FORWARD TOGETHER As we move Forward Together through today's complex medical landscape, your leadership as one of our Inova Visionaries is indispensable. Your gifts power critical programs that benefit so many populations in our community and keep Inova Health System among our nation's leading and most recognized medical providers. Thank you for your faithful support!

A Major Gift — and New Name — for Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital In recognition of a transformational gift from Falls Church pediatrician Laurence J. Murphy, MD, Inova Children’s Hospital was recently renamed in his honor. We are humbled by his generosity, and proud to introduce Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital. Dr. Murphy has served the children and families of Northern Virginia for more than four decades. Now the Murphy family’s generous support will continue his legacy and enable Inova to provide pediatric patients with the highest quality specialized care. This gift will also help us recruit and retain talent, increase our research capabilities, and expand our award-winning child life program. “Inova has been part of our family for more than 45 years,” Dr. Murphy said. “I’ve spent many days and nights caring for my patients at Inova. My children were born at Inova Fairfax Hospital, and my wife and I have received superb healthcare there over the years.”

Dr. Murphy and his wife, Candace, wished to leave a legacy for their three daughters and the community that Dr. Murphy served his entire career. Dr. Steven Narang, President of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and Inova Pediatric Service Line, views the gift as an enormous vote of confidence.

In recognition of a generous gift from pediatrician and benefactor Dr. Laurence J. Murphy, a pediatrician who practiced in Northern Virginia for more than four decades, Inova Children's Hospital was renamed Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital.

“One of our own pediatricians who has spent his life here is recognizing us and giving back to us …” Narang said. “It’s hard not to get emotional about it. I think this really is something that will elevate, differentiate and multiply what we’ve already built.” “I’m proud to be on the staff and able to practice in a place like this,” Dr. Murphy said. “We have these fantastic facilities, subspecialists, nursing staff, technical staff, and child life specialists. It’s that whole tidal wave of people trying to get that kid better.” On behalf of every child we have cared for at this remarkable hospital, we thank the Murphy family for their extraordinary impact on our community. Another Strong Showing for Inova in Best Hospital Rankings Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital once again received a prestigious ranking from U.S. News and World Report: #40 in the country for Neonatology. Inova’s Neonatology specialty also ranked #3 in the Commonwealth of Virginia and #13 in the Mid-Atlantic region. “When choosing a hospital for a sick child, many parents want specialized expertise, convenience and caring medical professionals,” said Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis and Managing Editor at U.S. News. “The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings have always highlighted hospitals that excel in specialized care. As the pandemic continues to affect travel, finding high-quality care close to home has never been more important.”

Only three percent of U.S. hospitals receive this prestigious status, which requires a rigorous review process and compliance with demanding capabilities and standards for advanced imaging, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, staff with higher levels of education and rehabilitation services for complex stroke patients. Inova Fairfax Hospital has a dedicated 18-bed neuroscience intensive care unit, personnel trained in vascular neurology, neurosurgery and endovascular procedures, advanced technologies and 24/7 neurosurgery capability — including availability of personnel, imaging, operating rooms and facilities. Hospitals receiving this designation are recognized as industry leaders and help set the national standard in highly specialized stroke care. Inova is proud to be pioneering innovation in this specialty and knowing its patients are in the best possible hands.

Exceptional Nursing at Inova Loudoun and Virts Miller Trauma Center

Inova Fairfax Earns Prestigious Certification as Comprehensive Stroke Center The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association has certified Inova Fairfax Hospital a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The elite designation recognizes highly specialized stroke care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical importance of quality nursing — an area where Inova continues to excel and garner national attention. Inova received the Emergency Nurses Association’s (ENA) 2021 Lantern Award — an honor that recognizes exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center and Inova Loudoun Hospital Cornwall Wheeler Family Emergency Department — Leesburg were selected as recipients. “Only three emergency departments in Virginia received this honor, and two of those are at Inova,” said Susan Carroll, FACHE, MBA, MHA, President, Western Region, Inova Health System.” For more information on this year’s Lantern Awards, visit the Emergency Nurses Association website: www.ena.org.

Strengthening and Supporting Inova’s Healthcare Heroes The COVID-19 pandemic is shining a spotlight on our nation’s healthcare workers. From the earliest days of the pandemic, Inova has focused on keeping team members safe and providing resources to improve their wellbeing and resilience. • Inova’s Team Member Compassion Fund offers emergency cash assistance to team members experiencing unexpected financial challenges. Over the last two years, the fund has distributed nearly $500,000 to help with expenses including funerals, non-reimbursable medical costs, natural disasters, transitional housing and emergency travel. • With generous philanthropic support from our community, Inova has launched new evidence-based wellbeing and resilience initiatives including the CARE (Compassion, Action, Resilience and Empathy) Peer Support Network, which trains and deploys peer supporters and connects team members with a network of professional counselors. • Throughout Inova’s five hospitals and outpatient clinics across the region, Compassion Carts and Baskets are making rounds, filled with care items and notes from the community intended to inspire a “pause and thank you” for the team. Adding Behavioral Health Beds at Inova Mount Vernon Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northern Virginia region has seen an increase in residents seeking behavioral health services. Behavioral health inpatient admissions at Inova are up five percent, and Inova Emergency Departments are now treating upwards of 1,200 behavioral health patients each month. In response, Inova Health System was recently approved to add 20 inpatient behavioral health beds at Mount Vernon Hospital, increasing overall capacity 67 percent over current capacity. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2022. “Increasing our inpatient behavioral health capacity meets a critical need in both Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova. “As Virginia seeks to address an ongoing crisis in serving those with behavioral health needs, Inova has stepped up by caring for more patients, hiring more clinicians, and with today’s action, adding more capacity.”

Many Hands Honor the Legacy of Young Lives Lost to Cancer Wordfall, by Francie Hester and Lisa Hill, is a collaborative work of art honoring the life and legacy of young writer Brendan Ogg and Mathais Giordano, a beloved member of the Inova community.

To help create this installation last summer, volunteers from long-time Inova supporters Team Mathias and Northern Virginia Orthodontics, hand-wrapped and linked more than 80,000 paperclips with multicolored abstracted words from Brendan’s poetry and the number 12 on orange paper, representing Mathias’s soccer jersey. Wordfall is located at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute flagship facility, a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital. It is the latest addition to an expansive collection of artworks that provide comfort, healing and hope to the thousands of patients and families who visit Inova Schar each year. Inova Schar’s Art Selection Committee — which includes team members, supporters, patients and caregivers — carefully reviews new works to ensure each contributes to patients’ wellbeing. The Arts and Healing Program at Inova Schar is expanding across Inova, bringing Artistsin-Residence to Fair Oaks and Alexandria, and in 2022, will begin programming at the new Inova Schar-Loudoun. Arts and Healing is 100% funded by philanthropy, and we are grateful for the cornerstone support provided by Robert G. Hisaoka, Dr. Gary Mather and Christina Co-Mather, and Sandy and Jerry Croan.

Improving Behavioral Health in Adolescents Through Measurement-Based Care Mental health challenges among children, adolescents and teens increased dramatically over the last two years, as isolation from peers, the burdens of distance learning, and loss of community activities greatly limited options for healthy connections and support. In 2020, Inova Kella had just under 40,000 therapeutic encounters with children and families — this represents a sharp increase over previous years. Measurement-based care is the gold standard of behavioral health interventions and the foundation of care provided at Kellar. Inova Health Foundation welcomed research partner Dr. Christianne Esposito-Smythers, along with a panel of Inova behavioral health experts including Dr. Linda Lang, Dr. Rick Leichtweis, and Shruti Tewari, MD and moderated by Dr. Sage Bolte, to discuss the importance of measurement-based care in the prevention of adolescent suicide. “Measurement-based care provides objective scales and progress tracking that providers and families can use to better understand what’s working well and what’s not,” says Dr. Esposito-Smythers. “And by aggregating patient data, we can modify individual treatment plans and programs as a whole, to be even more effective.” To learn more about Inova Kellar Center and measurementbased care, please visit foundation.inova.org/inovavisionaries to watch the full webinar, Inova Institute Part 3: On the Rise: Adolescent Suicide as a Public Health Threat.

2021 By the Numbers: Despite last year’s challenges, our dedicated medical staff worked through long and extended shifts, newly enacted safety protocols and uncertainty to ensure that our patients still received the care they needed. Here are the major milestones we reached together: • 84,723 patients admitted to Inova hospitals • 372,079 hospital emergency room cases • 35,708 cancer patients treated • Hundreds of survivors of abuse treated by the Inova Ewing FACT department • 17,409 babies delivered

Diversifying Inova’s Clinical Trial Participants

• 5,257 COVID-19 patients discharged, with many more thousands treated without being admitted

Securing adequate diversity among participants is a recognized challenge in populating randomized clinical trials. Inova is committed to ensuring that trial participants represent the racial and ethnic makeup of our communities.

• We raised over $212,000 to purchase toys as part of Poppy’s Toy Drive

This year, Inova Schar Cancer Institute introduced and implemented a robust new standard for oncology clinical trial recruiting. It focuses on tactics designed to ensure that trial participants represent the population who will use the treatment as part of routine care. These new standards raise awareness of available trials and encourage providers and patient advocates to discuss clinical research with patients. In turn, great communication boosts patient participation from a more diverse population and helps normalize research as a part of a patient's treatment plan.

Thank you for your dedication and leadership as we move Forward Together in 2022.
