What was the inspiration behind Hotel Flamingo?
I watched my daughter playing with her toy animals, putting them to bed and feeding thembasically treating them like her guests - and I thought it was a brilliant starting point for a story. Also, I live in London, which is an incredibly inclusive city, and every day is a chance to meet new people from all over the world without travelling very far at all The planet feels much smaller and more welcoming when you live in a place like this, and I suppose Hotel Flamingo is my attempt to show the positive aspects to inclusivity and diversity
Have you always been an animal lover? Do you have a favourite animal? Yes! Always. Lemurs are my favourite animals and I was so excited to put one in the book.
Which of the customers from Hotel Flamingo would you most like to meet and which one would you find most difficult to look after? I would love to meet Mrs Turpington, the tortoise I think she'd be wonderful And probably crocodile guests would be tough! Where would they sleep? In the pool? EEK!
We are so excited to hear that there are three more books in the series. What is next in store for Anna and the hotel? So much! The Hotel is on the up, and the King and Queen Penguin decide to visit for their holiday. Obviously, this is big news, but the penguins are staying in summer, and keeping Antarctic inhabitants happy in the middle of a heatwave is no mean feat! And of course Mr Ruffian, owner of the Glitz Hotel is up to no good, wanting Anna to f Interview given to Books For Topics, Feb 2019

Rosa has come from the city to live with Grandma Nan in the wilds of Big Sky Mountain. And what surprises are in store for her! Grandma Nan is not exactly an ordinary grandma, and Big Sky Mountain is like nowhere Rosa has dreamed about before. Grandma Nan lives in an old wooden cabin with Albert the moose and Little Pig the pygmy owl, and spends every day out on adventures. From canoeing down rapids to making friends with the local animals, life never stays still for long on Big Sky Mountain! An exhilarating new series set in the great outdoors, from HOTEL FLAMINGO author Alex Milway for readers from 5-8 years old. https://alexmilway.bandcamp.com/releases Big Sky Playlist
Funny and charming; Alex Milway has made me want to fly right into Big Sky Mountain myself. Andy Shepherd, author of The Boy Who Grew Dragons
I want to go to Big Sky Mountain! It’s the rugged wilderness, but much softened by a comfy bear who’s a travelling salesman, a moody architect hare and some busy builder beavers who still have to learn about how to get along with the rest of the community. Sarah McIntyre, illustrator of Pugs of the Frozen North
As a HUGE fan of feisty grandmothers, I LOVED Grandma Nan in Big Sky Mountain! Wise, capable and fearless, she is the perfect role model for her granddaughter, Rosa. A wild adventure with an important message, bravo! Sophy Henn, author and illustrator of Bad Nana

The Warrior Cats series is so active and adventurous with lots of fabulous tales involved in it. There are over 60 books in the Warrior Cats series altogether! These books tell the tales of four clans: ThunderClan, the main good clan; ShadowClan, the evil clan; WindClan who are also good, and StarClan, their ancestors. There are another two clans called SkyClan and BloodClan which come in the later series. There are also lots of ancient tribes like the Tribe Of Rushing Water.
The books tell the stories of these wild cats who have shared the forest for many years, according to the laws laid down by their ancestors. But these warrior cats face a dark prophecy that threatens not only the warrior Clans but the whole forest.

Brightpaw's Prey
by Adriana, 4H
As the fiery sun slipped into the misty daylight, Brightpaw trotted down to her mentor and licked her white chest in excitement Once the patrol got to Snakerocks, Brightpaw’s eyes glittered in pride. The cats separated and looked around. Several heartbeats passed, but no sign of danger.
“Have you scented anything yet?” Longtail meowed, still seeking answers. Whitestorm slowly shook his white, wedge shaped head, and so did the apprentices “Wait what’s this?” gasped Swiftpaw Near some brambles, a half eaten rabbit lay there, motionless Brightpaw gasped and sniffed the grey brown creature
“It doesn’t smell of anything familiar,” mewed Brightpaw, her eyes widened in shock.
“Whoever they are, they won’t bother to eat their own prey!” spat Longtail, disgusted by the improper attitude of the unknown attacker.
“We should tell Bluestar, she’ll know what to do,” suggested Whitestorm Longtail and Brightpaw gathered a few juniper berries and some catmint They were the only signs of herbs left in Snakerocks Then, the four cats sensibly padded back to camp, trotting to Bluestar’s den.
“Bluestar?” asked Brightpaw, stepping forward. Bluestar’s ice blue gaze sent a shiver down her spine. “We found evidence.” The four cats dipped their heads respectfully before the leader came out. Bluestar nodded and Whitestorm began to explain A shadow split through half of Bluestar’s face
“How strange Is it possible that it could be ShadowClan?” she wondered out loud
The two apprentices exchanged an uncomfortable glance “That’s impossible I went on morning patrol and scented ShadowClan and the other Clans far from Snakerocks,” Longtail argued. Brightpaw shivered at the thought of being attacked by surprise.
“I’ll need to double the patrols,” Bluestar meowed. Brightpaw gazed at the never ending horizon as Longtail nodded at his leader “Come on, let’s eat I’m so hungry, I could eat a badger,” rumbled Brightpaw Swiftpaw liked the thought of crunching the small bones of a plump, juicy vole “Me too,” he replied. They reached the fresh kill pile and grabbed one each so they could finally rest and fill their empty stomachs, like bottomless pits. The feast energised them, and they licked their whiskers to clean off the rest. Like a bird swooping down to get some prey, Brightpaw pounced onto Swiftpaw and bit viciously but playfully onto his scruff Swiftpaw let out a small growl of laughter, joining in, and the two cats wrestled together in the tree brown mud
During World Book Week, we had a special visit from M G Leonard and Sam Sedgeman, the authors of the ‘Adventures On Trains’ series of mystery books First, they explained about their inspiration to write M G Leonard’s son was interested in trains, but there were no fictional books about trains That’s when she partnered up with one of her work friends called Sam who just happened to love trains. After that, they showed us how a train
works and we even got to see a real steam engine working. Sam explained how coal is put into the steam train’s furnace to create steam to move the train’s wheels.
Next, we all got to take part in planning a murder mystery. We had to choose a victim, suspects and a motive, as well as some red herring clues to throw the detectives off along the way. It was so much fun, and Year 4 immediately went away to plan our own mystery stories! We can’t wait to read the next book in the series, set in the Arctic Circle.
The fancy, red, long locomotive starts its last journey on the rusty train tracks Hot, black smoke fills the sky like a bonfire All you can hear is the whoo whoo and chug chug as it moves The driver pulls the string to ring the big bell

This book is all about a girl called Matilda Her parents are horrid and she finds some powers which she uses to stand up to the bullies in her life like Miss Trunchbull and her parents It is funny when she mixes her mum's platinum hair dye into her dad's violet hair tonic bottle which makes her father have blond hair just like her mum's!

Dog Man - For Whom the Ball Rolls by Dav Pilkey
I recommend this book because there is lots and lots of funny text in it. For example, "Does doggy-woggy want a bally-wally?" There are also lots of heroes, as well as kindness, advice and helping people.
I like it because it entertains me a lot. When I am sad, it always makes me feel better.
I find it hard to pick my favourite characters because they are all really good. Go ahead and pick up a Dog Man book!

Asha and the Spirit Bird by Jasbinder Bilan
I would recommend Asha and the spirit bird because it uses very good descriptive language and it is an adventure story. I really like adventure stories! It also uses show, not tell to describe the feelings and it has no pictures but the writing forms a picture in your head.
Asha lives on the family farm with her mother in India. When the money her father sends stops suddenly, a wicked aunt arrives. She’s determined to seize the property–and the treasure rumoured to be hidden on the land.
Guided by a majestic bird which Asha believes to be the spirit of her grandmother, she and her best friend Jeevan embark on a journey to the city, across the Himalayas, to find her father and save her home…
The Primrose Railway Children by Jacqueline Wilson

I would recommend this book for 9 to 11 year olds because this book contains a good story plot, tons of great writing techniques, and is so fun! You would be hooked on to the story, and glued to the pages In English, this might help as a story plot, or you could capture one of many amazing phrases I hope you enjoy the book!

The Soup Movement by Ben Davis
I would recommend a book called The Soup Movement because, first of all, it was by far the best book I have ever read. It is about a boy called Jordan who gets ill and makes a best friend Sadly, his friend dies but Jordan recovers from his illness and moves house.
Later in the book, he hands out soup to homeless people and makes friends with them. But I’ll save the rest of the book for when you read it. Although this book is sad, it really made me think about what is important and how we should look after other people
I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai
This book is an amazing story about a girl who fought to go to school. I really enjoyed this because it made me understand how some girls can't go to school.
Malala loved to go to school, but when the Taliban took over her country, she couldn't attend anymore. She was forced to stay home to cook and clean. Malala knew it wasn't right. She knew one voice could change the world. She was shot by the Taliban because she spoke up. However, she made an awesome recovery and studied at Oxford University. I think this story shows you can do anything and fight for what is right.

The Pink Mermaid
Amelia, 1N
One sunny morning, Amy was on the beach. She was playing with her pink, shiny bucket and blue spade. She was making a castle and she splashed in the gentle, blue sea. Suddenly, Amy saw a sparkling, glittering rainbow tail. She couldn't believe her eyes! A mermaid was in the sea with her! Amy went underwater to look. It was a real mermaid and it was stuck in a net.
At first, Amy got some water to bring to the mermaid. She got some scissors to chop the net but it was too stuck to cut. Amy tried to untangle the net but it didn't work. The sun was very hot and the mermaid was beginning to burn. "I give up!" Amy said.
Suddenly, she had an idea. She put a sun hat on to protect the mermaid's skin and she got some sun cream to protect her skin too.
The mermaid was feeling sad. She was crying. Amy was worried. She didn't know what to do. "I need more sun cream for the mermaid," said Amy so she ran to get some.
Amy shouted and shouted for help but no one came so she put some salty water on the pink mermaid. She saw a lifeguard and dashed over to him. Frantically, they went together to the mermaid and they heaved the pretty, pink mermaid into the yellow boat.
Amy took the mermaid to the salty blue sea. She was sad that she had to let go of her mermaid but happy that she was free. She hoped that she would see her friend again.
Dolphin Rescue
Aanya, 1N
One bright, sunny morning, Daffodil ran to the soft beach. Waves were hitting the hard, grey rocks and the waves were light blue. Daffodil ran to join her pals. The sand was tickly and bright golden. Suddenly she saw something unusual. She grabbed her rainbow binoculars. Her vision was blurry so she crept to investigate what it was.
As she crept closer and closer, first she thought it was a black, red and yellow fish. But when she skipped closer, she was astonished. It was a dolphin stuck in between some cans!
Daffodil nearly forgot what she was going to do. Luckily, she remembered to pour water on the dolphin and she stroked him carefully. The dolphin's eyes blinked softly to show he understood that she was trying to help.
Daffodil shouted for help. She was lonely and sad that no one could hear her. Carefully, she took the metal cans from around the dolphin. On the beach, she found a brown and grey boat, wrecked by a storm. She dragged the blue bottlenose dolphin onto the wrecked boat. She heaved the dolphin into the salty, blue sea.
Afterwards, she dashed to her parents and told them the story. Her parents hugged Daffodil. She was happy she had saved the dolphin but sad that she was going to miss her friend.
A Day at the Beach Maia, 2B
Camilla was going to the beach. She was wearing blue, denim shorts over the top of a purple swimming costume. Her golden hair fell down like a waterfall and her eyes sparkled and twinkled. Beside her trotted her fluffy, white dog, Eloise. Camilla could smell fish and chips wafting through the breeze. The sun shone like a golden coin, almost blinding her. Candy floss clouds twinkled and leaped across the sapphire sky as the turquoise waves shone.
Camilla could hear blue tits and robins tweeting and the cawing and crowing of magpies and gulls. She could see trees swaying in the light, warm breeze.
Camilla saw a large rock in her way. She was going to have to jump over it. "I can do this!" she said as she tried to do a big jump.
"Ow!" she cried as she fell to the ground. Her mum came running over.
"What's the matter?" she said.
"I hurt my leg," replied Camilla, tearfully. Her mum fetched a rough plaster which they put onto her knee.
"I know, let's get an ice cream, " said Camilla's mum. They walked to the ice cream van and chose a chocolate double whip. Happily, they walked back home into the sunset, munching on their cold, sweet ice cream.
Beach Walking
Darcey, 2B
May skipped happily to the beach. The sun was blazing on the sapphire sea, and May's feet sank into the scorching, soft, velvet sand. May could hear the chestnutbrown Canada geese calling on the emerald grass.
May had midnight hair, as black as the night sky. Her eyes were marine blue and she had beautiful ruby, red lips that glistened in the summer sun. She was wearing a bright yellow t-shirt and emerald-green shorts. With her, May had her golden retriever, Amber whose soft, silky fur shone.
May and Amber looked around them for pink and aqua coloured shells. The fluffy clouds drifted calmly in the bright sky overhead as the snow white seagulls glided in the cosy, gentle breeze. As they flew, the noisy gulls squawked non-stop.
On the shore, the bubbly foam raced and broke on the wet sand, leaving tiny pools of water where May and Amber could splash and play.
Behind her, May heard children laughing loudly. She joined in with a giggle.
"Lunchtime!" called her mum and dad.
"OK," replied May, walking back towards them.
For lunch, they had crispy, golden sausage rolls, sandwiches and sweet apple juice.

Excitedly and energetically, the red fish flicked, twisted and looped, playing hide and seek with Joy, the snow-white dog, who yelped playfully as he bounded along.
Coming to a sudden stop, the tiny fish gaped up at the vast waterfall before him. Right at the top, he could just make out a huge archway, built of stone. "I'll never make it up there. It's huge!" sighed the little red fish.
Roaring and rumbling, the rushing waterfall sprayed fiercely, thundering deafeningly to the rocky shore below. Desperately, more desperately, Lucky Carp leaped and leaped. Higher, higher, higher he leaped, trying to get up the glistening waterfall to the beautiful archway above and then falling, falling, falling again.
The autumn breeze slipped away. Strong amber faded away into nothing but silvery snow and bare trees. Day after day, night after night, the mountain broke his icy fingers out as the tiny dog pushed and heaved helplessly, trying to get a pile of heavy rocks to the base of the frozen waterfall to help his friend.
Spring came. Deep pearls of snow dissolved, sliding off the pure, green trees. Vivid, green leaves sprang up as the silvery ice broke into turquoise, rushing water.
Hardly daring to breathe, Lucky Carp leaped, endlessly determined. Staring at the archway, knowing he could do it, he just kept on leaping, using the piles of rocks built by his friend to push him upwards as the waterfall growled, rumbled and rushed deafeningly. At last, as he leaped through the arch, the blue sky exploded into scarlet and crimson.
Down below, Joy watched the explosion and realised Lucky Carp had disappeared. His eyes widened and grew misty blue with sadness. His heart pounded as he realised he would never see his friend again. His head drooped as he trudged slowly away.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed above him. Joy heard a noise - a very loud noise. Cautiously, he turned.
Right before his eyes, he saw a dragon a shining red, scaly dragon with deep, trusting eyes which seemed very familiar. It hovered above the ground, its scales flashing in the light of the setting sun. Joy stepped back in shock, but looking more closely, he gasped. The dragon was Lucky Carp! Excitedly, Joy yelped as he clambered onto the back of the glimmering dragon. Together, they flew higher and higher into the soft rose coloured clouds. Lucky Carp swooped and swayed in the air and then they gracefully glided off into the shining sunset the perfect pair: a dragon and a dog.

A young boy waits anxiously for his father to return from
My heart hammered as I sprinted to the door. Dad should've been home hours ago! I paced backwards and forwards. What if he was stuck?
Boom! The sun was covered by a rumbling, grumbling storm, edging its way towards me. Desperately, I rushed to the window, waiting. Just waiting.
A sudden, sharp knock made my heart pound. Could it be?
But no not my dad, just the postman. Corinna, 4K
I felt suspended in fear as I pressed my face against the glass. Shimmers of hope pricked like thorns. In the distance, two dark figures lurked on the hill. I wanted to dash out and shout to them, "Where is my father? Why is he not home yet?"
A small tear rolled down my cheek as a shudder ran through me. Something felt different today. Something was wrong. Madeleine, 4H
But wait! A faint silhouette was coming down the road; was it him? Was this what I had been waiting for all this time? Was he hurt? All these questions flooded into my mind as I squinted to get a better look through the glass.
I held my breath, hoping against hope, and then let out a deep sigh of disappointment. It wasn't my dad after all.
Time passed. Outside the door, a quiet footstep began to grow louder and louder a familiar shadow. Then the figure turned towards the door: it was dad! I sighed in relief, letting all my worries slip through my fingers. I ran towards the door to hug him.
But even at that moment, I knew the worry would just begin again tomorrow, and the next day...

The Storm Holly SW, 5S
Sunken. Hidden beneath the depths of the sea. Raging and rocking, the ship, carrying twelve strong men, swerved violently. The jet black sea and midnight sky merged into one, sucking them into a vacuum, drowning them in blackness.
Faces white with terror, drained of all colour, the crew watched with unadulterated fear as the waves continuously washed over them. Biting and gnashing at their ship, the waves loomed over the crew as they stared in horror at the huge, threatening hulk of water. Darting and dodging, the sailors moved frantically, flailing their arms in panic.
"Mayday! Mayday!" they screamed, but it was no use; the water was blocking all communication.
Fear walked on board that day: fear prickled at the crew ' s hearts, and fear was unleashed like a ruthless monster. There was nothing the crew could do; they stayed absolutely still. Silent. On and on, wave after wave, the vicious, icy cold water rained over the ship's bow, hurling itself at the ship, creeping into every nook and cranny of this tattered, torn boat.
Lightning whipped the ship, torturing the vessel with streaks of electricity pelting down from ominous, stormy clouds. Pushing through the titanium force of the waves, the ship tilted sideways to avoid another crackle of deadly lightning. This would end someday, wouldn't it?
Closing in on the ship, the waves towered above, trapping the ship like a mouse in a cage. The waves lifted the ship up and down, again and again and again. Fresh, salty sea air filled their lungs as they clutched the rails, sick with terror. This was not what they had signed up for. Would they ever get out of this looming nightmare?

ek:TheTempest vision of the glorious dream so that I yearned to sleep once more.
I waved and waved and waved 'til the boat was out of sight, and I could wave no more. "Farewell, great Master! I wish you calm seas and beautiful skies " My mind took me back to when my former master was filled with hatred for the owner of that boat; hatred as cold as that foul beast Caliban's evil soul. I had been forced to sink that boat to the bottom of the ocean...but not to harm a single soul. Now I called out my fond goodbyes to the same ship, which carried my former master, happy on board.
Skipping through the trees, I danced; finally happy and free. The island was like a playground: low hanging vines were like skipping ropes, the rushing waterfall was like a slide I was overjoyed to be free! And yet, something still felt unfinished. I had helped my master to forgive his enemy and now I must forgive mine. Reaching Caliban's cave, I hesitated "The only thing to fear is fear itself," I told myself and knocked on the stone door...

An overpowering gust of wind left me unsteady as I rushed through the cloud. The sweet sun beamed down, its gaze making joy spring inside me.
I began to whistle a swift tune, sounding like an elegant bird, without a care in the world. Yet, I knew this was a dream. This happened often.
My head hit a branch as I awoke. A peaceful breeze brought back the faint
As I lay in the mass of branches and leaves, I remembered my dream of freedom My mind trailed away as I drifted into sleep, longing to dream once again.

Good riddance to my captor, thou beastly man!
Thou hast done me wrong when I did thee well! Thou made me thy slave. No freedom for me!
I was left, cold and alone. You betrayed me and left me with nothing.
My time is now; my glory is here! I am coming for thee! Just you wait and see...

Caliban is very ugly and hairy. He is mean, green and scary. He walks slowly and loudly. He is very bumpy and he is a giant. He has got long, slimy, rough legs. He has two white horns and only two teeth Caliban lives on his own and he is so lonely. No one likes him because he is always so rude.
Claudia, 1E
Caliban is green, bumpy and ugly. He looks hideous and scary. He behaves very badly and he is unkind. He is monstrous and horrible

The stars who twinkle Stream who runs Whisper thy secrets That dance along the breeze
They reach every corner Thy melodies that birds sing, Tuned to perfection, Accompanied by the lap of the serene sea.
Air of salt, Galleons pass by Lush green, Motherly shade thy trees give.
Riches I shall seek, Though nought I find. Hope I shall reach for, Though never grasp.
This island's mine!

I can see a blue, sparkling waterfall. I can see green leaves, swaying in the breeze. I can hear the seagulls screeching whilst they fly through the air. I can hear the rough, tough waves crashing against the rocks I can feel the soft sand on my feet. I can feel the splash of the waterfall. I can taste sweet fruits in my mouth and smell lovely coconut. I can hear the seagulls squawking loudly in the sky. I can hear the waterfall splashing down to the ground.

On my magical island, I feel the soft grass brushing against my legs. I can see a cave in the middle of a mysterious island. I can hear a gushing waterfall. I can smell yummy, delicious food and taste hot stew.
