Thishandbookisaimedmainlyatnewstudents,tohelpyoutosettleinquicklybyexplaininghowtheschool works,andwhotospeaktoifyouhaveanyproblems.Itisalsousefulforʻoldʼstudents,asthemostuptodate guidetotheroutinesandregulationsinplace.

3.PASTORALMATTERS

HOUSES

Forboarders,yourHouseisyourhomefromhomewithintheschoolduringtermtime.Wewant youtofeel comfortableandsafeinyourboardinghouse-dobringpicturesandposterswithwhichtoʻpersonaliseʼyour space.Youarewelcometouseyourown(named)bedding(duvetcover,pillowcases)too.Thereisnoschool uniform,sopleasebringcomfortablecasualclothestowear-butpleasebearinmindthatstoragespaceis limitedandwhatcomestoschool,eventuallyhastogobackhome!

EachHouseisundertheoverallpastoralsupervisionofaHouseparent,assistedbyresidentAssistant Houseparentsand/oraDayMatronandotherstaffwholivewithintheboardinghouses Allthesestaffarehere tosupportyouandwillbekeentogettoknowyou.Ifyouareaboardingstudent,youwillhaveaBoarding Mentorfromwithinthehousepastoralteam:yourmentorwillmeetwithyouregularly,willhelpyouorganise yourcommitmentsandwillhelpresolveanyclashesorissueswithanyaspectofyourlifeatPurcell.

AllstudentsalsohaveaTutorwhoseesyoufortwoorthreeTutorialperiodseachweekandisresponsiblefor monitoringyouracademicprogressandbalanceofcommitmentsandpromotingyourwelfare.

CHILDPROTECTION

TheSchoolworkshardtokeepallchildrensafeandtocreateanenvironmentwheretheyfeelsecureenough todiscusstheirconcerns TheSchooltrainsallstafftorecognisewhenchildrenareinneedofhelp Ifyouhave anyconcernsaboutthebehaviourofanyadultorotherstudent,youmusttellsomeoneimmediately.The bestpeopletotellareMrSzafranski,LadyCayley,MrBurns,MsShah,MsWhitty,MrHoskinsorMr Bambrough.

Therearepostersallaroundtheschoolwhichexplainhowtogetholdofthesepeople,aswellthemedical team,counsellor,independentlistenerandothersourcesofpastoralsupport.However,ALL adultsinthe schoolarecommittedtoyourwellbeingandwelfare -andallwilldirectyoutothebestsourceofsupportfor yourindividualneed.

Inordertohelptheschooltokeepeveryonesafe,pleasedonotinviteanyoneintotheschoolwithout checkingwithanadultfirst.

MEDICALINFORMATION

TheSchoolHealthCentreisrunduringtheday(8.30-16.30,Mon-Fri)bytheSchoolNurse,MrsAustin. Aer 4.30pm,Mon-Thursandatweekends,NurseCarolMorganisavailabletosupportstudentmedicalcare,health andemotionalwellbeing.

EmergencyContact

Intheeventofillnessorinjuryeveryeffortwillbemadetocontactyourparentsorguardian.Untilyour parent/guardianiscontacted,theSchoolwilltakeanyactionrequiredinyourbestinterests Manyofthe SchoolstaffaretrainedEmergencyFirstAidersandintheeventofanaccident,appropriateFirstAidwillbe given

IntheeventofaDaystudentbecomingunwellandrequiringtobesenthome,parentsarecontacted immediatelyandrequestedtocollecttheirson/daughterassoonaspossible.Studentsarecaredforinthe SchoolHealthCentreuntilparentsarrive.

YoumustnotgohomeillwithouttheauthorisationoftheMedicalStaff,yourHouseparents,and informingtheSchoolOffice(duringtheschoolday).

Physiotherapy:Ourvisitingphysiotherapist,DrSUpjohn,attendstheHealthCentreonWednesdays.Any studentmayrequestanappointmentwithherthroughtheSchoolNurse.

Counselling:OurCounsellor,MsNickyMorris,worksfromtheHealthCentreonfourdayseachweekandcan seestudentsinstrictconfidence AnystudentmayrequestanappointmentwithherviatheHealthCentreor bycontactingherdirectly.

Medication

ItistheSchoolʼspolicythatstudentsdonottakemedicationwithoutsupervision.Nostudentisallowedtobe inpossessionofprescribedorover-the-countermedicationswithoutpriorassessmentbytheMedicalTeam. Exceptionsareasthmainhalersandepipensforsevereallergies

Ifneeded,yourparentsshouldsupplytheSchoolwithaspare,namedinhaler/epipenwhichwillthenbestored inaknown,accessibleplaceincaseofanemergency,orforSchooltrips

TheMedicalTeamarepermittedtoadministersomeover-the-countermedicationsonatemporarybasis Somemembersoftheteaching/musicstaff/houseparentsareauthorisedtogivesimpleanalgesia(painrelief likeparacetamol)andcoughandthroatremedies.

Pleasenotethatdietarysupplements(suchaswheypowder,creatine,proteinpowders)areNOTallowedin schoolunlesswithspecificGPrecommendationandsupervision.

CATERING

TheSchoolprovidesafullcateringserviceinassociationwithIFGIndependent.We encouragestudentstoeat ahealthyandbalanceddiet.Themenusarepublishedeachweekonthecateringnoticeboards.Vegetarian andveganoptionsarealwaysavailable.Studentswithspecialdietaryrequirementsarecateredfor.

Thecateringstaffprovideawidechoiceoffood,sothereshouldalwaysbesomethingyoulike. Youcanaskto trysomethingifyouarenotsureyoulikeit

Ifyouhaveanyparticulardietaryneedsorallergies,youshouldtalkfirsttotheSchoolNursewhowill liaisewiththeChef.

Pleasenotethatweareanut-freeschool;pleaseavoidbringingnutsornutproductsintoschoolwith youassomestudentsandstaffhavesignificantallergiesandthisputsthematrisk.

Boardersareprovidedwithbreakfast,lunchandsuppersixdaysaweek,withmid-morningandtea-time snacksduringtheweek.OnSundays,brunchisserveduntil12.30pmandsupperisservedat5.45pmand 6.00pm.

Daystudentsmayelecttotakeluncheverydayaswellasmid-morningandtea-timesnacks.Alternatively,day studentsmaybringapackedlunch.

Daystudentswhowishtohavesupper(orbreakfast)onanoccasionalbasismustsignupintheir boarding-houseswellinadvance,andatthelatestbymorningregistrationofthedayinquestion.Unless previouslynotified,thesemealswillbechargedtoparentsontheschoolbill(£3forsupper).Therewillbeno chargeifstudentsarerequiredtostayforaschoolactivity,suchasaconcertorrehearsal.
