Art to make YOU SMILE

When I arrive at Simone’s Coolum Beach studio, I spy one of her vibrant vintageinspired pieces from the front window and the bold pops of colour and detailed depictions quite literally transport me back in time!

I am intrigued to see Simone’s work up close, and when her warm and friendly face greets me with a huge smile, I can tell she’s just as excited to share her story as I am to hear it. Simone’s philosophy is simple: she creates art to simply make you smile.

“A smile is contagious; when you see someone smile, you smile back and a connection is made without saying a word,” Simone said. “My art isn’t deep; it has no dark connotations.

“It’s simply joyful and I believe art can positively change someone’s state of mind – it’s an empowering feeling and has always driven me to keep creating.”

Professional sport took our cover artist Simone Wolowiec (aka Art-by-Simone) all over the globe. But now, a contented life on the Sunshine Coast offers new-found inspiration for her retro-inspired art prints, discovers Jodie Cameron.

Born and raised in Melbourne, from the age of 18 to 31, Simone was on the elite sports circuit as a professional race walker, travelling to Europe to compete in the Race Walking World Cup, and the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

A naturally disciplined and ambitious person, Simone set her sights high, and until her retirement, pursued the dream of becoming an Olympian.

“I wouldn’t change anything about my career, but I do wish I had been less hard on myself and more mindful of celebrating in the moment,” Simone reflected. “To be able to call yourself an Olympian is the ultimate pinnacle of success, and I thought for a very long time that’s what I needed to do.

“But I am very content with my career and thankful for the opportunities and the travel I was fortunate to experience.”

After retiring in 2006, Simone and her

husband Jaroslav lived in San Diego, California for 10 years before returning home to Melbourne.

Eager to escape the hustle and bustle of inner-city life, they headed north to the Sunshine State a few years later, where they now live a quiet existence by the ocean.

“The Sunshine Coast is a holiday destination; I feel very blessed to enjoy it every day, and still pinch myself at how lucky I am to live here,” Simone says.

“I have been truly inspired by my surroundings – from Caloundra to Noosa, we have a stunning coastline. It’s a rugged beauty with an element of wildness, and this is how my Sunshine Coast Series was born.”

Using a digital program called Procreate, Simone has created 35 illustrations of Sunshine Coast beaches, parks and popular tourist spots, including our front cover image, Caloundra. Simone’s art is relatable because of its geographical locations; they strike a chord and that memory transports you to a place in time when you were there.

“I need to travel to a place, experience the vibe and feel the energy of my surroundings before I put pen to iPad,” Simone explained. “I like to see through the eyes of the visitor, taking it all in and capturing the view from their perspective. But the graphic, geometric style is my own artistic interpretation.”

Speaking fondly of her late father Henry who was also a keen illustrator, Simone says the creative gene runs in her family, with him inspiring her to draw from a young age.

“When I was living overseas, my dad would always draw a sketch of a bird or a koala on the back of the envelope,” she said. “The lady in the Post Office would say, ‘What are you drawing now, Henry?’ She couldn’t wait to see every time he came to post a letter.

“I cut out all the sketches, and I have them now to look back on. I know he would be really proud of me and my art.”

So how does one make the transition from professional athlete to flourishing artist? With art lessons, of course, and it

was Simone’s husband who was instrumental in helping her realise that it was time to give her body a muchneeded break and find a new passion.

“Retirement was a catalyst for trying something new, so I talked about going straight into mountain running to try to to make it as high as I possibly could,” she said. “But my husband suggested trying something that wasn’t as physically taxing on my body, so he purchased me some art classes at the Gasworks Arts Park in Melbourne and that passion that was once sport, became my passion for art.”

In the early days, Simone worked largely with oil on canvas. Inspired by the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, she had a particular passion for the fashion, design and pop art culture of these eras because it captured a sense of growing optimism and hopefulness.

“Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were beginning to emerge in the art world during this post-war period, and I thoroughly enjoyed creating in that vintage art-deco style,” she said.

Moving from creating traditional art to digital art was frightening, because Simone wasn’t sure what the response would be.

“Thankfully, it has worked for me, not against me – it allows me to tap into

a more commercial market because it’s crisp, sharp and accessible,” she said.

A recent collaboration with Tourism Noosa to develop a children’s colouring book called Colour In Noosa is helping Simone move into the realm of illustrating, and she is enjoying this new process and way of thinking.

“I had to capture the iconic places of Noosa, but then simplify those images into lines in order to make the picture make sense, because there are no colours to differentiate what is what,” Simone said. Colour In Noosa is aimed at children aged 3-12 and is for sale through the Noosa Visitor Information Centre.

With her first art exhibition at the Mulbury Gallery in Melbourne already crossed off her bucket list, what’s next?

More local collaborations of course, and having worked with Flo’s Crêperie and the Eumundi Markets to leverage her Sunshine Coast Series into commercial art merchandise, she is eager to continue growing this line of her business so her art can become more accessible and affordable for anyone to own and appreciate.

“For now, my style is very much within the lines, and that’s similar to my personality,” Simone said. “But the more I grow, the freer I become and the more fluid I feel, which could translate to me being a little more spontaneous.

“I'm excited to see where my art journey will take me!”

So are we. Follow the journey at www.art-by-simone.com

BREAKING THROUGH

Blocks

Let go of limiting beliefs and allow yourself to set goals that’ll help you truly thrive this year, says award-winning coach and author, Nikki Fogden-Moore.

Life is full of opportunities to thrive, yet so many people find themselves standing on the sidelines, held back by invisible barriers. These barriers are limiting beliefs - often self-imposed; and they are the blocks that stop us from setting goals that resonate deeply and pursuing them with the conviction we deserve.

Recognising and removing these beliefs isn’t just transformative; it’s essential for achieving sustainable success.

WHAT ARE LIMITING BELIEFS?

Limiting beliefs are assumptions or perceptions we hold about ourselves, others or the world that constrain our potential.

Left unchecked, these beliefs dictate how we think, act and set goals. Often referred to as your ‘ego’, these subconscious patterns keep us stuck, yet seem like they are keeping us safe.

STEP 1: SPOTTING THE BLOCKS

Identifying your limiting beliefs requires honesty and introspection. Here’s how to uncover them:

1. Listen to Your Inner Dialogue

Pay attention to the thoughts that surface when you consider stepping out of your comfort zone. Are you telling yourself it’s impossible or not worth it? These thoughts reveal hidden blocks. WRITE THEM DOWN!

Left in the mind they take up valuable space and can’t be transformed into more positive thoughts.

2. Examine Repeated Patterns

Look at areas in your life where you feel stuck. Are there recurring themes in relationships, career or health? These often point to underlying beliefs.

3. Challenge Your “Truths”

Write down statements you believe to be true about yourself. For instance, “I’m not a numbers person” or “I’m too old to change careers.” Then ask yourself, “Is this really true?” Often, these ‘truths’ are just stories we’ve told ourselves.

4. Notice Emotional Triggers

Feelings of frustration, envy or anxiety can be signposts. If you envy someone’s success, for example, it may stem from a belief that you’re not capable of achieving the same.

STEP 2: REWRITING THE NARRATIVE

Once you’ve identified your blocks, it’s time to dismantle them. Here’s how:

1. Name the Belief

Acknowledge the limiting belief without judgement. For instance, “I believe I’m not smart enough to succeed in business.”

Naming it brings it into the light.

2. Trace Its Origin

Ask yourself, “Where did this belief come from?” Did it stem from a childhood

experience, societal pressure or a past failure?

Understanding the source helps you see the belief for what it is: a product of the past, not your present.

3. Flip the Script

Replace the limiting belief with an empowering one. Instead of “I’m not smart enough,” affirm, “I have the ability to learn and grow.” Write it down and repeat it daily to rewire your thinking.

4. Prove Yourself Wrong

Take small, consistent actions that challenge the belief. If you think you’re not good at public speaking, sign up for a workshop or volunteer to lead a meeting. Each step chips away at the block and builds confidence.

What we think about expands, so practising replacing old statements and following through is vital.

STEP 3: SETTING GOALS THAT RESONATE

Removing limiting beliefs clears the path for authentic goal-setting. Here’s how to set goals that align with your true desires:

1. Start with Your Vision

What does success look and feel like to you? Forget societal expectations or what others think you should want. Focus on what excites and energises you.

2. Align Goals with Values

Goals that resonate deeply are rooted in your core values. If freedom and creativity matter to you, design goals that honour those values.

3. Make Them Specific and Measurable

Vague goals lead to vague results. Instead of “I want to be successful,” say, “I will grow my business revenue by 30% in the next year by launching a new product.”

4. Break Them Into Micro Milestones

Big goals can feel overwhelming. Divide them into smaller, actionable steps to create momentum and make the process feel manageable.

5. Stay Flexible

Life is dynamic, and so are you. Be willing to adjust your goals as you grow and gain clarity.

STEP 4: PURSUING GOALS WITH CONVICTION

Setting goals is only half the battle; pursuing them with conviction requires consistent effort and a resilient mindset.

You are

your

greatest asset. Invest in yourself, and the return will be extraordinary...

1. Adopt a GSD Mindset

As outlined in my Goal Set Done (GSD) Workbook, this means committing to daily action. Head to www.nikkifogdenmoore.com/ founderfitnessgsd to find out more!

2. Visualise Success

Spend a few minutes each day visualising yourself achieving your goal. This trains your brain to believe it’s possible and keeps your motivation high.

3. Build a Support System

Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision.

4. Embrace the Journey

Success isn’t just about the destination; it’s about who you become along the way.

Celebrate small wins and learn from setbacks.

Master Your Life. Accelerate Your Success.

Passing

THE BATON

An award-winning local college is entering a new era. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer discovers how the outgoing principal’s legacy has paved the way for an exciting new chapter filled with innovation, promise and opportunity.

St Andrew’s Anglican College in Peregian Springs was founded in 2003, and Principal Reverend Chris Ivey has been at its helm since 2007 – so it’s safe to say that, after 18 years in the role, his leadership is woven into the very fabric of this award-winning educational institution.

But this January, he’ll be passing the baton on to new Principal Karen Gorrie, who has worked in the education sector for more than 30 years and will be joining the school from St Margaret’s Anglican College in Brisbane, where she served as Deputy Principal for seven years.

Chris has been a hugely influential leader in the school community and the educational landscape of the Sunshine Coast, and his many years of service leave an enduring legacy that’s being celebrated by students, staff and alumni as he moves to his new role as Headmaster of Somerset College on the Gold Coast.

St Andrew’s Anglican College was a very different place when Chris started back in 2007.

“I was excited by the energy,” he recalled. “It was young, growing and evolving, and the staff had what we called a ‘pioneering spirit’. My vision from day one was to make this an incredible school, to build on the foundations of such a positive culture, knowing that this enabled students to thrive. I was also looking forward to a new challenge, and to living in a beautiful place while we raised our family of four children.”

Fast-forward to today and St Andrew’s is highly regarded as an example of educational excellence, not just on the Sunshine Coast, but throughout Australia – having won numerous awards, most recently Secondary School of the Year (non-government) at the Australian Education Awards, the leading independent awards event in the K-12 education sector.

While the school itself has evolved dramatically during this time, Chris’ educational philosophy remains true.

“I still believe that relationships are core to all we do – you can’t teach, encourage or have a difficult conversation with a student if you don’t have some form of relationship with them,” he said. “Sure, the world has changed in 18 years and post-COVID we are seeing an increase in challenges regarding mental health and social media, but people still have a basic need to be known and respected.”

It’s a philosophy that resonates strongly with incoming Principal Karen Gorrie, who’s excited to build on Chris’ legacy of community and connection.

“I genuinely believe students want to be ‘noticed’,” she said. “I think that in an age where more and more people interact on devices, it is important to build a culture that ensures people are truly engaging with each other, whether it’s in the classroom or outside.

PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

“I would like to ensure that every student feels they have a voice and a role to play in our school’s success.”

For Karen, a huge part of achieving this will be collaborative growth.

“A strong school culture is one where students, teachers and staff work together as a team, continuously learning from each other,” she enthused.

“I like to encourage open communication where teachers share best practices, students feel comfortable asking questions, and families are engaged partners in the education of their children.”

From his many happy years at the college, there are a few key memories of student achievement and personal growth that stick out for Chris.

“I’ll never forget the achievements of our Kokoda Challenge teams – to see them training over many months and finishing the race in around nine hours was impressive,” he said. “In terms of academic achievements, I taught a Year 10 English class in 2011 and one young man had so much potential but was wasting his time. I remember telling him how successful he could be if he made some better choices, and when he walked out of here in Year 12 having achieved

... a culture where students, staff, and families feel valued, supported and empowered.

great results, I was so proud.

“I also recall the year we beat Matthew Flinders Anglican College at the Eisteddfod! The concert band worked hard for many years to try and when they won that accolade, it was great to see the hard work and dedication pay off.”

Reflecting on how his leadership has impacted the school’s community over the years, Chris said he was proud of how he has helped take St Andrew’s to the next level.

“We’ve gone from a small start-up school to an award-winning institution that’s recognised around the country,” he said. “All I can hope for is that my leadership has encouraged others to strive for, and achieve, great things.”

As the new school year approaches, incoming principal Karen is excited to

hit the ground running and add her own distinctive perspective to guide the college's growth and evolution.

“I loved my own school experience –I had some inspirational teachers myself, and I think I learnt early on that I liked people and always wanted to have a positive and inspiring impact on them,” she said.

“St Andrew’s is such a wonderful college with a supportive and engaged community.

“As I step into the role of principal, one of my key goals is to build on the positive relationships and sense of community that already exists within the school. I want to continue fostering a culture where students, staff, and families feel valued, supported and empowered.”

Since opening its doors earlier this year, The Station has evolved into a “third place” where people can gather to enjoy good music, good food and good times. Melanie Rosettenstein discovers what makes it so magical.

Good Times DESTINATION:

A ‘third space’ is a familiar, comfortable space outside of work and home where people of all ages can gather to connect over shared interests and activities.

After opening its doors earlier this year, The Station, which spans one multi-purpose hectare in Birtinya, has become just this; a vibrant hive of activity where people can experience events, markets, food and the best live music on the Sunshine Coast, any time, any day of the week!

If there’s anything co-owners and husband and wife duo, Lauren and Chris Hignett, have learnt over the past year, it’s that a large multi-purpose venue like The Station can successfully deliver events of all shapes and sizes (sometimes multiple events at a time), making it the ultimate hub for collaboration, connection and community.

“Having worked with local artists, artisans and performers, we’ve realised the value of collaboration,” Lauren said.

“By bringing local talent into the spotlight, we’ve strengthened our identity and built strong ties with the Sunshine Coast’s creative scene.

“These experiences have reinforced our mission to make art, music, and culture accessible, leading to more partnerships with both artists and local not-for-profit organisations.”

You just have to look at The Station’s amazing lineup over the past few months to see how the space stands out from the rest. From hosting Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry as one of the signature

events for The Curated Plate to the electric energy of pop band Sheppard, The Station has become a go-to for diverse events and festivals.

Guests have enjoyed everything from paint-and-sip workshops and a powerful Rising Up Film Festival to unique experiences like the Loud and Clear Conference and workshops for people with disabilities.

Tribute shows to iconic bands like Queen, INXS, ABBA and Fleetwood Mac, along with memorable events like the corporate Dodgeball Competition for charity, keep the energy alive. Weekly mainstays like Beats Bingo, paint-andsip sessions, and Friday night family movies add to its buzzing calendar, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

In addition to incredible events, The Station is host to a thriving foodie scene. This year, they’ve also launched a new dessert bar and expanded their café and BBQ dining options. With everything from slow-cooked BBQ to vegetarian noodle bowls, it offers a unique and easy dining experience that appeals to locals and tourists alike, from service providers Lauren and Chris have dubbed “The Food Gods”. Plus, you don’t need to be attending a concert or event to visit.

If you’re hungry and hanging out for something sweet, savoury and delicious, just rock up!

In addition to their partnership with Cerge, Chris and Lauren will be levelling up their focus on inclusivity, starting with an exciting new partnership with

Team Music Care, a non-profit that provides therapeutic music experiences for people with disabilities.

They will continue to prioritise accessibility and ensure that their community events are mostly free to attend, with ticketed events planned only for special occasions like New Year’s Eve.

“We aim to create a sense of belonging that also allows visitors to engage with the space at their own pace, whether they’re attending an event or just coming to enjoy the vibe,” Lauren explained.

Other plans include a community garden and the Sunday Markets featuring handmade goods and fresh local produce.

PHOTOS:
...a community hub where people can come together to celebrate, connect and enjoy....

“The Sunday Markets transition into afternoons of live music that create a day-long experience and will encourage people to linger and enjoy the space for longer,” said Lauren.

The long-term vision? Lauren and Chris plan to host ever more diverse events and, with Council’s support increase their capacity from 2,000 to 3,000 people.

“We want to continue building on our role as a community hub where people can come together to celebrate, connect and enjoy all our activities and experiences on offer,” concluded Lauren.

With strong relationships in place after a successful first year, The Station has realised its vision of becoming a diverse and creative space that people from all corners of the community can enjoy.

Now that’s true connection!

Amaze-ing TIMES FOR TEAMS

Looking for a corporate or social team-building session or event that’s as fun as it is unforgettable? We know just the place – and it’s definitively amaze-ing, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer. All work and no play makes for a very dull person, which is why it’s important to occasionally step out of the office, say ‘see ya’ to the spreadsheets, stick on your out of office, and share some laughs with your workmates!

Corporate team-building sessions come with a host of benefits, including increased productivity and enhanced workplace dynamics, thanks to the sense of trust and camaraderie they create. And the best way to do this is by making it a good time for everyone – even the ones who think they don’t like team-building!

Nowhere on the Sunshine Coast knows fun like Amaze World, which has been transformed from the Bellingham Maze of decades ago, into a sensational, slick, award-winning attraction that’s positively brimming with fun for all.

In addition to birthday parties and special occasions, corporate teams and social groups are welcome to hire the expansive venue out-of-hours for large themed or tailored events under the

stars, or for smaller groups, a daytime space can be reserved for you to gather, dine, host a workshop and, most importantly, embrace your inner child through the many exciting experiences!

When our fun-loving Business Development Manager Jakki had a significant birthday coming up, we knew there was only one place to spend it, so we reached out to Amaze World to arrange our very own Hello Sunshine team-building morning to celebrate.

There were squeals of excitement as Jakki arrived for her birthday surprise and walked throught the Magic Waterfall entry. We sharpened our wit with the brain teasers enroute over the lush rainforest bridge to get our caffeine fix and our game faces on.

From the observation deck overlooking the maze and other activities, we planned our adventure for the day.

First up, 18-hole mini golf, where we battled it out to see who had the best and most patient putt to score an elusive

PHOTOS: MEGAN GILL

hole-in-one (spoiler: it wasn’t me).

Next, we headed to the star of the show: the huge, impressively manicured, geometric Lilly Pilly hedge maze, which is beautiful to behold and lots of fun to navigate. To maximise team building, we paired up in a race against wit and wonder to get to the middle. Filled with tricky twists and turns, Jakki and I reached many a maddening dead-end before eventually arriving triumphant at the viewing platform in the centre!

We then mixed up our pairs where half our team were blindfolded in the maze, and the others directed them from the deck, guiding them the right way as they stumbled along, trying to escape. Relying solely on our teammates for guidance, we found ourselves laughing, trusting and communicating like never before –team-building at its finest!

Everyone was feeling a bit peckish after all the excitement and running around, so we retreated to a waterside pergola to graze snacks while relaxing, laughing and talking about anything other than work.

The tyre maze was surprisingly hilarious, and while we were sad we didn’t have time for the rope maze –where you’re attached to a coloured rope and have to wind and weave your way

through the tangle as you try to beat your friends – it just means we’ll have to go back another time!

The adventure doesn’t end there: you’ll also find floor puzzles, challenges, riddles, word games and augmented reality elements - with dragons, unicorns and other magical creaturesscattered around Amaze World’s lush, tropical gardens, which means your group can play for hours.

With its relaxing ambience, incredibly varied range of activities, on-site licensed café, huge deck and friendly, accommodating staff, your team will be amazed by their time at Amaze World. Let the games begin!

Whether you’re planning a staff or social team-building session, organising an event or just looking to discover your inner child, Amaze World offers an experience that’s anything but ordinary. Contact them to arrange your tailored visit and let the fun begin!

The City SUMMER IN

Summer is more than sandy, seaside days; it can also be full of flavour, fun and future opportunities. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer explores the latest on offer in the Maroochydore City Centre.

Imagine strolling between premium dining destinations, sprawling parklands, vibrant markets and an impressive business precinct, all just a stone’s throw from our famously beautiful coastline.

That’s the vision for Maroochydore City Centre, a masterplanned project that’s well underway to becoming an innovative city of the future.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said, “Maroochydore City Centre is emerging as a commercial hub, attracting businesses and creating thousands of local jobs.”

One exciting project underway is 50 First Avenue, a premium, state-ofthe-art, 15-floor commercial tower that’s due for completion in 2025.

Accommodating over 1,000 workers, its sleek, contemporary design, high-speed data connectivity and industry-leading sustainability credentials will make it a hub for global business and talent, anchored by technology and innovation.

Work is well underway on the $100 million Maroochy Private Hospital which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This ten-storey, world-class medical, educational and research institution will feature six cutting-edge operating theatres and high-quality ward accommodation for 45 in-patients.

SOL by Walker is another hotly anticipated development that’s set to bring luxe living to the heart of Maroochydore. This exclusive collection of residences will include 251 one, twoand three-bedroom apartments, along with four-bedroom penthouses, all featuring bespoke resort-style architecture and amenities.

It’s no wonder Maroochydore City Centre was awarded the Strategic Planning Project Award for Excellence at the recent Queensland Awards for Planning

Excellence. In partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and SunCentral, Walker is leading the development and delivery of the project. Managing Director and CEO David Gallant said they were proud to receive the award, which recognised the enhanced placemaking and city making outcomes for the Maroochydore City Centre.

“The masterplan blends more than 18-hectares of lakes and parklands with homes, offices, restaurants, cafes and community amenities so you can live in a city surrounded by all the lifestyle benefits, and still be only a short walk to some of the best beaches in the country,” he said.

SunCentral CEO Amanda Yeates said, “Maroochydore City Centre is setting a new benchmark for urban renewal, demonstrating what can be achieved when innovative planning and sustainable design come together.”

Walking the tree-lined boulevards of the Maroochydore City Centre, you can see the world-class city start to emerge before your very eyes, and it’s exciting to think of the energy and opportunity that Sunshine Coast residents and visitors will enjoy and benefit from in the future.

For now, the City Centre is already a

wonderful place to live, work and play with fantastic restaurants like Market Bistro, Giddy Geisha and Bottarga; cafès such as Harvest and The Colombian Coffee Co; the award-winning Sunshine Coast Council City Hall; installations by local First Nations artists; and a plethora of other businesses that are already making this a vibrant destination.

The MET (Metropolitan) is a purposebuilt space designed to soak up the laid-back Sunshine Coast vibe.

From artisan and food markets to wellness events and activities, live music, and more, The MET is at the heart of the Maroochydore City Centre with an always-evolving and exciting program of community events, exhibitions, and cultural experiences, offering an unique destination where people can connect, relax, and unwind together.

Whether it’s the innovative vision of today or the exciting promise of tomorrow, Maroochydore City Centre is designed for the community. Here’s to many more seasons of fun, flavour and opportunity! One thing’s certain – the future is bright.

Getaway A GREEN

The Sunshine Coast’s premier resort just got a whole lot greener, discovers Melanie Rosettenstein.

Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort is an absolute gem in our community - welcoming guests from across Australia and beyond, hosting premier events and conferences, and offering locals a slice of resort-style relaxation right on our doorstep.

Through their innovative WasteMaster waste management system, water conservation initiatives and commitment to eliminating single use plastics, the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort has always been at the forefront of sustainability.

And, now they’ve taken it up a notch by partnering with non-profit treeplanting platform Reforest and Visit Sunshine Coast’s sustainability program.

Portfolio Director of Brand, Marketing, Digital and Communications, Suzy

Raymer said they wanted to empower guests to understand the environmental impacts and to play an active role in protecting the coastline by giving them the option to buy a tree, which is then planted in the Cooroy Mountain Wildlife Corridor.

The chance to buy trees is open to conference delegates and hotel guests, and since the launch of the program in September 2024, more than 34 native trees have already been planted.

“It doesn’t get more local than this and we are so pleased to reassure our guests – whether day visitors, staying overnight, or enjoying a holiday – that their stay directly contributes to the sustainability of our Sunshine Coast environment,” Suzy said.

Looking to 2025, the Novotel will be hosting some firm favourites such as their signature Bush to Coast High Tea, which is available in the stylish Sola bar every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 2pm.

“The high teas have become especially

popular amongst our locals for special celebrations such as bridal and baby showers, Mother’s Day and birthdays,” she said.

February will mark the Month of Love with Valentine’s Day events for the entire month, providing the perfect place to make love-filled memories.

Also available to Sunny Coasters are the Novotel’s midweek day passes, which allow locals to explore and enjoy the

resort and its facilities.

“This means that if you’re a local, you can come and enjoy a meal on site, take a swim in the pool, go for a sail on one of our catamarans, or get involved with some of the many options available at our activity centre,” explained Suzy.

On the business front, the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre, which forms part of the resort, now has a fresh look and feel.

Committed to delivering unforgettable experiences, whether corporate or social, the centre has a plethora of adaptable spaces designed for everything from intimate board meetings to gala balls.

“The centre has become especially popular for social events where we’ve been hosting celebrations such as engagement parties, weddings and

milestone birthdays,” Suzy said.

“We can offer the whole package, including accommodation and associated activities.”

There’s so much to enjoy at the Novotel for both holidaymakers and locals!

Stay in the loop by signing up for their e-newsletter or following their social media pages to catch all the latest specials and opportunities to indulge - whether it’s for a meal, a sneaky overnight stay or a well-deserved extended holiday.

Storyteller

While it’s said that everyone has a book inside them, not many of us ever have the tenacity to bring our ideas to life.

But for Dan Munday, former producer of the US show Survivor and co-founder of Sunny Coast Showdown, the characters of Frank and Stein – two resourceful, creative kids who work together to transform discarded soft toys into superhero hybrid creations – stayed with him for a few years before he was compelled to bring them to life.

“While I was bushwalking at Mount Tinbeerwah one day, I watched a chook and a kookaburra having a scuffle and the word ‘Chookaburra’ popped into my head. It made me chuckle, and was soon followed by ‘Kangamoo’, ‘Crabbit’ and ‘Raterpiller,’” he said.

“As the list of characters grew, so did their world. Where did these creatures come from? They were sort of

Frankenstein-esque, which led to the idea of two kids named Frank and Stein who make new toys out of broken ones.

“These characters sat at the back of my mind for about four years, until I found myself in hospital for a couple of weeks and finally began writing their story.”

The words flowed easily, and before Dan knew it he’d written a funny, engaging, uniquely Australian rhyming tale – something he describes as “Dr Seuss meets Monty Python with an environmental and social bent”.

Of course, every kids’ book needs fantastic images, so Dan reached out to an illustrator in the USA to help him storyboard the first edition.

He soon realised that for Frank and Stein’s world - ‘Yanoosa’ (a hybrid of Yandina and Noosa, the places Dan grew up and now lives), to truly come alive and feel like home, he’d have to try and

create it himself.

“I’d been drawing since I was a kid, but nothing on this scale, so it was a very intimidating task to take on,” he recalled. “The initial drawings were so crude, and I thought I’d never get there.

“But I knew my own kids were watching me and I really wanted to practise what I preach when it comes to resilience, so I knew I had to walk the walk and ended up surprising myself.”

As Dan brought Frank and Stein to life visually, the characters subconsciously started to reflect his own kids.

“Frank's the designer of the duo because my nine-year-old son draws a lot and loves the design process, whereas Stein’s in charge of the making because my daughter is a maniac with sticky tape and loves building things,” he said.

“Seeing themselves reflected in the characters has made my kids so engaged,

...Dr Seuss meets Monty Python with an environmental and social bent.

and now they love suggesting new animal ideas and drawing them for me, which is really cool.”

The first three Frankenrhyme books, Kangamoo, Crabbit and Raterpillar, are packed with laugh-out-loud dad jokes and entertaining stories. Beyond the humour, they carry an important message, encouraging young readers to embrace recycling and creativity by repairing and reusing items instead of throwing them away.

“Our world is in an environmental tailspin, and our kids hold the key to turning it around,” Dan said. “They can pave the way toward a more sustainable future by rediscovering old-school skills like fixing, repurposing, and creating something new with what they have.

“If I can get some kids on board with fighting a fight that they're going to have to fight, then that’s powerful.”

Growing up on a farm in Yandina, Dan came from a family of recyclers, where most things were secondhand and repurposed. This came in handy during his time as a producer on Survivor, where he used many of the same skills that Frank and Stein rely on, including problem-solving and transforming existing materials into something new.

“My whole Survivor career was about putting two strange things together to make a Survivor Challenge,” he recalls. “We'd often be shooting in the middle of nowhere with no resources and the timber shipment was late, and we’d have to think ‘What have we got around us?’ so making something from nothing was really my superpower.”

As the final piece of the puzzle (or the final piece of the mutant animal?), Dan's mum recently surprised him with his favourite childhood kangaroo that she’d kept for more than 40 years.

It showed that Dan had tried to repair his toy as a child by adding a coathanger into its neck and stitching it up.

“Discovering that as an eight-yearold, I had effectively ‘Frankensteined’ my own toy was quite a weird, full-circle moment for me,” Dan explained.

Not to be outdone, Dan’s mum has now taken up the family repurposing mantle, saving broken toys from thrift shops and transforming them into ‘Granny Munday’s Mutant Monsters’, which Dan gifts to children at markets when selling his books.

Dan has nine more Frankenrhyme books in the works and plans to release one every quarter for the next couple of years, as well as speaking at local schools and running workshops for kids to introduce them to the magic of making new things from old.

“I love talking to kids because they’re engaging, their ideas are brilliant, and they’re open to new ideas,” he said. “I’ve worked on so many shows over the years that are fun and entertaining but don’t really mean anything in the grand scheme of things, so I’m really glad to be creating this – it’s a message that feels important.”

Memories IN FOCUS

Garricks Camera House is not just the place to pick up the best gear on the coast, it’s a community-centred hub for budding and professional photographers, videographers and content creators. Melanie Rosettenstein focuses on the full story.

Five years ago, Adam Walters and his young family returned to the Sunshine Coast to open his Maroochydore store. Located on Plaza Parade, the story of Garricks Camera House began with a buyout 15 years ago which has led to Adam now owning and running multiple stores across Queensland.

Explaining the history of the business, Adam said a major competitor made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.

“They wanted to open next door or buy us out,” he said. “We chose the buyout option and left the Sunshine Coast for Townsville.

“From there, we expanded Garricks Camera House across Queensland and when we saw the Sunshine Coast population had doubled, we realised the market was ready and so, we returned to open our Maroochydore location.

“It’s been growing steadily ever since.”

Besides the great timing, it was also the pull of family that brought the Walters and their young son back to settle in Alexandra Headland. And while much has changed on the Sunshine

When customers choose us, they know their memories are in good hands...

Coast, a lot has also changed at Garricks Camera House.

“Our business is no longer the realm of mums and dads buying their first camera to capture their new baby or a big event,” Adam says. “We’ve become a space that very much caters to professionals and enthusiasts.

“These, together with social media influencers and content creators, make up about 80% of our customers.

“The other 20% includes older generations seeking to preserve their memories through old film processing, printing, restoration, archiving, evolved films and video transfers.”

To meet the demands of such a wide range of services, from cameras to lenses

and tripods to film, Adam ensures he’s up to date on technology and the equipment he supplies.

Most importantly, he has a team of experts who provide top-notch customer service, which is Garricks Camera House’s point of difference.

“It’s not about competing on price; it’s about building trust,” he says. “When customers choose us, they know their memories are in good hands, and they’ll receive the highest level of service.”

On how the world of photography has changed, Adam reveals that it has come full circle with the surprising comeback of 35mm film, especially amongst those aged from 15 to 25 who love the vintage aesthetic of disposable cameras.

“I think this new generation of photographers is searching for a nostalgic look with photos that are grainy and raw,” he said.

This seems like a far cry from the filters and enhancements of digital photography, but Adam and his team have adapted to meet this demand, offering film processing with faster turnaround times than competitors and

embracing the needs of customers who are enjoying traditional photography.

Adam also keeps up with industry trends by leveraging Camera House’s national footprint, keeping close to suppliers and adopting modern technologies.

Locally, he is very active in the community through various initiatives like sponsoring the Sunny Coast Showdown, the Noosa International Surf Film Festival and organising community workshops and international photography trips.

“We just sent 10 customers between the ages of 22 and 60 to Japan with some of our staff and Sony ambassadors,” he said. “They had a five-day adventure focused on street photography and videography, covering up to 20 kms a day and exploring iconic locations.”

Looking to the future, Adam says Artificial Intelligence is playing a huge role, making cameras smarter by predicting movement and focussing ahead of time.

For video, he says there will be an easier integration of footage from your camera to your social media.

However, he adds that there has also been significant growth in the second-

hand market, where people can get their hands on high-quality equipment at lower prices.

“The market for second-hand cameras is driven by cost-conscious customers and the fact that older technology is still highly functional,” he explained.

As for why the photo and video industry continues to thrive, Adam simply replied, “It’s all about memories. The emotional value, whether for

personal enjoyment or sharing with others, is at the heart of why people invest in cameras.”

And to keep up with the demand, Adam and his team remain adaptable by being early adopters of new products and trends, constantly monitoring customer feedback and adjusting their inventory and services to match changing needs.

Capture your nostalgic moments with Garricks Camera House!

The doors to Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry were thrown open to showcase the region’s flavours to Tourism and Events executives and leaders. Deb Caruso took a peek inside the pantry to see what was on offer.

Perfection PANTRY

A bit of rain did not dampen the enthusiasm and passion of Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry producers who brought the sunshine and fresh flavours to Australia Zoo’s Ironbark Paddock to impress Executives of Tourism Australia and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Coordinated by Visit Sunshine Coast and Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN), the event showcased the region’s delicious depth of flavours, creativity and commitment to sustainability.

From chocolate to condiments, honey and jams, mushrooms and meats; therapeutic tea, delicious dairy and global award-wining rum and gin, the event offered the chance for tourism executives to hear the stories of local producers and more importantly, to taste the delicious treats from the region.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said the Sunshine Coast was cementing its reputation as a leading food, drink and agritourism destination.

“There’s 19 of our amazing 900 producers showing their produce to the TEQ Board and Directors,” he said. “We hope that they leave with a renewed understanding of why we’re a premier food, drink and agricultural destination.”

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said the Sunshine Coast was an exceptionally delicious place to be.

“This is a place that’s punching well above its weight,” she said. “Well done everyone!”

Local SHOW YOUR

Love

Crafting a meal from the finest local ingredients is the ultimate way to show appreciation for your loved ones and our local producers this summer, Melanie

My in-laws used to own a vegetable farm and, every time we visited, my fatherin-law would usher me to the kitchen to proudly show me what he was cooking up.

Whether it was a stew from the local butcher or roast veggies from the farm, he was making more than a meal – he was showing his love for his family and respect for local producers and the products made with passion.

Sunny Coasters looking to express their love this Christmas and throughout summer need look no further than amazing champions of all things local, White’s IGA, whose stores can be found at Peregian Beach, Mount Coolum, Bli Bli, Forest Glen, Mooloolah and Baringa.

Through their Locavore program, White’s IGA connects local producers with consumers, strengthening local food networks, enriching health and improving the local economy.

Operations Manager Regan Jensen said to make things easier, they’ve released a range of Christmas recipes with plenty of inspiration for a wonderful spread.

“They feature the finest produce and ingredients sourced from nearby farmers and artisans,” she enthused.

Picture show-stopping, succulent ham from Barry’s Family Butchers at Peachester, glazed with Buderim Ginger marmalade; honey-glazed Dutch carrots with The Bee Man Honey; creamy trifles layered with Maleny Dairies custard and fresh strawberries; and indulgent cheese platters featuring handcrafted delights from Woombye Cheese and Kenilworth Dairies.

And let’s not forget the freshest pavlova made locally by Country Chef and piled high with luscious cream and

fresh seasonal fruit!

“Every dish is infused with a story, with recipes passed down through generations, like Roz’s Sensational Seafood Sauce or Mama’s Christmas Punch,” Regan said. “It’s a Christmas table that doesn’t just taste amazing but also supports local producers and strengthens the community.”

From locally-made pâté and Silver Tongue crackers to Christmas cakes and fruit mince pies - and everything in between, White’s IGA makes for a truly merry and bright way to spread joy to your loved ones and the farmers and producers who make it all possible.

Elevate your summer BBQ with White’s IGA’s top-quality range from renowned Nolan Meats, and sausages made right here in Maroochydore that are absolutely to die for.

“We also source and sell locally-made condiments that are made to impress at any BBQ or summer feast,” Regan said. “And, very often our local prawns are cheaper than at the fishery.”

Fresh, full-of-flavour and easy!

The Locavore program extends beyond food and offers sun-smart protection from locally produced, Indigenousowned Ochre Sun sunscreen. And if your celebration goes into the evening, keep the mozzies and midgies at bay with Vanilla Mozi all-natural insect repellent.

For thoughtful gifts, including looking ahead to Valentine’s Day, White’s IGA will have everything you need for a romantic tête-à-tête, including artisan chocolates, gifts and the freshest flowers.

“We support local suppliers which means the flowers stay fresher for longer,” Regan said. What a blooming good way to brighten your home or make

HOW/WHY DID YOU BECOME A CHEF?

I love to eat and the first question I can remember asking my mum is “what’s for dinner I’m hungry?!”

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

Originally from Sydney, I’ve been cooking for 25 years in over 65 different restaurants in countries including Canada, Korea, and Australia.

I’ve been in Noosa over 12 years but the most rewarding moment - by a twist of fate - was meeting my beautiful wife Tania while working together at a restaurant in Canada.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A CHEF?

Being around good food every day. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LOCAL PRODUCE?

The freshness and flavour.

WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO FOOD?

I like to take the time to do a little bit extra to each part of the dish, people will notice the end result.

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO COOK FOR?

My Nan was a huge part of my childhood, she was a great cook always making treats for us, so I would love to make her a dinner. A hot plate was a must!

WHO IS YOUR CULINARY INSPIRATION?

Lots of my head chefs over the yearstoo many to mention so here’s a shout out to all of you!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO COOK AT HOME?

With my two kids, my daughter Xanthe, 12, and son Winter, 10, we try and eat healthy - but we do like a good beef burger cooked on the BBQ by the pool.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DISH?

Fresh seafood, slipper lobsters or Moreton Bay Bugs - chargrilled.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING IN NOOSA?

Fishing! On my boat or up the beach 4WD around, it was my dream to raise my kids here.

I’m lucky to be living it and working by the beach in a safe secure environment.

ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG CHEFS?

Travel the world to learn different cooking styles to become a stronger chef - leave the ego at the door.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE KITCHEN TOOL?

My favourite paring knife.

It’s full stainless steel by Shun and is good for so many things so I always have it handy.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE INGREDIENT?

Fresh seafood, hopefully caught by myself, particularly freshly-cooked Moreton Bay Bugs with Mango Mayo.

Ingredients:

• 25ml white wine vinegar

• 1 egg

• 1/4 tablespoon Dijon mustard

• 20ml Worcestershire sauce

• 250ml vegetable oil

• 25 grams white onion

At Hello Sunshine Magazine, we’re passionate about food, community and the power of print, so we were delighted to come onboard as the publishers of Flo’s Crêpes to help Michelle and Flo bring their ‘crêpetacular’ vision to life. With our designer Ali Smith in charge of layout, publisher Deb Caruso managing the subediting, Michelle and Flo writing the content, and photographer Florence LeMyre behind the camera, it slowly came together into a gorgeous hardcover 200-page book filled with stunning images that’s been designed to be used, referred to, loved and treasured in your kitchen for years to come.

Flo’s Crêpes makes the perfect gift for the foodie in your life, the crêpe curious, the person who has everything, your office Secret Santa, or even yourself –I’m certainly hoping for one under my tree this year.

Spice! WATCH THIS

We’re sad to be bidding farewell to one of our favourite Mooloolaba restaurants this summer – but can’t wait to see where the talented and tasty team might pop up next, writes Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer.

All good things must come to an end, and our friends at the fantastic Spice Bar in Mooloolaba – known for their modern, innovative Asian dishes and commitment to local produce – will be leaving a gaping hole in the coast’s culinary scene as they close their doors in February 2025.

This iconic restaurant, with its stunning ocean views, has been around for 12 years, with Chef Sophie Phipps and her husband Luke Duncalf at the helm for the past 18 months. But as the building gets demolished to make way for shiny new apartments, it’s the end of an incredibly rewarding chapter for Sophie and her team – as well as hopefully, the start of something new.

“This is the end of Spice Bar in its current location, which feels quite emotional for us and certainly for some of our customers who’ve been coming here for more than a decade,” Sophie said. “We’re not sure what’s in store for the future, but the team and I are looking into some exciting options. Stay tuned!”

Spice Bar will be going out with a bang to rival the Mooloolaba New Year’s Eve fireworks, with an exciting summer of celebrations on the cards.

If you’ve always wanted to enjoy a cocktail in the VIP Spice Lounge, then the Spice Bar New Year’s Eve soirée on Tuesday 31 December is your chance! Choose from the early-seating four-

and ocean views – December is almost booked out and January and February are filling up as we speak!” Sophie said. “And if you have any favourite dishes from Spice Bar over the years, let us know and we’ll try to recreate them with our own twist.”

As she reflects on this chapter, Sophie would like to thank the local community, her customers, and the suppliers and producers she’s dealt with over the years.

“I fell in love with the Sunshine Coast through Spice Bar and all the amazing people I’ve been so lucky to meet during my time here,” she said.

She’s especially thankful for her team of 10, who have been behind her 100% when it comes to realising her vision.

“I really do have the most beautiful team. We are like family,” she exclaimed. “They’re keen to follow me to my next venture, which would be really special.”

As Spice Bar’s story comes to a close, its legacy lives on in the memories of those who’ve dined there, the connections it has fostered, and the anticipation of what’s next for Sophie and her crew.

So it’s goodbye to Spice Bar as we know it, and thanks for all the good times!

FEASTS OF

Flavour

Deb Caruso discovers sumptuous sister restaurants that are bringing global flavours of the world to Ocean Street.

Recently celebrating its third birthday, Japanese charcoal restaurant Soka on Ocean Street, Maroochydore continues to set the culinary scene on fire with its balance of smoke, heat, and fresh flavours straight off the charcoal.

Char-grilled corn with salted ricotta, teriyaki mayo and shichimi is a must-do starter. Likewise, the chicken karaage, Wagyu tataki with a marble score of 7+ with truffle dressing, daikon and negi; or the pork katsu sando, a Japanese crunch pork sandwich.

There are so many more dishes to consider but the Raw Bar demands your attention with a range of the freshest fish, expertly prepared.

Sashimi moriawase with 10 or 15 pieces is hard to resist with melt-in-yourmouth tuna, salmon, kingfish and scallops that show the freshness of the produce and the skill of the Head Chef Kenji, who has two decades of experience delivering Japanese Hibachi Grill Cuisine.

Kushiyaki (two skewers) is calling with tempting options straight off the charcoal grill, or opt for a more substantial plate with a selection of traditional dishes for a heartier appetite.

Sides are a match made in heaven and expertly designed to accompany the meals - or as a meal on their own.

Save room for dessert, particularly the coconut sorbet with lychee and raspberry granita; or matcha tiramisu with caramelised white chocolate.

If you’re finding it hard to decide, a choice of banquets makes the decision easy, particularly with dedicated options for a range of dietary needs.

With its slick service and sleek interior plus a cracking cocktail and drinks list, Soka has built a strong and loyal following of diners seeking a slice of Japan on the Sunshine Coast.

With the success of Soka and an understanding of the Sunshine Coast’s appetite for authentic food experiences, the stage (or table) was set for another venue next door to Soka on Ocean Street.

Enter Lyra, a modern Greek restaurant, offering dishes crafted with the finest local and seasonal ingredients and with the same attention to authenticity and service that Soka has become known for.

It might seem simple, however it is

Lyra’s dips and complimentary pita bread that attract the rave reviews. All dips are made in house including tzatziki, taramasalata and hummus (of course!).

Moving onto Mezedes and Mains, expect all the crowd pleasers from grilled octopus, cheese Saganaki with Graviera cheese, fig jam and lemon; Soutzoukakia (meatballs) and melt-in-your mouth 12-hour slow-cooked lamb shoulder with tzatziki that is made for sharing.

Each venue is unique in its own way and true to the culinary traditions of its heritage, yet bound by a commitment to exceptional service and quality ingredients that are treated respectfully.

Eggplant Moussaka or Triple Mushroom Moussaka is always popular, and the fresh and vibrant watermelon salad or marinated tomato salad will transport you to a European summer quicker than you can say “Naí!”.

The Moreton Bay Bug pasta is a global fusion with perfectly cooked pasta and local Moreton Bay Bugs delivering rich flavours, with a hint of the ocean.

Again, leaving room for dessert is essential, especially when a Baklava ice

cream sandwich is on offer!

It’s no wonder Lyra has been packed out since opening. Be sure to book. Yamas for cocktails!

Both venues are respectful of dietary needs with gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options clearly marked and aplenty.

Spoilt for choice and can’t decide? Banquets are terrific options with dietary needs catered for.

Each venue is unique in its own way and true to the culinary traditions of its heritage, yet bound by a commitment to exceptional service and quality ingredients that are treated respectfully. It seems you can have the best of both worlds, right here on Ocean Street. The only thing you need to decide is whether to take your tastebuds on a tour to Greece or Japan.

Either way, you’re winning.

Spring! HELLO

The vibes were high as we launched the Spring Edition of Hello Sunshine Magazine and Village Vibes! Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer recaps a sensational spring fling.

There’s no place like Peregian Beach Hotel’s dreamy Il Porto bar - especially on a perfectly balmy spring evening. We gathered with our wonderful clients, contributors, suppliers and friends to launch the Spring Issue of Hello Sunshine Magazine and our 24/25 edition of Village Vibes: The Essential Guide to Peregian Beach - and, oh, what a celebration it was! Guests sipped on a delicious welcome cocktail using our limited edition Wild Peach Gin from Sunshine & Sons, the wine and craft beers were flowing, and we mingled and chatted on the outdoor deck as the setting sun cast a pink-hued glow over the festivities.

Our vibrant cover art by artist Alice West caught everyone’s eye, and we loved hearing from Peregian Beach Hotel owner and Peregian Beach Business Association President Kylie Plunkett, who is passionate about sharing the magic of this very special village.

A memorable evening with magic moments and good friends!

GIVE THE GIFT OF

Goodness

Gifting season is upon us, and who wouldn’t be thrilled with chocolate, particularly handcrafted creations made right here in the region?! Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer taste-tests her way around Noosa Chocolate Factory to discover what makes it the go-to destination for sweet gifts for every occasion.

Searching for crowd-pleasing gift ideas for the loved ones in your life? The answer is always chocolate – specifically, chocolate handcrafted at Noosa Chocolate Factory.

This much-loved local business has a well-earned reputation for quality, flavour, locally-sourced ingredients, sustainability and making their products with a whole lot of love.

The handcrafted, small-batch chocolates are worlds away from massproduced, mainstream offerings, with a focus on premium ingredients and thoughtful sourcing that ensures every bite tells a story that goes far beyond the wrapper.

Where possible, ingredients are sourced from within Queensland, and the company loves supporting local suppliers, many of whom they’ve been buying from since the beginning – think fresh Queensland strawberries, pineapples, Sunshine Coast macadamias, Kingaroy peanuts and lots more local loveliness.

When you step inside the solarpowered factory in Noosa, complete with the smell of warm chocolate bubbling in giant vats, you’ll see that every chocolatey treat is crafted by hand by skilled artisan chocolate makers who carefully pour, spread, cut, mould and decorate each piece to perfection (while somehow managing to not eat it all – surely that’s a Christmas miracle?!).

Speaking of the holiday season, Noosa Chocolate Factory rolls out a stunning array of festive-themed goodies that will delight sweet tooths big and small, such as colourful baubles, irresistibly adorable reindeer, giant love hearts, and plenty more cute and creative offerings that make the perfect thoughtful gift for kids, loved ones, friends, teachers, your other half, or basically anyone with tastebuds.

But it’s not just about Christmas – Noosa Chocolate Factory also goes all out for Valentine’s Day and Easter with super-sweet on-theme delights just made for surprising your main squeeze and your little loves. For Valentine’s Day,

PHOTO: THE COMMS PEOPLE

you can’t go wrong with any of their products, from decadent slabs and delicious balls to giant hearts in a range of flavours and love-themed gift boxes.

Easter delivers the sweetest bunnies you’ll ever see in a range of sizes and colours (my daughter would squeal with delight over the cute pink one), plus handcrafted Easter eggs, all-time favourity Rocky Road eggs, yellow chocolate chickens and so much more!

Got a birthday to buy for? Create your own gift pack from Noosa Chocolate Factory’s signature goodies – choose from popular items like freeze-dried raspberries, black cherries, Sunshine Coast hazelnuts, Peanut Brittle and chocolate slabs in milk, dark and white – for a present that truly caters to your loved one’s unique palate. Or go big and ask Noosa Chocolate Factory to create a hamper for the gift that seriously keeps on giving.

Plus, don’t forget Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Educator’s Day, weddings, graduations, retirements, thank you gifts and ‘just because’ – whatever the occasion, Noosa Chocolate Factory is the perfect answer to your gifting dilemmas!

I’m a huge advocate for treating

yourself, so whether you’re celebrating a win at work, cheering yourself up after a hard time, or simply want something super-delicious to sample at the end of a long day, you’ll find your perfect flavour. But beware – once you’ve tried Noosa Chocolate Factory, all other chocolate brands will pale in comparison!

When you buy from Noosa Chocolate Factory, not only will you experience the true taste of the Sunshine Coast, you’ll also be supporting a wonderful local business that supports other local businesses in turn – and it doesn’t get much sweeter than that!

No Place Like THERE’S

NAMBOUR

An eclectic hub for culture, creativity and community, Nambour is shaping up to lead the way when it comes to Sunshine Coast cool, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer. With its quirky street art, retro and vintage stores, lively music and arts scene, and handy hinterland location, Nambour’s star is seriously on the rise.

There’s been an explosion of creativity recently in this once-forgotten town, with innovative community events, independent shops and businesses, fantastic cafes and a growing cultural heartbeat attracting visitors from across the coast and beyond.

Wandering the streets, you’ll discover a variety of businesses run by passionate people, including institutions like Mr Beesleys Vintage Clothing and Backbeat Records; cool cafes such as Nambour Social and Small Change Espresso; and there’s the Old Ambo Station which is a hub for creative expression and exhibitions.

An essential element to any cool

community is a watering hole where the locals can come together to swap tales of old and create new memories - and any visitor can feel like ‘home’.

Enter The Namba (formerly Club Hotel Namba) – an independently owned, historic community pub that aims to bring a little slice of Noosa to Nambour.

“There’s lots of growth forecast for Nambour over the next few years, so we decided it was the right time for an elevated offering serving up excellent food and local beers in a stylish, relaxed setting,” said Zach Large, co-owner at The Namba.

“We’re starting to see attitudes shifting and excitement building about the area. It feels like a great time to be doing business here.”

The Namba is leading the culinary

scene in the area, priding itself on offering ‘more than just pub food’ with a new summer menu created by coowner and Executive Chef Wayd Bailey.

It features delights such as the Middle Eastern sumac spiced salad with shaved zucchini and pomegranate molasses; fried pork belly tossed in indo soy with slaw and hot and sour tamarind dressing; and new-season mango and avocado salad with asian herbs and house-made nam jim chilli dressing.

Plus, of course, you’ll find all the classic crowd-pleasers made to perfection using ingredients from local suppliers, including parmys, steaks, burgers and pizzas and lots more wholesome, hearty pub food.

“Wayd is known for using fresh, local, seasonal produce, and is highly respected on the Sunshine Coast thanks to his

expertise, skill and passion,” Zach said.

“From comfort food to gourmet weekly specials, we get so many compliments about our menu at The Namba – once you’ve dined here, you’re guaranteed to be back.”

This philosophy of supporting local extends to the bar, where you’ll find beers from local breweries like Your Mates, Heads of Noosa, Coolum Beer Co. and Matso’s, along with classics such as XXXX and Great Northern, plus a curated range of wines and spirits.

Open seven days a week from 11am, this family-friendly establishment is a hub for the local community, hosting trivia nights, bingo nights, and watching live sport on the big screen.

“There’s a lot of variety with the people who come through our doors,” Zach said. “We get young families, tradies, professionals, retirees and lots of artists and creatives, as well as visitors who come up on the train from Brisbane on the weekends.”

A highlight for Zach has been the local community embracing what they offer.

“We love seeing repeat customers, and receiving compliments always feels good,” he added. “It confirms we’re on the right track.”

The pub sits on the corner of Mill Street, which is the location of the annual Namba Street Fair – an epic street party organised by Sunshine Coast Music and Events with support from Sunshine Coast Council in July that brings the street to life with international food stalls, live entertainment, roving performers and a fun community vibe.

A major transformation is on the horizon as Nambour continues to evolve, with the Sunshine Coast Council’s Nambour Place Plan aiming to revitalise the town centre by introducing greener streets, broader pathways and dynamic art installations, all while creating exciting opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY FROM 11:30AM

Plus with The Majestic movie theatre set to reopen any day and the batterypowered Nambour tram on track to trundle through the town once again, there’s plenty to be excited about in the town’s future.

“I hope more emerging, young businesses will come in, contribute and ride the wave of change happening here,” Zach said. “We need to all work together and support each other.”

Nambour is on the rise, and The Namba is riding the wave. Co-owners Wayd Bailey, Shayne Daniel, and Zach Large have created a stylish destination for excellent food and local beers, perfectly capturing the town’s relaxed yet sophisticated vibe.

One thing’s for sure: the future’s bright in Nambour. Explore it today.

START YOUR DAY THE MALENY DAIRIES WAY

Three wins in any field establishes a benchmark for excellence. John Caruso discovers how a hat-trick of awards proves that authenticity, innovation, and community focus are a formula for greatness.

AWARDS,

& AUTHENTICITY Advocacy,

For Stephen Tait, CEO of Maleny Dairies, the last 12 months have been transformative. The family-owned business, in the gorgeous green hinterland hills of the Sunshine Coast, celebrated a significant milestone by earning a coveted spot in the Hall of Fame at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards after winning the Food and Agribusiness (Large) category, three years in a row.

The recognition is no small feat.

“The judges play their cards very close to their chest,” Stephen shared. “What shines through is our authentic passion for our community and the supply chain that supports us. This award reflects not just our team’s efforts but also the quality of the product we produce.”

That authenticity, the thread connecting their business ethos; community engagement; and innovative practices, is what continues to set Maleny Dairies apart.

“We focus on the economic and societal impacts we create, innovation, and ensuring sustainability for local farmers,” he said. “We’re processors, not producers, we’re the cow in the middle.

“Our core focus is on creating a financially sustainable product for our farmers because, without them, we don’t have a business.”

Maleny Dairies sources milk from local farmers, paying 15% above the industry average to ensure their viability.

“When you pick up a bottle of our milk, you’re supporting a network of family businesses and communities,” he said. “That commitment to local farmers and our community is what drives us.”

Beyond the accolades, Maleny Dairies has also found a new way to amplify the voices of the people at the heart of its business - the farmers - by launching the Farmer Needs a Mic podcast to provide a platform for farmers to share their stories in their own words.

“The result has been phenomenal,” Stephen said. “The farmers love it, it’s fascinating, funny, and inspiring.”

The podcast delves into the heritage, challenges, and triumphs of local farmers, many of whom are part of multigenerational farming families.

“There’s a common narrative that emerges about commitment, resilience, and pride in what they do,” he said. “Let’s face it, there are easier things to do than milk cows twice a day, but they love their land, livestock and the work.”

By bridging the gap between producers and consumers, the podcast underscores Maleny Dairies’ role as an ambassador for the dairy industry.

“We believe we have a voice that can advocate for farmers,” Stephen said. “They’re too busy milking cows, but we can use our platform to push for fair pricing and to highlight their value.”

While Maleny Dairies remains deeply

rooted in its local community, it continues to innovate to meet changing consumer demands. Over the past year, the business has introduced lactose-free milk and sour cream, responding directly to customer feedback.

“Our size allows us to be dynamic,” Stephen noted. “We’re small enough to listen and adapt but large enough to implement changes effectively. This agility enables us to create awardwinning products that consumers want.”

Despite its growth, Maleny Dairies remains a family-driven business with 50 employees, and the company’s focus on community, sustainability, and quality has earned it a loyal following.

“Our story is one of connection,” Stephen said. “Whether it’s our relationships with farmers, our conversations with customers, or our advocacy for fair pricing, everything we do is about supporting the community and ensuring a sustainable future for dairy farming.

“The real reward is seeing the impact we’re making, for our farmers, our team, and our community.”

‘Tis the season for feasting! Jess Holdsworth from Greensmith Grocers shares how to live a more heart-inspired life and to infuse that philosophy into the food we eat and how we prepare it.

Inspired HEART-

I believe that we are here as humans to enjoy, celebrate and thrive and that food is a way we can nourish ourselves from the inside, out.

Cooking from the heart with joy and fun brings another layer of wellbeing to our meals that can’t be bottled or replicated. It’s what you can bring forward at that exact moment of cooking, so that our food fuels not just our body but our hearts, mind and spirit.

For me, the secret ingredient is the magic of our own creativity and intuition, and expressing that through the meals we make. It’s our own individual energy and love that can transform a simple dish into a divine offering to yourself, family and friends.

Heart-inspired cooking and eating is about finding your own truth and what feels good for you.

It’s not about the latest fad, what you think you should eat or depriving yourself and restraining yourself of the things you love.

You’ve got to find your own sense of balance and rhythm, which takes a bit of trial and error and feeling your way through. Each step, each book, each meal and every shared moment and experience brings you closer to remembering what is right for you as an individual.

Everyone has their own path and journey when it comes to food, it truly is different for each of us.

Being heart-inspired is about colour,

health, healing, fun, expression, creativity and life force.

So, don’t be too serious, have fun and have a laugh in the kitchen - even when things don’t taste quite right!

When you cook with your heart and eyes open, only joy and love can flow through you and you will be truly nourished with every meal and every mouthful.

My love for food has deep roots, tracing back to the health retreat and organic farm where I grew up. It was 100km from the shops and removed from city life.

When I wasn’t at school, I spent any spare time I had in the kitchen peeling potatoes and de-pipping olives. Whatever needed to be done I was eager to help.

I learnt to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from the garden and this ignited my passion for food and taught me the value of simple,

wholesome cooking, and - most importantly - to always cook from the heart and infuse it with love and intent.

You don’t have to be a chef or make a perfect meal everytime.

Find what brings you joy and inspiration in cooking, preparing, sharing, shopping - and eating.

Open your eyes and heart and capture what inspires you - do more of that and watch how it transforms your cooking.

I believe that by tuning into ourselves and taking care of our wellbeing, we become the best judges of what is right for us.

We all have the gift to create heartinspired and delicious food that nourishes and delights.

So, embrace your creativity, trust your instincts, and let the joy of cooking guide you. With every meal, you have the opportunity to infuse a little bit of heart and magic into your life.

vibrancy,

Here are some things that inspire me:

INGREDIENTS

My philosophy is to do your best with what you have in the moment. Where possible I aim for organic, next best is local; then, the best of what is available.

CONNECTIONS

I love connecting with friends, farmers and community, visiting and meeting farmers, chatting with customers and friends about what they are cooking or enjoying. There is nothing better than a recipe shared. If you have seen me at Greensmith Grocers, I’ve probably asked you what you are having for dinner.

NATURE

There’s something special about cooking in nature and some of my favourite meals have been cooked in one pot on a campfire and shared under the stars.

SPICE OF LIFE

Herbs and spices add flavour and bring health-boosting properties as well as colour and texture. I have an extensive spice cabinet in my pantry and just the look of it inspires me.

HAPPY TRAVELS

Travelling and meeting people provide my biggest inspirations and a lot of recipes I recreate are from these memories and experiences. I love arriving somewhere new and discovering

where to get groceries and what the local foods are. I like to feel like a local, exploring the markets and discovering who’s making the best bread or selling the freshest fish. My memories of places are linked to the flavours I experienced.

ANYTHING HANDMADE

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of an imperfectly-perfect handmade bowl or mug; the texture of old wooden spoons, special knives and pieces I have collected from my mum; tea towels and aprons, fresh herbs in jars, bowls of fresh produce, flowers from the garden. Find what inspires you and fill your heart and your stomach with goodness.

Rum Day A RAGING

SUCCESS

The spirit shone bright for Nil Desperandum’s Rum Fire 2024 - the hottest event to celebrate Queensland Rum Day as Deb Caruso discovered

On 2 November 2024, rum producers across the state staged a series of events to celebrate the much loved spirit of Queensland, with the team behind Nil Desperandum Rum and Sunshine & Sons Premium Spirits undoubtedly hosting the ‘hottest’ celebration!

For the second year running, the Woombye distillery that is home to the global award-winning Nil Desperandum lit up the skyline for Rum Fire - a sunset bonfire with live music, kids entertainment and food trucks.

Always up for a collaboration and in support of the industry, the Nil Desperandum crew invited three other guest distilleries to join in the fun to showcase their own artisan rums.

The day also marked the release of the 2024 Limited Edition blend, The Rum Consortium, a historic collaboration between Queensland’s Beenleigh Rum, Bundaberg Rum, Kalki Moon Distilling and Nil Desperandum Rums!

The spirits were higher than the flames which burned bright in appreciation of the incredible producers using Queensland sugar cane to create liquid gold.

Cheers to that - see you next year to raise a glass and toast to local success.

On Show STYLE

The upcoming fashion designers of the future shone at this student runway showcase, which stitched together creativity, talent and innovation, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer.

As the lights dimmed and the music started, audience members sat in excited anticipation to be wowed by the fashion designers of the future at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba Campus’ Summer Creative Showcase

The event celebrated the work of the 2024 graduating Visual Arts and Fashion students with a gallery of paintings, drawings and sculptures, live music, interactive installations and activities, food trucks, and a fashion show that brought students’ sensationally diverse designs to life on the catwalk.

Guided by their teachers, six collections were showcased by the graduating Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Merchandising students, which were the culmination of two years of study, passion and hard work.

The catwalk presentation began with former student, now designer and Slow Fashion advocate, House of Clare, before the 2024 graduating students presented

their collections.

Aurora by Oliva Gregg moved beyond the confines of traditional bridalwear, blending minimalist design with a romantic, ethereal energy; while Grace Sherwood’s Avalon evening wear collection featured luxe materials, fine beaded details and fabric manipulation techniques. Inspired by strong women in history such as Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette, it was awarded the Attention to Detail Award for its intricate features.

“I believe fashion is art, and art is supposed to make you feel something,” Grace said. “Fashion is all about referencing the past and different aspects of the art world, so I wanted to reference the way I was feeling about these stories and these women. I wanted to present them in a really beautiful, feminine, powerful way.”

scenery and warm sunset colours, which won the Advanced Diploma Achievement Award and the Fran Kingston Bursary

Olivia Taylor’s Phantasmagoria women’s eveningwear collection drew inspiration from both romantic and 90s gothic aesthetics; while Paris Thomson’s In The Spider’s Web conceptual collection explored the human psyche and the significant effects that grief, trauma and loss can have on us.

Challenging traditional gender norms, Pearl Derksen’s unisex Urban Damsel collection took inspiration from piratelike garments and modern streetwear, resulting in a truly unique aesthetic.

The skills of TAFE Queensland students weren’t restricted to fashion, with beauty students providing makeup for the models, and photography students capturing the action.

Bravo, fashion designers of the future! We can’t wait to see where your talent takes you.

Visit the TAFE Queensland website to find out how to turn your passion for the arts into a career you love.

Thalassa Spa was the toast of the town when it opened its doors to wellness, Deb Caruso discovers the wellness journey that awaits.

Wellness OPEN THE

DOOR TO

Since Thalassa Spa opened its doors in Mantra Sirocco Mooloolaba in September 2024, it has cemented itself as a haven for wellness.

From flotation tanks to performance facials; thermal crystal mats to massage, sauna to sound therapy and light therapy, Thalassa’s treatments have been designed by owner Lisa Tristram to provide relaxation, peace and restoration.

“Nurturing yourself and your health should be more than a luxury, it should be a regular ritual, particularly in today’s fast-paced world,” she says.

“It’s important to take quality time for your body and mind to regenerate and recoup your physical and mental state.”

Lisa’s own journey to sustainable wellness and her experience with pain management as well as managing day spas and working with cosmeceutical companies allowed her to design Thalassa Spa with a thorough and holistic approach.

She says that healing is a process and the regularity of wellness rituals and treatments help to deactivate the fight-or-flight mode to allow the body to repair, restore and reduce inflammation and pain.

“Regular treatments help to balance the nervous system, and can improve gut health and hormonal wellbeing,” Lisa says.

“Take time invest in yourself so that you can be the happiest and healthiest human you can.”

Sounds like good advice to me!

ESTATE Exchange

With regular workshops, gatherings and wellness events creating a serious buzz, Alsahwa Estate is staking its claim as the Sunshine Coast hub for all things MIND, BODY and PLANET, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer

There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by like-minded people, and the Alsahwa team is passionate about bringing people together for the shared purpose of learning and connecting.

Run by a passionate team with endless ideas and enthusiasm, and guided by their brand philosophy of MIND, BODY and PLANET, the team at Alsahwa Estate is driven to share and educate people about the small changes we can all make to make this world a better place.

Since launching in 2024, the community events they’ve been running have connected those interested in biodynamic farming, sustainable living, wildlife conservation and holistic wellness through a series of workshops, events and immersive experiences.

From beekeeping and meditation to yoga and biodynamic farming; an eco day out for kids, and fire cooking classes, there’s something for everyone at this thoughtful haven.

Highlights from this year included the launch of their Wellness in Nature series, where they teamed up with high-profile yoga and pilates instructors, sound-bath specialists and more to offer attendees a serene dose of self-care and reflection in nature. The series wrapped up 2024 with an Introduction to Meditation workshop with Laura Poole, where guests discovered the secrets of rewilding their mind – a skill we could all use in 2025!

Alsahwa Estate’s latest series is the Estate Exchange – In Conversation With... lunches, where attendees are invited to

come along and share a meal with a high-profile person, finding inspiration in their story, the thoughtful food, the deep connections made at the table and the beautiful surrounds.

The first Estate Exchange featured biodynamic farming legend and Alsahwa Estate Ambassador Charlie Arnott.

Kicking off with a welcome cocktail from local distillery Sunshine & Sons, guests were tempted and teased with the sensational visuals and aromas of an outdoors feast cooked over hot coals using locally-sourced ingredients by Terra Firma Dining.

The aromatic smoked barramundi, six-hour fire-cooked lamb leg, and whole smoked chicken with roasted pumpkin with feta, rocket, burnt honey and balsamic were definite highlights, not to mention the crispy smashed potatoes!

As we gathered at tables decorated with beautiful blooms, MC John Caruso – chatted to Charlie Arnott about how biodynamic farming revolutionised his

life (and his health), and how we can all incorporate elements of this philosophy into our own lives. Renowned chef and founder of Terra Firma Dining, Charly Pretet, also shared his journey that has taken him around the world from his hometown of Paris to Noosa.

Disappointed that you missed it and passionate about good food and good people? Estate Exchange will return in 2025 alongside a new delicious long lunch series called FEAST – a celebration of local flavours by local chefs featuring stunning tables set with wildflowers and dishes crafted from nearby farms.

Don’t forget that the Alsahwa Estate online store features a curated collection of thoughtful gifts, treasures and tools to help you on your sustainability journey, and as if that wasn’t enough, the Alsahwa Estate team has a HUGE surprise announcement coming in 2025 that’s guaranteed to cement their status as one of the most exciting spaces on the Sunshine Coast. Here’s to an actionpacked 2025!

Arty

ASSETS

Melanie Rosettenstein discovers the relevance and importance of the Sunshine Coast Art Collection, explores the latest acquisitions and the pieces to look out for.

Art has the power to reflect and unite a community, a town, a city, a country. Creating opportunities for expression and conversation, it shines a spotlight on the world around us - framing, questioning, challenging, and often celebrating moments in time.

The Sunshine Coast Art Collection is a specially-curated investment into art on behalf of the community - a special and unique asset for us all to enjoy.

Caloundra Regional Gallery’s Latest & Greatest III exhibition will be on display from 7 February to 6 April 2025 and will showcase a selection of artworks that have been added to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection over a two-year period, including 250 new pieces as well as the winners of the 2023 Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP) and 2024 Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (SCNAP).

Sunshine Coast Senior Curator (Collections) Nina Shadforth said the collection was a community-owned asset, managed by council for the community.

“The Sunshine Coast Art Collection was created to help capture and celebrate the region’s stories, be it our beautiful environment or highlighting the diverse communities that make up the whole of the region,” she said. “The aim is to enhance the region’s cultural experience, adding to a sense of place and identity, giving people something to connect with.

“Works in the collection can be seen in the community; in public spaces such as libraries and City Hall and in exhibitions such as the upcoming Latest & Greatest III.

“We are excited to highlight the Collection’s significance, showcase some of the latest works and new pieces to watch out for as they make their way into the community.”

Nina says the Art Collection comes to life with public interation.

“Whether it’s a moment shared on social media with a piece of public art such as Lyndon Davis’s Dura Gunga at City Hall, Maroochydore, or engaging with a piece in our daily lives, it is there to be enjoyed and engaged with,” she said.

Latest & Greatest III will feature a few ‘firsts’, such as bronze sculptures, digital and time-based artworks, including winning works from the Local Contemporary Art Prize and recent public art commissions.

Nina says to watch out for the 2023 SCAP and 2024 SCNAP winners, particularly the 2023 winning artwork, Jenni, in spirit form watches the first UFOs appear above the West MacDonnell Ranges

“This Lumachrome glass print was created through an inventive photogram process, which involved placing a deceased animal on chemically reactive paper and exposing it to sunlight for 47 hours in a geodesic dome, resulting in a unique composition,” Nina shares.

Sydney artist, Todd Fuller, won the 2024 prize with his digital time-based artwork, No Use Crying Over Ripped Lace, marking the first video piece in both the prize and collection. This two-minute, 43-second video uses stop-motion animation built from watercolour and charcoal sketches, showcasing Fuller’s technical skill in both digital and traditional media. Narration from one of the subjects in the work highlights prejudice against LGBTQI communities, creating a powerful conversation piece.

Nina says the exhibition would also feature works from one recent single significant donation by a local collector comprising 79 individual artworks by two prominent Australian artists, David Rankin and Sidney Nolan.

“The breadth of the works in the collection aim to build upon our region’s creative and cultural ecology,” she said.

When asked about favourite pieces in the collection Nina exclaims, “That’s a hard one!

“I have many and I guess that I get to share my ‘favouriteness’ across the collection periodically,” she says.

“I don’t think I can name a single work to be my all-time favourite,” she

says. “However my favourite thing is simply being surrounded by artworks, I feel very privileged that this is my job.”

Gallery director Jo Duke says, “All are fabulous obviously, but the David Rankin donation is a standout.

“His works, influential in Australian abstract art, have shaped generations and now enrich the Sunshine Coast collection, thanks to the incredible foresight of a local collector,” she said.

Since 2017 when an audit led to the adoption and endorsement of an Art & Heritage Collections Policy, the Sunshine Coast Art Collection has evolved with a clear direction and focus.

Commissioned by Sunshine Coast Council, 2023

Nina says her work has built on this foundation, aiming to address gaps and broaden the scope by prioritising acquisitions in areas like First Nations artwork, new media and 3D pieces.

The result is a well-rounded collection that reflects both heritage and contemporary artistic expression.

As with all exhibitions at Caloundra Regional Gallery, visitors can expect a suite of activities and events where they can connect with the artworks.

As for the future, Nina says the aim is to ultimately curate and present more exhibitions showing artworks from the collection.

Celebrating arty connections now and into the future!

Nature and Culture –animal as object

Exhibition open: Friday 13 December 2024 –Sunday 2 February 2025

Based on years of observation and research within the bird and mammal collections at the Queensland Museum, this exhibition explores the objectification of animals in nature through taxidermy and in culture through the souvenir. We create facsimiles and profit from these copies despite the risk of losing the originals. What is our uneasy relationship with animal objects, particularly taxidermy and the mass-produced souvenir? Considering that taxidermy harks back to a colonial framework of control and capture, how do we view it now with a redemptive lens?

Through mashups of early scientific taxonomy charts and illustrations, museum taxidermy, pop culture, and the mass-produced souvenir, this exhibition is presented as a contemporary Wunderkammer (a cabinet of curiosity). It asks questions about artifice, collection, consumerism, mimicry, wonder, and beauty.

Giving GIFT OF

A moving speech by Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation Chair and Emeritus Professor Jennifer Radbourne on philanthropy and collecting art caught the attention of local art lover Deb Caruso With permission, we share an extract for your consideration.

“As the inaugural Chair of the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation (SCAF), it was my task and privilege to develop a mission and vision for SCAF. A regional foundation is not closely linked to a company or venue or gallery, where the sense of belonging and cause are easily identified.

“It has to communicate to a diverse group of people across quite diverse places in this region: the coast, the Hinterland, the galleries, artists, arts studios, performing arts venues, families, visitors, bureaucrats, developers, business people and many others. And it needs to inspire them with a vision that no one will challenge and all will want to follow and help realise.

“We chose ‘prosperity’ as a theme for the region – the arts delivering prosperity, and a region transformed by philanthropic investment.

“The true definition of philanthropy

An art collection represents our identity, a time, an artist, a prize winner, a donor, and all the visitors who see and experience the work...

relates to the love of mankind and practical benevolence, but the essence of philanthropy is in the intrinsic values held by donors, benefactors and philanthropic leaders.

“These values are the same values that the arts bring to society and make for a better community in which to live.

“When the philanthropic value is to acquire a work of art for a collection for a regional gallery, it may be quite different from the personal values held by an art collector, which are investment, personal passion for the work or artist, enhancement of the place where the work will be displayed, tax deductibility and possibly altruism.

“The donor of a work for a gallery collection will have additional values such as understanding the role of a gallery in a region, care or love for the region and the gallery, the experience of giving, and an appreciation of the dollar value of a collection as a regional asset.

“In fact, there is a great similarity between a philanthropist and an art collector.

“Their motivations are the same: both

want to support the arts and understand the value art has within society; both want to connect with artists; both experience the joy of living with their passion; both are thrilled by the discovery of new work; both want to pass on a legacy and understand the value of collecting works that increase in value over time, and appreciate that their purchase builds on an existing collection.

“Underlying this, is strengthening the relationship with the institution and the people in it.

“So, the practice of philanthropy is multi-layered. It begins with the idea and deepens through observation, discussion, relationships, and the reflection of values.

“It then becomes concrete in terms of action or donation of the gift. When that gift is a work of art, the experience, the memory or work stays with the recipient or the viewer for a very long time.

“The art of philanthropy can be everlasting. An art collection represents our identity, a time, an artist, a prize winner, a donor, and all the visitors who see and experience the work and embed it in their minds and hearts.”

Professor Radbourne is right and we appreciate the passionate support from her and other leaders in our community.

We are fortunate to have so many amazing artists in this region. From free exhibitions in one of the many art galleries to opportunities to visit local artists in their studios or engage with their work at events such as Open Studios Sunshine Coast or Sculpture on the Edge, it is a pleasure and a privilege.

Why not connect with local art today? Your life will be richer for it.

FABULOUS

FURNISHINGS

It’s rare that anything is sewn by hand in Australia these days – but in one busy workshop on the Sunshine Coast, the machines are humming as the team keeps the art of handcrafting window coverings and soft furnishings alive, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer

When Melanie Moore was trained in the art of hand-sewing curtains, blinds and soft furnishings in England at the tender age of 15 she never imagined that she’d be helping keep the craft alive on the other side of the world 35 years later.

As Owner and Creative Director at Peregian Curtains and Blinds, Melanie brings unique expertise to all things curtains, blinds and soft furnishingstraining and leading a highly skilled team of machinists, upholsterers and fitters in their very own workshop where everything is made using traditional methods by people rather than automated machines.

At risk of losing this dying art, Melanie is advocating for the Queensland Government to reinstate the Cert III in Soft Furnishings Skills so this craft can continue to be taught and recognised.

“So much of creating stylish and effective window furnishings comes down to the choice of fabric, and I’m extremely discerning when it comes to the brands we stock in order to ensure lasting quality,” Melanie said. “We’ve got everything from premium European fabrics to more budget-friendly options, and even these are carefully selected as we want to provide affordability without compromising on style or quality.”

Peregian Curtains and Blinds’ stunning showroom in Coolum Beach is a testament to Melanie’s incredible design eye. It is a place where customers can view samples and selections from sheer curtains, linens, block-out curtains, plantation shutters, Roman blinds, upholstery and more.

The showroom has an impressive

choice of fabric collections from leading companies around the world in a range of materials and budgets to suit all needs.

Melanie has completed fitouts for many of the local cafés, bars and hotels that we know and love. She helps them to select durable materials that will complement the design and the environment, and can work with interior designers and architects to plan and create custom-made furnishings that elevate the surroundings.

residential builds to estimate window furnishings so people can factor this into their budget.

“I think the true foundation of our successful business lies in our incredible teamwork. We currently have a team of seven who work together so well, they are all supportive of each other and put so much care into their craft,” she says.

The business is a true family affair with Melanie’s husband Steve often helping out alongside their daughter Cerys and their other three daughters who also work in the business. The youngest, Tegan, is learning the craft; Jordan runs the social media and website; while Ashleigh, specialises in CAD drawings with an eye for design.

“We work really well together, and often involve Ashleigh on projects that

require her expertise, particularly for bigger jobs,” Melanie explained.

Community is an important part of the brand’s philosophy, and anything they can’t make in their workshop will be sourced from local suppliers, connecting people in the local industry and helping other family-run businesses to thrive.

Peregian Curtains and Blinds values sustainability with no single-use plastic being used in the business.

“With many companies wrapping their fabric and finished curtains in plastic, we avoid this unnecessary waste by transporting our products in huge fabric bags that we reuse again and again,” Melanie said.

Melanie’s favourite part of her work is the consultations with her clients, where she visits them on-site to help bring their vision to life - or even help them discover what that vision might be.

“Sometimes clients come in with a clear idea, sometimes with a collection of images, and other times with no direction at all,” Melanie says.

“In those moments, I guide them, and we work together to choose the best design and products, personalised for their unique space.

“I love advising on the aesthetic elements, but I also focus on asking the right questions to ensure that their window furnishings are practical for the home’s orientation, climate, and lifestyle.

“Some environments will be exposed to intense western sun or may have more natural filtered light, and I will always advise on the best solutions. Whether it’s blockout blinds or products with UV resistance, we aim to balance heat and light while prioritising sustainability and energy efficiency.”

Curtains, blinds and shutters have the power to completely transform the look and feel of a room. Window furnishings evoke emotion, turning a house into a cosy home; they change the look, the perceived size, the way the light filters through a space and the overall energy of a room.

Melanie loves nothing more than helping customers create a beautiful, liveable space that sparks joy.

“To see it all come together at the end is what really drives me,” she said. “I love witnessing customers being so happy and overcome with emotion when they see how their new furnishings have completely transformed their space.”

You spend a significant part of your life asleep so it’s important to choose your bed wisely.

Melanie Rosettenstein meets a local craftsman who puts all the right elements into handmaking every bed so you can rest easy knowing you’re making the right choice for your body - and for the planet.

Naturally ZEN

It was a bad cold that prompted Zen Natural Beds owner and former Brisbanite, Dan Walker, to visit his GP for antibiotics. But instead of getting a script, a locum suggested he get tested for allergies. What transpired was a solution to his ongoing health issues and the auspicious purchase of a futon bed.

“I found out that I had all these different allergies and the locum also recommended I sleep on a futon and not a foam mattress,” he said. “So off I went to buy a futon, and it was so life changing that eight months later I bought Zen Natural Beds, which was called Mr Futon at the time.”

Drawing on his natural affinity and love for woodwork, Dan set about crafting beautiful wooden beds and futons for customers across Queensland and Australia.

After 33 years, Dan closed his successful Brisbane store and recently reopened a showroom in Caloundra.

This is good news for Sunny Coasters who are looking for beautifully handcrafted wooden beds and futons that draw on Zen-inspired Japanese influences, can be customised to their tastes and preferences, and are made with passion. His commitment to the selection and crafting of the best-quality materials is evident in every bed he designs and makes.

“When I was six, I went under the house, found some wood and my dad’s tools and made a little table and chair,” he recalls. “It was a bit rickety, but that’s where my love for woodwork

started. Let me tell you, sawdust gets in your veins.

“I’m a perfectionist so furnituremaking really dovetails with that. I like to see things done right.”

Using a variety of woods like Tasmanian oak, American black walnut and even Western Australian Jarrah, the furniture is also treated with all-natural hard wax oils, which come from a local company based in Lake MacDonald.

The beds are built to order and delivered personally by Dan to customers in the Southeast Queensland area.

In addition to his furniture, Dan also handmakes and sells 100% organic natural mattresses with latex sourced from Thailand.

“Latex mattresses are a better choice because they’re naturally antibacterial and dust-free, making them ideal for asthma sufferers,” he said. “Their open-celled structure resists moisture build-up, ensuring a clean, breathable sleep surface – ideal for the hot and humid Sunshine Coast.

“Plus, latex’s density helps it retain its shape and cushioning over time,

Your bedroom is your sanctuary – a place to unwind from the craziness of the world...

providing uniform support for your body, night after night.”

Dan said it is important to make the natural choice when it comes to where you sleep.

“Your bedroom is your sanctuary – a place to unwind from the craziness of the world,” he said. “When you bring in a handmade, solid wood bed, you’re adding a piece of nature with a human story.

“It’s not synthetic fabrics or plastic; it’s natural materials that create a sense of Zen. It all adds to the serenity of the space.”

Underpinned by the philosophies of Zen Buddhism, Dan’s business is aligned with conscious healthy and mindful living. Best of all, because his mattresses are 100% natural, they are biodegradable,

which makes them kinder to the planet.

“With 27 million people in Australia replacing their mattresses every 10 years, that’s 2.7 million mattresses annually,” Dan says. “While some are gifted or reused, the vast majority – over two million – end up in landfill each year.

“It’s a staggering reminder of the environmental impact of the bedding industry and the need for sustainable solutions.”

When he’s not painstakingly crafting wooden beds and futons or stitching together organic mattresses, Dan can be found enjoying his new Sunny Coast lifestyle in his typical Zen style.

“My day starts at 4am with a gym and yoga session and 15 minutes of red-light therapy,” he says. “Then it’s off to

Kings Beach for an hour of unwinding –a swim, lounging, and just soaking it in. By 7am, I’m in the workshop, ready to craft, whether it’s making a mattress or diving into woodwork.

“At the end of the day, I might squeeze in another quick surf if the sun’s out and wrap things up with some admin before the day is done.”

Turning a health challenge into a thriving business where people can make healthier choices about where they spend a significant part of their lives, Dan’s creations are an invitation to embrace a more mindful way of life so you can rest easy knowing you are doing the best thing for your body and the planet.

Here’s to a zenful sleep, naturally!

Palm Lake Resort offers an oasis of elegance and refined living fit for royalty, as Melanie Rosettenstein discovers. If King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla had to purchase a holiday home to escape the English winter, Palm Lake Resort in Pelican Waters would be a natural choice. Offering high-end, spacious luxury homes, exceptional security, natural beauty, state-of-theart facilities, and a strong sense of community, this exclusive over-50s lifestyle resort would ensure they feel right at home - sans the British weather.

Situated alongside the Greg Normandesigned Pelican Waters Golf Course, construction on the resort began in 2021, with the first residents moving in at the end of 2023. Over the past year, these lucky residents have awakened each morning in their immaculate homes to the shimmer of sunlit waters, manicured gardens, pristine landscapes, and abundant bird and animal life - a true paradise for nature lovers.

Reflecting the design aesthetic of the elite international holiday destination Palm Springs in California, the stunning three-bedroom, three-bathroom homesranging from 233 sqm to 497 sqm and priced from $2 million - feature distinctive flat roof lines that contrast beautifully with curved feature walls.

Three-metre-high ceilings and expansive windows equipped with high-end appliances offer an ultra-luxe appeal. Ascend the curved wooden staircase to the sumptuous bedroom wing or take the lift for added convenience - so smart!

The fittings and fixtures are already top-shelf with homeowners also able to choose upgraded packages from kitchen, laundry and cabinetry upgrades to technology packages - even adding a plunge pool on select homesites.

The bedroom wing serves as a veritable sanctuary fit for royalty, complete with an office nook.

Should the family visit, the three generous bedrooms, two with ensuite bathrooms, provide ample space for all.

The expansive main bedroom offers

a peaceful sanctuary with its own lounge, fridge, and optional wet bar upgrade with coffee machine.

In addition to the serenity of lush green fairways and waterways, the jewel in the crown of Palm Lake Resort is undoubtedly the $45 million Springs Country Club.

This opulent facility offers a mix of amenities unparalleled in Australia, playing a key role in the holistic wellbeing of residents by providing access to five stunning hubs where they can foster a sense of belonging and connection with a variety of experiences:

Mirador houses the wellness precinct, featuring the exclusive Milon gymnasium, yoga and reformer Pilates studios, a heated indoor pool and spa, his and hers saunas, steam rooms, Vichy showers and private locker room.

Sonora serves as the resort’s social heartbeat, perfect for dining, drinks, and dancing with amenities such as a rooftop bar and terrace, piano bar, cocktail lounge, and coffee lounge.

El Dorado is the sporting precinct, centred around an undercover championship eight-rink lawn bowls green, alongside tennis and pickleball courts, a four-lane tenpin bowling alley, billiards tables, and more.

Mirage offers a Palm Springs-inspired outdoor pool and expansive pool deck complete with a sunken firepit lounge and poolside cabanas.

And last but certainly not least, Cerante is the arts and leisure precinct of the Country Club, supporting musicians, artists, and even a luxury cinema.

Pets are welcome and outside the Resort’s secure gates, off-leash Golden Beach is just a short drive away. The convenience of the Bruce Highway and nearby Caloundra, with its shops, restaurants, and medical facilities, are all within easy reach.

One of the true luxuries of living at Palm Lake Resort is the knowledge that the friendly on-site team will meticulously maintain the communal areas, including landscaping and facilities, allowing residents to focus on what truly matters - whether that’s taking up a new hobby, spending time with loved ones, making new friends, or simply enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Oh, and did we mention there’s a bin concierge? Now that’s the royal life!

Whether retired or semi-retired, these are the best years of your life. Melanie Rosettenstein caught up with two savvy and spirited Buderim Gardens retirement village residents to find this wonderful chapter can be filled with joy, purpose and friendship!

Friendship BLOOMS HERE

The Beatles famously sang, ‘I get by with a little help from my friends...’ and this is especially true for two lovely residents of Keyton’s Buderim Gardens who’ve become good friends.

Gaye Marchese and Karen Van Eerde haven’t been at Buderim Gardens long yet have settled into the leafy 60-acre retirement village as if they’ve always lived there.

Karen, a lawn bowls enthusiast and residents’ committee member who settled into Buderim Gardens two years ago, initially moved to the Sunshine Coast to live with one of her daughters, but as the steep stairs at the house became challenging, she started to look for other options.

“Also, being a family neighbourhood, it was quite lonely during the week while everyone was at work or school,” Karen said. “So with all my three daughters, we started exploring retirement villages and when we drove into Buderim Gardens, we all felt instantly that it was the right place. It wasn’t long before a perfect little house became available, and I knew it was meant to be.”

Gaye, an avid quilter and semi-retiree who works part-time at Bunnings, recently celebrated her first anniversary at the village. Previously living in Maroochydore, she wanted to downsize with no mortgage, so took a chance and sold her former home.

“I was frantically searching for a new place when an ad about downsizing appeared, and with a bit of luck and guidance, I discovered Buderim Gardens,” she said.

“I immediately drove up, found a perfect fit, and secured my spot. It was the best decision I’ve made.”

Gaye and Karen are neighbours and met on their street with Gaye saying it was a very friendly community where newcomers are welcomed.

“When I moved in, I was invited over by Christine and Ryan who live between us and the rest is history,” she said.

Since meeting a year ago, the duo do a lot together, taking advantage of the many activities and events within the retirement village or venturing further afield to catch a show or some shopping.

“It’s so nice to have somebody to do things with, especially while my family is at work during the week,” Karen says.

Not only is it wonderful to have a bestie to spend time with, it’s also handy to have someone to keep an eye on things when you are away. “Karen will often look after my fur-baby when I go away,” Gaye says gratefully.

Both agree that one of their favourite things about Buderim Gardens is the weekly Wednesday night social at the community centre, which has a bar, lounge, restaurant, media room, library and more and is the village’s heartbeat!

As she’s on the social committee, Gaye regularly arranges events and activities to keep the residents engaged with the community centre and all it offers.

“We bring in food trucks, hold pizza nights and arrange special events for things like Melbourne Cup,” she adds.

Like many of Keyton’s communities, Buderim Gardens features an array of facilities and activities to boost social

connections and wellbeing. The craft room, gym, pool, cinema and communal veggie garden are all popular among residents.

There is also a club for any activity you can think of - connecting residents around a common interest.

A dedicated bus service transports residents to medical appointments, the Sunshine Plaza, the theatre, beach and beyond! Both Gaye and Karen say the best part is never having to find a parking space.

Their advice to new residents is to put themselves out there, try new things and get involved. On how their lives have changed since moving in, both ladies say ‘for the better’!

Gaye exclaims, “I’ve got no debt, lots of friends, I love my home and I live in a great area. I’m always walking around the village and this community and my friends make up for the fact that most of my family still lives in New Zealand!”

Karen agrees saying, “This stage of life can be very difficult if you’re not outgoing but being in a place like this makes it easy to meet new people and is so good for you. I am very lucky!”

Everything at Buderim Gardens is geared towards ensuring residents feel connected and at home, making for a much richer and happier life.

Just another great example of a Keyton community - with seven located across the Sunshine Coast. I think the Fab Four would approve!

Resilience Growth &

Melanie Rosettenstein consults an expert to uncover some of the property trends from 2024 and what to expect in 2025.

Despite interest rates and the cost of living remaining stubbornly high, 2024 saw Australia’s real estate market cement its position as a global leader in house price growth.

Sunshine Coast registered buyer’s agent, Murray McCarthy, unpacks the reasons behind this growth as well as other interesting real estate trends: World-leading house price growth Globally, house price growth has slowed in the past five years but an analysis from property research collective, PAR Group, shows that between 2019 and 2023, Australia’s house prices outperformed comparable markets like the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK by 14.1%.

The research suggests that Australian house prices rose by 45.8% in the four-year period where the global average was 31.7% and Australia was the only country to record positive annual house price growth.

“Australia’s housing market is fundamentally a story of supply and demand,” Murray shares. “With construction at record-low levels and migration at record highs, the imbalance keeps prices buoyant.

“When interest rates eventually ease, this dynamic is unlikely to change, further sustaining upward pressure on the market.”

PAR Group further reports that the ongoing disparity between population growth and housing completions will mean demand continues to rise, particularly in seaside areas as people continue to seek lifestyle locations where remote work is possible.

dominant force, accounting for 34% of transactions although commercial property is becoming a significant player.

With construction at record-low levels and migration at record highs, the imbalance keeps prices buoyant.

The Trump Effect

As we all wait to see what’s happening with the interest rate, Murray believes that cuts seem unlikely until early 2025 and may be pushed out even further following the election of Donald Trump.

“Analysts say Trump’s big spending commitments could keep inflation higher which is bound to have flow-on effects in Australia,” he shares.

Closer to home, it seems potential buyers have given up waiting for the rate drop. According to the APIM Q3 Property Sentiment Report the proportion of buyers taking the ‘wait-and-see’ approach had dropped from 39% at the end of 2023 to now 22%.

It also showed that residential property remains the overwhelmingly

“I foresee that once interest rates drop, buyer activity will ramp up again in the Eastern seaboard states of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland,” he said. “I believe Western Australia and South Australia, which are becoming saturated markets, may start to stabilise.”

First home buyers pick new builds While homebuyers have run out of patience waiting for interest rate drops, first home buyers are turning to newbuild homes.

REA Group’s 2024 Property Seeker Report showed that in the past 12 months, 36% of Queensland buyers were considering buying or had already bought a new home.

This trend is particularly prevalent amongst first home buyers who are drawn by government incentives targeting new builds which give firsthome buyers a financial incentive to purchase.

Regional Queensland remains a growth hotspot

Queensland and Western Australia are leading the pack when it comes to best-performing regional hotspots - a sentiment backed by PropTrack senior

economist Eleanor Creagh who revealed that dwelling values grew by 0.3%.

In the past 12 months regional Queensland’s dwelling values were up by 10.5%!

Here on the Sunshine Coast Murray said, the mid-range housing market remains resilient while the upper end of the market has softened a little.

“Properties priced under $1.2 to $1.3 million are still moving steadily, and anything under $1 million is particularly buoyant in today’s market,” he said.

The good news is that as Australia’s property market continues to show resilience and growth despite global pressures, the high cost of living and high interest rates, there’s never a bad time to buy.

“In summary, Australia’s house price growth is leading the world and property markets throughout Australia continue to show remarkable resilience,” Murray said. “New data is showing buyers are turning toward new build homes, buyers are keen to buy and homebuyers are shifting their searches to emerging locations that offer a more affordable lifestyle.

“For 2025, we can expect to maintain

the mantle of having the highest growth in the world with increased demand and limited stock.”

When you work with someone of Murray’s calibre - armed with strong commercial acumen, extensive experience, and deep knowledge of the Southeast Queensland property market and its growth potential - you gain a trusted partner well-equipped to help you find properties that tick every box.

Trust BUILDING

When our resident podcaster John Caruso sat down with Pat Ryan to record the second instalment of our branded series, he discovered that the journey from dream to reality in home building is an intricate dance of vision, execution and trust.

Pat Ryan is the seasoned founder of Ryan Designer Homes, and for the latest episode of our special podcast series, Everyone Has a Story, we delved into the pivotal contractual stage of the building process, highlighting how open communication and collaboration pave the way for successful outcomes.

“At the point the building contract is signed, we take control of the site,” Pat explains. This is a monumental shift in responsibility. It signals that Ryan Designer Homes not only accepts the logistical challenges of construction but also assumes accountability for the entire process, from workplace safety to the tiniest design details.

The contract itself is a comprehensive document detailing every aspect of the project, plans, specifications and any client-supplied items. “It’s your home,” Pat emphasises. “We deliver what you want. We’ll make suggestions, but at the end of the day, the final decision is yours.”

This philosophy underpins the company’s approach to collaboration. From the outset, they ensure every decision is client-led. It’s not just about building a house; it’s about creating a partnership based on mutual respect and clarity.

To eliminate potential concerns and keep everyone on the same page, Pat’s team schedules fortnightly on-site meetings with clients. “These meetings allow clients to see exactly what’s going on,” he shares. “If they’ve got questions, we’re face-to-face, so it avoids the back-and-forth of emails.”

These meetings aren’t just technical

check-ins, they’re confidence boosters. Walking through a site together and seeing progress first-hand creates a sense of reassurance. “It’s a lot easier to explain something in person,” Pat notes.

This regular interaction helps avoid misunderstandings and builds trust over time. Pat recounts a project where initial uncertainty from a client evolved into complete confidence: “By the time we were getting the roof on, she was so happy with how things were going that when I called about an item we couldn’t get, she said, ‘Whatever you think, Pat. It’ll be fine.’” These moments underscore the importance of trust built through consistent communication.

Even with the most meticulous planning, construction involves variables. From minor adjustments in design to significant changes mid-build, the process demands flexibility. Ryan Designer Homes handles these seamlessly by ensuring clients are informed before decisions are made.

“We do variations in writing, and 99% of the time, clients know the cost before deciding,” Pat explains. Transparent communication ensures that clients remain in control, even when surprises arise.

Such proactive communication prevents missteps and reinforces the partnership ethos.

One of the challenges Pat encounters could be termed “analysis paralysis,” where clients overthink decisions about finishes, colours or fixtures. “It’s the biggest expenditure in their lives, so the fear of making the wrong choice is understandable,” he says.

Helping clients focus on the big picture while addressing their concerns with empathy is a hallmark of Ryan Designer Homes’ philosophy.

A well-structured financial process is another cornerstone of the contractual stage. Progress payments are clearly outlined in the contract, linked to milestones such as the slab pour or roof installation. “For cash customers, we set up a security account to ensure payments align with progress,” Pat explains. This system protects both the builder and the client, ensuring obligations are met without financial hiccups.

Pat often speaks of the building process as a shared journey. “We’re all part of a team delivering something meaningful,” he says. For many clients, this is unfamiliar territory. “We do this every day; they may only do it once in a lifetime. It’s important we remember that.”

At Ryan Designer Homes, the contractual stage is about more than just paperwork. It’s the point where vision meets action, trust solidifies, and dreams take shape. Pat’s unwavering commitment to transparency, empathy, and excellence ensures that each client’s home is built not only with precision but also with care.

John Caruso discovers Toyota’s two latest offerings: a new model for SUV devotees, and a bold new contender that’s built to impress.

Power,

Performance & POSSIBILITIES

Our coastal lifestyle means embracing adventure. Whether it’s a beachside escape with the family to Double Island Point or Rainbow, towing a caravan out west, or hitting off-road trails in the hinterland, locals need vehicles that can keep up.

Enter two Toyota icons: the everpopular Prado and the Australian debut of the Tundra.

Ken Mills Toyota Dealer Principal, Brett Mills, says the Prado has always been the smaller sibling to the larger LandCruiser as it’s versatile, cheaper to run, and incredibly reliable.

“For many, it’s the perfect balance between capability and cost,” he said.

This practicality has earned the Prado a fiercely loyal following.

“If you look at the cost of motoring over 10 years, the Prado has been incredibly cheap to own. The resale value is solid, and its reliability speaks for itself. That’s why people keep coming back,” Brett said.

The new model Prado builds on that legacy and is available with seven or five-seat options, with trims ranging from an entry-level GX to a top-tier Kakadu.

“There’s also a retro-inspired Altitude edition with an FJ Heritage look,” Brett said. “It’s powered by a proven 2.8-litre diesel engine and is exceptional value.”

For him, the GXL grade stands out.

“It’s a sensational package,” he said.

“A seven-seat SUV with a stack of high grade electronic and safety featuresand a price point that makes it excellent value.

“We’re very confident this vehicle will hit the mark with our customers.”

While the Prado’s updates refine an already beloved model, it’s the arrival of the Toyota Tundra that marks an exciting new chapter for Australian motorists.

This isn’t just a car; it’s a statement, a rugged truck that feels at home Down Under.

“The demand for vehicles like this in Australia has been growing steadily for years,” Brett said. “We’re seeing more RAMs, Chevrolets and F-150s on the road. There’s a definite appetite for these larger vehicles, and Toyota wanted to ensure the Tundra was right before bringing it to the Australian market.”

New to our roads, the Tundra debuted in North America in May 1999, where it became a staple in the large truck market. Its introduction here has been years in the making, thanks to a partnership with Walkinshaw Automotive Group in Victoria.

“This is a world first for Toyota,” Brett said. “They’ve never endorsed postproduction modifications and it’s taken six years of collaboration with Walkinshaw to develop the conversion process, one of those being the switch from left-hand drive to right-hand drive, using genuine Toyota and Lexus parts to maintain the vehicle’s quality and feel.”

Brett said Toyota ensured the Tundra was ready for Australian conditions by running an ‘Insider Program’ that saw 300 vehicles tested by real-world

This isn’t just a car; it’s a statement, a rugged truck that feels at home Down Under.

users under rigorous conditions.

“The feedback was invaluable in ensuring the Tundra met the standards that Aussie drivers expect,” he said.

What truly sets the Tundra apart, though, is its hybrid engine.

“The twin-turbo V6 hybrid is a game-changer,” Brett said.

“It delivers incredible torque and power to compete with V8s while offering better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.”

Driving the Tundra is an experience Brett described with enthusiasm.

“When you floor it from a standstill, the electric motor kicks in first, and you’re pushed back into your seat,” he said. “Then the V6 takes over, and you really feel the power. It’s impressive.”

Whether it’s the dependable versatility of the Prado or the bold Tundra, Toyota is offering Sunshine Coast adventurers exciting new options.

Both vehicles promise to uphold Toyota’s reputation for quality while catering to the evolving needs of a market that loves to explore.
