Clubs & Activities Spring Term 2022 African Dance Club and Dance from Around the World Club (Year 7 and Year 3-4) These two themed dance clubs for two different age groups are now being run as one combined club. The vibrant club embraces dance steps, travelling movements and the rhythm of Africa. Pupils have the opportunity to gain an understanding of African dance culture and learn a range of dance techniques and develop choreography ideas to work towards an appearance at Harlow’s Multicultural Dance Festival. Media Studies Club (Year 9-11) In Media Studies Club pupils learn how to analyse a variety of media forms, such as film, TV and marketing, with the intention of putting what is learnt into practice. Currently the club’s focus in on film: how Hollywood film narratives are typically constructed and why. Stemming from this, it is hoped that pupils will produce plans for a film of their own (such as scripts and storyboards) eventually leading to some filming and editing of a scene from the created film. Fun Club (Reception) Children from across the year group come together to choose different toys to explore and play with each week. The club is a great forum in which to build new friendships and to independence as the children choose what activities to do each week. Maths Challenge Club (Year 8-9) In the spring, Saint Nicholas will take a team of Year 8 and 9 pupils to a Team Maths Challenge competition in Cambridge. 10 | St Nicholas School Clubs, Sports Clubs & Activities

Knitting (and sewing) club runs on a Monday after school and any potential club participants should email Mrs Storey to confirm their place as spaces are limited.
Recorder Club (Year 6-7) This club follows the Music Medals syllabus, which includes teacher-led assessments for younger learners. The sessions build on what has already been taught in group lessons and enable pupils to gain recognition for their hard work. There are five progressive levels: Copper and Bronze are stepping stones to Grade 1; Silver, Gold and Platinum reward further progress.
Classics Club (Year 7-8) Recently, the focus of this club has been around the Roman invasion of Britain. Pupils have explored what the Celtic people who lived here would have looked like and lived like, while comparing fighting tactics with the scary Romans pictured. They have also assembled archaeological fragments of the Battersea shield and have made
Creative Writing Club (Year 9-11) The creative writing group, for pupils in years 9-11, offers an opportunity for pupils to explore their imaginations and hone their skills of self-expression. Through various prompts and tasks, pupils can improve their descriptive writing skills in an informal context. Through a mixture of discussion, drafting, and reading aloud, we produce a wide variety of pieces, both short and long. Clubs & Activities Spring Term 2022 Story Box Club (Year 3) In this club, the children are inspired to make their own favourite story within a box. This means making puppets, which are hand sewn, and placing them in a wonderful setting from their favourite story. Recently the children have carefully designed templates of their puppets and carefully cut and sewn them together before creating their scene within their boxes. It’s a fantastic way to bring stories to life. Eco Club (Year 4) This club is a great way to get back to nature and to put those green fingers to good use. Pupils have fun maintaining the school allotments, harvesting the vegetables, looking after local wildlife, discovering new mini beasts through pond dipping and thinking of new ways for the school to be even more environmentally friendly. Hard work is often rewarded by toasting marshmallows over a fire and drinking hot chocolate with friends. This club is limited to 10 pupils. Journalism Club (Year 6-8) Journalism club is split into two sections. The first half of the www.saintnicholasschool.net
session gives pupils the opportunity to watch, discuss and share their opinions on current news topics. The second half of the session is given to pupils to report the news concerning both the school and the wider community. The pupils work together to research, write, edit and distribute a newsletter. Busy Bees Club (Reception) This Spring Reception will have the opportunity to take part in ‘Busy Bees Club’. Here your child will work on their Fine Motor Skills through a range of activities including, but not limited to: threading, playdough, cutting along lines, finger gym challenges, sticker pictures, colour, mark making and mazes, using pegs, tweezers and tongs, the list is endless. Drawing and Art Club (Year 2) Art and drawing club provides the opportunity to learn different artist techniques, with each session exploring different techniques and styles. The class will cover model making, printmaking, painting and drawing. All activities will be carefully planned to stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of art. School Production This year, the annual school production will be ‘We will Rock you’ and the performance will be staged in the St Nicholas School Clubs, Sports Clubs & Activities | 13
Clubs & Activities Spring Term 2022 summer term of 2022. All children who wish to be involved in the production are invited to attend rehearsals with Mrs Bradford and Miss Agrotis on Tuesdays from 4pm until 5pm. Baking Club (Year 8) The Baking Club provides the Year 8 members with a different recipe every week. Pupils will learn how to create simple bakes from scratch and pick up new kitchen and teamwork skills as they will bake in pairs. Spanish Film Club (Year 10) In Spanish club this term, we are going to be showing some Spanish language films. This will be for Year 10. Films aren’t just for fun: they also give us a cultural education that enriches our language comprehension. Films show a more 14 | St Nicholas School Clubs, Sports Clubs & Activities
Clubs & Activities Spring Term 2022 natural form of language with authentic vocabulary and slang, teaching us to connect words with associated body language. Furthermore, the visual aspect of a film helps to support listening comprehension along with vocabulary recall. Of course, we want to enjoy some ‘palomitas’ and have fun too! Star Wars Club (Year 9-11) “Star Wars is a modern way to tell ancient stories”. The club will be an opportunity to learn more about the Star Wars films, including exploring the stories and characters, going behind the scenes, investigating the design and production of the films and examining the cultural impact of Star Wars. Young Voices (Year 5) Young Voices gives children the opportunity to perform in some of the world’s greatest arenas alongside incredible artists. Being able to do this surrounded by school friends helps build their self-belief and confidence and their ability to communicate as part of a team, which is invaluable. After months of rehearsing, pupils feel a huge sense of achievement and pride in being able to perform at the end and parents are also able to share the experience as part of the audience. The weekly singing www.saintnicholasschool.net
rehearsals help to relieve stress, regulate breathing and brings enormous pleasure. It’s no wonder that young Voices is over subscribed year after year. Bee Bots Club (Year 1) Bee Bots Club is a fantastic way for children to understand coding. The children use their coding skills to input directions onto their Bee Bots to make them move to different places. The children have lots of fun moving them around the different mats with different themes. Pupils also have the opportunity to play the Bee Bot game on the iPad and occasionally also try their hand at controlling the Bee Bots from the iPads. Art and Craft Club (Year 3) In the Year 3 art and craft club the children enjoy a variety of different activities. Recent club projects include making dove mobiles, mixed media collage and jigsaws. www.saintnicholasschool.net

Clubs & Activities Spring Term 2022 lost….. but not always. Some smaller publishers and genre in the art have also made the crossover. In this term we will be looking at the original graphic artists work and then watching their interpretation as a movie. Graphic novels and movies will include: Scott Pilgrim and Dr Horrible’s Sing along Blog. These will be edited to be suitable not only for the age group but also for viewing in a school.
