case: centiro In Viared just outside of Borås you will find the global IT company Centiro’s newly established headquarters. With twice as much space as before, it has been possible to create a workplace where employees feel at home.

Since its inception almost 20 years ago, Centiro has become one of the biggest names in cloud-based e-commerce and logistics services. The rapid growth over the recent years has resulted in an expansion that more than doubled the office's surface. And the company is still looking towards a bright future. There are now enough space for 300 employees, even though they are only 180 employees working there today. Both the existing house and the newly built house are designed by Gert Wingårdh. He designed the office in close cooperation with Centiro. – The words used during this design project was young, urban and Scandinavian. We chose to work with a lot of wood to match the oaks and the forest outside, whilst breaking it off with a tougher material like concrete. The interior is a lovely mix of classic design and youthful design, says Madeleine Müller, interior designer at Wingårdhs. Photo André Pihl

The urban interior also reflects a company that, despite international offices around the world, stands firm with their roots in Borås. – Centiro used their inheritage from Borås and selected products from local suppliers, including Horred's work desks, and carpets from Kasthall, says Pernilla Sackemark, sales manager at Input interior. For the new office furnishings, Input interior was responsible for the project from start to finish, and was also in charge of delivering all the interior furnishings.

The striking staircase in the atrium has a Scandinavian feel, with woodwork in pine and Douglas-trees. Its all set in different tones that creates a colourful impression. – We may have chosen harder managed materials that require much love, but the results are amazing, says Lisbeth Hedin, facility manager at Centiro.

A centre full of life

– We have invested a lot in these areas, there are landings where you can eat a fruit and spend time with your colleagues. In the staircase you will find different landing zones with lovely sitting chairs. It’s in these spaces that good exchanges take place; a lot of ideas and laughter! It’s here where its all happening.

In order to create a dynamic environment, Gert Wingårdh placed great emphasis on designing an inner core that joins the two buildings together. The result was an atrium that reflects Centurion's essence and became the heart of the new house. Case: Centiro

Monologue and dialogue The original building offered workplaces in an open office landscape, a concept that was introduced also in the expanded area. All employees have a permanent office desk, and each sector also has access to smaller rooms in the office landscape. – In an open landscape, it’s important to provide space for separate work and individual calls. We have introduced monologrum-rooms, small huts created for making phone calls. The slightly larger dialogue room can accommodate two people, explains Madeleine Müller. A new addition is the brainstorm-zones, which are adjacent to the workplaces, where up to ten people can meet and come up with new ideas. – It's a softer sitting area, with sofas and puffs, where you are allowed to be creative. It’s created to encourage the ideas to flow between the staff, says Lisbeth Hedin. Something to stimulate all minds Centiros new facility also includes a bottom-level lunch restaurant with seating for 200 guests, which is also opens to the public. – The restaurant adds both energy and pulse, and becomes a natural place to enjoy lunch with colleagues or visiting customers. Even though Centiro gladly advocates speed and action, they don’t want the restaurant to be perceived to be too loud or busy. The solution was to decorate with stuffed sofas and wall panels that create a pleasant acoustics, said Madeleine Müller. The dynamic restaurant stands in contrast to the glassed conservatory by the name Winter Garden, which, despite its cool name, becomes a warm meeting place with terracotta-coloured puffs and seat cushions. Once a week the furniture is set aside for morning yoga with all the employees. – We have environments that effects all senses. Your whole body will get an experience when you visit us. You should feel like you want to be here, says Lisbeth Hedin. The effort of putting employees' needs into focus has put Centiro repeatedly on top of the list of Great Places to Work – a proof that the employees really feel comfortable. – The best thing about the new office is the feel of the building. Many of our staff members have stated they don’t feel like they are going to work, it feels more like home, concludes Lisbeth Hedin. n

The large wooden staircase is the heart of Centiro, and joins the two buildings together. A natural centre that offers a place to rest, or a place for social meetings. Case: Centiro

”The words used during this project was young, urban and Scandinavian. We used a lot of wood, to match the forest outside” – Madeleine Müller, Wingårdhs.

The new office is called the Mothership and as a little tribute to the classic space movies, Star Wars have been integrated in the interior design in a subtle way. The diagonal and straight lines of wood behind the receptiondesk is suppose to symbolise the energy in the building.

the smart office Sitting still by your work desk for a long period of time, or having trouble finding a free work space, even though some space in the office stands completely unused. This is the background to Intelligent Office Solutions - Input interior’s smart solutions for many of the challenges facing today’s activity-based offices.

Intelligent Office Solutions measures how long you sit or stand and remind you when it's time to change position. In the system you can create personal settings to monitor your motion pattern. The settings will then follow you to where you choose to sit next, and let you know when it's time to switch from sitting to standing to optimize both energy and ergonomics. The system also tells you where your colleagues are in the office, something that is especially appreciated by activity-based workplaces where the employees dependant on the task sits in different places. You can book a workplace or a meeting room and integrate the booking with your calendar. For workplaces that want to streamline their surface use, office managers can access the staff's location distribution and behavioural patterns. The system measures and evaluates which rooms are used the most, how long a meeting is going on for and which rooms are often empty.

Intelligent Office Solutions is a comprehensive concept packaged by Input interior, which was developed to make modern offices more efficient. With the help of smart desktop stands that communicates via WiFi, they are enabling staff to move, save time and evaluate how the office surfaces are being used. All features are compatible with computer, phone and tablet.

case: seb When one of the country’s largest banks leaves three different addresses and move in to a new joint office, it results in 72 000 square meters of office space, 600 meeting rooms and not less than 4 500 employees. SEB’s new headquarters in Arenastaden Solna, is Sweden’s largest office project throughout the ages. SEB’s newly built headquarters are located very close to the Friends Arena and Mall of Scandinavia, The bank is in good company with other headquarters such as Telia and Vattenfall. By moving three of its Stockholm offices to one place, SEB hopes to increase the efficiency and cooperation. An enormous logistical project that takes place on two separate occasions. When the final stage is completed during 2018, a total of 4 500 employees will have moved into the three-parted building, and they will have access to their own desk.

Photo André Pihl

In addition to delivering and installing all the furniture, Input interior also ensures that the furniture meets the requirements for durability, ergonomics and quality. By offering the service IMS - the Interior Management System - Input interior has also ensured that SEB can control its furniture flow continuously on their own accord. The system creates a register of all interior design by displaying each article with a unique QR code that is uploaded in a database. The tool facilitates keeping track of inventory during reorganization.

Secured for the future Wingårdhs who is responsible for the interior environment, has had an important mission in securing the future and ensuring that the interior lasts over time. – In such a giant project, it is better to be timeless instead of trendy, says Helena Toresson, interior designer at Wingårdhs. It's about keeping your eyes on the company values and not looking too much at current trends.

Anna Sandefeldt, interior design and design manager at SEB, believes the system has worked very well.

Creating future-proof environments is not just about working methods and expressions. It is equally important that the interior design lasts for several years.

– We have an easy control over all the furniture; what we have in the office and where it should be situated. Flexibility is a keyword and we sometimes need to make changes, to create a meeting room or turn it in to an office. There QR-labelling is great because we can see exactly what furniture we have and how we can move it around.

– It is important to create a durable interior with furniture that can withstand wear and tear, and materials that age with dignity, says Sara Helder, interior designer at Wingårdhs. Case: SEB

Spontaneous meetings

Green solutions for body and climate

With wifi throughout the house, a lot of seating and flexible solutions, it's possible to work and hold meetings wherever you are.

The flow of the house enables the staff to meet each other in new ways, and it also benefits the staff from a health perspective. – We have made changes to the previous structure where the staff was seated in different departments, and never really had to move around or meet other colleagues. We have chosen to place all the common areas, such as kitchenettes and toilets, against the atrium to make everyone move around and meet each other. We have also chosen to move the stairs and the lifts towards the back, to make all employees move more between the different levels, says Anna Sandefeldt at SEB.

– SEB had a desire to be seen and meet more spontaneously. Since they had previously been spread over three offices, the target was to create "one united SEB", by collecting their employees in one place, and also control their movements in such a way that they meet each other, says Helena Toresson. The three houses are therefore interconnected and contain four different artriums that encourage meetings, friendships and communication.

The new sports center enables the staff to play basketball, and its another sign that SEB has put their employees prosperity first. With a large bicycle garage, which fits around 1 200 bicycles, you are also encouraged to ride the bike to work - not just for health reasons but also for the environment. The office has a clear environmental profile and has been rated as excellent according to the environmental certification BREEAM-SE, through high demands for sustainability in material selection and energy use. Even relatively small things have been done, such as replacing paper mugs for porcelain cups and reuse furniture as far as possible. It proofs that even the largest projects can be sustainable in the smallest detail. n

– The atriums have different functions The first one is vibrant with a lot of life and movement. This is the first thing you meet when you come to SEB and the last one you pass when you go home. A barista bar shields from large flows and there are also different types of seating available; from bar stools to lounge furniture. The second atrium is based on flexibility; There is a large sitting staircase, stackable furniture and chairs that can be moved around. The third atrium is more relaxed with a noticeable at-home feeling. The fourth atrium will serve as an open alternative to the workplace, says Sara Helder.

back to nature At home or at work - most of the time we spend our time indoors surrounded by bad air. Naava wants to reunite people with nature by combining millions of years of natural process with cuttingedge new technology.

1

Aki Soudunsaari was born in Lapland and spent much of his childhood outdoors. With forest and lakes just outside his door, he grew up with what can be considered the world's purest air. As a young teacher, Soudunsaari became seriously ill due to poor indoor air in the school where he worked. As soon as he could stay outdoors in the nature he felt better. He therefore began to think about how he could bring nature inside. That’s how the Naava plant wall was created. Together with his friend Niko Järvinen - an environmentalist and engineer, Soudunsaari began experimenting with plant walls to create a good indoor climate, where the air became both cleaner and more fresher to breathe. After a few years, the first smart plant wall was finished, which, with the help of artificial intelligence, improved the air quality and the moisture in the room. The name Naava fetched the duo from a special type of moss that can only survive where the air is as pure. Roots that cleanses Contrary to what many people think, air purification does not happen through the leaves, but through the roots. Therefore, in the plant module, the plants grow in a system that does not require any soil; The roots are exposed and can absorb the indoor air. In the roots there are microbes that break down harmful chemicals and produce clean and fresh air. The fan system in the wall pumps out the naturalized air in the room. The clean air makes us less tired and more alert - the same effect as 8,000 ordinary plants would provide. Naava’s plant wall is called smart because of the artificial intelligence that makes it completely automated. By reading its surroundings, the wall itself manages its irrigation, light and air systems. You can also control the module remotely, for example increase the effect if several people are in the room at the same time. n Back to nature

case: reaktor The versatile design and technology company Reaktor is constantly evolving and their platform in Helsinki has been designed to do the same. Join an office that took five years to complete, and maybe never gets completely finalised. Reaktor has since the year 2000 gone from a local company in Helsinki to an international player with offices in cities like Tokyo, New York, Amsterdam and Dubai. When the office in Helsinki was being moved, the goal was to find premises that both reflected Reaktor and could be adapted to the specified working method. Finding a suitable building took several years, but also resulted in an office in the heart of Helsinki, adjacent to both the city’s university and the cathedral. The office has been designed in close collaboration with dSign Vertti Kivi & Co and design manager Vertti Kivi at the forefront, who has previously worked with Reaktor in New York. The projects goal was to create an inspiring work environment. The interior of the building was completely refurbished to fit Reaktor, but the solid concrete floor had to be left as it was and was blitzed to meet the demands of a modern office. An office that’s changing constantly The aim was to create an office that reflected the business a proper Reaktor house. It was important to create a versatile work environment that could be adapted and changed with the help of different design and space solutions. All fixtures are specially designed according to Reaktor’s needs. It is possible to change both the office and the working method with meeting rooms that can be transformed into work rooms and space separators that can completely change the workspace. Workstations have special walls that can be written or drawn on when a creative thought comes to mind. Smart digital solutions have been integrated into the interior. For example the employees can control the lighting with an app. Case: Reaktor

Scandinavian Style

From connection to relaxation

Except for in the entrance, Reaktor's logo or their red brand color can not be seen anywhere in the building. The office should remind the employees more of a home than a traditional workplace. The rooms are decorated in a Scandinavian style where unnecessary details have been removed. Although technology plays a central role in Reaktor's work, it was not an element that the company wanted to emphasize. Materials, designs and accessories are inspired by Nordic nature and expresses themselves with wood, wool, blankets and green plants.

The basic structure is the same for each floor. There is a piazza located in the centre where employees can have breakfast and lunch together, have a cup of coffee and socialize. A spiral staircase dressed in greenery joins the piazzas on the different levels. The closer the outer edges of the building is, the quieter it is. For Reaktor it was important that all levels gave the staff the opportunity to work focused in a quiet area. On the sixth floor, the highest level of the house, there is a calm and quiet atmosphere. Here you will have the space to unwind, and use a sauna that’s dressed in burnt oiled wood. A large terrace surrounds the floor and offers a fantastic panoramic view of Helsinkis rooftops. n

– Reaktor has been incredibly involved in the design of the interior and has attached great importance to the function and appearance of the furniture. Products from eighty different furniture manufacturers have been used to suit the office's style and working methods, says Patrik Holmén at Input interior that has handled the delivery and assembly of all loose furnishings. – It's exciting to work with a customer who works with design and wants to be involved in the smallest detail. I think if they lift up a chair, they know more about it than I do, says Patrik. Case: Reaktor

54

The premises reflects Reaktor’s versatility, where the office environment can vary according to needs and working methods. The walls that can be written on are installed in both the meeting rooms and at the workstations, since brainstorming is part of the working method.

Circular sustainability We believe in sustainable production, smart material choices, long-term and conscious purchasing, recycling and responsible innovation. Usage of the earth’s limited resources must be part of a cycle - not a one-way journey to the landfill.
