Welcome to The Business Booster

Every year we are extremely proud to bring 150 sustainable energy innovations under one roof together with industry, investors, and policy makers. This edition marks a special milestone for EIT InnoEnergy: it is our tenth year hosting the largest sustainable energy innovation event. Over the past ten years, our ecosystem has gathered in different capital cities throughout Europe for two days of networking and to discover the breakthrough technologies of the future, today. In doing so we have been continuously delivering on our mission of accelerating the energy transition. But our work is far from over.
The race to reach net-zero by 2050 is in danger of being lost unless we rapidly activate and scale today’s technologies, while simultaneously unleashing a new age of discovery to find the unseen solutions of tomorrow. In short, we must focus all our efforts on a twin strategy of exploration and exploitation. That is why at this edition of The Business Booster we are focusing on ‘The race to net-zero: Balancing exploitation and exploration’.
Beating climate change demands rapid innovation from every corner of society. But because it will take decades to replace today’s fossil fuel-dependent industries with the cleaner operations of the future, the immediate imperative is to accelerate the deployment of key existing technologies that can buy humanity more time to meet the goals of the 2016 Paris Accords. While accelerating today’s technologies will buy us time, according to the IEA, half the technologies we need to achieve netzero haven’t even been invented yet. That means the critical second element of our mission must be exploration. We must empower and unleash today’s explorers to discover and develop innovations that will ultimately save the planet.

The net-zero agenda has shown us that the work of our trusted ecosystem is more important now than ever. And The Business Booster is a unique opportunity to experience this innovation ecosystem at work in person. Together, we will scale those big-impact technologies and discover the way forward for those of the future. Innovation will not only be an enabler of climate goals, but it will also be a driver of growth, creating jobs, economic prosperity and in the process ensure the transition to a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future. After all, we are not just in the race to net-zero. We plan to win it.

Scaling up today’s key technologies, fast

The world must speed up progress on tackling climate change if we are to meet the Paris Agreement goals and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It won’t be easy. But because it will take decades to replace today’s fossil-fuel-dependent industries with the cleaner operations of the future, the immediate imperative is to accelerate the deployment of key existing technologies that can buy humanity more time to create and grow those nascent solutions.

When good is good enough? Current technologies, even if they are not perfect, can meaningfully reduce emissions in the immediate future, such as green hydrogen, energy storage and renewables like wave, wind and solar energy. Entrepreneurs and investors must commercialise and scale these to achieve more sustainable energy to power manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture today.
In this roundtable session, two entrepreneurs will discuss their big-impact technologies and projects with members of the ecosystem that are bringing them to life. Projects that ten years ago were impossible and here they are today. Regulators, investors, and industry will weigh in on what is required to speed the deployment and commercialisation of these technologies, driving the most change in the short-term as we race towards net-zero.
From Magallanes to Elon Musk: new explorers for a new age of discoveries

According to the IEA, half the technologies we will need to achieve net-zero emissions haven’t been invented yet. So, while we scale those high impact solutions of today, we need to also look to the future. But what does the future hold? To find out, we must empower and unleash today’s explorers to discover and develop innovations that will ultimately save the planet, whether that’s fusion energy, tidal power, hyperloop or ideas we haven’t thought of yet. With these initiatives at work, innovation will not only be an enabler of climate goals, but it will also be a driver of growth, creating jobs, economic prosperity, and energy security in the process.
In this session, two innovators will show their technical solutions, that although may be viewed as a bit futuristic at present, have an enormous impact potential in the future. What is the status of these technologies? What is going on in their fields, respectively? When can they be deployed? What are the challenges and what is needed to make it happen? How to create a market and an industry? What political and social changes are needed to make it possible? These and other questions will be tackled in this roundtable sessions by members of the ecosystem that are needed to make these innovations become reality: entrepreneurs, policy makers, institutional leaders, investors, scientific representatives, and industry.

Is a 100% renewable system possible? Yes, integrating LDES in the equation

The global energy transformation is driving energy systems towards total renewable energy. Contrary to flexible fossil fuel-based supply, this will make energy supply less dispatchable as it is normally not available on-demand. As energy demand is extremely variable, and the demand for electricity also increases, the fundamental issue of matching supply and demand is amplified.
But storing energy on a massive scale will enable to solve this problem. Join this parallel session to discuss what a fully renewables-based energy system would look like and what is required to make it possible. We will discuss the innovative technologies that can make short, medium and long duration storage possible, as well as the policy landscape enabling it. Challenges such as delivery of renewable power to the location of the consumer and the massive additional renewable generation that will be needed will also be discussed.

Decarbonising hard to abate industries with green hydrogen

Top-emitting sectors such as heavy industry including steel and chemical production, as well as heavy-duty transport such as shipping, aviation and heavy goods vehicles, are responsible for nearly one third of global carbon emissions and are notoriously hard to abate. But as industry looks to innovate, decarbonisation of these energy intensive value chains is possible especially thanks to green hydrogen technologies . In this session you will meet some green hydrogen initiatives supported by InnoEnergy as experts from our ecosystem that are contributing to the decarbonisation of hard to abate industries. These initiatives will lead to a green hydrogen economy in Europe of 100B€/year, 500,000 new direct and indirect jobs in Europe, across the entire value chain and 400 million tons CO2 reduction.

Digitalisation vs Sustainability: How big tech is facing the race to net-zero

A total of 5 billion people around the world use the internet today. Everything happens online and we use digital devices to connect with everything around the globe whether it be for business, education or simply to relax. Amazon ships about 1.6 million packages every single day. Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day. Facebook’s global monthly active users reach 2.9 billion.
Data centres in Ireland are now consuming more electricity than all the rural homes in the country combined. These big tech corporations are conscious that the power consumption of their data centres and factories have exponential growth year on year, and they are developing strategies to deal with this that all industries can learn from. In this session, we invite you to listen to big tech’s Chief Sustainability Officers and learn how are they tackling sustainability and the race to net-zero.

In the transition to a low carbon future, oil and gas companies have an important role to play. As renewable energy sources and the technologies which enable them take an increasingly larger share of the energy mix, the role of oil and gas remains critical to balance energy supply needs and security. This has never been more important than now, at a time when we face a ticking clock to decarbonise industries in the face of climate change while also ensuring energy security where it is threatened by geo political events and resulting volatility. But perhaps these incumbents also have a responsibility and an opportunity to foster innovation and adopt technologies that bring us closer to cleaner operations of the future. Join this fireside chat with Galp and CEPSA as they discuss the role of oil and gas companies in the race to net-zero by 2050.

European Battery Alliance
The need for efficient batteries is growing fast, and for Europe, a domestic battery value chain is vital for a clean energy transition and competitive industry. The European Commission launched the European Battery Alliance in October 2017 to address this industrial challenge. The annual market value is estimated at €250B from 2025 onwards. For Europe, the establishment of a complete domestic battery value chain is imperative for a clean energy transition and a competitive industry. The industrial development programme of the European Battery Alliance (EBA), the EBA250, is managed by EIT InnoEnergy. Today, EBA250 is a project-driven community that brings together more than 750 industrial and innovation actors, from mining to recycling, with the common objective of building a strong and competitive European battery industry.

EBA Academy
Rightsizing the skills gap
A new industrial revolution is taking place and it’s electric. New projects across the battery value chain are expected to create between 3 and 4 million direct and indirect jobs over the next few years. Approximately 800,000 workers will need to be trained, upskilled, or reskilled by 2025 to meet this demand. With the EBA Academy, we’re drastically reducing the cost and time to upskill and/ or reskill workers by providing local training providers with access to industryproven training, ready for distribution to their clients and end customers.
Only a coordinated approach to developing and delivering training content adapted to the industry’s skills needs can help ensure that this demand is met. With the EBA Academy, we’re building a panEuropean education ecosystem that will reduce the cost for companies to up- and reskill workers while drastically increasing the efficiency and quality of in-house training. And we’re reducing the lead time for local (external) training providers to start and test new programmes or enhance their existing portfolio for this industry.

European Green Hydrogen Acceleration Center
The European Green Hydrogen Acceleration Center (EGHAC) has been established to decarbonise the hard-to-abate industrial value chains for steel, fertilisers, chemicals, and mobility. By bringing together all stakeholders including the off takers, the risk and benefits can be shared so that the premium for a carbon-free-produced end product is kept to a minimum. EGHAC builds industrial players and helps them to de-risk and accelerate their green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and aviation fuel initiatives. This is done through early-stage investment and acceleration services, provided in collaboration with the EGHAC ecosystem. In addition, we support other green hydrogen and derivates projects with assessing and refining their business case, conducting a team assessment and finally introducing them to a tailor-made advisory committee, with the objective to become an active investor and accelerate and de-risk these projects as well. Via its Business Investment Platform, EGHAC continues to evaluate new green hydrogen initiatives, looking to reduce their risk, gain faster entry to market and produce at scale.

Electric water tanks (EWS) waste a lot of energy in standby thermal losses (438 kWh/y for an 80L) since their insulation is not 100% effective. In Europe alone there are 28 mio EWS installed, representing around 10 TWh/y of wasted electricity.
THE SOLUTION.
By installing Klugit and placing the sensor in contact with a hot water pipe, a hot water usage routine can be learned through AI and water can be heated only when it is needed, delivering immediate savings for families. Additionally it offers an app and a Wi-Fi connection. Klugit is also the cheapest and quickest way to provide 'demand-side management' services for utilities, as it converts electric tanks into smart grid energy storage devices, solving one of renewable energy's problems.

VALUE PROPOSITION.
• Energy storage and grid balancing for utilities.

• No tools required.
• Prepared for dynamic tariffs and smart grid.
• Wi-Fi app enables control.

PRODUCT Solar Driven Dryer and Solar Hybrids
Fossil free for real
THE NEED.
Heat pump systems rely on geoenergy. Normally, the bore hole in the ground becomes increasingly cold. In larger systems with lots of bore holes there is an essential requirement for recharging.

THE SOLUTION.
Samster offers hybrids as a solution for buildings in central Europe instead of bore holes. Energy containers can be built from a combination of hybrid systems and heat pumps. In large systems, the geoenergy layer can be reduced if hybrids are installed. When changing an old heat pump to a new one the bore hole normally gets too small. Hybrids will solve this problem. When heating pools with a heat pump the hole does not recover in summer. Hybrids can recharge it.

VALUE PROPOSITION.
• A package of 10 hybrids with all required components can be offered to heat pump installers.

• Low cost energy for developing countries.
• System annual performance ( SCOP ) exceeds 5 in large systems.
• Systems have an excellent performance and high ROI.
• The same package can be offered with 2 hybrids.

At EIT InnoEnergy we follow the Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) principles for responsible investments. Moreover, the European Green Deal is at the core of our strategy.
In this context, one important related element is the contribution we make to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations
As part of EIT InnoEnergy’s commitment to making a positive impact on the energy sector, on the environment, the economy and on society, we assess the contribution the companies in our portfolio make to the SDGs.
Up to 95% of these companies contribute to SDGs 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13, given that SDG 7 and 13 are those with a direct link to EIT InnoEnergy’s strategic goals of the reduction of CO2 emissions, an increase in the security of energy supply, and the lowering of costs along the value chain.
For us this is not just a classification: SDGs are at the core of our investment process and provide a means to measure impact.
Reduction
"We are proud of the actual and the future impact of our assets, the estimations by 2030 will be 616Twh of generation of clean energy and the potential to reduce 1.1G tCO2 of greenhouse gas emissions, all these companies will contribute significantly to net-zero targets as the numbers show us, the innovation is the key to have a clean, decarbonised and sustainable world."
DIEGO PAVIA CEO EIT InnoEnergy
"In EIT InnoEnergy, when we invest, we evaluate what could be the contribution of our ventures in the impact dashboard KPIs. Then we set up a plan, together with the portfolio company, to boost those beyond the initial case. After 10 years in business, we feel proud of the achieved results and the expected ones by 2030. We are in a journey and we are delivering."
