Why did you want to become a poet?

I wanted to become a poet because I love words! A poem is a really good way of playing with words and being creative, and with a poem you can accomplish something amazing in a relatively short time. I also love performing, and poetry is a really good way of getting to perform your own work in front of an audience. I also enjoy making people laugh, and poetry can be a good way of doing that!

What's the best thing about being a poet?

The best thing is definitely getting the chance to visit schools to perform poetry and run workshops. I love using poetry to inspire people and bring a bit of joy to the world.

What's the hardest thing about being a poet?

The hardest thing is probably that being a poet means I am self-employed. This means that if I get sick I don't get any money. It is also hard sometimes to come up with ideas, which can be frustrating. Being a poet also means I never got to fulfil my childhood ambition of being a professional bear wrestler.

How long does it take you to write a poem?

It can take quite a short time, which is why I like it! A first draft of a poem can take anywhere between ten minutes and an hour. However, the editing process is where the real work begins, and that can take a lot longer. Sometimes days. It still doesn't take as long as a story though.

Which poets did you read when you were a child? Interestingly I didn't read poetry much as a child. I discovered it as an adult. I do remember Michael Rosen visiting my school though, which I absolutely adored. We bought one of his cassettes and listened to it in the car every day. In case you are wondering what a cassette is, it's basically something from the Stone Age that you put in a slot that enables you to hear stuff. Ahh, the Stone Age. Good memories.

What is your favourite poem?

My favourite poem that I have written is called 'I Don't Like Poetry', and can be viewed on my website. My favourite poem by another poet is probably 'On Marriage' by Kahlil Gibran. This is a grown-up poem, about getting married. Some of you might do that one day. Some of you might not - either is OK.

Is there anything you would love to write a poem about, but haven't managed to yet?

I would love to write a poem about lemons, but I haven't done it yet. I would also quite like to write about: ostriches, Papua New Guinea, aubergines, King Louis 5th, zips, and radiators, but I haven't written about any of these things. Maybe some of you could give it a go.

I Don't Like Poetry

I don’t like similes. Every time I try to think of one my brain feels like a vast, empty desert; my eyes feel like raisins floating in an ocean; my fingers feel like sweaty sausages.

I don’t like metaphors. Whenever I attempt them a hammer starts beating in my chest; lava starts bubbling in my veins; zombies have a fight in my stomach.

I don’t like alliteration. We learnt about it in school but it’s seriously, stupendously silly; definitely drastically difficult; terribly, troublingly tricky.

I don’t like onomatopoeia. I wish I could blow it up with a ZAP! and a BANG! and a CRASH!; a BOOM! and a CLANG! and a POW!; a CLASH! and a BAM! and a THUD!

And I don’t like repetition

I don’t like repetition

I don’t like repetition...

Joshua Seigal

My favourite poetry is by Joshua Seigal and is called LittleLemur Laughing.

I love lemurs which is why this is my favourite poem I think it is exciting and cheeky because of its alliteration.

A lot of Josh's poems are shown on a page in an interesting way. For example, in the shape of an apple.

Eragon was tangled in tough weeds, doing a perfect job of keeping himself out of sight His hair was matted, and his sky blue eyes were shut after an exhausting day of chopping wood and trying to muck out the anxious, restless cows

Struggling to get to a cosy looking patch of grass a few steps away, a gleam caught Eragon's eye. Pouncing on the gleam, a deafening crack like a gunshot came from under his frozen body An exquisite, peacock blue stone was cracking as he rolled off. A jet of fire burst from it, as out emerged a deep, blue, fierce baby dragon

Magic awaits you all you have to do is believe. Olia, a 10 year old girl, sets off on a long journey into a magical world with her new friend, Felix. Together they face great challenges along the way to the Wizard's fortress

As Olia gets closer to home, she realises that she may not be able to free all the spirits and save the day. The Midnight Peacock by Katherine Woodfine Sophie, Lil, Billy and Joe are best friends. Sophie and Lil run a Ladies' Detective Agency and Billy and Joe also work there

The way Katherine Woodfine manages to let you believe one thing, then proves you wrong, is amazing The story is like a winding country road you never know where you might end up 'The Midnight Peacock' is the last (and I think the best) in a 4 book series The other books are called, 'The Clockwork Sparrow', 'The Painted Dragon' and 'The Jewelled Moth'.Hannah, 5F

I was drawn in by almost every sentence, each one descriptive and mysterious, with powerful dialogue.

The book is set in the early 1930s and is about a pair of twins, Scarlet and Ivy Grey. After the twins are separated to be sent to school, many mysteries begin to unfold

The story is smart and creepy with so many plot twists and so many suspects, but it all comes down to one person in the end And remember, whatever you do, don't send your children to Rockwood Boarding School!

The Dark

Laszlo is afraid of the dark. The dark lives in the same house as Laszlo. Mostly, though, the dark stays in the basement and doesn't come into Lazslo's room But one night, it does This is the story of how Laszlo stops being afraid of the dark.

In a dark, dark town there was a dark, dark street and in the dark, dark street there was a dark, dark house and in the dark, dark house three skeletons lived!

Follow these friendly skeletons as they visit the zoo and put their topsy turvy dog back together again!

It was night time in the supermarket and all was quiet but...Crash! Bang! Something had escaped from the freezer, something small and round and green. Someone had stuck me to the conveyer belt!

SUPERTATO TO THE RESCUE! He used his super speed. He used his super strength. He used a flannel and some soapy water.

Then Evil Pea chased Supertato around the cheese and the cakes. Then he fell into the icy depths of the freezer.

At the bottom of the lake is the...thing. I need it. I’ve tried restlessly to get it back But I know now that I can’t That you can That you know that you can I know you want it too

Shh! She’s listening. If she finds out well, it’s all over. And you don’t want that. Walk down the path, to your left and along six paces. You’ll come to an overgrown, rusty, peeling gate Don’t be deterred Walk on through You can’t miss it

The moon shines, reflecting on the surface of the still, glassy lake The reeds rustling in the whispering wind. The water is calm.

Look in further. Look for those startling, yellow eyes. Notice the fish being snapped up in the creatures jaws Follow the head down to the tail See it now? The faint, ghostly glow?

Remember You cannot harm the beast in any way The poor girl’s blood ran across your hands for days.

I need it. Get it

Year 2

Proud to Be Me

I have written an exciting, hard working book, I have tried to make it wondrous

I have cycled with my kind, daring dad in an enchanted forest which showed me how animals lived

I have looked at all the exciting, dangerous books in my bedroom

These are some things I have done

I could be a jaw dropping author with tales to tell to make you stare I could improve my handwriting to be the most flowing script I could be a wonderful dog trainer, looking after dogs as if they were my own

These are some things I could do

I will nurture the world in my arms

I will water the flowers so they shoot up like trees

I will care for all the animals with their glowing eyes and soft fur These are some things I will do

I am as kind as my cuddly dogs

I let people play and look after them

I am as strong as my dad and the ivy in my garden which never gives up

I am as brave as the fierce lion in the jungle These are some things that I am

Annabelle, 3M

Proud to Be Me

I have played with my funny dog, Duke, who loves children I have played with my friends who make me laugh I have trotted on a horse, up and down, up and down These are some things I have done

I could be an astonishing artist, or a poet who makes people laugh and cry I could be a scientist or an explorer who discovers under the sea I could be a hairdresser who makes your heart soar These are some things I could do

I will be kind to everyone I meet I will be a good citizen to everyone

I will be happy, sad or angry, but get better soon These are some things I will do

I am as kind as a tree which gives me oxygen I am as determined as tangly bushes which grasp at your skin I am as soft as the wind gently brushing your face These are some things that I am

Mia, 3D

Proud to Be Me

I am a shooting meteor, speedily flying across the crystal night sky. Crash! Bang! Boom! I speed towards my great passions and enthusiasms.

Glowing, flowing, I bend and twist to meet every challenge.

Happiness fills me and flows through me. Faster, faster, faster through the sky, I spin and play happily.

Shimmering, shining, glittering and gleaming, My destiny opens its arms wide to greet me, As bright as the Sun.

I am a feather; I float and glide on the gentle wind. Though the winds crash and bang around me, I am still the same feather. The lightness and brightness of the sun shines through and out of me.

Love, joy and helpfulness sweep through me. Love, love, love makes me shine. If you do dream, you will never get lost. Brightness hugs me and keeps me warm. I may not stand as high as a mountain, but I am proud to be me.

after Joseph Coelho, MORERAPS (Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Rhyme, Emotion, Repetition, Alliteration, Personification, Simile) Eva, 4H Isabel, 4K

I am a tree; sometimes I droop, other times I reach as tall as the sun.

On the outside, I am calm, but on the inside, I sing a song with a bang and a pop in the background. My leaves sway and play, quietly and quickly. When my leaves face the sun, they drink up happiness and joy.

I reach, reach, reach as high as the glistening stars. Even though the sun shines on, at times I can still droop

And then, my branches sing as the wind passes by As the tree in me is as warm and as powerful as the Sun.

I am a story with a beginning, a middle and an end.

My pages rustle like trickles of rain, spluttering down: roar, splash, drip.

The lightness and brightness of the sun shines through and out of me.

People read me calmly and empathetically.

I love, love, love beautiful books.

I am happy and hopeful as people read me.

My pages sway as the readers are sucked into my story. I shimmer like little diamonds in the sunlight.

I am proud to be me.

My Special Place

It's just for me

A place where I can dream about beautiful things Knowing the gardens are listening to my stories It's a place where bees feed on the nectar of roses and tulips Daisies and daffodils show off their colours And there I lie, Sprawled on the grass, wondering about the day ahead From sparrows and crows to robins, All birds thrive in my special place Sun and clouds too are in my special place, Bringing all the light and dark they have Oak and pine, birch and willow, All trees are in my special place Blue and green, Pink and orange, All colours are found in my special place For this is a place for everyone!

Isabella B, 5F

I lie

I lie on the thick grass and feel a breeze

The breeze brushes my face like an angel flying by, Wings beating swiftly and gently

The soft clouds float above me, fleeing away

To where? The big mystery

Branches make pools of cool shade, swaying calmly My mind meditates.

Bees buzz around and visit every flower

While butterflies are scared away by the the gentle gusts Nothing can stop this serenity

The world needs more of this peace I can taste the sunlight And feel the world finally becoming calm

Poems of Remembrance

The Christmas Truce

On a frosty Christmas morn ' , In a desolate and war torn land, The shooting stopped.

The guns were silent Just for one day.

We took a day to remember Our fellow soldiers of the war And to forget about the battle.

Instead of fighting, we played football, Upon the once flourishing land.

We called it the Christmas Truce

All joined together.

A day of peace

A day of hope

A day to remember Charlotte, 6S

Year 6

The Christmas Truce

This Great War is endless But how I wish it could stop Just for a minute Take a break, eat some food But this is just a fantasy Made up by you and me We can never be the heroes our country wishes us to be

But here, on Christmas Day Not a single gunshot was heard. A man...a truce...a day I will never forget Nobody died, nobody was hurt We played football We took a break, ate some food We made friends and we buried our dead If every day could be like this...

But then the dawn set in upon us Like today never happened And once again, we play our perilous game Fighting, killing, attacking, defending Old friends forgotten, New ones never stay long. Will this dark eternity ever cease?

I may not be visible, but I am there

I am in your memory, Part of your life, As I still am today

I hope you are happy

I hope you have freedom

Freedom from sorrow

I am part of every day

I want you to live the life you love,

To leave your life in peace and hope

I hope you have the life I pictured for you

Autumn

a MORERAPS poem

As far as the eye can stretch, beyond the sea of emeralds, amber and rubies, A howl from the wind, makes leaves rustle and trees whistle merrily.

Colour bursting and vibrant, peaceful and silent only birds singing sweetly from within the branches of the trees Playfully, conkers rain on your head, as cheeky squirrels scamper, gleeful and eager as ever. More, more and more horse chestnuts play hide and seek, dropping sneakily from beneath the leaves.

A cheeky litter of friendly foxes frolic fearlessly around some flapping ferns

Outside, trees wave merrily, swishing with energy, whilst leaves tickle you gently. Like an elegant crown, leaves circle together, forming the words:

Awesome Autumn!

Liya, 4H

Autumn

The fallen leaves of autu amber, bronze and eme They pile up like a famil while children jump aro There is rain or sun, Sometimes hot, sometim Raindrops jump from le Landing beneath a tree

As the trees let the brown, yellow and green leaves fall elegantly to the hard ground, Autumn arrives

Umbrellas cover us, shielding us from the cold showers of rain Which greet the cool winds.

The soft, pink blossom is long gone, fluttering through the wind as it glides in the air.

Under the safe shelter of our homes, we watch the bright moon as Halloween creeps in

Magical flowing leaves swish and swoosh around, but when the breeze stops, they fall to the ground.

Never will the wonders of autumn disappear.

One frosty Halloween morning, Flora and Mum went downstairs to put some croissants in the oven for breakfast.

Flora heard Mum shout from the front door where she had gone to collect the milk Flora raced to the door to see what was going on When she got there, she saw that that milk was spilt everywhere! In the puddle of milk were tiny footprints

"It must have been a fox," said Mum, annoyed. They headed inside and, before Mum could even get a mop to clean up the spilt milk, she shrieked again. All over the kitchen floor were Mum's birthday flowers and broken glass!

"I bet your dad broke this when he got home last night," said Mum, crossly She stomped over to the cupboard to get the mop out but, as soon as she opened the cupboard door, she shrieked yet again at the sight of the dog food spilled all over the rug.

"Where is Max? That greedy boy! He's messed up the whole cupboard!" Mum was very annoyed by now Then she saw that the spider webs for Halloween had all been pulled down She shrieked for the fourth time that day.

"Your little brother must have done this! He wouldn't stop playing with them yesterday." Now Flora was grumpy, too. Mum had a lot of telling off to do.

That night, they all went out to trick or treat While Flora and next door's children were knocking on doors, Mum chatted to the the next door neighbour. Mum told her what a ghastly day she had been having. The lady from next door said, "My cat, Blacky, has had a weird day, too. He came home with milky feet, spider webs on his tail, a rose behind his ear and a tummy so full that he couldn't eat his breakfast!"

Mum laughed It had been Blacky all along! She had been cross with her whole family that day, but Blacky was the real menace!

A gentle breeze rustles the leaves on the branches There are thousands and thousands of ruby red, orange , yellow and gold leaves on the colourful trees. The birds start packing their bags, ready for their winter migration. There are scampering squirrels collecting food, ready for winter. As you walk through the forest, you can hear leaves that crackle and crunch underneath your shoes

The smell of bonfires drifts through the air. The kitchen smells of pumpkin pie and the forests have a woody smell of fallen acorns. With cold, rosy cheeks and filled with excitement, the children break open the conker shells. Leaves dance from the branches to the ground in the wind, as the cold air nibbles your toes like a hungry rat
