ARTS & CULTURE
T
his Easter there are some great opportunities for everyone of all ages to get involved with learning a creative new skill – animation. With workshops, short courses and a community of local artists and filmmakers eager to share their knowledge, it may even turn into a new passion. At the start of the year a local stir was made, when a video showcasing Brighton in all its sunny glory was made by teenager Caleb Yule. Within a few short weeks of being uploaded online, it has gained nearly 200,000 views. Although it looked like it could have been filmed with a video camera, in fact the film is made up of over 45,000 still images, which when set in sequence they create the unique time lapse effect. This technique is the same as used in stop-motion animations, such as the popular Aardman films. Each frame is individually captured, with minute changes to the sets and characters in each image. It’s only when the still frames are put together that the action comes alive. For local filmmaker Evan Wilkinson, it is early memories of Christmas-time Wallace and Gromit films that first inspired him to give stop-motion animating a try; “I have always been fascinated by the different examples of stop-motion that I saw growing up, and for
16 | INSIDE MAGAZINE
Get animated me, stop-motion has a quality to it different from other animation. There is something mysterious and beautiful about seeing puppets move and come to life. It is an illusion that holds so much power”. It’s this technique which is used by artist and animator Will Bishop Stephens, who is running a short course on character animation at West Dean College in June. During the three day workshop, attendees will work using still image digital cameras to make their own frame by frame animated film – a simple method with wonderfully satisfying results. Brighton based photographer Janine Boyer has used the technique in the past for a range of community workshops, together with artist Rosie Holmes, in collaboration with Ambitious About Autism (formerly Treehouse), The Bristol Estate, The Brighton Women’s Centre and the Brighton & Hove Adult Learning Festival. “It’s a real privilege to work with such a creative and diverse range of people. The animations were great fun to make, required no prior knowledge and gave a voice to those who took part. Participant’s made new connections, said they thoroughly enjoyed the process and were, quite rightly, very proud of the final animation”. For younger animators there are two great workshops
happening in April. Inspired by exhibitions at the Brighton & Hove museums, the World Stories and My Favourite Toy workshops will have you bringing your imagination to life using animation software, with the films premiered in front of the groups. “Watching your animation come to life is like watching
magic happen in front of your eyes”, adds Evan. “You control everything, but the first time you watch your work back, and see your characters move as if they have a life of their own, it’s incredible. It’s so much fun to introduce new people to animation, and see that same reaction in them”.

Contrast feminine fabrics with heavy boyish Dr Marten shoes, available in a range of spring colours. Flowers are always a sure trend of spring, blooming again for 2012 on the runway for Christopher Kane and Erdem. For maximum impact don’t be afraid to mix and layer prints.”

Pairing a print shirt with basic chino shorts can be worked into a variety of looks - Keep it casual with pastel Vans, or smarten up with leather shoes. Don’t forget your accessories – a good canvas rucksack is essential for spring explorers.”

lbion in the Community does incredible work in Sussex, and further afield, and their staff are pretty special too. On April 15th, AITC’s Dan Lawson will run the Brighton marathon eight times back-to-back all in aid of his employers. Dan will pound the streets of Brighton to raise money for AITC’s groundbreaking work in Asia: the OSCAR programme, which educates thousands of youngsters in youth leadership and conflict resolution in Mumbai, and at the Football Club of Canocona in Goa, India. The 39-year-old completed the race an incredible four 24 | INSIDE MAGAZINE
times last year and readily admits his obsession with running is an addiction – albeit a healthy one. He’s continually looking for the next test of endurance. In 2009, Dan completed the Kon Kan Coast Challenge; 380 miles in ten days from Mumbai down to Patnem Beach in Goa. “I’m not really doing anything different in preparation for the eight marathons,” explained Dan. “I get up early most days and just absolutely love it. As soon as you tell yourself you’re going to run 200 miles you can do it. The power of the mind is incredibly strong. I believe my physique helps. I’m quite light on my feet when I run, as opposed to some people I run with who tend to pound the ground harder.”

As you’d expect with such a punishing schedule, Dan is prone to exhaustion. On average, he runs 45 miles a week and stands at his Amex stadium desk during the day. “As soon as I sit down anywhere, without any stimulation, I am out like a light!” A thrice weekly diet of yoga certainly helps with the punishment suffered by the body. ust before Christmas, Caroline Morris found out about a friend’s devastating breast cancer diagnosis. Inspired by the positive emotional strength she has witnessed, she is now calling on her own strength in an amazing Amazonian cycle for charity. In September Caroline sets off cycling from the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains across to the Amazon jungle. She has spent the last few months fundraising for the event, since her friend Emma was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in December. “She’s been amazing through everything so far, even though she’s had a mastectomy at the age of 35 and is having to endure horrendous chemo, losing her hair and nasty drugs and treatments”. Inspired by the strength that Emma continues to show, Caroline is determined to match this strength; “I chose Peru as it’s a real challenge and I’ll be attempting to cycle at high altitudes which make it even harder”. For those affected by breast cancer, an invaluable part of treatment is guidance and support, both practically and emotionally, and this is just what Breast Cancer Care provides. As a charity it brings together people affected by breast cancer, while campaigning for improvements in standards of support and care and promoting the importance of early detection. 26 | INSIDE MAGAZINE
At the time of writing this article (March 2012), Caroline has raised a massive £3540 for the charity, and now hopes to smash her £4,275 target. Speaking about her friend, it is clear that her admiration extends further than the courage Emma has shown since her diagnosis; “She makes me laugh a lot, and is probably the most thoughtful person I know”. It is this motivation of friendship which will keep her firmly on two wheels until her mission is complete.
