About the event Founded in 1985, the Hampton Roads’ Business Hall of Fame honors individuals whose business innovations, effective management and civic involvement have made a major impact and positive difference in companies and communities throughout Hampton Roads, America’s First Region.

Inductees’ records of achievement must demonstrate: business excellence; courageous thinking and actions; visionary, innovative leadership; and community involvement.

Through these accomplishments, laureates serve as role models for the next generation of business leaders, many of whom are currently Junior Achievement students.

Proceeds from the black-tie dinner and awards ceremony benefit Junior Achievement throughout America’s First Region. Junior Achievement brings the real world into the classroom and afterschool settings with hands-on experiences that teach young people about business, financial literacy, workforce readiness – the economics of life.

In the Greater Hampton Roads Region, more than 400 volunteers from the business and military communities help Junior Achievement make a positive impact on the lives of more than 10,000 K-12 students each year.

Bob Aston

B

ob Aston is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of TowneBank. Aston began his banking career 49 years ago and has served as president and chief executive officer of Citizens Trust Company, Commerce Bank, and BB&T of Virginia. In 1998, he started TowneBank, which has grown to become the largest community based bank in the region with 27 branches and assets of $4.57 billion.

Aston’s first job was delivering newspapers. He considers that work an important step toward shaping his outlook on customer service. He also worked summer construction, and as a senior in high school, began working at Citizens Trust Bank as part of the school’s vocational training program. At the bank, he started as a “gofer” doing whatever was needed – from getting coffee, to delivering mail, to running errands. At the age of 36, he rose to president of that bank.

Today at TowneBank, he leads a team of more than 1,400 employees, an additional 365 real estate agents, and a family of companies that includes banking, mortgage, insurance, investment and real estate services. The TowneBank story is one of friendships and relationships – of a hometown bank with a generous spirit. Over the past 14 years, the bank has certainly grown, but the mission has remained constant.

“When we formed TowneBank, we knew we wanted to get back to the basics of banking,” Aston says. “To us, it’s about friendships and relationships, and building a great community asset. And at the end of the day, it’s important to remember that the quality of life is not about how much money was made. It’s about how we choose to use it. We’re proud to be such a special part of our hometown.”

Aston serves in numerous director and leadership roles across Hampton Roads, including the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Board of Trustees, the Hampton Roads Business Roundtable, Hampton Roads Partnership, Fort Monroe Authority and the Old Dominion University Intercollegiate Foundation.

He is also president and chairman of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation, and a director and past chairman of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

He has received many awards for his dedication. In 2013, Portsmouth Schools Foundation recognized Aston as a Distinguished Alumnus. In 2012, Old Dominion University presented him with the Economic Impact Award. And in 2011, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame honored him with the Distinguished Virginian Award. Additionally he has received numerous awards throughout his career for volunteerism, civic leadership, humanitarianism and community service.

Aston graduated from Cradock High School in Portsmouth and is also a graduate of the National Installment Credit School at the University of Oklahoma and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Virginia.

In 2005, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Old Dominion University.

Aston is married to Cindy Bucher Aston, and is the father of five children and seven grandchildren. He and Cindy reside in Portsmouth.

Augustus C. Miller

A

recognized powerhouse of Hampton Roads, Augustus “Gus” Miller continues to be a vital contributor and leader of the Hampton Roads.

As CEO and chairman of Miller Oil Co. Inc., Miller has built a host of privately owned petroleum distribution and convenience store locations in the state, along with locations outside of the state. Miller also actively participates in the development of a commercial real estate property in Hampton Roads. He, especially, is an engaged philanthropist.

Miller began Miller Oil Co., Inc. in 1977 following the purchase of Exxon’s Heating Oil business. Miller Oil has since diversified and expanded in the convenience stores, commercial fuels and residential HVAC home services markets, making the list of INC. Magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Companies. Under his direction and hands-on involvement, along with his sons, Miller Oil is currently operating over 25 Miller’s Neighborhood Markets throughout the area. Miller serves as a board member of the National Petroleum Council in Washington D.C., appointed by the secretary of energy for the second time.

In other areas, Miller owns, operates and directs the current development of Virginia Regional Commerce Park, a commercial property ideally located in Suffolk. VRCP now houses a 393,000-square-foot warehouse building, which is operating at full occupancy.

Miller’s energy extends to his philanthropic interests. As a strong advocate of children’s wellness and education, he and wife, Deanne, organized The Miller Oil Foundation in 2004 and he serves in its governing committee. To date, the foundation has awarded many grants to local charities such as The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, St. Mary’s Home for the Disabled Children, EdMarc Hospice for Children, and many others. He continues to be an active participant of the foundation’s annual fundraising efforts, such as the Charity Golf Classic and the Chairman’s Reception.

A supporter of fine arts and rare books, he served as a member of the National Board of the Smithsonian, and is now the chairman of the Smithsonian Libraries, encompassing 20 libraries within the institution. He is also a member of the board for TowneBank of Virginia Beach.

In the past, Miller was chairman of the board for the Chrysler Museum, appointed to the President’s Advisory Committee of The Kennedy Center for the Arts and also served on the Military Aviation Museum board. Locally, he was a past chair of the Children’s Foundation and Health System of The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Anne B. Shumadine

A

nne B. Shumadine is a founder and chairman at Signature. Founded in 1994, Signature serves families of wealth, managing the complexity that comes with success. Signature’s 38 employees help guide clients to realize the full potential of their wealth, by managing and coordinating their investments, philanthropy, generational transfers, income tax management and much more.

In addition to leading the firm and working with clients on a daily basis, Shumadine is recognized as a leader in the Hampton Roads business community. She has been honored across Virginia as an outstanding legal professional and as an accomplished adviser to families of wealth.

In 2011, Shumadine received the Citizen Lawyer Award from the William and Mary School of Law and the Barron F. Black Community Builder Award from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Shumadine also was recognized in 2011 by LEAD Hampton Roads with its Visionary Award for business leaders.

Nationally, Shumadine has been recognized with numerous industry awards, consisting of an inclusion to REP. magazine’s “Top 10 Women RIA Owners in 2013” and the publication’s 2012 “Top 25 Women RIAs” ranking. Outside of being honored with national and local awards, Shumadine is frequently called upon by top-tier media outlets, offering her insight and expertise on a variety of wealth management issues. To date, she has been featured in articles published in Worth magazine, Virginia Business, Family Business, Financial Planning, Private Wealth, and more.

Shumadine is active in the business community in Hampton Roads and serves on the boards of numerous nonprofit institutions. Her previous positions include past president of ACCESS College Foundation, former trustee of the Chrysler Museum of Art, former rector of the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University, former member of the Advisory Board of the William and Mary Tax Conference, and former director of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads.

Currently, she is rector of the Board of Visitors of Eastern Virginia Medical School, a trustee and chair of the investment committee at Virginia Wesleyan College, a trustee of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a trustee of ACCESS College Foundation, a trustee of the ODU Educational Foundation, and a member of the Wellesley College Business Leadership Council.

Shumadine is a graduate of Wellesley College and the MarshallWythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. She decided to attend law school in her 40s and graduated first in her class.

In her spare time, Shumadine enjoys gardening and spending time with her husband and family, which includes three grandchildren. She is fond of travel and cites a 2010 trip to China as her favorite, creating a book afterward to summarize the experience.

Jordan E. Slone

J

ordan E. Slone is chairman and CEO of Harbor Group International, a diversified real estate investment and financial services company with offices in the United States and Israel and properties in four different countries.

HGI’s property portfolio of Class A office buildings and apartment complexes exceeds 3.8 billion dollars. Slone has been a guest speaker at real estate industry conferences around the world.

Prior to forming Harbor Group in 1985, he was co-founder and vice president of International Spring Corp., a Portsmouth manufacturer of inner box springs for the mattress industry.

In 1986, the Slone family sold International Spring to Leggett and Platt Inc., a Fortune 500 company.

Slone serves on the board of directors of USA Discounters, a furniture retailer and finance company with 21 stores across the United States. In addition, he is a member of the National MultiHousing Council Board.

Slone was instrumental in the founding of three Hampton Roads area nonprofit private schools and continues to actively support them. He is a past President of B’nai Israel Congregation and is a current member of the International Board of Directors of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.

LOCAL HISTORY Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads, founded in 1966, serves the Hampton Roads area with the assistance of over 400 volunteers. In the 2012-2013 school year JA programs reached over 10,000 K-12 students with the message of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Proceeds from the Hall of Fame underwrite the many programs of Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads, which serves more than 10,000 children each year in America’s First Region.

Courses are offered in grades K-12 and are designed to build financial literacy, stimulate entrepreneurial spirit, and promote the success of children in all social and economic groups. Activities take place in more than 100 schools and organizations and are supported by the efforts of more than 400 volunteers from the local community who give generously of their time and experience.
