‘Passing It On' A new rugby pavilion for Smithfield

Stonyhurst vs Kersal 1921

From the Patrons Rugby lies at the heart of Stonyhurst's sporting heritage. 2021/2022 marks the first Centenary of Rugby at Stonyhurst and Stonyhurst is celebrating this anniversary by redeveloping its rugby facilities, focusing on Smithfield, home to the 1st XV pitch, where they wish to build a distinctive new pavilion. We know how rugby builds friendships, which endure far beyond the final whistle. Stonyhurst is determined that this pavilion will be a testament to such friendships and to the strength of its community, standing tall on Smithfield for many years to come. We are appealing to the Stonyhurst family, both at home and abroad, to work together as ‘men and women for others’ to help achieve the fundraising target of £200,000 for this new pavilion, recognising and building on Stonyhurst's proud rugby legacy for the benefit of its current pupils and those who join in the future. We are delighted to announce cornerstone funding for this pavilion provided by Stonyhurst's Gibraltar community together with a programme of support from its previous 1st XV Captains, Team and Playroom members.

Getting it over the line The ‘Passing It On’ Appeal is seeking to raise £200,000. This covers the total costs of building the pavilion, all internal fixtures and fittings and pitch-side equipment. This fundraising campaign is aimed at all those members of the Stonyhurst community who have enjoyed playing, supporting and coaching rugby. In addition to the cornerstone support provided by the Gibraltar community, a programme of support from many of our 1st XV Captains from 1959 to the present day has been initiated. Historic 1st XV and Playroom members are being asked to commit to their dedicated 'Captains' Campaigns' and this funding initiative will be important to our overall success.

Of all the theatres of sport I have been fortunate enough to play, Smithfield is the one forever in my mind. Athletes and friends, a unique atmosphere, the best coach that I ever had in Fr Charles Higham SJ - all a huge influence in my life. The Pavilion will be a fitting tribute to a field of honest combat. Barry O'Driscoll OS 60 Ireland International Patron of the 'Passing It On' Appeal 5

Captains' Campaign This campaign is part of the 'Passing It On' Appeal. We are looking to the captains of the 1st XVs, from 1959 to the present day, to harness the support of their teams and all those in their Playrooms, with a suggested donation of £100 + Gift Aid. Funds raised will be specifically used to provide internal fixtures and fittings together with rugby equipment to enhance training. All participating teams will be included on the Captains' Campaign honours board in the pavilion. Individual team members who donated will be listed in the Stonyhurst Development Annual Giving Report 2020/2021. All donors will receive a commemorative lapel pin.

[As a five-year-old watching my brother, Barry, play] I have abiding memories of Smithfield. I absorbed the importance attached to winning, and yet it was the taking part that really mattered. I made up my mind, even then, that in the years to come I too would be part of this. When eventually I did play on Smithfield it did not disappoint. To this day I still feel a sense of excitement on the occasions I am there to watch a match or even just stroll around the empty pitch. Final Whistle A pavilion on Smithfield will greatly enhance the 'Stonyhurst Rugby Experience' for players , match day officials and spectators alike. To those who played support this as you supported each other on the field. Brian Ashton MBE History Teacher at Stonyhurst 1980-1989 England Head coach 2006-2008

After a year of COVID restrictions the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sporting participation, excellence, and pathways is one which is very exciting. This pavilion will reaffirm that rugby remains at the centre of the Stonyhurst experience. Simon Charles Director of Sport and Head of Rugby, Stonyhurst

We aim to blow the final whistle for this appeal on the 31st August 2021 so that the pavilion can be officially opened on 3rd June 2022, at the Centenary of Rugby Tournament.

The Patrons

Joey Garcia (OS 97)

I am absolutely delighted to be able to play a leadership role, alongside friends and family from Gibraltar, in this exciting project. Playing rugby at Stonyhurst has been a privilege for generations of OS, and provided many of us with deep rooted lessons on work ethic, commitment and loyalty, which we have carried into a variance of professional careers. I am very confident that this pavilion will enhance the experience for players and supporters alike for years to come. Stonyhurst provided the foundations for my rugby career. Leading my team out onto Smithfield is one of my proudest memories and where I made lasting friendships.

Barry O'Driscoll (OS 60)

I still have great memories of my time at Stonyhurst and especially playing rugby. I was lucky enough to play with very talented players and great years. It is with great pleasure that I endorse this appeal for a new pavilion and I look forward to visiting it at the Centenary Rugby Tournament in June 2022.

The Patrons I first played on Smithfield as an 11-year-old, in the final of the St. Mary’s Hall 7s tournament, against Kirkham Grammar. The size of the pitch was daunting, but the electric atmosphere supercharged us the home team. Joe Ansbro (OS 04)

Fast forward seven years and that pitch and that home support inspired me to pursue rugby to the highest level I could reach. Whether I was in the crowd, or on the field, Smithfield was always a special place to watch a special game.

Playing rugby at Stonyhurst gave me some of my greatest sporting memories. The values that were instilled in us carried far beyond Smithfield and I often reflect on those special times even today. Kevin Barrett (OS 98)
