Welcome to TBB.

Diego Pavia. CEO, InnoEnergy

Elena Bou. Innovation Director, InnoEnergy

Welcome to the sixth edition of the world’s leading event in sustainable energy – The Business Booster.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Copenhagen, for what I am sure will be a most insightful and inspiring two days together.

Over the next two days you will get a chance to see more than 150 innovative products that have put the scientific theory of before, into real life workable and commercially viable solutions, that are making an impact on the world now.

Each year, InnoEnergy works hard to ensure that The Business Booster offers delegates more prospects, opportunities and insights than ever before – giving businesses, right across the energy value chain and beyond, the ingredients needed to remain competitive in the energy transition.

As such, what better theme for 2018, than ‘The Future is Now’. This concept is not only apparent in the solutions that you will see at The Business Booster - it also rings true with political agendas around the world. What once was a mere afterthought, is now a global priority: 180 countries have ratified the Paris Agreement for climate change; 179 have put in place renewable energy targets, 50 have committed to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and since 2014, the world has seen a 25% boost in sustainable energy investment. The future is here, and The Business Booster is your chance to find sustainable energy solutions which will ensure your business remains competitive in today’s energy transition. I wish you all a fruitful two days here in Copenhagen, and, on a final note, encourage you to collaborate, invest and adopt.

4

This year, for the first time ever, industry delegates will take the stage to pitch their sustainable energy challenges to Europe’s most innovative entrepreneurs. And, also new in 2018, select experts will host a number of parallel sessions, providing audience members with inside knowledge on how their companies have revolutionised the way they now do business in the storage, transport, wind and smart city sectors. Yet, whilst the event is ever expanding to meet the growing energy challenges faced by businesses around the world, the heart and soul of the event remains constant: connecting sustainable energy innovations with industry, to ensure implementation of these technologies within the market. On that note, I hope you enjoy all that The Business Booster has to offer, and leave having found the innovative technologies your business requires to ultimately have a positive, sustainable energy impact, on the world.

The future is now The Programme The energy sector is evolving, with society as a whole. In the past, visions were presented and predictions made about how the future would look. They were met by many with scepticism, in terms of technology, economic viability, policy and society. But those possible “futures” have arrived – and earlier than expected. Predictions made of what would happen in the approaching years are today’s reality. Now they are establishing themselves, becoming rooted in the daily lives of all citizens. The technology is here, the actors are here and ready (both incumbents and newcomers), policy-makers now deal with topics that were off their agenda just years ago, and we, the world’s citizens, are aware of it and are ready and willing to play our part. This TBB. proposes to be a “window” onto a future that is present. The event returns to its origins and makes the journey from scientific basis to the practical field – on the market and in business, in politics and throughout society.

What do we need for the future? What are the most challenging problems that we face and that require a solution? We know that to make a decent life accessible to everyone on the planet we need inexpensive sustainable energy and improved societal infrastructure. The fact that we don’t have these yet means that there are scientific, technological and economic improvements that we need to work on. But what are they? —Is it a breakthrough in electrochemistry? Is it better AI applications? Is it a different market structure? Are there fundamental limitations that we are running into? We shall learn what the brightest minds are working on and what we should expect lies just around the corner. The future is now Smart Cities 17 October. 14:00-15:00h. Breakout room 1

Smart cities: just a buzzword in city marketing, or today’s reality? Today, the built urban environment is accountable for between 33-40% of total energy consumption. Energy-efficient buildings and wider cities are key to sustainable development. Around the world, initiatives emerge to make our cities smarter by integrating technology that will boost the performance of urban services as well as increase quality of life. But how can we manage this transition given that 75-90% of today’s buildings will still be in use in 2050, owing to low demolition and renovation rates? How can we overcome hurdles such as public administrative processes and legislation?

The audience is encouraged to participate and steer discussions. A qualified jury will judge the arguments and chose the best one-liner and debater at the end. So join the debate on smart cities to stay up-to-date!

This session proposes an interactive debate on the topic of smart cities. There will be ample time for advocates and sceptics to share their views and experiences. Since there is no single “truth”, it is about listening and understanding a range of arguments that will provide everybody with the information they need to enable an effective transition towards smarter building and cities.

The future is now Batteries 17 October. 17:30-18:30h. Breakout room 3

Batteries can do it. Batteries have the potential to be a game changer in the power sector, transportation and industry. The power sector is facing new challenges. Increasing levels of variable production from renewables batteries can offer an attractive solution to shift load, reduce power demand and increase power quality e.g. frequency control. Batteries can also solve the increasing variability in demand, e.g. caused by decreased load from more efficient appliances and increased load, e.g. from charging vehicles and electrification of the heating sector. In the transport sector, batteries are an obvious component in electric vehicles of all types: from passenger cars to buses and eventually even aircrafts. Less known is that battery-operated trucks could potentially be electrified. In the industrial sector, small combustion engines are used in many applications, including garden machines. All these combustion engines can potentially be replaced by battery-operated machines. We have also seen how battery-operated hand tools can quickly gain market shares by

offering more flexibility than grid-connected machines. Finally, a large group of heavy machines, usually referred to as “yellow machines, are subject to electrification. With a focus on the power and industrial sectors, executives from industry and politics will share their visions of the future, what is already in the making and where further development is still required. A wonderful opportunity to make use of the InnoEnergy innovation ecosystem and to contribute to this recently focused thematic area.

Parallel sessions

The future is now Wind 18 October. 11:45-12:45h. Breakout room 3

A new target recently established at European level requires 32% of Europe’s final energy consumption to be covered by renewables by 2030. Given this, wind power is expected to play a key role in the European energy mix. This will have a positive impact on the creation of jobs and on investment opportunities in concepts that help achieve these targets. The wind industry is facing a revolution in which digitalisation is expected to play a fundamental role, unlocking new business models as well as impacting on CAPEX and OPEX targets to meet extremely low LCOE figures. Players across the whole value chain will discuss the possible impact of these transformations and how their organisations will tackle the main elements of them. With a focus on how digital solutions can be implemented and provide value, executives from industry and politics will share

their view with us on current trends and on what is required in the future. The InnoEnergy ecosystem is already playing a role in this new field, and this discussion can bring an opportunity for matchmaking or to adjust value propositions.

The future is now Mobility 18 October. 14:00-15:00h. Breakout room 1

The transformation of the energy system is closely coupled with mobility and transport, which accounts for 33,1% of the total energy consumed (Final energy consumption, EU-28, 2015, Source Eurostat). Innovations in drive technologies, e.g. E-mobility and batteries, as well as disruptive developments such as autonomous driving will make an extraordinary impact on the world of mobility. New business models are evolving, e.g. “Mobility This is a wonderful opportunity to make use of as a Service” challenging the current private the InnoEnergy innovation ecosystem and to ownership of cars. All these open up numerous contribute to this highly relevant thematic area. business opportunities for both established and new market participants. All require brilliant minds and big ideas in order to take root and find success. With a focus on road-based traffic, executives from industry and politics will share their picture of the future; what is already in the pipeline and where gaps remain that still require solutions.

A04 EP Tender · France

Range-extending as a service for electric vehicles (EV) THE NEED. Electric vehicles are unable to satisfy occasional peak range requirements. This is proving a prominent limitation to user acceptance. The marginal cost of an additional range is very high, whereas the frequency of long distances is low. These dual constraints cannot be compromised. THE SOLUTION. Converting raw biogas into high purity biomethane THE NEED. Current biogas producers experience uncertainty in their expected return when investing in technical solutions aimed at transforming biomass into an energy resource. THE SOLUTION. Arol Energy’s Amine product is a purification unit which transforms raw biogas into biomethane based on highly efficient removal of CO2 by heat-driven amine. The biomethane is then available for injection into the natural gas grid or use as vehicle fuel. B03 Hymeth · Denmark Product: BEAUTY

The world’s first electromagnetic alkaline electrolyser THE NEED. A balancing energy storing technology is needed to enable more sustainable sources in the energy mix. Hydrogen is promising, but conventional electrolysers for sustainable hydrogen production are very expensive, as they require a platinum or iridium-based catalyst, energy inefficient, physically large in size and only compress hydrogen gas up to 35 bar, which requires additional compressor further increasing OPEX/CAPEX. THE SOLUTION. BEAUTY is a low-temperature alkaline electrolyser, compact, lightweight, that supports high-pressure electrolysis. It is the result of radical innovations: a new non-precious alloy electrocatalyst, the use of electromagnetism in the conversion process, the spiralled design of the anode and cathode, the electro-hydraulic valve and unique nozzles, through which it is capable of delivering highly compressed gas, and the design, material and cooling system that ensures a lightweight and compact electrolyser that reduces the physical footprint. BEAUTY is expected to produce hydrogen at a cost reduction of up to 40% compared to existing alkaline electrolysers. It is a state-of-the-art system for FC vehicle refilling stations, sustainable steel production, bio oil refinery, energy storage, etc.

Future renewable energy costs: Offshore wind 57 technology innovations that will have greater impact on reducing the cost of electricity from European offshore wind farms

Economic analysis of the impact of electricity regulation On the retail price of electricity, income transfers between producers and consumers, and economic growth

Offshore Wind Report The purpose of this report is to document the cost of energy for offshore wind projects reaching financial investment decision (FID) up to 2030, by modelling the impact of a range of technical innovations and other effects including financing and supply chain impacts. More than 50 technology innovations were identified as having the potential to cause a substantial reduction in LCOE through a change in the design of hardware, software or process. In this report, InnoEnergy extends the temporal horizon of the previous offshore wind study to 2030 and increases the turbine capacity to 10MW to look at longer-term trends in the innovation pathways.

Economic analysis of the impact of electricity regulation The objective of this study is to develop and implement three econometric models in order to identify the impact of electricity regulations (1) on the retail price of electricity; (2) on income transfers between producers and consumers; and (3) on economic growth. In this context, the aim of these models is to assess the impact of the regulation of the electricity sector and the changes introduced in this regulation on the economy throughout the period under consideration.
