“ Kate helped me realise that by organising my time a little better and just making small changes to my life, I could still manage my job and enjoy being Mum – there was room for both.” Jill – Hove “Kate’s no nonsense approach, asking me the questions I’ve been avoiding asking myself, led me to realise that what I thought I wanted and actually wanted were 2 different things, what a relief to let go and actually focus on how I’m going to achieve what I really want.” David – Brighton

“I was SO tired of looking at never ending ‘to do’ lists that I added to each day. Working with Kate helped me prioritise my tasks made me answerable to someone other than myself which really kept me focused, a bit like a personal trainer I guess? I actually feel like I have some me time now.” Glynn – Hove “Starting my own business was daunting enough but then trying to stay on top of it all, as well as coping with 2 kids and a husband nearly finished me off. Kate worked with me to put process and procedures in place which then made me feel more in control which was why I wanted to work for myself in the first place!” Ingrid – Brighton “I was finding life hard, friends and family were busy and I just wanted someone to support me. Kate came into my life and has made me feel like we are a team; she cares about what I want and how we are going to achieve it. She remembers to ask the questions others don’t and is nearly as excited as me when I reach one of my goals. I couldn’t recommend the experience enough – truly life changing.” Petra – Worthing

INECITY makes a welcome return to the city this November, celebrating its tenth edition since inception in 2003. Stretching across the whole city into ten different locations including Duke of York’s Picturehouse, University of Brighton Galleries, Komedia, The Basement, and Brighton Royal Pavilion, each venue will host an array of exciting events from the festival’s packed programme. The eighteen day long festival kicks off on November 15th with a special mix of premieres and previews, debut feature screenings (including Summer of Giacomo, pictured), artists’ cinema and installations, treasures from the archive, retrospectives, free education screenings and events, talks and debates. In previous years CINECITY has given Brighton audiences exclusive first screenings of highly anticipated and critically acclaimed films, such as Oscar winners The Artist and The king’s 20 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

Speech, and this year promises to follow suit in quality and variety. A unique aspect of the festival each year is the celebration of music in cinema, showcased with film scores and original underscores being performed by musicians alongside screenings. This year a screening of the film Drive at the Duke of York’s will be preceded with a live set by College, whose track ‘A Real Hero’ prominently features in the film. Also in this year’s programme is the Music Weekender hosted by The Basement featuring a schedule of music documentaries including Hit me With Music; an infectious documentary, exploring the Jamaican dancehall explosion, Grandma Lo-Fi: The Basement Tapes of Sigridur Nielsdottir; a charming portrait of a Danish woman who discovered music at the tender age of 70, producing a stream of albums recorded on a hi-fi in her kitchen; Turning; following the touring of a performance by Antony and the Johnsons

and Charles Atlas, and Do You Love Me Like I Love You The final three films made by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard featuring a compelling collage of famous and unknown individuals talking directly to camera about what the music of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds means to them. A special event screening of Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon in the Royal Pavilion Music Room this year will continue the festival’s legacy of screening films in unexpected locations. In 2005 Brighton Crime Town, an exploration of the underbelly of Brighton life in film form, took place in the cells of the former Brighton Police Station. Since then CINECITY have presented events in locations as varied as the Prince Regent Swimming Pool and Brighton Sea Life Centre (both for White Night), as well as creating mini pop-up cinemas in various bars and gallery spaces across town.

CINECITY Pop-Up Cinema Bookshop and Reading Room, stocking a range of new titles across the entire spectrum of cinema and the moving image. It will also feature a used/second-hand section, the proceeds of which will go to The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, which helps a diverse range of people across film, cinema and television who encounter accident, illness, bereavement or unemployment. Unwanted film and cinema books or back issues of magazines such as Sight & Sound can be donated to support the work of the CTBF and can be dropped off at the Duke of York's.

CINECITY runs from: 15th November – 2nd December. For more information on the festival, and for the latest on additions to the schedule visit cine-city.co.uk.

• Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the garlic, chilli, paprika, bay leaves, rosemary and cumin seeds and heat for around 30 seconds to release the flavours.• Add all the vegetables and sauté for 2 minutes, fully coating them in all the spices. • Add the stock, bring to the boil and then turn down the heat. Simmer for around 45 minutes. • Allow the soup to cool and then blend with a hand whisk, adding more stock if neccessary until you have the desired consistancy. • Serve with a swirl of crème fraîche and some crusty bread.

• 2 tbsp. olive oil • sprig of rosemary • 2 bay leaves • 3 garlic cloves crushed • 1/2 chopped medium chilli • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed • 2 carrots, roughly chopped • 1 large potato, peeled and cubed • 2 celery sticks chopped • 1 medium onion, chopped • pinch cumin seeds • 1/2 tsp. chilli powder • pinch smoked paprika • 2 pints/1 litre veg • Salt and pepper for seasoning

• Heat oil in a large saucepan and add the onion, carrot and fennel. Cook until soft and stir in the tomato puree with a pinch of salt and pepper. • Add the tomatoes, beetroot and stock. Bring to a simmer for around 35-40minutes, cooking until the beetroot is soft. • We recommend leaving this soup quite chunky, but you can use a hand blender for a smoother consistency. • Season with salt and pepper to taste, garnish with the basil or flat leaf parsley parsley, and stir in a spoonful of crème fraîche or yoghurt.

• 1 large red onion, finely chopped • 1 large carrot roughly chopped • 600g ripe tomatoes roughly chopped • 1 medium fresh beetroot, peeled and chopped • 1 small fennel bulb, roughly chopped • 1tbsp tomato puree • 1tbsp olive oil • 1 litre vegetable stock • Fresh basil or flat leaf parsley to garnish • Salt and pepper

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

ON Your Bike!

Optimise your cycling position Local osteopath Ross Skilton talks health and wellbeing. This issue some tips to optimising your cycling postition to reduce strain.

T

eam GB and Paralympic GB cyclists had an impressive medal haul at London 2012. Getting the most out of your bike isn’t all about stamina and legwork though; the way you set up your bike is crucial! For the average person, cycling should not cause significant strain on the arms, legs, back or neck. If you find you are suffering discomfort when cycling, try these tips to set up your bike correctly (you might need to ask a friend to help you):

1. Saddle Height You should be able to sit on the saddle with the balls of both feet on the ground. With your heel on the pedal at its lowest point, you should be able to fully straighten your leg whilst remaining seated; with the ball of your foot on the pedal, your knee should be slightly bent. At the pedal’s highest point, the knee should not go above saddle height.

2. Saddle position With the pedals horizontal to each other and the balls of your feet on the pedals, your knee joint should be directly above (or just behind) the centre of the forward pedal. If not, you may need to move the saddle forwards/ backwards on its rails. 26 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

3. Handlebars The crossbar should be roughly saddle height. Slightly lower improves aerodynamics but requires the lower back to curve more. Slightly higher reduces lower back strain but increases wind resistance, requiring more effort to pedal. Drop handlebars or bar end extensions on straighter handlebars allow the rider to adopt different riding positions as needed. Handlebars should be roughly shoulder width to allow better breathing through an unrestricted ribcage.

4. Pedals Toe clips or a clipless pedal/cleated shoe combination will reduce strain on your thighs as they allow power to be applied more evenly. They should be adjusted so the ball of your foot is over the centre of the pedal (or just behind if you have small feet). The new riding position may feel strange or even uncomfortable at first, so let your body adjust gradually, building the distance you ride as you acclimatise to the new set-up. If you continue to experience problems, I recommend visiting a reputable cycling shop for further advice. You might find manual therapy can help your body adapt more easily to your riding position and relieve associated symptoms. More importantly than any of the above tips: always wear a helmet!

rgonaut is celebrating the end of its second year this September. Established by Stephen Dering and Gill Winstanley who are both deaf, Argonaut is a not for profit social firm that delivers gardening, plumbing and electrical services to homes across Brighton, Hove and Sussex. What makes Argonaut unique is that all the employees have a disability from deafness to learning disability to cerebral palsy. “Our staff value the real work opportunities that we are able to give them,” says Gill. “Many will be have been out of work for a long time and lack the confidence to do well in job interviews.” Christopher from Rottingdean is profoundly deaf and wanted to be a plumber. He gained his level 2 at college but no employer wanted to take him on despite there being a shortage of plumbers. After 3 years looking he joined Argonaut where

we helped him to get his level 3 and he is now a certified plumbing and heating engineer managing a team in Brighton. "If it wasn't for Argonaut, I would still be looking for a job," says Christoper. Gardener Jase from Portslade has never worked since leaving college despite holding qualifications because of his learning disabilities and there was no support to find work. Yet he is part of the Argonaut’s Gardening team in demand across Brighton and Hove. The more work that Argonaut can take on, the more local disabled people that will be able to benefit from the same opportunities that Jase and Christopher have had.
