SOCKY CHOP DECOY STILL PAYN’ DUES SORRY YOU MISSED US

WELCOME TO THE 2nd ISSUE Hello, and thank you for opening Inprogress magazine 2nd issue. We are Orlando, FL new underground art scene headquarters. The magazine you are now reading is dedicated to the local artists of Florida (Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, and all the cities in between). If you are an artist or creative soul and want to reach out to other artists, clients, or get more exposure then come join us because we are behind you like the paint on your canvas, 100% With a varnish seal to finish. We reject no ones art, but will offer words of wisdom when needed. OK so were back one more time for another release, sorry to keep you waiting. This is my first time putting a publication like this together, never really learn till you do it your self and I still have a lot learning to do. I have a lot of people helping me and supporting us. Well the last two months I have traveled to Tampa and Miami and have met some great new people, new artists and new shops that I want to tell you about. For this issue you will get some insight on the local pioneer to my inspiration behind this publication, Decoy who runs Take down magazine, and our new favorite artists Socky Chop. We have some great photos from Orlando’s own Dolla Lama “Still Payn’ Dues Show” and Redefine

Gallery last final show “Sorry you missed us”. Now don’t worry were not only going to be writing about Orlando’s art scene but I’m still inprogress to collecting more information beyond Orlando.

anything. What I am really trying to say is, I am a designer who loves art. Without art, design would really lack in the aesthetics department.

KRYSTINE LOPEZ I found that most of the deep sea fish we recognize are the female of the species. So I treated them like any modern woman. Look closely and you’ll notice the rouge of their cheeks, the stain on their lips, and the shadow above their (eyelashed) eyes. My focus as an artist is to question, challenge, or change the www.flickr.com/kwaleska

identity of each subject. I made my female subjects feminine through something as completely subjective as modern views of beauty, and I know I was successful. Not a single person has called the series ugly, and all because of these subtle changes to the outward appearance.

REX THOMAS The physical world, our built environment, must now compete for our attention with the virtual environment. QUESTIONS WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

“Hi, I’m Chucky, wanna play?” 1988 Chucky

WHERE DOES THE NAME DECOY COME FROM?

“You start to play it and it’s like somebody’s nightmare. And then this woman comes on, smiling at you, right? Seeing you through the screen. Then when it’s over, your phone rings, someone knows you watched the tape and what they say is, “You will die in seven days.” 2002 - The Ring

WHAT IS YOUR TYPE OF STYLE? “I have such sights to show you!” 1987 - Hellraiser

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON SHOWING ART IN GALLERIES TO SHOWCASE?

“He’s a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But, he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don’t listen. Remember that, do not listen.” 1973 - The Exorcist

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS TO CREATING YOUR WORK? “1 - 2 - Freddy’s coming for you, 3 - 4 - Better lock your door, 5 - 6 - Grab your crucifix, 7 - 8 - Better stay up late, 9 - 10 - Never sleep again...” 1984 - A Nightmare on Elm Street

IF YOU WERE NOT AN ARTIST/DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING RIGHT NOW? “You’re going to need a bigger boat.” 1975 – Jaws

WHAT WORD OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE UP AND COMING ARTISTS? “They’re all going to laugh at you!” 1976 - Carrie

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT TO DATE?

“She lives beyond the grace of God, a wanderer in the Outer Darkness. She

is Vam-Pyre, Nosferatu. These creatures do not die like a bee after the sting. Instead, they grow strong and become immortal once infected by another Nosferatu. It is not one creature we are fighting, but legions, who go on living age after age.” 1992 - Bram Stoker’s Dracula

WHY DO YOU USE HORROR AS YOUR SUBJECT IN YOUR ART? “We all go a little mad sometimes.” 1960 - Psycho

WHAT ARTISTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO PAINT WITH THAT YOU HAVE NOT WORKED WITH YET? “They’re Heee-re.” 1982 - Poltergeist

YOU HAVE BEEN PROMOTING YOUR ART AND TAKEDOWN FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, WHAT GOT YOU INTO CREATING THE PUBLICATION TAKEDOWN MAG? “They’re us. We’re them and they’re us.” 1990 - Night of the Living Dead

TAKEDOWN MAG WAS VERY CREATIVE WITH THE ISSUES IN 3D. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE EACH ISSUE TO NEW LEVELS?

“When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.” 1978 – Dawn of the Dead

YOU’RE A BUSY MAN AND ARE ALWAYS WORKING ON PROJECTS, HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR ART, LIFE AND JOB ALL AT THE SAME TIME? “Oh Yes, there will be blood!” 2005 – Saw II

TELL SOMEONE YOU DON’T KNOW SOMETHING THEY WON’T EXPECT OF YOU?

“I’ve seen enough horror movies to know that any weirdo wearing a mask is never friendly.” 1986 – Friday the 13th Part VI

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

“I don’t want to get you drunk, but, ah, that’s a very fine Chardonnay you’re not drinking.”

2000 – American Psycho

ANNIVERSARY PHOTOAGRAPHY BY: STEVE PARKER

On May 8th, 2009 at Redefine Gallery and Boutique located at 213 N. Magnolia, Redefine celebrated the one year anniversary of being one of Orlando’s coolest art shoppes. Celebrating creatively they re-painted the inside walls of the gallery with murals done by Socky Chop, Decoy, and Neo Soe. “Sorry U Missed Us” was a testament that in an Urban Art market a Gallery like ours could be here one day and gone the next due to selective supporting in a scarce market. We knew that the community wants and needs a spot like Redefine but not sure if Orlando in general and the economy is ready for one. “Sorry U Missed Us” was true to it’s word, if you didn’t make it to one of our best shows ever then unfortunately you missed what Redefine was all about. That was the 1 year Anniversary Party and the official last day open at Redefine. We as a clothing line will continue to build and hope that Bold Hype can survive and will take true Urban Art down the road we tried to start for Orlando, and also hope Reign continues to bring Orlando real Urban Culture through apparel.

Our people need to realize that what we do is a luxury and done to preserve our Culture in an area where our Culture is not even supposed to exist, therefore we should have held the spots like Post Renaissance, Culture Kings, Hip Kat, Sink or Swim, Red Hook Gallery, House Of Tees, Store101, etc on a pedestal. If we as a community want Florida as a whole to have places that support our Culture, Style, Taste, etc then we as a community really need to step up and support local shops and art. If we continue to just be “cool” with our Independent Cultural Suppliers rather than be “Supporters/Customers” then soon enough local to us will just mean Urban Outfitters and Journeys. Words from the owner of REDEFINE GALLERY Peter Van Flores III
