Thishandbookisaimedmainlyatnewstudents,tohelpyoutosettleinquicklybyexplaininghowtheschool works,andwhotospeaktoifyouhaveanyproblems.Itisalsousefulforʻoldʼstudents,asthemostuptodate guidetotheroutinesandregulationsinplace.

Forboarders,yourHouseisyourhomefromhomewithintheschoolduringtermtime Wewant youtofeel comfortableandsafeinyourboardinghouse-dobringpicturesandposterswithwhichtoʻpersonaliseʼyour space.Youarewelcometouseyourown(named)bedding(duvetcover,pillowcases)too.Thereisnoschool uniform,sopleasebringcomfortablecasualclothestowear-butpleasebearinmindthatstoragespaceis limitedandwhatcomestoschool,eventuallyhastogobackhome!

EmergencyContact

Intheeventofillnessorinjuryeveryeffortwillbemadetocontactyourparentsorguardian.Untilyour parent/guardianiscontacted,theSchoolwilltakeanyactionrequiredinyourbestinterests Manyofthe SchoolstaffaretrainedEmergencyFirstAidersandintheeventofanaccident,appropriateFirstAidwillbe given

OurCounsellor,MsNickyMorris,worksfromtheHealthCentreonfourdayseachweekandcanseestudentsin strictconfidence.AnystudentmayrequestanappointmentwithherviatheHealthCentreorbycontactingher directly.

Medication

ItistheSchoolʼspolicythatstudentsdonottakemedicationwithoutsupervision Nostudentisallowedtobe

inpossessionofprescribedorover-the-countermedicationswithoutpriorassessmentbytheMedicalTeam Exceptionsareasthmainhalersandepipensforsevereallergies

Ifneeded,yourparentsshouldsupplytheSchoolwithaspare,namedinhaler/epipenwhichwillthenbestored inaknown,accessibleplaceincaseofanemergency,orforSchooltrips

Housesanctionswillgenerallyinvolveʻpayingbackʼinsomeway,suchastidyingupcommunalareas,oraloss ofprivileges,suchasbeingaskedtogotobedearlier,orbeingconfinedtotheschoolcampus.

5.SIXTHFORM

WhenstudentsjointheSixthForm,youaretakinganothersteptowardsbecomingindependentadults,but thismustbemanagedinthecontextofthefactthatyouarestillstudentsataschool.WegiveSixthForm studentsmoreflexibilityandprivilegesbutwealsoexpectstudentstoremaingoodrolemodelsandany breachoftheruleswillbedealtwithaccordingtotheschoolʼsbehaviourpolicy

5.1SIXTHFORMCENTRE

SixthFormstudentshaveuseofthe SixthFormCommonRoomonthegroundflooroftheMainBuilding.This spaceisgivenforSixthFormstudentstousefreelybutusemaybewithdrawniftheschoolrulesandtherules oftheSixthFormCommonRoomarenotrespected.

Belowaresomeguidelinesastotheuseofthespace,butthesemayevolveastheyearprogresses.Anupto datelistwillbeavailableintheSixthFormCommonRoomatalltimes.

● Thisisacommunalspaceandshouldbetreatedwithrespect.

● Theequipmentandfurnitureprovidedmustbetreatedwithcareandanydamagereportedtothe HeadofSixthFormimmediately

● PermissiontousetheSixthFormCommonRoommaybewithdrawnatanytimebytheHeadofSixth Formeitherforindividualstudentsorforawholeyeargroup

StudentsintheSixthFormhavemoreflexibilitythanstudentslowerdowntheschoolwithregardstotheir movementsonandoffsite.SixthFormstudentsmaybeallowedtosignoutofschoolatcertaintimesaer school,providingtheymaintainagoodbehaviouralandacademicrecord.

● SixthFormstudentswhohavepassedtheirdrivingtestandneedtousetheirvehicletotraveltoand fromschoolmustseekpermissionfromthePrincipalviathePrincipalʼsPAbeforebringingtheirvehicle ontotheschoolsite

6.BEHAVIOUR

PRINCIPLESANDEXPECTATIONS

● ThePurcellSchoolencouragesthegoodbehaviourofitsstudentsatalltimes.Theschoolattaches greatimportancetocourtesy,integrity,goodmanners,gooddisciplineandrespectfortheneedsof others

TheSchoolRules(seeAppendix1)andtheschoolʼsAnti-BullyingPolicymakeclearourexpectationsin thisregard

● Theguidingprincipleisthattheschooltrustsstudentstoknowhowtobehaveandtoactatalltimesin theirownbestinterestsandthoseofthewholeschoolcommunity Onlywhenstudentsbreachthis trustwillsanctionsberequired.

Rewards

Studentswhodoparticularlygoodworkrelativetotheirability,ormakeapositivecontributiontothelifeof theschool,receiveaCommendation TheCommendationcardisissuedbyateacher,TutororHouseparent; thestudentshouldtakeittothePrincipalforrecording,beforetakingithometoshowtohisorherparents.

Attheendoftheschoolyear,prizesareawardedforachievementinacademicsubjects,incommendations awarded,inmusicandforgeneralcontributiontothelifeoftheschool.

ExpectationsandSanctions

TheSchoolʼsBehaviourManagementStrategyprovidesarangeofsanctionsinagradualscaleofincreasing severitydesignedtoencouragethestudenttowardsanacceptablelevelofattainmentorbehaviour.Possible sanctionsforminoroffencesorpooracademicworkincludedetentions,gating(ie notbeingallowedtoleave theschoolpremisesor,forboarders,thehouse),academicreportorsupervisedprivatestudy

Suspension

Seriousorrepeateddisciplinaryoffencesmayresultinthestudentʼssuspensionforbetweentwodaysandtwo weeks,andafinalwarningmayalsobeissued Whilesuspended,thestudentisexpectedtoremainathome duringtheschoolday,andworkwill,wheneverpossible,beset.Asuspendedstudentmaynotattendany schoolfunction(eg concert)orsocialevent (Astudentmayalsobesuspendedwhilstaninvestigationintoan

Expulsion

InthemostextremecircumstancesthePrincipalreservestherighttoexpelagirlorboyfromtheschool Althoughthestudentʼsbestinterestswillbetakenintoconsideration,theinterestsofthewholeschool communityandthenatureoftheoffencewillbeofparticularsignificance Insuchcircumstances,parentshave arightofappealtotheschoolgovernors.

TheschoolʼspolicyisthatThePurcellSchoolshouldbefreefromcontrolleddrugs.Webelievethat involvementwithcontrolleddrugsisalwayswrongforthefollowingreasons:

TheuseoftheSchoolʼsnetworkandequipmentisaprivilegeandnotaright TheSchooltakesreasonable stepstocontrolandmonitortheuseoftheinternetandotherelectronicmeansofcommunicationwithout unnecessarilyordisproportionatelycompromisingtheprivacyofboardersortheirabilitytocommunicate withtheirparents,guardiansoroutsideagencies.TheSchoolwillthereforedetermineappropriateuseand monitoruseraccountsandfileserverspaceasnecessary. 1.ATTENDANCE
