CITY OF LONDON OPENS DOORS TO BRITAIN’S GLOBAL FINTECH COMMUNITY
Welcome to the inaugural Innovate Finance Crucially, they have access to visionaries and people that drive these ideas – the coders, the graduates and entrepreneurs – across Global Summit 2015, an event that will bright the UK and abroad. reflect the vibrancy and creativity we are currently witnessing in the fintech sector. The developments that we’re seeing with We have 44,000 people working in fintech across the UK and thousands of businesses make up this sector, ranging from mobile payments and digital currencies, to alternative finance businesses such as crowdfunding platforms and peer-to-peer lenders. Growth has been remarkable, so much so that the UK fintech sector was valued at £20 billion last year. There are even more people employed in London’s fintech sector than New York and Silicon Valley. In fact, London attracts more investment than the rest of Europe combined. We have seen a major transformation recently. Financial services companies now recognise their next big bright ideas are not simply going to come from their own in-house strategy, but from thriving startups that are pushing the boundaries and thinking more creatively.
mobile payments, digital currencies, alternative finance, crowdfunding platforms and peer-topeer lending have turbocharged the industry to astronomical levels. At the City of London Corporation, we are delighted to be working alongside Innovate Finance, helping to accelerate the growth of the fintech sector and usher in a new era of alternative products and services that both consumers and clients expect. We need this growth to continue to help create more jobs in London and across the UK. We are fully behind the sector in implementing these grand plans. Mark Boleat | Chairman of City of London Policy and Resource Committee

WELCOME TO THE VISIONARY NEW WORLD OF FINTECH Innovate Finance is the voice of a new movement. We believe in the transformative power of technology to radically improve every aspect of banking, finance and commerce. Here at Innovate Finance we represent many expert voices from the financial services sector, including entrepreneurs, technologists, innovators and visionaries, from companies big and small. We believe that everyone deserves greater access, better choice, superior efficiency and guaranteed security when it comes to saving, raising, lending and managing their money. In 2014, over $12 billion was invested in the global fintech sector, reflecting more than 200% year on year growth in funding. In the UK alone, the fintech sector increased to over $450 million – more than any other country in the world. What makes this an optimal environment for the development and commercialisation of new financial business models and disruptive innovation? We are poised with the experience and confidence to give our entrepreneurs centre stage and to test new consumercentric business models that will ultimately renew trust in financial services, and open up banking to a vast number of unbanked and underbanked consumers around the world. CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the inaugural Innovate Finance Global Summit! Since our launch on 6th August, we have come a long way, and we remain excited about the opportunities ahead which I hope you get a sense of today. In order for the fintech sector to be successful, we must become a tightly integrated community – the golden rule of ecosystem economics is that 10% of a big number is better than 100% of nothing. And, as the world gets smaller and ‘flatter’ through alwayson technology and global accessibility, this has never been truer. From the early days which saw the UK play host to the first ATM on the planet, the country has remained the natural home for fintech. 40% of Europe’s financial services industry is in London. Two of the world’s first and largest mobile networks were created in the UK, and with over seven billion mobile connections globally and only two and a half billion bank accounts, it is clear to see the opportunity presented by the collision of finance and technology. Many global standards are arbitrated, debated and created in the UK, and we look forward to being at the centre of more innovation and industrydefining technology in the future. I’d like to thank all of our members and sponsors for their ongoing support. I hope you enjoy what should be a thought-provoking summit. Alastair Lukies CBE | Chairman, Innovate Finance Chief Executive Officer, Monitise plc UK Business Ambassador for Financial Services

INNOVATE FINANCE ANNOUNCEMENTS
LAUNCH OF POLICY AND REGULATION ECOSYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
THE INNOVATE FINANCE 2015 REGIONAL STRATEGY
As the fintech industry body looking to positively impact both the UK and global policy environment, it is critical that Innovate Finance creates a structure to identify issues and formulate recommendations that represent our members’ concerns. Innovate Finance is therefore proud to announce the creation of four Policy Specialist Groups (PSGs), aligned with existing member sectors, and a supporting Strategy Group, which will identify cross sector policy issues. Policy Specialist Groups will focus on the following areas:
In addition to the right policy structures, Innovate Finance will also ensure any progress made in our sector is shared across the UK. We are therefore delighted to have launched the 2015 Regional Strategy in Leeds last week, as part of an initiative to start leveraging regional fintech hubs into the wider national and international ecosystem. Innovate Finance will also build a network of supportive regional bodies, and expand regional membership. Innovate Finance will host further events in Edinburgh and Isle of Man with more dates confirmed across the UK.
- Payments - Data - Digital currencies - Access to finance
In addition to Leeds, Innovate Finance will create other local partnerships to ensure it becomes the key national organisation for advising national jurisdictions and regional bodies on the development of a viable, sustainable and networked fintech ecosystem.
Dan Morgan, Head of Policy and Regulation at Innovate Finance, will reach out to members following today’s event, inviting expressions of interest in the Policy Specialist Groups and outlining focus, governance arrangements and work streams.
Innovate Finance has already made a postive impact on the finance industry. It has attracted 100 members to date, and taken steps to rebalance the financial services sector and promote diversity, resilience and competitiveness. It is also influencing policy, developing thought leadership platforms and attracting great talent. In short, Innovate Finance is creating a clear long-term vision for fintech, a sector very close to Canary Wharf Group’s heart. Sir George Iacobescu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Canary Wharf Group ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The financial services sector is changing and growing rapidly, with innovative new technologies and platforms emerging almost daily. We are keen to harness the increasing capability of the sector to deliver greater choices of finance options for UK businesses, which is why the British Business Bank is pleased to support Innovate Finance. Keith Morgan, CEO British Business Bank 7

Driven by an ambitious entrepreneurial spirit, we are laying new grounds for everyone to participate, aiming to rebalance and enrich the finance industry with innovation from players big and small – all of that with people at the centre. WHERE DID WE COME FROM? The great british fintech movement has emerged from a major financial crisis, that changed everything - risk, regulation, lending, trust, and broader market forces
PAST
Over the past few years, the UK has cultivated the rise of challenger banks, new forms of financial services, technological advancement, greater investment in innovation, and new business creation. Innoavte Finance began with a report and a series of roundtables facilitated by ENTIQ (the Innovation experts at Level39), documenting the challenges banks and fintech founders were facing and the opportunity for the UK to lead in this sector transformation globally On August 6th, Innovate Finance was launched with the generous support of City of London and Canary Wharf Group, 54 members and a founding Board, championed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and a strong independent voice of the UK fintech sector
WHERE ARE WE NOW? Innovate Finance has become a single point of contact for the fintech ecosystem, bringing big banks, technology firms, startups, educators and policy-makers together to define the future of finance
PRESENT
We’ve doubled our membership, promoted UK’s fintech sector around the world and gained the attention of the global press We’ve helped shape government policy to create a favourable business environment We’ve united big corporations and startups with an entrepreneurial spirit to drive the innovations we need to tackle the big issues We’ve launched a talent programme - placing highly silled graduates into membership firms and bringing an Open University course on Fintech to the broader public
WHERE ARE WE GOING? We will continue to grow our membership base and to forge ahead with new global partnerships that can help promote the UK’s leading position in the fintech world
FUTURE
We will continue to represent the interests of our members and act as a facilitator of dialogue on the key policy and regulatory issues facing the industry We will expand our influence working closely with the City of London Corporation, our Regional Fintech Hub partners, and UKTI to ensure members are included in international trade missions and business opportunities across UK’s connected eco-system We will continue to shape our programming around the needs of our members and the themes that matter to them: access to finance, talent, scaling and exporting resources We will encourage more investment in fintech and inspire new entrepreneurs to come to the UK and drive our fintech sector forward

ATTRACTING TALENT AND DIVERSITY TO THE FINTECH SECTOR As the UK fintech sector continues to thrive, our talent pool begins to bow under its weight. Last year we saw a huge shortage of skills within the sector, and so far nothing’s changed. While many argue that it’s easier to find talent in Britain than in Silicon Valley, competition is fierce for the limited number of candidates with the right mix of skills.
without diversity flowing from the bottom to the top of each organisation. From startups to global banks and large technology firms, every player in the fintech industry must address the serious diversity problem and take collective action to shape a world with greater equality and prospects.
The success of our fintech sector depends on attracting and retaining diverse talent. If we keep hailing the UK as the epicentre of innovation, it’s vital that we develop a strong support network to deliver our promise of continued economic growth. Achieving our goal requires healthy business decision-making and strategic decisions, designed to support quality talent rich in experience. Talent should also come in all shapes and sizes. We want people from different backgrounds and genders to reform the financial services sector. Positive diversity campaigns are beginning to make an impact and companies are starting to take notice of its importance. However, we still have a long way to go. We need to address this issue so we can get the talent we need to sustain the growth of the UK fintech sector, but also to continue to accelerate our progression in the global marketplace.
HELPING INTERNATIONAL BUSINESSES SUCCEED IN LONDON
Innovate Finance is addressing this very issue through its Talent Partnerships. With the Open University, we are developing the Fintech 101 curriculum, to which our members are contributing content. This 50-hour self study course will be available later this year both for those already in the sector and for those looking to enter it. We are also partnering with Imperial College Business School and University College London to provide the best finance, business, tech and engineering talent via internships to our members and attract fresh talent to the sector. Let’s be aware of our social and historical biases. We need to take every action now, to promote an opportunity to support a future where technology, banking and innovation proclaim diversification. We cannot lead a movement in the UK for innovative technology 37
