Paris-based multi-instrumentalist Melody Prochet played in various bands before starting out last year under the name Melody’s Echo Chamber. Mixing fuzzed out psychedelic guitars with a galactic mix of electronica and vocals that sit somewhere between girlish coyness and seductive confidence. All together it makes for a compelling sound, with the self-titled debut album rightly finding its way onto many of the 2012 best lists. facebook.com/MelodysEchoChamber

Eels return for 2013 with tenth studio album Wonderful, Glorious. Fronted by Mark E. Everett (better known simply as E), each Eels live show offers a new experience. If lead songs from the new record are anything to go by, expect rumbling drums and a grittier rock sound. eelstheband.com

Health // Back pain

Ask an Osteopath Q: My upper back gets very stiff and achy after sitting at my desk all day; can you recommend any exercises to help with this?

T

his is one of the most common complaints that people come to me with. Prolonged sitting in one position, particularly when using a desktop computer or laptop, can cause joint stiffness and muscle fatigue of the upper back and neck, as well as leading to postural changes such as rounded shoulders. Here are some simple exercises you can do to relieve such symptoms and help improve your posture: Pectoral stretches – Your pectorals (chest muscles) can become tight with sustained activities that involve reaching forward, for example when using a computer for long periods. To stretch your pectorals, stand in a doorway with your forearm flat against the doorframe, elbow level with your shoulder; take half a step forward with the leg nearest the doorframe; twisting at the hips, gently turn your upper body away from the doorframe until a gentle stretch is felt across the front of the chest/ shoulder; hold for 30 seconds then repeat on the other side. Start with 3 reps on each arm, alternating sides. Rhomboid exercises – The same sustained reachingforward activities described above can over-stretch your rhomboids (muscles in your back, between your shoulder blades), causing them to become fatigued and achy. Strengthening them will provide support for your upper back and neck and complement the pectoral stretches in improving a rounded-shoulder posture. Stand/sit with a straight back and your hands on your hips; slowly draw your elbows backwards so that your shoulder blades

move towards each other; hold for 3 seconds then return to neutral. Start with 10 reps. Upper back mobility – The following exercise can be very effective in improving mobility in the joints of your upper spine, which can become stiff due to a lack of movement. Link your fingers behind your neck, bring your elbows together (or as close as you can comfortably get them) at eye level and draw a figure of 8 repeatedly with your elbows using small, slow, fluid movements. Do this for about 30 seconds and ensure your lower back is supported in an upright chair to really focus the exercise on the upper back. Try doing these exercises at least twice a day but listen to your body and don’t overdo it. Also, remember to take regular breaks from your computer to get up and move about throughout the day! Do you have a health question to ask an osteopath? Send your emails to: ross@southdowns-osteopathy.co.uk or tweet your questions to @InsideBrighton. Ross will do his best to answer all questions, even if they do not get published in the magazine! INSIDE MAGAZINE | 17

Hitchcock

Directed by Tom Twyker, Lana & Andy Watchowski Starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry & Jim Broadbent Released 22nd February

Directed by Sacha Gervasi | Starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren & Scarlett Johansson Released 8th February

ased on David Mitchell’s award winning 2004 novel, the film adaptation of Cloud Atlas has the epic task of weaving together six seemingly separate interconnecting stories scoping vast amounts of time, exploring how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance interfold dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. The elite cast of actors each take on several very different characters throughout the film, with stunning costume and make up making them often unrecognizable from one scene to the next. The film is directed by Matrix creators The Watchowskis along with Tom Twyker, and features incredible special effects alongside beautiful art direction.

Anthony Hopkins steps into the shoes of Alfred Hitchcock, with Helen Mirren at his side as long suffering but staunchly loyal wife Alma Reville. Though at the top of their creative game as filmmakers, disquieting insinuations about it being time to retire lead Hitch to adapt the lurid horror novel Psycho. With their house mortgaged to fund the feature, Alma finally loses patients with his roving eye and controlling habits with his actresses.

LAWLESS

Out now

ohn Hillcoat’s latest film Lawless is a cut-throat gangster-western, set during the prohibition period of depression-era Virginia. For the Bondurant brothers (Tom Hardy as the legendary immortal Forrest, and Shia LaBeouf as the youngest, eager to please brother Jack) business is good as they run their successful moonshining factory, supplying half the county with illegal liquor. Their wealth soon raises eyebrows with the authorities, as the meticulous and sadistic special deputy Rakes (Guy Pearce) becomes intent on ending their defiance. Based on the 2008 true story novel The Wettest County in the World, the story was written for screen and scored by Nick Cave, who is a long-time collaborator of Hillcoat’s.

A Stress Free Wedding...

W

ell I’m afraid there is no such thing even for someone as organised as me! Just by the nature of the event and the expectations it creates – “the happiest day of your life” means that we are naturally going to feel stressed about it but there are some things you can do to limit it. 1. The MOST important thing to remember is this is YOUR day, this is the one day in your life when it’s all about YOU & your intended. This is NOT the day to make your family’s dreams come true - don’t be bulldozed into doing things to keep others happy. 2. You will find there are times when EVERYONE has an opinion of what you “should” do. Rather than offend and cause yourself more grief, thank them for their opinion, take yourself away from the situation putting some distance between you and then return and say you’ll consider their suggestion once you and your intended have discussed it together. 3. There will be moments that others will want to or even feel they have the right to share. Decide beforehand, what you are prepared to compromise on and what you are not. So…maybe you’d rather just go for a dress fitting with the girls but your Mum will be mortified? Is this something you’re prepared to bend on? Perhaps she could come to the first one just with you so she feels special and then you do the “girly thing” next fitting?

4. You will already have ideas about venues, menus, guests, outfits etc. but it will be the tiny details that will make your day that extra bit special. Ask your friends what they did that still stands out to them? Was there something they wish they’d done? You can’t do everything but take your time – you’re creating your dream day. 5. Once your day is over it will be the memories that will remain with you so a good photographer who can capture the day the way you want it recorded is worth their weight in gold. Do your research, meet up with them and be sure that they understand what you want. The best piece of advice that I was given was to make sure at some point during the celebrations, my now husband and I should stand back away from everyone and just look at all the people there, celebrating & sharing our happy day and enjoying the moment – I will never forget that moment. Finally, as much as you want the day to be perfect, things will go wrong, things will be forgotten but those aren’t the things you’ll remember and you’ll look back and wonder why you spent all those months stressing about it. So give yourself a break, do the very best you can but remember the reason you’re actually there – because you love each other and that’s all that matters!
