“ Kate helped me realise that by organising my time a little better and just making small changes to my life, I could still manage my job and enjoy being Mum – there was room for both.” Jill – Hove “Kate’s no nonsense approach, asking me the questions I’ve been avoiding asking myself, led me to realise that what I thought I wanted and actually wanted were 2 different things, what a relief to let go and actually focus on how I’m going to achieve what I really want.” David – Brighton

“I was SO tired of looking at never ending ‘to do’ lists that I added to each day. Working with Kate helped me prioritise my tasks made me answerable to someone other than myself which really kept me focused, a bit like a personal trainer I guess? I actually feel like I have some me time now.” Glynn – Hove “Starting my own business was daunting enough but then trying to stay on top of it all, as well as coping with 2 kids and a husband nearly finished me off. Kate worked with me to put process and procedures in place which then made me feel more in control which was why I wanted to work for myself in the first place!” Ingrid – Brighton “I was finding life hard, friends and family were busy and I just wanted someone to support me. Kate came into my life and has made me feel like we are a team; she cares about what I want and how we are going to achieve it. She remembers to ask the questions others don’t and is nearly as excited as me when I reach one of my goals. I couldn’t recommend the experience enough – truly life changing.” Petra – Worthing

Cit y Rea ds T his September the city will be encouraged once again to find a comfy spot and get lost in the pages of a good book. Brighton & Hove City Reads returns across September and October for a month of special events and activities taking place in libraries, community centres, pubs, book shops and the hub of the festival at The Old Market.
policeman. With both Marion and Patrick longing for a claim on his affections a new world previously unknown to Tom is opened up to him. But in a time when those of ‘minority status’ were condemned by society and law, a smokescreen is put in place and the two lovers must share ‘their policeman’, until one breaks and three lives implode.
The City Reads festival is an annual event which aims to spread a love of books and ideas to the widest possible audience, selecting one book by one author for the whole community to read, discuss, debate and creatively engage with in a series of special events, workshops and performances. Past books selected for the festival have included well known and well loved titles from around the world, including Ian Fleming’s From Russia, With Love, Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief and Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. This year for the first time the selected work comes from a place closer to home in the form of Bethan Roberts’ beautiful new novel My Policeman, set in 1950s Brighton.
The diverse programme of City Reads events has been planned to explore not just the plot of My Policeman, but also the themes, politics, setting and even the era of the story. A highlight, Tales From The Spotted Dog, (2nd-4th October) will feature performances and readings inspired by My Policeman, with The Old Market transformed into a facsimile of Brighton’s famous 50s watering hole. Jubilee Library will be host to a series screenings featuring iconic gay films free for the public, including Maurice (23rd September) and Prick Up Your Ears (30th September). For fans of all things 1950s there’s a 50s Make-up Masterclass with Tasleen Carstairs, or get your retro kicks at the vintage fair – a celebration of 50s music, fashion and fads.
My Policeman unfolds through the dual narratives of Marion, a newly qualified teacher, and Patrick, curator at Brighton Museum, whose lives are turned into a tender and tragic love triangle after the arrival of Tom, who has returned from National Service to be a
The festival gives the chance for everyone to be included and enjoy the book with read aloud groups taking place every week at both Hove and Jubilee library. The month of events concludes with Bethan Roberts in conversation with Lynne Truss, best known for her bestselling book

I’m absolutely thrilled that My Policeman has been chosen for this year’s City Reads. I first fell in love with Brighton when I was sixteen and on a day trip. The edgy glamour of the seafront, the intriguing buzz of the cafes and the unique atmosphere of the town totally seduced me. Writing My Policeman was a joy because it allowed me to indulge my passion for the place I’ve called home for the last seventeen years. The prospect of having so many people in my home town reading my novel is enormously exciting, and I feel very honoured to be a part of this wonderful project. – Bethan Roberts.
Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation. Find out what drew Bethan to the book’s subject and themes and discover the challenges of stepping back five decades into Brighton’s past. Everyone loves burgers and there's no reason why a burger can't be healthy as well as tasty; this issue we make some delicious gourmet vegetarian burgers with homemade chips. The aubergine, mushroom, tomato and grilled mozzarella go great together and mushrooms make the burger extra juicy so you don't need to over do it with sauce!
Serves 2 • 1 Aubergine • 2 large mushrooms (field or Portobello) • 2 Ciabattas • 1 Beef Tomato • 5 Medium potatoes • Salt & pepper • Paprika • Rosemary • Garlic puree • Olive oil • Rocket
BURGER • Cut the aubergines into thick round slices and sprinkle with salt, leave for around 30 minutes before rinsing the salt; this stops the aubergine absorbing too much oil during cooking, and also adds flavour. Pat the aubergine dry before cooking. • Brush the mushrooms and aubergines with a little olive oil and garlic puree and season with paprika and pepper. • Heat oil in a large frying pan and place in the mushrooms, cooking for 5-8 minutes on each side. Fry the aubergine slices until soft and lightly browned, place on kitchen paper to remove excess oil. • Top the mushrooms with mozzarella and melt under the grill. • Warm up the ciabattas in the oven and lightly spread with mayonnaise. • Layer the aubergine, mushroom and tomato in the ciabatta, season and garnish with rocket. • The burger is delicious as it is, or why not try adding avocado, caramelised onion or salsa.
CHIPS • Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Drizzle a tray with oil and place in the oven to heat for 5 – 10 minutes. • Cut up 5 medium potatoes into thick wedges, place in a pan of cold water and bring to boil for around 2 minutes and drain. • Spread the chips evenly over the baking tray, season with salt, pepper and rosemary, giving the tray a good shake. • Cook for 25 – 30 minutes until brown and crispy shaking again halfway through.

O
steopathy differs from other types of manual therapy in that it takes into account the patient’s environment, emotional state and thought processes as well as their physical state when diagnosing and managing their condition. It recognises that no two people are the same, so treatment is tailored to the individual. I use a variety of techniques to relieve pain and improve how the body is functioning. These can include massage and stretching techniques to relax tight muscles and techniques to improve joint movement, such as joint articulation and manipulation (that wellknown clicking often associated with osteopathy), to name just a few. I first visited an osteopath at Glastonbury Festival several years ago, after a particularly back-crippling night in a leaky tent! After the treatment I couldn’t believe it – my pain had gone, I felt taller, more upright and incredibly relaxed! At the time I had a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry but had been yearning to move into a career that gave me more direct involvement in patient care. It was the positive experience I’d had of osteopathic treatment combined with an awareness of the varied side-effects that pharmaceutical drugs can cause that led me to embark on a career in osteopathy – a drug-free approach to healthcare. I set up South Downs Osteopathy last year following the completion of a 5-year Masters Degree in Osteopathy at the British School of Osteopathy. Whilst there I attended specialist clinics in sports injury, pregnancy care, paediatrics, elderly care and pain management in patients with HIV, in addition to working with the NHS in GP and hospital settings. It was immensely rewarding being able to offer osteopathy to a much broader section of the population and this is something I have been keen to offer in my own practice.

I am committed to providing a high quality service to my local community. I run clinics at 40 Wilbury Road and next to Preston Park Station and can also offer home visits on request. Unfortunately osteopathy is not available free on the NHS in Brighton & Hove, however I offer a 25% discount to patients referred to me by their NHS GP. My hope is that this will go a small way to giving osteopathy the recognition in our city that it deserves, as an effective, holistic form of manual medicine that can be highly effective at treating people of all ages and backgrounds with a variety of musculoskeletal pains from head to toe. SPOTLIGHT ON...
We Love local independEnt businesses, this issue we TALK TO Carole JORDAN from BRIGHTON’s Business Heads What are your favourite 3 places in Brighton? I have loads but if I have to choose..... I spend a lot of time in Red Roaster, it’s just round the corner to our office and it’s the best coffee shop in town! In the evenings I love to dance. I’ve just discovered Latin Lounge in West St which serves Brazilian, Cuban and Mexican Food and has great music. I’m just back from Cuba and so it reminds me of that wonderful place. When I’m not dancing I’m listening to music, I’m still a CD fan and so I regularly visit Resident Music in the Lanes, to keep my voracious appetite satisfied with all sorts of funk, reggae, dub and dance music.
What made you set up an Accountants in Brighton? I was living in Westdene and travelling to Worthing for work. I realised small businesses needed a new approach to accountancy. I started from home working as a business consultant and using my accountancy skills and tax knowledge with the wide variety of small businesses here.
What’s the best thing about running a business here? The mix of characters I get to meet every week. Small business owners are great to work with and here in Brighton we don’t stand on ceremony. So I can be myself and still be respected as an expert without being in any way formal.

What is the most useful bit of advice you’ve been given about running your own business?
What would you do if you weren’t an Accountant?
Someone once said to me “don’t be so hard on yourself” and I try to remember that but I do work hard because I want my clients to succeed.
I’d like to be one of those guides that does themed walks around Brighton because I’m very interested in local history.
What is your favourite Brighton annual event?
What’s your best tip for setting up a business in Brighton?
Again, so many. But if I have to choose it would be The Brighton Festival. I go to as many events as I can afford and fit into the time available. I’ve been going for years and BusinessHeads is a Founder of the Dome, we donated when the complex was refurbished and it’s great to visit the complex now it looks so beautiful.

Tell us something we don’t know about Accountancy
www.businessheads.co.uk 01273 882200 | info@businessheads.co.uk
Most people don’t know that Accountancy is not about adding up, it’s about telling a story. The Accounts of a business are the story of that period, I wish people would read them more often because they would learn a lot.
How would you sum up Brighton in 10 words or less? The most fun you can have with your clothes on!
