“Pupilsʼattitudestolearningareexemplary;thestandardsofmusicianshipachievedbythepupilsare outstanding;pupilsachievehighstandardsintheirotheracademicwork;theSchoolʼsprovisionforthosewith specialeducationalneedsand/ordisabilities(SEND)andEnglishasanadditionallanguage(EAL)ishighly effective,ensuringthatthesepupilsalsomakeexcellentprogressinlinewiththeirpeers.”

Therearealotofconcertsoutsideschool,somemoreformalandhigh profilethanothers Theseareprogrammed bytheDirectorofMusicandHeadsofDepartmentinconsultationwithinstrumentalteachers.

OutsideConcertsindependentofschool

StudentsareencouragedtotakepartinmusicalactivitiesoutsideSchool,particularlyattheweekendandduring schoolholidays Eventsthatclashwithschooldaysarenotencouraged,becauseourtermsareshortandourdays arebusy,andwealreadymanageacomplextimetableofclashesbetweenmusiclessonsandacademiclessons. Permissionmustberequested,andwillonlybegivenwhentheprosandconshavebeenconsideredbythe DirectorofMusic.Thisisevenmorerestrictedthanusual,whilethecoronaprovisionsareinplace.

5.PHYSICALCONTACT

Itissometimesnecessarytomakephysicalcontactwithastudent Forexample,itcanbealoteasierforastudent tolearnhowitfeelstohaveacorrecthandshape(lehandorbowhold),howitfeelstomakeacorrectmovement (fingering,bowing,shiing,vibrato),iftheteachercanactuallytakeholdoftheappropriatepartofthehandorarm andmoulditormoveitintherightway

Touchingastudentinthiswayshouldbedoneverysparingly,andperhapsonlyasalastresort. Alwaysaskthe studentfirst,forexample: “DoyoumindifIputyourfingerintherightplaceonthestring?”,“Wouldyoufindit helpfulifImovedyourarmforyoutoshowyouhowthismovementshouldfeel?” Ifyoudotouch,doitpositively andinaprofessionalmannerwithnoembarrassmentorhesitation Beawareofthelimitswithinwhichsuch contactshouldproperlytakeplace Havingmadeyourphysicaldemonstration,moveimmediatelybackoutofthe studentʼsbodyspace.

Ifanyunusual,perhapsaccidental,physicalcontactoccursbetweenyouandastudent,reportitimmediatelythe lessonendsandmakeanoteoftheevents
