Nonwovens made from banana/PP fibers

Natural fibers have lot of advantages over synthetic fibers in terms of specific properties, biodegradability and ease of using wastage generated during fiber production. Recently, textiltechnology.net payed attention to an Indian project of the DKTE Society’s Textile and Engineering Institute, Ichalkaranji/ India, which investigated the feasibility of nonwovens made from banana/polypropene (PP) fibers.

Diversity of 3D printing materials offers opportunities in every sector

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, makes it possible to produce parts on demand. Particularly suitable for easily developing prototypes, delivering small series, but also for manufacturing large numbers with, for example, specific adjustments at model level. 3D printing offers freedom of form, circularity, enables production on demand, limits stock and is suitable for many different sectors.

Rare earth elements from waste

Rare earth elements are hard to get and hard to recycle, but American scientists developped a possible solution. They successfully extracted valuable rare earth elements (REE) from waste at yields high enough to resolve issues for manufacturers while boosting their profits.

MaterialDistrict Utrecht 2022

The material innovation event for R&D and design professionals took place from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 April: MaterialDistrict Utrecht 2022. In the materials exhibition, MaterialDistrict presented the most important trends in material development: circularity, energy transition and well-being. 250 materials were exhibited, all of which fit one or more of the three themes. Young talent was also invited to present their new materials, often with a new vision on old materials and waste, reused in a new way. A selection from the offer.

Smart Circular Bridge

An old material is being rediscovered: flax has been used for thousands of years for clothing, sacks, and robust ship’s ropes. Now the plant fibres are experiencing a renaissance and could become the building material. Combined with a special bio-resin, it can be made into a light and highly stable material with properties comparable to aluminium or steel. A first bridge has now been built; two more will follow.

Mussels’ underwater glue inspires synthetic cement

Sea shells can attach themselves extremely well to all kinds of substrates under water. For years, researchers have attempted to replicate the extraordinary adhesive and its properties in the lab. They focused on a few of the eight proteins that mussels secrete and which are responsible for the adhesive strength. Now, researchers at Northwestern University have created a material that performs even better than the glue they were trying to mimic.

Energy optimized kiln car designs Energy saving is a very urgent issue, due to rising energy prices and the global fight against environmental pollution. But besides energy consumption, other aspects such as durability, strength and a good thermal shock resistance must also be considered by the kiln car designer. The aim is therefore to optimize the firing result while maximizing economic efficiency and protecting the environment. The choice of materials influences the service life, mechanical strength, weight and thermal shock resistance. With the aim of optimizing these properties, Refratechnik Ceramics offers materials that meet these requirements. High dimensional stability, low weight, low kiln car and assembly costs can also be achieved through continuous improvements in kiln car design. Optimal kiln car designs with lightweight, thin-walled units help minimize energy consumption. The lower the share of border blocks and the higher the share of insulating core, the more energy can be saved. By using BURCOLIGHT® quality, this effect can be further enhanced, as energy consumption is reduced due to the lower weight. Kiln cars with solid insulating cores made of concrete, fireclay or bricks are completely outdated. State-of-the-art are supports surrounded by highly microporous fillings such as the CO2-neutral insula-

ting material REFRATHERM® Eco (Fig. 1). The ash of the burned rice husks contains SiO2 (biogenic silica). The microporous structure of the SiO2 is retained during the combustion process. This structure ensures a low bulk density and thus low thermal conductivity. (Fig. 2) An optimized kiln car design, the use of lightweight qualities and the selection of highly efficient insulating materials are the decisive factors in reducing energy consumption. If a brick manufacturer opts for non-optimized solutions in order to reduce plant costs, he must expect higher energy costs for a longer period of time.

Innovative Materials, the international version of the Dutch magazine Innovatieve Materialen, is now available in English. Innovative Materials is an interactive, digital magazine about new and/or innovatively applied materials. Innovative Materials provides information on material innovations, or innovative use of materials. The idea is that the ever increasing demands lead to a constant search for better and safer products as well as material and energy savings. Enabling these innovations is crucial, not only to be competitive but also to meet the challenges of enhancing and protecting the environment, like durability, C2C and carbon footprint. By opting for smart, sustainable and innovative materials constructors, engineers and designers obtain more opportunities to distinguish themselves. As a platform Innovative Materials wants to help to achieve this by connecting supply and demand. Innovative Materials is distributed among its own subscribers/network, but also through the networks of the partners. This includes organisations like M2i, MaterialDesign, 4TU (a cooperation between the four Technical Universities in the Netherlands), the Bond voor Materialenkennis (material sciences), SIM Flanders, FLAM3D, RVO and Material District.
