FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS; A TOWN BUILT ON COMMUNITY SPIRIT

While most towns are built on business and driven by the economy, Peregian Beach is unique. This is a community by the people for the people and visitors are soon discovering this gem located just a short drive from the tourism mecca of Noosa Heads.

L

ocals love the laid-back lifestyle of Peregian Beach with its cool cafes, fresh sea air and tropical vibe. This is the place to be when you want to kick off your shoes and let the kids run free in the sprawling beachside park. The creation of this town was almost by accident and it’s this casual approach to town planning that formed the foundation of this unique village. When construction began, no formal town plan was in place resulting in roads simply being built along the easiest route. The land on either side was divided into lots and the lucky first residents began to build, with the first home built in 1960 on Pelican Street. It still stands today, although beautifully renovated to maximise the prime location and sweeping views over the beach. There were tennis courts and a sports oval, along with a community pool that sat right where the village green is today. This was a community hub designed for those who wanted to feel the sand between their toes and the sun on their faces; and it still is today.

Peregian locals have managed to keep overdevelopment at bay, resulting in a uniquely village-style community. Look around and you will see there are no high-rise buildings or hotels encroaching on the dunes; just low-set homes and relaxed community spaces ready for the whole family to enjoy. Peregian Beach has always been a shining example of community spirit, evident when they banded together to create the first kindergarten, the local bush fire brigade and bowls club; along with volunteer groups who created the Veggie Village and still help regenerate the dunes and wetlands. Today, Peregian Beach is a unique oceanside town loved by locals and visitors for its vibrant, laid-back vibe. The Sunday Morning Markets and Peregian Originals concerts bring in thousands of visitors each month who come for the market-finds and music but stay for the great food and exceptional shopping.

Name: Alan Loweke Age: Old enough to drink coffee Where can people find you: Peregian Beach Bakery What do you love about being a barista? I love being creative and making people happy and people are always happy once they have a coffee in their hand. If you were a coffee, what would you be and why? I would be just like a mocha because I’m strong and bold with a hint of sweetness. What is the most popular coffee style at your café? No matter what is trending, cappuccinos and lattes are always a popular favourite. When did you first start drinking coffee and why? I was 12 when I started with chicory coffee liquid. It was easy to drink and even better in a milkshake. From there, as I got older, I moved onto the real stuff. I just love the flavour of coffee! What is your go-to in the morning? I usually start with a tea but I have a strong latte mid-morning to keep me going. What do you love about Peregian Village? The village atmosphere and that everyone seems to know one another. It’s a friendly place and a great place to work or visit. Anything else you would like to add? Peregian Village is a special place; there is so much to see and do. Make sure you come and spend the day here, you won’t be disappointed.

TASTY TREATS AT PEREGIAN BEACH’S BEST BAKERY From their mouth-watering sweet treats to the ever-popular sourdough breads, the Peregian Beach Bakery is the local’s best kept secret. Bursting with lunch ideas from salad rolls to wraps, bagels, quiches, pies and so much more, you are spoilt for choice. Locals love the 36-hour sourdough made from French imported flour with no gluten additives so those with an intolerance can also enjoy this loaf. But be quick or order in advance as the freshly-baked goodies get quickly snapped-up by in-the-know locals! 19 5448 1366

Name: Gareth Kelly Age: 44 Where can people find you: Kellys of Peregian What do you love about being a barista? The social interaction and getting to know our regulars really well. If you were a coffee, what would you be and why? Mug of latte - it’s a pretty smooth easy-to-take coffee. I’m a pretty relaxed, easy going person. What is the most popular coffee style at your café? It’s a toss-up between a mug of cappuccino or mug of flat white. When did you first start drinking coffee and why? I started drinking coffee pretty late by most people’s standards. I was in my 20s travelling and most people want to catch up over a coffee or pint. What is your go-to coffee in the morning? Mug of skinny latte. What do you love about Peregian Village? I love all the options, everyone does something well. It’s a relaxing atmosphere, great for families with kids that need a run or to just sit back and people watch. Anything else you would like to add or that people should know? Sometimes people apologise for their kids running riot in the cafe, I just laugh. With five of my own I’m used to it; it’s why we’ve set up the cafe the way we have. This is a place where parents won’t be judged for their kids being kids.

GREAT FOOD, GREAT ATMOSPHERE AND GREAT SERVICE Nestled in the Village Square, Kellys of Peregian is the go-to for Peregian’s families. There’s a play space for the kids and a menu that offers delicious yet simple food the whole family will love. From their Australian Ocean-caught Barramundi to their Mooloolaba king prawns and tender calamari, Kellys of Peregian is a place where you can enjoy the very best of the coastal lifestyle and local seafood! Let the kids run free in the square while you sip your wine and tuck into one of their homemade cakes. 17 5448 3106

GELATO MAGNIFICO!

I

t takes just a few minutes to demolish a cone of gelato, but did you know it takes over a month to learn how to master the art of making this delicious treat?

Peregian Pantry owner Monica Werner opened the doors to her gelataria and deli in May this year after returning from Italy where she attended a university for gelato making. “I picked up a magazine in the UK and there was a story about the best gelato shops in the region. All of the owners talked about a gelato university in Italy,” Monica recalls. “I couldn’t believe there was such a thing but I thought we could do with a great gelataria in Peregian Beach.” Soon after, Monica was on a plane to Italy where she would learn the art of gelato making alongside 32 other sweet tooths who had enrolled in the four-week course. “It was such a magical experience,” Monica recalls. “There was so much love and joy as we bonded over hot milk and sugar.” Monica recalls wondering how hard it could be to make gelato, but 5-hour lectures and afternoons spent churning gelato soon showcased why making gelato is an art form. “The process is actually scientific,” she says. “Making gelato is all about balance and there is a real art when it comes to getting the balance right. “You have different ingredients that behave differently

and you need to coax them into freezing. Salt and sugar, for example, don’t freeze, but with the right balance you can create the perfect consistency and amazing gelato.” For Monica, learning to make gelato at a dedicated university was the best way to learn and she now handmade gelato daily on Italian machines right in her Peregian store.

CRAVING SUSHI? We chat to Suzi from Sushi Wave to find out some of the do’s and don’ts of Japanese dining culture. DO Slurp – it’s ok to slurp when eating hot or cold noodles such as ramen. The louder the better! Yell – it’s ok to yell in restaurants. In Japan, customers are greeted loudly by restaurant staff yelling “irashaimase” meaning “welcome” and “come in”. Drink from the bowl – you can lift small plates and bowls to your mouth. As an example, you can drink your miso soup directly from the bowl using your chopsticks to direct larger pieces into your mouth. DON’T Tap your chopsticks - avoid using them as drumsticks, stabbing your food, or waving them around in the air while talking.

Don’t mix - In serious sushi restaurants - it’s not considered polite to mix your wasabi into the soy - instead add a little wasabi directly to the fish. Having said that - if you want to mix your wasabi and soy at sushi wave - go right ahead – they’re cool with that!

A SLICE OF JAPAN RIGHT HERE IN PEREGIAN BEACH Discover authentic Japanese cuisine at Sushi Wave. Locals have been riding the wave of fresh flavours for almost ten years enjoying a gluten-free menu of Izakaya-style hot dishes, the freshest sushi and sashimi in the region, with sugar-free sushi rice. Sushi Wave sources free-range animal products and every dish is prepared by local owner and head chef Kaz Yuki and his full Japanese kitchen ensuring an authentic dining experience.

STYLE THAT MAKES YOU SMILE

S

tyling your home should be all about you and what makes you happy. Whether you crave a coastal look bursting with pieces made from raw materials or something luxe with plush fabrics and unique art, we have three top tips from Bedouin Traders’ owner Brad to help you create a space that brings happiness.

MIX AND MATCH

In this world of social media, it’s easy to get stuck in the mindset of needing to achieve Instagram-worthy spaces in your home. A home that is comfortable and full of the things you love is worth so much more than a space styled to perfection.

TEXTURE AND PATTERNS

Create comfort and interest in your space by mixing textures and patterns. You can keep to a simple colour scheme if you like, but add raw materials and an array of textures and simple patterns to create a space that is relaxing and comfortable.

FIND YOUR STYLE

When you’re out browsing homewares, go with your gut. Often, we are drawn to pieces we love; we want to pick them up or they make us smile. Go with this feeling because this is your natural, authentic style.

BEACHY HAIR

W

e all know we need to apply sunscreen before hitting the beach, but how do you care for your hair? Salt, sand and sun are not your hair’s friend with high salt and UV exposure leading to sad, dehydrated hair plagued with split ends.

but there’s no need to sacrifice your locks to achieve this cute and modern style. There are plenty of products on the market that can give you this relaxed look without soaking your hair in salt while avoiding a hairbrush.

What can you do to protect your hair? You could wear a swimcap if you’re spending a lot of time in the water or simply spritz in a leave-in conditioner before you soak in the salty ocean. Wearing a hat while you’re soaking up the sunshine will keep the UV rays away as well as help keep you cool.

•S hampoo every other day to keep volume in your locks

When you get home, make sure you shampoo and conditioner your hair to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. If you want to go all out, apply a deep conditioning hair mask to really bring those locks back to life. We do love the tousled beach hair look,

Some quick tips to get the look:

•U se dry shampoo to soak up excess oil and create texture and grittiness •U se a paste to add texture that is re-workable throughout the day •A great blow dryer will give you plenty of volume to work with as well as lock in your style •S ea Salt Spray can mimic the effects of the beach without sacrificing the health of your hair

FIGHTING FIT IN PARADISE Whether you live in this piece of paradise or are here for a holiday, it’s tempting to just kick back poolside with cocktails. But keeping active should be a part of your daily routine. As Fletch from @FliteFit Peregian Beach explains, the team can train on the beach, in the park or their gym so there’s no excuse! Follow these tips to stay motivated: 1. Be Stronger Than Your Excuses - Exercise can be more of a mental game than it is a physical one. The more times you fight through the excuses, the stronger you’ll get mentally. 2. Set Yourself a Goal - Be realistic and don’t stop until you reach it. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to say “I did it”. 3. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People - Support, encouragement and engagement are contagious. Plus, and most importantly - working out with friends is just plain fun.

PEOPLE OF PEREGIAN BEACH whole village is surrounded by the green border of the Noosa National Park. I opened my bookshop in 2008, and since then I have fallen in love with the whole Peregian Beach Village community, and the unique features of this little place, such as the kindy, the community garden and community house, the markets, Peregian Originals and so much more.

Name: Annie Grossman Age: Grown Up!!! (61) Where can people find me? In my favourite place, Annie’s Books on Peregian, in the Village. What attracted you to Peregian Beach? Peregian Beach attracted me right back in 1996 when I bought my house. The empty beaches and the profusion of wildlife were the main reasons, along with the fact the

The Village is a buzzing hub with shops you will not find anywhere else, funky cafes and great restaurants, a stone's throw from the beach. Despite Peregian’s popularity, I find that the residential areas are still very peaceful; I experience no traffic noise and very little human noise in my area, just the night time bush sounds. I feel blessed to live in this place. I originally came from Harbourside Sydney, and lived for 10 years in the Whitsundays, but nowhere compares to this! Describe Peregian Beach in three words: Piece of paradise. tracks 48 - 5. Is it true you were born in Peregian Beach’s Plover Street? Yes, in a little fibro shack on top of the hill, I believe it is still there today! The ambo’s were called but didn’t get there on time so I was popped out right there on the kitchen floor.

Age: 38

What do you love most about Peregian Beach? This is one of the best spots on the Sunshine Coast. Peregian Beach has a great local vibe and tight knit community without the overwhelming feeling of heavy tourism that other towns nearby may have.

Where can people find you? Hard at work at Peregian Beach Hotel… otherwise surfing the local surf breaks around

How would you describe Peregian Beach in three words? Great Local Community.

Name: Luke Plain

Name: Leigh McCready Age: 42 Where can people find you? Literally everywhere in Peregian Beach! On weekdays I can be found at the Peregian Digital Hub, where I run a business which provides Finance and HR services to technology start-ups. On weekends I run the Peregian Nippers program where over 100 kids learn to be safe in the water while having heaps of fun! In between I’m in and out of all the fabulous cafes, restaurants, retail shops and wellness providers we are lucky enough to have here. What first attracted you to Peregian Beach? My parents-in-law have owned here since the 1990s, and once we decided it was time for Rob and I to start our family, it made sense to move here to be closer to our families and to give our children the gift of the most idyllic and happy childhood we could think of. We have raised four children who have climbed every tree in our park and explored each little bit of the heart of Peregian, The Village Square. They know it like the backs of their hands and feel completely safe here. How long have you lived/worked in Peregian Beach? We moved here permanently in 2007 and have lived in seven different streets across Peregian Beach! In that year we also started a local construction business, Altum Constructions, based in the village square. Altum has also been a long-term supporter and sponsor of the Peregian Surf Club and the major partner of the Food and Fashion Festival, the event which has now become Village Vibes. Being involved in the community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of living and working here. We have both served on many committees over the years, including the Community Kindergarten, Business Association, Community House and more recently as the founders of Peregian Family and Friends, which is a community organisation which supports family-friendly initiatives across Peregian.

What do you love most about Peregian Beach? There is so much to love! It’s wonderful that all the visitors who come here fall in love with the village; that many people from across the Coast come here to visit their favourite shop or café; that you can walk most places safely with a pram or a dog; that you can walk barefoot anywhere and no one bats an eyelid. I love the dog beach which makes my staffie so happy, I love the breathtaking views, I love the community spirit we have here. I love the fact that any day of the week, I can walk through the Village and randomly meet people I know and can have a chat. How would you describe Peregian Beach in three words? Family Connected Nature. Anything else you want to add? We are in the process of reinvigorating our local Surf Club and we have started with a new Nippers program which is in it’s second year. We would love anyone who loves visiting the beach at Peregian to consider volunteering and becoming a lifesaver, or helping out with nippers. The contribution of our local Surf Club to the community is immeasurable and it’s also a great bunch of people so get in touch if you’d like to join us!

PEREGIAN’S PROPERTY PEOPLE

O

nly 30 years ago, Peregian Beach was a very different place. You could snap up land for about $6,000, there was a pool in the heart of the village and only two real estate agents serviced the growing township. Today, the area has boomed with multi-milliondollar homes soaring high above the coastline, a vibrant village square bursting with families and a plethora of agents servicing the region, but one story stands out from the rest. Lyn Wildman began her career as a zoology teacher at Maroochydore State High School but passion for challenges soon lead her to consider a career change. After completing her a real estate course in Toowoomba, Lyn began working with Chris Moller in Nambour. Lyn recalls feeling instantly comfortable in her role selling homes and

Beach with Lyn’s son Peter Martin now taking the reins.

Within her first year in the industry, Lyn bought John Fraser Real Estate for $5,000 – a small business in a side street of Peregian Beach. In those days, listings were written on a chalkboard and Lyn, along with her only salesperson David Bennett, would drive around trying to learn as much as they could about the region.

“Peter is the best trained in the business,” Lyn says. “He came into the industry when he was 16 helping with letterbox drops and coming to open homes. He was always going to be in the industry.”

There were six agents in Peregian at that stage and, soon after in 2000, there were just two. Competition like this meant Lyn soon had a flourishing business built on referrals and great service selling mostly vacant beachfront blocks of land for $40,000 and residential land for about $6,000. After eight years in the industry, Lyn was approached by multiple franchise groups but ultimately chose LJ Hooker. LJ Hooker is now the leading real estate agency in Peregian

For Lyn, her time in the local real estate industry has been “a great ride” and she is now happy to enjoy her time enjoying Peregian Beach. “I love the village atmosphere of Peregian Beach and how you can meet people from all works of life,” she says. “Peregian Beach is a very special and welcoming place. This is such a great place to live and I want to thank everyone who has worked with me or whom I have dealt with over the years. It’s been a great ride.”

PEREGIAN: THE PEOPLE’S PLACE

P

eregian Beach is so much more than just amazing dining and boutique shopping, it’s also a place where people come together to create an unrivalled community vibe. From a communal veggie garden to the ultimate digital hub, this is a thriving community where everyone is welcome. The Community Centre is a place for the community to meet whether you want to learn to dance, check out art or listen to an informative talk. This not-for-profit space is an award-winning, architecturally designed hub with a flexible floorplan and small amphitheatre ready to host a wide range of events from weddings to workshops. Next to the community centre is the Peregian Beach Digital Hub, a haven for the entrepreneurial and tech-savvy. Here, you will find a mix of merging and established technology enterprises and entrepreneurs collaborating and co-working side-by-side as well as regular workshops in digital technology, such as coding for all ages. Walk down to Rufous Road and you will find the Veggie Village of Peregian Beach. Established in 2007, the village is a lush haven for the green thumb. Anyone is welcome to wander down, have a look at the garden or head along to one of the working bees to make new friends, learn new skills and find out more. The bountiful garden produces organic fruit, herbs and vegetables and is now home to a wood-fired pizza oven. The Veggie Village is run by volunteers and is a testament to how a community can

come together, grow together and produce nourishing food for everyone to enjoy. When it comes to the littlest members of the region, the Peregian Beach Community Kindergarten also finds its roots in community when in 1976, a group of parents formed a playgroup on the same site where the centre stands today. The building was opened in 1982 and still stands today offering kindergarten for some of Peregian Beach’s youngest residents.
