start to competing in uTalk’s Junior Language Challenge, a national app based language learning competition. Many have already scored high enough to qualify for the next round which will take place after Christmas. Children are introduced to new vocabulary on different topics in Spanish, which they practise through different games which increase in difficulty. The next round will test the children in French.

During the last few weeks of term Highclare Preparatory School choir entertained the local community through their wonderful singing of carols. The choir performed outstandingly throughout Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and Birmingham, including entertaining residents at New Oscott Retirement Village and a superb performance at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Presidents Lunch.

Yr2 Travel Back in Time

Prep School Instrumental Music Demonstration

This term Year 2 pupils visited Staffordshire Regiment Museum at Whittington Barracks as part of their history topic on war and remembrance. The children saw a real life trench, complete with the sound of gunfire, and learnt what it would have been like for soldiers who had to live in the trenches. Year 2 enjoyed looking at the weapons and uniforms that the soldiers wore during the World Wars. It was an incredible learning experience.

European Day of Languages 6

The European Day of Languages (EDL) is celebrated across Europe on the 26 of September every year. It aims to promote the rich linguistic diversity of Europe and raise awareness of the importance of lifelong language learning for everyone. It was set up by the Council of Europe and was first celebrated in 2001. Highclare Preparatory School had a fantastic time celebrating European languages. Throughout the day, each class welcomed a native speaker of a different European language, such as Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, German, Greek, Swedish and Norwegian, and enjoyed many activities . Yr2P sang ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ in Danish, learnt how to say hello, goodbye and thank you, learnt about Vikings and then labelled a Viking in Danish. ReceptionW learnt how to sing ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ in Hungarian. They loved singing and performing the actions! During celebration assembly children performed a song that included 5 languages and shared their knowledge of languages spoken at home, which included Turkish, Punjabi, Greek, Lithuanian, French, Portuguese and Hindi.

At the start of term Highclare Preparatory School pupils had the opportunity to meet the extremely talented visiting music teachers who deliver weekly instrumental lessons. Each visiting music teacher took to the stage to show our pupils the instrument they play, what it looks like and how it sounds. We heard many different styles of music, from classical, to pop, and western cowboy music to Spanish flamenco to name but a few. Our fantastic violin teacher, Miss Minchin, taught everyone how to play air violin and we performed a piece together. This was a wonderful morning of introducing our pupils into the world of instrumental music and we hope that it has inspired them to learn an instrument at school. If you would like further information or would like your child to learn an instrument or receive singing lessons, please contact s.broder@highclareschool.co.uk.

Jack and the Beanstalk visit Yr1 The Yr1P children have been excitedly exploring and discovering the beanstalk that grew in their classroom this term. They have been inspired to write their own versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, we have loved reading their creative writing pieces.

Pre-Prep Learn About Christingle Pre-Prep pupils enjoyed a visit from Rev Cath recently who spoke to the children about the meaning of a Christingle. Dressed as an orange, Rev Cath asked the Swans for help to attach different parts of the Christingle as they learnt the meaning of each. The orange is the world, the red ribbon represents Jesus, the fruit represents our needs being met and the candle represents Jesus as the light.

Highclare Preparatory School Pupils Scoop National Art Prize

BBC Children In Need 2019 Highclare Preparatory School supported Children In Need this term whilst celebrating their PSHCE day. Pupils looked at kindness, respect and tolerance through various activities linked to raising money for BBC Children In Need. Pupils collected copper coins and stretched them as far around the school as they could! PrePrep focused ‘Circle Time’ on kindness and the children took it in turns to say how they could be kind to their friends at school or at home. They then covered Pudsey with the copper coins they had collected. Yr2 played a board game during their PSHCE lesson, helping them to recognise and talk about different emotions in a fun way.

Pre-Prep Christmas Workshop Highclare Preparatory School is delighted to be celebrating national success at the recent prestigious ISA National Art Competition. The ISA National Art Competition is an annual competition and provides a wonderful opportunity for Highclare pupils of all ages to showcase their art at regional and national events. With over 2000 entries, covering different age groups and genres, it has been reported that the standard of artwork entered this year has been incredible, which made the judging tough for adjudicators Sarah Casey (Senior Lecturer in Drawing and Installation at Lancaster University) and Joanne Crawford (Head of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds). An exciting array of artwork was submitted by Highclare students to the regional competition, covering a variety of categories and themes. At a regional level Highclare School achieved a superb three 1st places, three 2nd places and four Highly Commended. Artwork by the three 1st place winners went on to the national competition, facing a stiff challenge from over 200 regional winners. We are very pleased to announce that, ‘My First Selfie’ by Isabelle D achieved 1st place nationally in the KS2 and Under Photography category and ‘William Morris’ by Emily S took 2nd place nationally in the EYFS and KS1 Drawing category. A fantastic triumph for Highclare Preparatory School. At Highclare Preparatory School we aim to instil a love of the creative arts and fully understand the importance of art within the curriculum. The opportunity for pupils to explore their own ideas, develop their creativity and foster techniques of self-expression through creative activities linked to classroom topics are values that we nurture and support from the beginning of pre-prep. Congratulations to entrants and winners for your fantastic achievement! Mrs P Bennett, Head of Highclare Preparatory School.

Pre-Prep Magic of Christmas The Swans had a magical day in their Christmas jumpers, they enjoyed their Christmas lunch and were very excited when Father Christmas arrived. They shared their ‘Letters to Santa’, sang songs to him and they all received a present.

Cygnets at Highclare PrePreparatory School thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas workshop this term. It was an opportunity to share their pre-prep with family and friends and the room was filled with music, singing, laughter, crafts, glitter, friends and family. What a perfect way to spend the afternoon.

KS1 Bake a Perfect Christmas Recipe KS1 amazed family and friends with a wonderful performance of ‘Christmas Recipe’ on the lead up to Christmas. All pupils who took part performed with enthusiasm, delivering lines with confidence and singing beautifully. It was clear how much hard work and dedication had been put in to each performance to ensure the Christmas Recipe was just right!

Pre-Prep Nativity, The First Christmas Family and friends have enjoyed wonderful nativity performances by the swans at Highclare Pre-Preparatory School. The children all performed amazingly well in front of an audience with enthusiastic singing and well-rehearsed dance routines. It was wonderful to see so many proud faces on stage and in the audience.

Headmaster’s Golf Challenge 2019 Congratulations to all those who took part in the Headmaster’s Golf Challenge 2019. Certainly the wettest Headmaster’s Golf Challenge to date took place on a cold and rainy Monday evening hosted, once again, at Walmley Golf Club. Despite the terrible weather parents, pupils, friends and staff of Highclare School took part in a sociable and competitive evening of golf. Playing in teams, the competitors enjoyed the course and irrespective of the wet weather a good evening was enjoyed by all. The Headmaster’s Golf Challenge is open to all and it was fantastic to see so many pupils take part this year, who all showed true Highclare determination and resilience! It was a very close competition but team Jacklin were victorious with a level par. The team comprised Harry Lawrence (captain), Stuart Lawrence, Ian Gibson and Richard Luker. Team Seve (Steve Hughes, Antony Price and Viren Sohi) came in a close second, just 1 over par. Thanks must go to Brad Hurst for his helpful organisation, our sponsors and all at Walmley Golf Club for their kind hospitality. Thoughts are already turning to the next challenge. Keep an eye out for details.

Friends of Highclare School Firework Party Success Friends Of Highclare School were overwhelmed with the demand and attendees at the annual Firework Night on 8 November. Parents and volunteers from across all three sites turned up in full force to set up from 1.30pm on Friday afternoon and whilst we experienced some light showers late afternoon, we were blessed with dry weather all evening. Guests got to enjoy three displays during the course of the evening building up to the grand finale at 8.15pm. Congratulations to all our raffle winners and special thanks to Hotel Du Vin, The Alchemist, Yoga Sweat, Cyclax, Blink Photography, Driving Miss Daisy, Tranquil Energy Therapies, BowBeez Sleepover Parties, Barbour
