“ Kate helped me realise that by organising my time a little better and just making small changes to my life, I could still manage my job and enjoy being Mum – there was room for both.” Jill – Hove “Kate’s no nonsense approach, asking me the questions I’ve been avoiding asking myself, led me to realise that what I thought I wanted and actually wanted were 2 different things, what a relief to let go and actually focus on how I’m going to achieve what I really want.” David – Brighton

“I was SO tired of looking at never ending ‘to do’ lists that I added to each day. Working with Kate helped me prioritise my tasks made me answerable to someone other than myself which really kept me focused, a bit like a personal trainer I guess? I actually feel like I have some me time now.” Glynn – Hove “Starting my own business was daunting enough but then trying to stay on top of it all, as well as coping with 2 kids and a husband nearly finished me off. Kate worked with me to put process and procedures in place which then made me feel more in control which was why I wanted to work for myself in the first place!” Ingrid – Brighton “I was finding life hard, friends and family were busy and I just wanted someone to support me. Kate came into my life and has made me feel like we are a team; she cares about what I want and how we are going to achieve it. She remembers to ask the questions others don’t and is nearly as excited as me when I reach one of my goals. I couldn’t recommend the experience enough – truly life changing.” Petra – Worthing

MUSIC

Tiny Dragons are the Brighton based three-piece with a small name making a BIG sound.

I

n fact everything about this year so far has been big for Tiny Dragons. From winning various battle of the bands, releasing a second (and frankly, amazing) EP, to playing for the fashion elite from around the world at a Hussein Chalayan party for London Fashion Week in Somerset House. The band came together at the end of 2010, and after a few swaparounds the band found its perfect fit; with Lizzie’s powerful soul-filled vocals, Jim’s ‘subtle but harsh’ lyrical guitar riffs and Marcus’ solid drum beats. They had their first gig at The Hobgoblin and haven’t stopped gigging since, both in Brighton and across the UK.

With influences as varied as 90s dance and house to South American Latin and John Bonham, it’s difficult to put a pin exactly on what their sound is, although they describe themselves as ‘Alternative soul dance music’. Whatever you call it, somehow these influences come together to create something instantly likeable, feeling both familiar and unique at the same time. “Each of us has such a big musical pallet in terms of our influences, but when we write songs we’re trying to make the best thing the three of us can create, rather than another version of what someone else has done”. So far, so good. The band’s summer vibes make them a perfect fit for the festival season and they’ll be on the road starting at Meadowlands in Lewes, stopping in Cheltenham and

Suffolk before travelling as far as Rennes in France. “The thing we love about festivals is they’re like a magnet, drawing in so many different types of bands and so many different people who are all there to experience new music, rather than just enjoying what they already know. We played Swanfest in Farnborough and every sort of person you could put a tag on was there enjoying it together”. With such a busy few months ahead it looks like we’ll be waiting until September for the band to play in the city again, but they assure us that despite originating from all across the country they intend to remain Brighton based; “The diversity of Brighton is like nowhere else, there’s such a sense of freedom here”. So what’s in the future for Tiny Dragons? “It’s all about progression. We want to keep releasing music as creatively as possible on a budget, so we’re going to start self releasing singles”. It’s through this clear dedication the band is gaining a loyal following, hooking in new supporters wherever they play with their infectious beats that you can’t help but dance to.

ARTS & CULTURE

The rise of

Boutique

Festivals

T

his year sees the rise of the boutique festival like never before, with more and more people seeking a weekend of fully immersive arts and culture over the festival giants such as Reading and Leeds, T in the Park and the heavily branded V Festival.

After years of the same bands filling the festival circuit line up, people are looking for more than just a weekend of mediocrity. Plenty of new festivals are fitting the bill, with art, poetry, comedy, cabaret, and literature featured as main attractions alongside the music stages. Like Glastonbury, Lounge On The Farm (6 - 8th July, 16 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

Playgroup festival Image © Brendan Bell Merton Farm, Canterbury) takes place on a real working farm and boasts ‘delicious locally sourced food and a family friendly atmosphere’ among its assets. The marketvibe weekend fits food and vintage stalls alongside five stages of music which last year won best line-up at the UK festival awards. This year sees sets from Emilie Sandé, Slow Club and Roots Manuva, amongst others. Home-grown Playgroup Festival will be taking away a little bit of Brighton this summer (3rd - 5th August, Eridge Park, Tunbridge Wells) for three days of eclectic fun. This year’s theme is ‘Lost toys of our youth’, with each ticket holder allocated a character to dress up as and become; expect a dreamlike weekend of life-sized teddy bears walking hand in hand with

toy soldiers and dinosaurs. The festival promotes emerging grassroots talent from across the South East alongside its more established line up, as well as cabaret stages, healing fields and a children’s arena. For the wild at heart there’s Wilderness Festival (1012th August, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire), where nature and the beautiful landscapes of the park share headline status among the likes of Spiritualized, Lianne La Havas and Willy Mason. Festival goers are encouraged to get lost and become free spirits, joining in with ‘banquets under canopies, tented talks, midnight masked balls, barefoot dancing, parkland processions and ritualistic revelry’. With Glastonbury taking a break this year it’s a chance for up and coming festivals to find their new crowd. Take a chance away from the big name headliners and you are sure to be rewarded in unique and unexpected ways.

FOOD & DRINK

PORTOBELLO

MUSHROOM PIE In this issue, Brighton’s original vegetarian restaurant Food for Friends have kindly offered us one of their delicious recipes that we can all make at home. We hope you will enjoy making these as much as we did.

These little pies are really cute and are both simple and quick to make. If you wish, you can make the pastry cases and salad in advance, and cook the potatoes beforehand too. Then, just before you want to eat, panfry the fillings, finish the pies and warm them through in the oven.

P

reheat the oven to 190°C/gas mark 5. Lightly grease and line a large baking tray with baking paper. Melt half the butter over a gentle heat. Take the readyrolled pastry sheets and measure out a first square, 14cm by 14cm but do not cut through two of the facing corners. Then inside that square cut another slightly smaller square, 12cm by 12cm again without completely cutting through two facing corners. Brush the outside edge lightly with melted butter. Take one of the outside corners and fold it over diagonally to line up with the inside corner of the square; this will give you two little twists of pastry on the other corners – the photographs

22 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

will help. Then repeat this again from the opposite side, so that it folds over itself again and you have a box shape. Brush it with melted butter and place it carefully on the baking tray. Repeat until you have 6 boxes. If you want lids for your boxes, cut six little squares 7cm x 7cm to be the tops of the pies. Brush them with melted butter too, and place them on the baking tray. Put the pie cases in the oven for 15 minutes or until they are golden brown. Next, put the new potatoes in a pan of cold water, bring to the boil and cook for 20–25 minutes until they have cooked through. When they are done, drain them thoroughly and put them in a bowl. Drizzle them with a little herb or olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Mix the salad leaves with the toasted almonds and place on individual plates or in a large bowl. Just before serving the pies, slice the beetroot into wedges and put them on top of the leaves. Drizzle the salad with some balsamic dressing.

Take a frying pan and melt the rest of the butter over a medium heat. Sauté the mushrooms with the garlic and then add the baby spinach leaves and allow them to wilt. Then add the mozzarella and cook for 2 minutes until it is slightly melted. Spoon this mixture into the pastry cases and warm them through in the oven for 5 minutes. Serve with the beetroot salad and new potatoes. From ‘Food for Friends: Modern Vegetarian Cooking at Home’ by Jane and Ramin Mostowfi, £16.99. Rockinghorse and Rizzle Kicks team up to make hospital experience easier for young people

T

his April Brighton-based children’s charity Rockinghorse invited chart topping Rizzle Kicks for a visit to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.

Teenagers being treated at the Alex were surprised by the Brighton hip-hop duo Jordan ‘Rizzle’ Stephens and Harley ‘Sylvester’ Alexander-Sule, both 20, who put their support behind Rockinghorse to officially open its new adolescent rooms at the hospital. The project included refurbishment of three rooms, with comfortable sofas and chairs, DVD players, table football, game consoles and a pool table. The stars spent time playing with some of the young people, including a game of table football, and signed autographs before moving on to meet and have their photos taken with other children staying on the wards. Jordan commented on the new teenage rooms: “It’s important to have a space to be away from medical procedures, especially if you’re young and in hospital. It was really cool to meet some 24 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

of the children here today - they were all lovely.” The ethos of the hospital is family centred care, providing state-of-the-art facilities in a comfortable, welcoming, safe and secure environment. Last year, the hospital treated over 2,000 teenage patients. The new rooms allow distraction from hospital life and a comfortable space to unwind and help them feel more at home, adding to the already excellent services at the Alex, which are provided by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH). Jess Allen, 16 from Brighton, is a fan of the famous pair and they chatted about her meeting Justin Bieber last year and, after seeing Jess’s pile of magazines on her bed, Jordan admitted to his love of gossip magazines. Rizzle Kicks’ careers took off last year following the success of their debut album, Stereo Typical, and a number one hit single, Heart Skips a Beat, with Olly Murs. Allie Polhill, Rockinghorse’s Senior Fundraising and Marketing Manager, said: “It was a great afternoon and the young people really enjoyed Rizzle Kicks’ visit. We’re so grateful to Jordan and Harley for sparing time out from their hectic schedules to open our teenage

rooms and meet some of the children at the Alex. fter six months and two million pounds plus, Brighton Sea Life Centre finally re-opened its doors to the public in May. The centre was opened in 1872, making it the world’s oldest operating aquarium and in need of some structural and cosmetic restoration. As well as replacing the concrete from the 1927 extension of the aquarium, a team of specialists have been working to restore the Victorian architecture in the main arcade section of the building. During the refurbishment the larger marine creatures were moved to other Sea Life centres around the UK, while the smaller creatures were housed in a temporary tank on a purpose built platform holding up the 25 tonne weight. 26 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

The work carried out at the centre wasn’t all structural, as they took the opportunity to build two new exciting features. Jellyfish Discovery is a UK Sea Life Centre first, with five new tanks housing colourful tropical jellyfish from around the world. You’ll be able to view these fascinating creatures like never before, with their graceful motion and ghost-like forms displayed in a spellbinding spectacle that reveals their mysterious lives and world in a totally new light. If you’ve visited the Sea Life centre before, now is your chance to get a different perspective of the aquarium, in the new Behind the Scenes tour. Visitors will be able to see first hand how the 1,500 + sea creatures are cared for, viewing how life support, filtration and water quality systems work, how food is prepared for the animals,

plus all breeding and research areas – it’s a fun and interactive experience not to be missed! Go to the brain teasers page to find out how you could win a Sea Life Annual Pass, to enjoy the aquarium all year round!
