Winter Season

Like a trip inside a snowglobe, Fairbanks offers winter—guaranteed.

Our top-of-the-world location makes it one of the best places on Earth to see the captivating light of the aurora borealis, experience the exhilarating sport of dog mushing and view amazing outdoor ice sculptures. This surprising trio of events make the Winter Season a traveler’s snowy paradise. Other enthralling activities include cultural celebrations, art exhibitions and sporting events. Skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, curling, tubing and ice hockey abound. Challenge snowcapped hills or birchladen trails by ski or snowshoe or mush a team of huskies through the wilderness. Visit Santa in North Pole, journey above the Arctic Circle or discover the incredible warmth of an Alaska hot spring at the end of an adventure-filled day. Plan for a truly memorable winter expedition in this sparkling land of aurora, ice and snow.

Awe-Inspiring Ice

As soon as winter comes to Fairbanks, ice artists begin creating dazzling works of art from massive blocks of ice. These larger-than-life masterpieces vary every year and never cease to capture both the mind and the imagination. Visit a year-round ice museum to see and learn about ice carving. February through March, the World Ice Art Championships and the International Ice Classic feature exquisite ice sculptures and offer the opportunity to sled down ice slides, wander through ice mazes and frolic in playgrounds made of ice and snow.
