New Cutting-Edge Cancer Prevention Center Opens in Fairfax
Virginia residents have an important new resource in the fight against cancer: the Inova Saville Screening and Prevention Center in Fairfax, which opened in May, 2022. The integrated hub is among only a few such resources in the U.S., and the first in our region. It offers full-spectrum cancer services from screening and monitoring through diagnosis and treatment.
Its multi-disciplinary approach includes specialists, surgeons, genetic counselors, dieticians and nurses. It offers patients comprehensive services for effective early detection and management and access to the latest research and preventative interventions.
The Center’s innovative approach was initially conceived by Inova Schar Cancer Institute President John Deeken, MD because more than 40 percent of cancer cases in the United States are attributed to preventable risk factors.
“This new state-of-the-art facility provides greater access to routine cancer screening as well as a comprehensive approach to minimizing cancer risk.”
Rebecca Kaltman, MD Executive Director and Endowed Chair Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center at Inova Health System
Through a care model of lifestyle mentoring and intervention, the Center provides comprehensive screening and prevention services for breast, lung, pancreatic, prostate, thyroid, gastrointestinal, head and neck, melanoma and skin and gynecological cancers. Services are also available for those at average risk who want to learn about ways to modify or change their lifestyle to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
The Inova Saville Center’s exponential expansion and growth this year and in the coming years is fueled by the generous philanthropic support from Visionaries like you. This includes:
• Additional educational programming like nutrition lectures, fitness classes and cancer genetic group classes
• Clinical expansion by hiring new team members to meet demand
• Adding more clinics such as bariatrics, gynecology, nutrition and behavioral health
• Innovative practices like our new Thyroid Nodule Clinic
Diversity at Inova: You Belong Here
In the ever-changing world of healthcare, we must constantly better ourselves in order to provide world-class care to our patients. That’s a mission we carry into every corner of our practice — inpatient care, in accessibility, and in our workplace culture.
At Inova, we are committed to building a culture of inclusion in the workplace that inspires a sense of belonging in every team member. That’s why we are especially proud to be recognized alongside other organizations dedicated to this important work.
In 2022, the Inova Health System was named on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers for Women. Graded by criteria such as working conditions, diversity and likeness to recommend their employer to others, the Forbes list identifies companies working to support women inside and outside their workforces.
We are proud to be listed on the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index, which promotes equitable and inclusive care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer patients and their families.
At Inova, we have the privilege to serve some of our nation’s most diverse communities by leveraging the talents, perspectives and experiences of a beautifully diverse team. We take pride in delivering results and celebrate our team members' contributions to advancing care.
Arts and Healing: Reducing Stress and Restoring Wellbeing
Inova recently expanded our Arts and Healing program to the new Loudoun location of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. This new state-of-the-art, 16,000 square foot cancer treatment facility offers Loudoun-area patients a therapeutic healing environment within the holistic, patient-centered care at Inova Schar.
Designed to minimize suffering and restore wellbeing, the Arts and Healing Program at Inova Schar is fully funded by philanthropy and helps create a beautiful and peaceful environment to promote healing and wellness.
“Healing involves more than just treatment,” says Lisa Ellis, Inova Visionary and founding member of the Executive and Art Selection Committees for Arts and Healing at Inova Schar. “Inova really deeply cares about the whole patient experience, and it gets manifested through every personal touch from the moment you walk in the doors.”
A successful local artist, Lisa is a passionate advocate for Inova’s Arts and Healing program. She has directed a number of healing-related installations at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and supported the art selection at Inova Loudoun Hospital and the new Inova Saville Center.
“The work we are doing is important for our patients and the artists themselves,” says Ellis. “I like to give to an organization where I am engaged with a team who aligns with my passions and respects my desire to make a difference.”
Artists in our Artist-in-Residence program work directly with patients, caregivers, and clinicians, utilizing the power of the arts to create opportunities for stress reduction, self-awareness and self-expression, while providing inspiration, hope and healing in a medical setting.
This program consists of 20 diverse professional artists, including seven visual artists, six musicians, three poets, two knitters, one dancer and one storyteller.
One patient reflected, “I was really feeling sick … but [the artists] helped me to focus on something else and I truly appreciate that attention.”
In 2023, we will be expanding our Artist-inResidence program to serve even more patients and team members. The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery will have four new fine art exhibits rotating quarterly.
And we will be outfitting two expanded Inova Schar infusion clinics at Fairfax and Fair Oaks, plus a new Surgical Oncology Clinic at Fair Oaks.
Northern Virginia’s First-Ever LGBTQ+ Primary Care Clinic
In June 2022, Inova Health System was proud to open Northern Virginia’s first dedicated medical health clinic for the LGBTQ+ community. The Inova Pride Clinic will serve as a primary care clinic with an emphasis on the specific needs of the LGBTQ+ community in a safe, respectful and compassionate environment.
Led by Dr. Jorge Ramallo, who is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and a member of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and the American Academy of HIV Medicine, the Pride Clinic’s team of clinicians will bring their expertise in addressing the unique health needs of this community, such as adolescent health, HIV prevention, STI treatment and prevention, gender affirming care and mental health.
“The sad truth is that many LGBTQ+ patients have encountered some form of discrimination in a healthcare setting in their lifetime, which has made doctor visits stressful and something to be avoided,” said Dr. Ramallo. “By creating a dedicated medical home, we can help encourage members of this community to get the care they need.”
“Inova has long embraced innovative approaches to bridge gaps in healthcare,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Inova Health System. “The Inova Pride Clinic will ensure inclusive and judgment-free care and support long-term health and wellness — without barriers.”
Select Medical and Inova to Establish Northern Virginia’s First Critical Illness Recovery Hospital
In June 2022, Select Medical Corporation and Inova Health System announced a joint venture to establish the first Critical Illness Recovery Hospital in Northern Virginia
A CIRH is a new service for patients who require an extended stay with specialized clinical attention and support, but no longer need the intensive care provided in an acute care hospital. The 32-bed facility, scheduled to open in the first half of 2023, will be located within Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.
“Our new relationship with Select Medical allows Inova to fill a market need and provide this much needed service for Northern Virginia patients and families,”
said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Inova Health System. “I’m thrilled that Inova is continuing to find innovative ways to deliver seamless care for patients.”
“We share in a mission with Inova to provide high quality and safe care that enables patients to heal, recover and return to their community,” said Tom Mullin, Executive Vice President of Specialty Hospitals at Select Medical.
Once complete, all five Inova hospitals will be able to seamlessly transition patients to the CIRH, enhancing Inova’s continuum of care.
Celebrating 20 Years of Support from United Bank
Inova is thankful for the many community partners that make our work possible. One such partner is United Bank, which raised a record $357,000 for the Inova Kellar Center in its 20th annual Charity Classic golf tournament last year.
When added to previous years’ tournaments, this event has generated more than $7 million for Inova Kellar since its inception in 2002.
For more than 30 years, Inova Kellar Center has provided behavioral health services for children, adolescents and their families. Founded in 1991 with a visionary gift from the Kellar Family, the Kellar Center offers a continuum of outpatient services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.
“The demand for Inova Kellar Center’s mental health services for children, adolescents and families is at crisis levels,” said Rick Leichtweis, PhD, Executive Director, Inova Kellar Center. “We are deeply grateful to United Bank, and the many generous United Bank Charity Classic donors, for their longstanding partnership to help us meet the mental health needs of our community.”
“Making a positive impact in the lives of those we serve across our communities is at the core of what we do,” said Mike Proctor, Chief Commercial Banking Officer, United Bank. “Inova Kellar Center’s efforts to provide comprehensive treatment programs and innovative special education for children and their families is life-changing and helps to ensure a brighter future for those who live and work in our community.”
Addressing Top Community Needs at New Inova Cares Clinic
We are in a mental health crisis that touches every one of us in one way or another. Deterred by stigma, lack of providers, or the inability to pay, thousands feel forced to navigate their mental health struggles alone. Last fall, Inova took a step to reach out to those in need of behavioral care with a new care center.
In November 2022, we opened our first Inova Cares Clinic for Behavioral Health, which provides adult mental health counseling services to individuals who are underinsured, uninsured or have Virginia Medicaid coverage and are struggling with symptoms of mild to moderate mental health conditions.
According to Mental Health America’s recent annual State of Mental Health in America report, an estimated 55 percent of the more than 50 million Americans who experienced mental illness in 2020 went untreated. The report also documented that most of those seeking counseling could not access treatment in 2020 because they could not afford it or find an available doctor.
“Stigma is the enemy of mental health and substance use disorders. Inova put themselves right out there when it comes to stigma,” said Dr. Rick Leichtweis, Executive Director, Inova Kellar Center.
“I’m thankful to be part of an organization that responds to the self-identified needs of the community,” said Christopher Chiantella, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Inova Loudoun Hospital. “We are privileged to serve our community, made up of our friends and families, and have an impact on individuals’ health and wellbeing.”
2022 By the Numbers:
Despite the challenges, our dedicated medical staff worked through long and extended shifts, newly enacted safety protocols and uncertainty to ensure that our patients still received the care they needed.
Here are the major milestones we reached together:
88,002 patients admitted to Inova hospitals
435,499 hospital emergency room cases
51,447 cancer patients treated
Hundreds of survivors of abuse treated by the Inova Ewing FACT department
17,669 babies delivered
More than 5,033 COVID-19 patients discharged, with many more thousands treated without being admitted
We raised over $300,000 to purchase toys as part of Poppy’s Toy Drive.
