Welcome to the new look Notes From Purcell newsletter. We have combined updates from students, alumni and the School to bring you a one-stop shop of newswhichwehopeyouenjoyreading.
It has been another jam-packed year at Purcell, with just under 200 concerts performedbyourremarkablestudents.Aswecometotheendoftheacademic year,withstaffandstudentsaliketakingacollectivebreather,welookaheadtoa futureunderanewGovernmentandwhatthismeansforourSchool.TheLabour Party’s pledge to add VAT on school fees is of great concern to many. Coupled withthepotentialimpactoftheremovalofthe80%businessraterelief,thereare undoubtedly tougher times ahead for the sector. However, with the continued supportofourdonors,wecannavigatethesechallengesandcontinuetoprovide a gold standard education for all talented young musicians, regardless of their financial circumstances. We will be sure to keep you updated as the situation progresses.

Thenews,whichmarksthefirstanniversaryof TheirMajestiesCoronation,followsthethorough analysisofoveronethousandorganisationsof whichThelateQueen,TheformerPrinceof WalesandTheformerDuchessofCornwallwere Patrons.
TheformerPrinceofWalesbecamePatronof ThePurcellSchoolinMarch1985andhas bestowedtheSchoolwithcontinuedand invaluablesupportforthelast39years.In1998, TheformerPrinceofWalesformallyopenedthe School’scampusinBushey,Hertfordshire,andin 2003acceptedtheUNESCOMozartGoldMedal forOutstandingContributionToArtsEducation onbehalfofThePurcellSchool.
InapreviousmessagesenttotheSchool,The formerPrinceofWalescommentedthat“The PurcellSchoolisanextraordinaryinstitution withaveryspecialplaceinmyheart”and“itis myparticularwishthatthisprovisioncontinues toflourishandgrowwiththenurturingofthese veryspecialyoungpeopleatthecentreofits work.”

Classical Voice Masterclasses WeareincrediblyproudofThePurcellSchoolMasterclassProgrammeasitenablesustoinvite artists,teachersandmusiciansintoschoolforaninjectionofinspiration.Assuch,wehavebeen supremelyfortunateforourvoicedepartmenttobeinvolvedinsomefantasticmasterclassesin recentweeks.
Masterclassesaresoimportant-forthestudents,thesignificanceoftheseuniqueencountersisa greatmotivatortopractiseandprepareinadvance;theadvicegivenatthetimehasaheightened importancebecauseofthecontext.Inaddition,thoseobservingfromtheaudienceexperiencethe sametuitionvicariouslyandlearnmuchaboutthemusic,andhowtoimpartitsmeaning–students don’troutinelyobserveeachother’slessonsotherwise.
Beforetheendofthesummerterm,theclassicalsingersweretreatedtoyetanotherstunning masterclassgivenbyProfessorRichardJackson(RCM/Guildhall).Richarddrawsonhisown illustriouscareertoguidesingersthroughtheirsongs.Hewasaregularmemberofthecelebrated Songmakers’Almanacandhisknowledgeoftheartsongrepertoireisastonishing Heisalways encouragingand,atthesametime,entertaining.Thesingersdrewhugeinspirationfromtheclass andweeagerlylookforwardtohisnextvisit.
In early June the singers were joined in their regular song class by Stephanie Edwards, a former Purcellianwholeftin2015.StephaniewoweduswithhersingingofoperaticariasbyBizetandLehar andahighlydramaticliedbyMendelssohn.Shethentalkedusthrough(andansweredquestionson) hertrainingattheRoyalScottishConservatoire,postgraduatestudiesinBerlinandthefascinating andarduousprocesslastyearofherauditioning(successfully)foraplaceinthechorusoftheRoyal Opera,CoventGarden.Thewholesessionwasarealsourceofinspirationtoourcurrentsingers.
On the 12th June, a group of Purcell singers observed a masterclass given by the internationally renowned mezzo-soprano, Anne-Sophie von Otter. It was held in the base of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Tufnell Park. Anne-Sophie was working with four singers who are on the orchestra’sYoungArtistsprogramandwhosangsongsandariasbyMonteverdi,Bach,Charpentier andHaydn.Drawingonherownextensiveexperience,sheledthesingersthroughtheirariaswith technicalandmusicaladvicewhichinspiredthesingersandallofthoseobserving.
IMPULSE Trip to Dover Aspartofouraward-winningIMPULSE Outreachprogramme,ledbyHeadof CompositionAlisonCox,agroupofPurcell studentstravelledtoDovertoworkwith primaryschoolchildrenfromtheWhinless DownAcademySchool.
ThetripsawtheIMPULSEteamrun workshopswiththeyoungstudentsfrom theWhinlessDownAcademyand culminatedinaspeciallyconceived Children’sConcert,whichincludedfilm,pop songsandclassicalmusic.Theaudienceof over250childrenandparentswere delightedbyit!
Thetripwasincrediblywellreceivedwith PeterCook,theAcademy’sExternalMusic Provider,commentingthatitwasa‘really excellentandinspiringfewdays’.Hewent ontoexplainthat‘Itwasgreattosee primaryschoolchildrenbeingmentoredso enthusiasticallybytheIMPULSEgroup...

Romanian Trip DuringMayhalf-term,threeofour students,Herman(Year13),Rhea (Year13)andShlomi(Year11)hadthe opportunitytotraveltoBrasov, Romaniaforafullweektoperform concertorepertoirewiththeBrasov PhilharmonicOrchestra,conducted byourDirectorofMusic,PaulHoskins. Theprogrammeincluded Beethoven’sPianoConcertoNo.3,the MozartOboeConcertoand Tchaikovsky’sConcertoforViolin Bothstudentsandstaffhada wonderfulweek,filledwithmusicand explorationofanewcity.
Birmingham University OnFriday26thApril,Year12students Rebecca,Ella,Phoebe,AaronandBirce travelledtoBirminghamUniversityto performina‘BarberLunchtime Concert’intheElgarConcertHall.They playedMendelssohn’sTrioinDminor forviolin,celloandpiano,andBrahms’ TrioinAminorforclarinet,celloand piano.Congratulationstothemfor performingsuchacomplexprogramme withmaturityandflair.
All Saints Church, Leighton Buzzard Foursaxophonestudentswere privilegedtobethefirstperformersin anewseriesoflunchtimeconcertsin AllSaintsChurch,LeightonBuzzard.
Alargeaudienceattendedandweredelightedwiththequartet’sperformance,manyspeaking afterwardstoPurcellstudentsandstaffexpressinghowenlighteningitwastohearsaxophones playedinsuchaway,fromexpressivetojazzy,contemporaryandclassicaltoEasternfolkorientated music.

OnTuesday25thJune,theLowerSixthPurcell PianoTrio–Phoebe,RebeccaandElla–were honouredtobeinvitedtoperform MendelssohnPianoTrioNo.1inthehistoric KingJamesDrawingRoomatHatfieldHouse. TheroomisnamedafterthestatueofKing JamesIwhichsitsabovethemantelpiece.
Theconcertwasawonderfulstarttothelaunch ofthe2024HatfieldHouseMusicFestival concertseasonandthetrioweredelightedto beinvitedtoperform.

Lunchtime Concert at St Bride's, Fleet Street StBride’sChurch,FleetStreet hasheldaseriesoffree lunchtimeconcertsand recitalsforover30years, supportingandpromotinga diverserangeofmusicians. Thisconcertfeaturedtwo winnersofThePurcellSchool StringandWindSonata Competitions,Year13 studentsThomasandMina. Theprogrammeincludedtwo substantialworks-York Bowen'sSonataforClarinet, followedbyRebeccaClarke's SonataforViola-both accompaniedbyoneofour staffpianistsDebbieShah.

CongratulationstoYear13studentsChloe,Jessie,Jiahao andPhoebe(Year12)whoplayedbrilliantlyatthis prestigiousvenue.
Grand Summer Concert at Southwark Cathedral TheendofJunesawourhotlyanticipated(andsoldout!)GrandSummerConcertwhichtook placeinsidethestunningSouthwarkCathedral.TheprogrammeincludedBruckner Ecce Sacerdos,PoulencandBeethoven.
Wewerehonouredtobejoinedbyworld-renownedorganistWayneMarshalltoplayPoulenc’s Organ Concerto in G minor,conductedbyPaulHoskins.Tohearsuchapieceplayedsomasterfully insidetheCathedralwasbreathtaking.
ThissignificanteveningalsomarkedthelastperformancethatEdwardLongstaffconductedasa memberofstaffafter31yearsofservice.FortheiconicBeethoven’s 9th Symphony weassembled achoirofover100alumni(ofthreedecadesandseveralcontinents)tosingwith30ofoursingers, alongsideour60-strongorchestra.ItisatestamenttoEdthatwehadcompletelyfilledthealumni choirspaceswithinacoupleofweeksofputtingthecall-out!
Thewholeschoolattendedthemagnificentriversidevenueononeofthelongestdaysofthe year.Itwasatrulymemorableoccasion,notonlyforEd,butforeverybodyinvolved.
We’redelightedtosaythattheconcertwasfilmedandwewillsharethefootagewithyouassoon astherecordingisavailable.

TheEchoEnsembleformedin2015whenNoahMaxwasastudentofThePurcellSchool Inthemidstof writinghisensemblework,ThreeEchoes,Noahenlistedagroupoffellowstudentstotryoutthepiece and,inneedofagroupchatfortherehearsals,EchoEnsemblewasborn WhilestillstudyingatPurcell, thetalentedgroupgavetheirfirstpublicconcerts.
EchoEnsemblewillfinishastheybeganbyperformingbelovedmasterpieces,championingnewworks andunearthinghiddengems.

Chloe Harrison As mentioned earlier, in June (alongside current Purcell student Birce (clarinet)), alumna Chloe Harrison(horn)wasinvitedtoperformatthefestival’s ‘Coffee Concert – New Virtuosi’ event by composer James Francis Brown. Chloe successfully performed York Bowen’s Horn Sonata with accompanist Daniel Swain.
