El equipo de greenkeepers de Arabella Golf Mallorca ha logrado que el campo de Son Muntaner haya estado a la altura de un gran evento como el Mallorca Golf Open.
Cuéntenos por favor cómo afrontaron el reto de dejar listo el campo para el Mallorca Golf Open.
La verdad es que, cuando se decidió que este importante torneo se celebraría aquí en Son Muntaner, por nuestras mentes pasó el fantasma de preguntarnos ‘¿tendremos tiempo suficiente para presentar el campo como se merece?’ Pero junto al gran equipo humano de ingenieros, mecánicos segadores, encargados de búnkeres y jardineros hemos superado este reto con creces.
La hierba ha aguantado muy bien. ¿Qué variedad es?
En los greens tenemos Bentgrass, pero la variedad que predomina es la Bermuda grass. Utilizamos esta variante porque es la que mejor se adapta al clima, soporta el uso de agua reciclada, tiene una gran resistencia a enfermedades y es más resistente a plagas, por lo que minimizamos el consumo de agua y el uso de fertilizantes y fitosanitarios.
¿Cuáles son las claves de tener bien cuidado un campo de golf?
Lo más importante es anticiparse a todos los factores que juegan en contra de tener una planta sana y fuerte. Diariamente, para que el jugador se encuentre el campo en las mejores condiciones realizamos siegas, rastrillado de búnker, limpieza o chuletas. Además de otras tareas que son muy necesarias, como pinchados, escarificados, recebos o aplicar calcio.
¿A qué altura está cortado el césped y cada cuánto hay que cortarlo?
Modificamos las alturas dependiendo de la época del año y del estrés de la hierba. Por norma general, los greens suelen estar entre 2.5 y 3.5 milímetros, el fairway entre 8 y 12 milímetros, los antregreens entre 30 y 45 milímetros y el rough entre 35 y 48 milímetros. Para el Mallorca Golf Open, la altura del rough fue de 85 milímetros.
¿Cuántos años lleva vinculado al mantenimiento de campos de golf?
Empecé a los 14 años como caddie en Sotogrande, y en 1990 me contrataron en Valderrama, donde viví la transformación de un campo normalito en lo que hoy es uno de los mejores campos de Europa. Preparamos 5 Volvo Masters, 2 American Express Championship y la única Ryder Cup celebrada en España. A Arabella llegué en 2002.

Please tell us how you met the challenge of preparing the course for the Mallorca
Golf open. The truth is that when the decision was made to hold this important tournament here at Son Muntaner, the fleeting phantom of a question passed through our minds – “Will we have enough time to present the course as it deserves?” But with the great human team of engineers, mower mechanics, bunker keepers and gardeners, we amply met the challenge.
The grass held up very well. What variety
is it? On the greens we have Bentgrass, but the predominant variety is Bermuda grass. We use this variety because it’s the one that adapts best to the climate, it can stand being watered with recycled water, is very resistant to diseases and even more immune to pests, so we can minimise water consumption and use of fertilizers and pesticides.
What are the keys to keeping a golf
course well-tended? The most important thing is to anticipate all the factors that work against having strong, healthy plants. On a daily basis we mow, rake bunkers, clean or fix divots so that players find the course in the best of conditions. As well as other tasks that are very necessary, like hollow tining, scarification, top dressing or applying calcium.
How tall is the grass, and how often
does it have to be cut? We vary the height depending on the time of year and the stress level of the grass. Generally speaking the greens are usually somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 millimetres, the fairway is between 8 and 12 millimetres, the antegreens are from 30 to 45 millimetres high and the rough is between 35 and 48 millimetres tall. For the Mallorca Golf Open, the rough was 85 millimetres high.
How long have you been in golf course

I started out at the age of 14 as a caddie at Sotogrande, and in 1990 I was hired by Valderrama, where I experienced the transformation of an ordinary course into what is now one of the best courses in Europe. We prepared 5 Volvo Masters, 2 American Express Championships and the only Ryder Cup to be held in Spain. I came to Arabella in 2002.

Nach der Entscheidung, dieses wichtige Turnier hier in Son Muntaner auszutragen, waren wir unsicher, ob ausreichend Zeit bliebe, um den Platz angemessen vorzubereiten. Unsere fantastischen Ingenieure, Mechaniker und Gärtner haben diese Herausforderung im Zusammenspiel mit den Kollegen für die Pflege von Rasen und Bunkern bravourös gemeistert.
Das Gras sieht immer noch sehr gesund aus.
Welche Sorte wächst hier? Auf den Greens haben wir Bentgrass, mehrheitlich jedoch Bermuda-Gras, weil diese die für unser Klima am besten geeignete Sorte ist. Dieses Gras verträgt recyceltes Wasser, ist extrem resistent gegen Krankheiten und sehr widerstandsfähig gegen Schädlinge. So benötigen wir nur ein Minimum an Wasser, Dünger und Pflanzenschutzmitteln.
Was ist das Geheimnis eines gut gepflegten
Golfplatzes? Am wichtigsten ist die Berücksichtigung aller Faktoren, die einer gesunden, kräftigen Pflanze schaden können. Ein für die Spieler optimaler Platz erfordert tägliches Mähen sowie Rechen, Säubern oder Auffüllen der Bunker. Hinzu kommen andere unverzichtbare Arbeiten wie Stechen, Vertikutieren, Nachdüngen oder das Ausbringen von Kalzium.
Auf welche Höhe wird der Rasen geschnitten
und wie oft muss er gemäht werden? Das kommt auf die Jahreszeit und die Belastung an. In der Regel steht das Gras auf den Greens 2,5 bis 3,5 Millimeter hoch, auf den Fairways 8 bis 12 Millimeter, das Gras des Vorgrüns wird auf 30 bis 45 Millimeter geschnitten und das der Roughs hat eine Höhe von 35 bis 48 Millimetern. Die Roughhöhe bei den Mallorca Golf Open lag bei 85 Millimetern.
