Thishandbookisaimedmainlyatnewstudents,tohelpyoutosettleinquicklybyexplaininghowtheschool works,andwhotospeaktoifyouhaveanyproblems.Itisalsousefulforʻoldʼstudents,asthemostuptodate guidetotheroutinesandregulationsinplace.

This handbook tells you about the school day: about timings, meals, boarding, behaviour etc - as well as containinglotsofusefulinformationsuchasstafflists,buildingmapsandschoolrules.

ThePurcellSchoolisaveryfriendlyplace; anyonewillbeveryhappytoansweranyquestionsyoumayhave. However,itisalsoaverybusyschool,andsoyoumayfindeverythingthathappenshereabitdaunting,and theflowofinformationmayseemhuge!Donʼtworry! Youwillsoonfindyourwayaround, gettoknowpeople andfeelpartofthePurcellfamily

B1.Houses

For boarders, your Houseisyourhomefromhomewithintheschoolduringtermtime.Wewant youtofeel comfortableandsafeinyourboardinghouse-dobringpicturesandposterswithwhichtoʻpersonaliseʼyour space.Youarewelcometouseyourown(named)bedding(duvetcover,pillowcases)too.Thereisnoschool uniform, so please bring comfortable casual clothes to wear - butpleasebearinmindthatstoragespaceis limitedandwhatcomestoschool,eventuallyhastogobackhome!

EachstudentatThePurcellSchoolisa memberofoneofthreeHouses:

Each House is under the overall pastoral supervision of a Houseparent, assisted by resident Assistant Houseparentsand/oraDayMatronandResidentAssistantGraduate.Allthesestaffareheretosupportyou and will be keen to get to know you. If you are a boarding student, you will have aBoardingMentorfrom within the house pastoral team: your mentor will meet with you regularly, will help you organise your commitments and support you in setting termly targets, enabling you to reflect on your personal development

AllstudentsalsohaveaTutorwhoseesyoufortwoorthreeTutorialperiodseachweekandisresponsiblefor monitoringyouracademicprogressandbalanceofcommitmentsandpromotingyourwelfare.

B2.ChildProtection

TheSchoolworkshardtokeepallstudents safeandtocreateanenvironmentwheretheyfeelsecureenough todiscusstheirconcerns. TheSchooltrainsallstafftorecognisewhenchildrenareinneedofhelp.Ifyouhave anyconcernsaboutthebehaviourofanyadultorotherstudent,youmusttellsomeoneimmediately.Thebest peopletotellareMrSzafranski,MrsMitchell,MrBurns,MsShah,MsWhitty,MrHoskinsorMrBambrough

There are postersallaroundtheschoolwhichexplainhowtocontacttheabovestaff,whoareallpartofthe Safeguarding team, as well the medical team, school counsellor, independent listener andothersourcesof pastoralsupport.However,ALL adultsintheschoolarecommittedtoyourwellbeingandwelfare -andallwill directyoutothebestsourceofsupportforyourindividualneed.

In order to help the school to keep everyone safe, please do not invite anyone into the school without checkingwithanadultfirst.

B3.Anti-BullyingPolicy(includingCyber-Bullying)

B4.MedicalInformation

The School Health Centre is runduringtheday(830am-430pm,Mon-Fri)bytheSchoolNurse,MrsAustin. Aer 4.30pm, Mon-Thurs andatweekends,NurseCarolMorganisavailabletosupportstudentmedicalcare, healthandemotionalwellbeing

EmergencyContact

In the event of illness or injury every effort will be made to contact your parents or guardian. Until your parent/guardian is contacted, the School will take any action required in your best interests Many of the School staff are trained Emergency First Aiders andintheeventofanaccident,appropriateFirstAidwillbe given

In the event of a Day student becoming unwell and requiring to be sent home, parents are contacted immediately and requested to collect their son/daughter as soon as possible. Students are caredforinthe SchoolHealthCentreuntilparentsarrive

You must not go home ill without the authorisation of the Medical Staff, your Houseparents, and informingtheSchoolOffice(duringtheschoolday).

Physiotherapy

Ourvisitingphysiotherapist,DrSUpjohn,attendstheHealthCentreonWednesdays Anystudentmayrequest anappointmentwithherthroughtheSchoolNurse.

Counselling

Our Counsellor, Ms Nicky Morris, works from the Health Centre on four days each week. Any student may requestanappointmentwithherviatheHealthCentreorbycontactingherdirectly

Medication

ItistheSchoolʼspolicythatstudentsdonottakemedicationwithoutsupervision.Nostudentisallowedtobe in possession of prescribed orover-the-countermedicationswithoutpriorassessmentbytheMedicalTeam. Exceptionsareasthmainhalersandepipensforsevereallergies.

Ifneeded,yourparentsshouldsupplytheSchoolwithaspare,namedinhaler/epipenwhichwillthenbestored inaknown,accessibleplaceincaseofanemergency,orforSchooltrips

The Medical Team are permitted to administer some over-the-counter medications on a temporary basis Somemembersoftheteaching/musicstaff/houseparentsareauthorisedtogivesimpleanalgesia(painrelief likeparacetamol)andcoughandthroatremedies

Please note that dietary supplements (such as whey powder, creatine, protein powders) and energy drinksareNOTallowedinschoolunlesswithspecificGPrecommendationandsupervision.

B5.Catering

TheSchoolprovidesafullcateringserviceinassociationwithIFGIndependent.We encouragestudentstoeat a healthy and balanced diet The menus arepublishedeachweekonthecateringnoticeboards Vegetarian andveganoptionsarealwaysavailable.Studentswithspecialdietaryrequirementsarecateredfor.

Thecateringstaffprovideawidechoiceoffood,sothereshouldalwaysbesomethingyoulike Youcanaskto trysomethingifyouarenotsureyoulikeit.

If you haveanyparticulardietaryneedsorallergies,youshouldtalkfirsttotheSchoolNursewhowill liaisewiththeChef.Pleasenotethatweareanut-freeschool;pleaseavoidbringingnutsornutproducts intoschoolwithyouassomestudentsandstaffhavesignificantallergiesandthisputsthematrisk.

Boarders are provided with breakfast, lunch and supper six days a week, with mid-morning and tea-time snacksduringtheweek OnSundays,brunchisserveduntil1230pmandsupperisservedat545pm

Day students who wish to have supper (or breakfast) on an occasional basis must sign up in their boarding-houses well in advance, and at the latest by morning registration of the day in question. Unless previouslynotified,thesemealswillbechargedtoparentsontheschoolbill(£3forsupper) Therewillbeno chargeifstudentsarerequiredtostayforaschoolactivity,suchasaconcertorrehearsal.

The Principal appoints a Student LeadershipTeam eachyear.Together,theseseniorstudentstakealeadin organisingactivitiesandinhelpingtheschooltorunsmoothly.TheymeetwiththePrincipaleveryweekand representthestudentbodyinanydiscussions.

You will be able to develop both academically and socially, becoming confident, well rounded individuals. Avison is ledbyMs Hawkins, Houseparent, and Assistant Houseparent, Mr Caliendo. Ms Bilash is our Resident Boarding Assistant We are all here to support and guide youduringyourtimeinAvison,inacommunitywhereeach studentisvaluedandrespectedforwhotheyare.

C2.Sunley

WelcometoSunley;aHouseforgirls,boardinganddaystudents,fromYears10–12.

MsRoacheisHouseparent,MsFiskistheAssistantHouseparent(MsFiskisAssistantHouseparenttothegirls inbothhouses)andMrsHunteristheDayMatron.WiththesupportofourtwoResidentGraduateAssistants we aim to ensure that you feel valued, listened to and respected in Sunley House. We are committed to creatingawarmandwelcomingcommunitythatisbasedonmutualkindnessandtrust,whereeveryonelooks out for one another while respecting each other's individuality. MrDulovicistheHouseparentandalongwiththeAssistantHouseparents,MsFisk,MrCornish, MsMrozek, and our Day Matron Mrs Mendes da Costa, we will be on hand to provide you with supportandguidance throughout your time at Purcell. We also have a fantastically talented and supportive team of Resident Graduate Assistants who are resident in Ellington We all aim to ensure that students have a secure, comfortable,andwelcomingenvironmentinwhichtoflourish,andwearecommittedtodevelopingthesocial andemotionalskillsofallourstudents OuraimisforstudentstoleaveEllingtonasyoungadultswhovalue andrespecteachother,thenaturalworldandmostimportantly,themselves.

Introduction

The imperative of safeguarding, as outlined in KCSIE September 2022, and applied through The Purcell SchoolʼsSafeguardingandChildProtectionPolicy,underpinsourentireapproachtoboarding Boardinghouse teamsunderstandtheyhaveaʻdutyofcareʼtosafeguardandpromotethewelfareofallstudents,andtowork inpartnershipwithstudents,staff,parents,widerpastoralteamsandexternalagencies,asappropriate,tobest fulfilthisdutyofcareandtoensurethewellbeingandpersonaldevelopmentofeachindividualstudent.

The strong pastoral framework at The Purcell School provides the foundation for students to fulfil their potential, recogniseanddeveloptheirstrengthsindifferentareasoftheirlivesandflourishinthebeliefthat theyarevaluedandrespected.

Our aim at The Purcell School is to ensure that the environment is one where the focus is on praise and encouragement,whereboundariesaresetclearlyandgently Studentsareexpectedtovaluetheschoolrules andknowwhatisexpectedofthem,developinghighstandardsfortheirownbehaviour.Ultimately,wehope thatallindividualswillleaveThePurcellSchoolasyoungadultswhovalueandrespecteachother,thenatural worldandmostimportantly,themselves.

Expectations

The boarding house is your ʻhome from homeʼ and all members of the house community need to work togethersothateveryoneissafe,andcanthriveinalltheydo.Thismeanshelpingtomakesurethateveryone

is able to get enough sleep, gettheiracademicworkcompletedtoanexcellentstandard,fulfiltheirmusical commitmentsandresponsibilities,andhaveappropriaterestandrelaxationtime.

WhereHousesanctionsareneeded,therefore,theygenerallyrefertoʻanti-socialʼbehavioursuchastoomuch noise,ornoiseandmovingaroundthehouseatinappropriatetimes,ormess.Thesebehavioursgetintheway ofotherboarders beingabletothrive,andthesanctionsact,primarily,asareminderoftheexpectationthat all boarders have a role to play in creating a collaborative communal environment, which is a privilege to share.

At all times, courtesy, respect and consideration towards fellow students, and towards all members of the adult staff teams is expected. Deliberate unkindness, rudeness and disrespect is never acceptable. House sanctions will generally involve ʻpaying backʼ in some way, such as tidyingupcommunalareas,oralossof privileges,suchasbeingaskedtogotobedearlier,orbeingconfinedtotheschoolcampus

D2.Travellingonandoffsite

Students in the Sixth Form have more flexibility than students lower down the schoolwithregardstotheir movements on and off site. Sixth Form students may beallowedtosignoutofschoolatcertaintimesaer school,providingtheymaintainagoodbehaviouralandacademicrecord.

● SixthFormstudentswhohavepassedtheirdrivingtestandneedtousetheirvehicletotraveltoand fromschoolmustseekpermissionfromthePrincipalviathePrincipalʼsPAbeforebringingtheirvehicle ontotheschoolsite.

● Anystudentbringingavehicleonsitemustleavetheirkeysintheboardinghousewhentheysigninin themorning,andmayonlycollectthemwhensigningoutattheendoftheday

● SixthFormDaystudentsmayleaveschoolaertheirfinalcommitmentoftheday(whichincludesall academic and musical commitments) and must sign out of their Boarding House and leave the premises.

E1.Principlesandexpectations

● The Purcell School encourages the good behaviour of its students at all times. The schoolattaches great importance to courtesy, integrity, good manners, good discipline and respectfortheneedsof others.

TheSchoolRules(seeAppendix1)andtheschoolʼsAnti-BullyingPolicymakeclearourexpectationsin thisregard.

● Theguidingprincipleisthattheschooltrustsstudentstoknowhowtobehaveandtoactatalltimesin their own best interests and those of the whole school community Onlywhenstudentsbreachthis trustwillsanctionsberequired.

● When sanctions are unavoidable, students and parents have the right toexpecttheschooltoapply this policy fairly However, this does not mean that sanctions will invariably be the same for each offence, as there may be differing circumstances which may be taken into account. In otherwords, everyincidentwillbeviewedonitsownmerits,usingthispolicyasguidance

● ThePurcellSchooldoesnotusephysicalpunishmentofanysort.Thereisnocorporalpunishmentand nopunishmentisintendedtohumiliateorintimidateanystudent.

Rewards

Studentswhodoparticularlygoodworkrelativetotheirability,ormakeapositivecontributiontothelifeof the school, receive aCommendation TheCommendationcardisissuedbyateacher,TutororHouseparent; thestudentshouldtakeittothePrincipalforrecording,beforetakingithometoshowtohisorherparents.

At the end of the school year, prizes areawardedforachievementinacademicsubjects,incommendations awarded,inmusicandforgeneralcontributiontothelifeoftheschool.

ExpectationsandSanctions

The Schoolʼs Behaviour Management Strategy provides a range ofsanctionsinagradualscaleofincreasing severitydesignedtoencouragethestudenttowardsanacceptablelevelofattainmentorbehaviour Possible sanctionsforminoroffencesorpooracademicworkincludedetentions,gating(i.e.notbeingallowedtoleave theschoolpremisesor,forboarders,thehouse),academicreportorsupervisedprivatestudy.

Seriousmisbehaviour,orpersistentacademicindiscipline,mayresultinaSchoolDetention,whichtakesplace aerschool,duringʻfreetimeʼ. ThestudentwillalsobeinterviewedbytheVice-Principaltodiscusstheoffence andtheirfutureconduct

Suspension

Seriousorrepeateddisciplinaryoffencesmayresultinthestudentʼssuspensionforbetweentwodaysandtwo weeks,andafinalwarningmayalsobeissued Whilesuspended,thestudentisexpectedtoremainathome during the school day, and work will, whenever possible, be set. A suspended student may not attendany schoolfunction(eg concert)orsocialevent (Astudentmayalsobesuspendedwhilstaninvestigationintoan allegedseriousincidenttakesplace.)

Followingasuspension,thestudent(andifpossiblehisorherparentsorguardian)willberequiredtoattend aninterviewwithamemberoftheschoolSeniorLeadershipsTeamtodiscusshis/herfutureconduct

Expulsion

In the most extreme circumstances the Principal reserves the right to expel a girl or boy from the school. Although the studentʼs best interests will be taken into consideration, the interests of the whole school communityandthenatureoftheoffencewillbeofparticularsignificance Insuchcircumstances,parentshave arightofappealtotheschoolgovernors.

ThePrincipalisrequiredtoactfairlyandinaccordancewiththeprinciplesofnaturaljustice ThePrincipalwill makeadecisiononacase-by-casebasis,willexpelastudentfromtheSchoolonlyasalastresortandwillnot expelastudentotherthaningravecircumstances.

Withdrawalofrighttoboard

For repeated boarding offences, or where the continued presence ofthestudentisfelttobedetrimentalto good order in the House, a boarding place may be withdrawn either temporarily or permanently at the Principalʼsdiscretion.

● Asmallnumberofyoungpeoplequicklydevelopsomeformofdependencyondrugs.

● Involvement in drug culture tends to draw young people awayfrommoreworthwhileactivitiesand oenresultsinafallingawayofacademicperformanceandachievementsinotherareas

E4.ICTAcceptableUsePolicy

The Schoolʼs ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Acceptable Use Policy governs the use by students of the Schoolʼs computer network and any computer and peripheral equipment connected to it togetherwiththeuseofanystand-aloneICTequipment.

The use of the Schoolʼs network and equipment isaprivilegeandnotaright. TheSchooltakesreasonable steps to control and monitor the use of the internet andotherelectronicmeansofcommunicationwithout unnecessarily or disproportionately compromising the privacy of boarders or their ability to communicate with their parents, guardians or outside agencies The School will thereforedetermineappropriateuseand monitoruseraccountsandfileserverspaceasnecessary. Inappropriateuse,includingcontraveningtherules and conditions, will result in withdrawal of the privilege; students should be aware of the personal and academicconsequencesthatmayensuefromsuchawithdrawal. Failuretoadheretothispolicywillalsobe regardedasabreachofSchoolRulesandmaythereforeresultinothersanctions.

1.Attendance

1. You must register every school day by 8.40am latest in Houses. It is the schoolʼs legalobligationto record your attendance in this way If you arrive late in the morning, youmuststillsigninto your boardinghouse-asthisiskeycentralrecordofyourpresenceinschool.

2. Aernoonregistrationtakesplaceinthedininghallatlunchtime,12.40-1.30pm;ifyoutakeanearlyor latelunchduetocommitmentsandmissregistrationyoumustsigninatyourboardinghouse
