Brighton • Hove • Worthing • And growing...

With summer coming to an end we can look back at the sun-soaked action packed months we enjoyed, and as the weather changes we can’t help feeling excitement for all of the little things that autumn brings with it; knitted jumpers and bobble hats, homemade soup with crusty bread, the leaves in the park covering the ground in delicious shades of orange, brown and red, the smell of bonfires in the air, fireworks and toffee apples, pumpkins, ghosts and ghouls and the first whispers of the magic word, Christmas… For Brighton, Hove and Worthing there’s plenty of events this autumn to look forward to, with Brighton’s Comedy Festival, CINECITY and a host of sensational fairs. Also in this issue we have the usual mix of theatre, music, food & drink and health & wellbeing, plus head to our film pages where we have a competition with Brighton Marina’s Cineworld, with 4 tickets up for grabs. S

wedish duo The Knife bring their Shaking the Habitual Show to Brighton as part of their first tour in seven years. Joined onstage by a large group of dancers and musicians, the conceptual performance will feature songs from this year’s newly released album alongside a visual spectacle which has been described as “an absurdist sci-fi rave, complete with retro-futurist instruments, strobe lights and glow-sticks”. theknife.net

THE GROWLERS 31st October | The haunt We’re expecting things to get spooky this Halloween as The Growlers return to Brighton for their second show of the year, this time up scaling slightly to The Haunt. The band have perfected their take on 60s surf-garage pop, with echoes of psychedelia and their self-titled ‘bent sound’. thegrowlers.com

The now three-piece Sigur Ros bring their brand of Icelandic post-rock to fill the Brighton Centre. This year has seen them touch on a slightly darker sound with the release of album Kveikur at the beginning of the summer; however fans of the band’s usual cinematicscale ambient sound will not be disappointed. sigur-ros.co.uk

CRYSTAL STILTS 23rd November | Green Door Store The recent release of new album Nature Noir marks the third full length record release from the Brooklyn band, this time taking a more subdued, stripped back direction whilst holding close to their signature sounds, marked with tinges of retro references with tracks like Future Folklore reminiscent of The Velvet Underground. crystalstilts.com

FOOD & DRINK

FOOD & DRINK Kim Chandler enjoys a taste of NYC on Brighton seafront.

A

s the summer draws to a close, it’s all about finding some exciting new places to hang out in, eat good food and enjoy a drink. The New Club opened its doors on Brighton seafront in March, and combines an independent coffee house with a stylish NYC eatery. The team have done their research. Having travelled far and wide in search of the best Deep South barbecue food and cutting edge creative diners, they’ve pooled their knowledge and experience into The New Club. I visited on a blustery Tuesday night and found the bar staff eager to get experimenting on their cocktail list. The list was impressive to say the least - a cocktail for every occasion, there’s even a Breakfast cocktail of bacon infused vodka - I recommend the espresso cocktail. The wave of new burger places opening in the city doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and with MEATliquor’s arrival, competition is fierce. The New Club’s burgers are getting quite a name for themselves. Head chef Tom who spent 6 years working for Gordon Ramsay at Pétruse London, is keen however that people know this isn’t strictly a burger joint.

We started with some ‘small plates’ around the £7 mark, including potted crab which was moist and delicious, followed by buttermilk soaked BBQ’d halloumi with pomegranate and a crunchy peanut sauce which really was exceptional. I should say at this stage that all food is made from scratch on the premises; they even re-hang and smoke their own meat. This pays off in the deep, smoky flavours of the pulled pork, served simply and unaccompanied in its dish. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about when it came to The New Club’s burgers, so I ordered a ‘dirty’ one. Served medium-rare and accompanied with my chosen side of lightly battered pickles, I could see what made this burger special. The New Club has kicked things off to a very good start, their menus are experimental and brilliant and the passion in the kitchen is clear for anyone to see. Staff are friendly and attentive yet relaxed, getting the vibe just right. Let’s show this new kid on the block some support. THE RUN UP To Christmas

Y

es, I know it’s only October and you don’t want to think about Christmas just yet! but actually all I’m suggesting is you just think about the preceding months!

Some of you will have already experienced the ‘back to school’ mayhem, some of you will already be counting the days and making plans for the next holiday, some of you will be planning Christmas and all that it brings, but whatever you’re dealing with, one thing’s for sure, there are a busy few months ahead. So... how do we make it more manageable? What can we put in place? Maybe it’s as simple as taking some time out to plot in your diary the significant events between now and then? Are there any work goals you need to achieve? Can you add those deadlines to your diary? Have you got friends coming to stay? Are you going to be visiting relatives? Are there occasions you and your family traditionally celebrate, such as bonfire night, Halloween, any anniversaries? If you plot all the known factors into your diary you

can then make sure you leave some space for the inevitable Christmas preparations, whether it be buying some presents each month rather than all in one go, or working out what you’re going to need to buy for the festivities in advance so you don’t have the horrendous rush right at the crucial point! I know planning in advance isn’t everyone’s idea of fun but believe it or not, it does make life less stressful and why put yourself through it? For those who like to be spontaneous, well, as ironic as it seems, planning some space for spontaneity is also a great idea. If you amble along with no real preparation, you will find every waking moment filled to the brim. If you plan the next few months, you can afford to leave some time free for any invitations that come along that might take your fancy or just to decide to have a completely chilled day. All in all, you don’t have to think about Christmas just yet, but as it tends to be a stressful time for most, it does help to be organized and plan ahead! HEALTH

Get ready for a healthier winter HEALTH & WELLBEING

A

utumn sees the start of cold and flu season, so keep those germs at bay by giving your immune system a boost! Eating the right foods can enhance your body’s natural defences and help fight infection. A healthy immune system requires a sufficient number of white blood cells to be produced to detect and fight infections, but you can also decrease the chances of germs entering your body if your respiratory system, digestive system and skin are all healthy, as they provide a physical barrier against infection. Orange-fleshed vegetables and squashes, such as carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins, contain carotenoids. Carotenoids are converted to Vitamin A in our bodies, which helps to keep the skin healthy and resilient to infection. A variety of fruit and vegetables contain Vitamin C, which has been shown to lower the incidence of colds and other respiratory infections. Apples contain high levels and research has shown that they are particularly good at protecting against colds, flu and other viruses. Beef, pork, poultry, oysters, milk and yoghurt are rich in zinc. Evidence suggests zinc may be more effective than vitamin C at protecting against colds and reducing their severity. It boosts the immune system by

aiding white blood cell production and wound healing. Yoghurt has the added benefit of containing probiotic bacteria, which prevent infection-causing bacteria from accumulating in the gut. Oysters (and other shellfish) also contain selenium, which helps the body produce cytokines. L-theanine, found in green and black tea, increases the amount of a cytokine known as interferon. Cytokines help white blood cells to identify and attack germs. Chicken soup is not only comforting; it also has proven benefits in improving chesty symptoms. It contains cysteine, which stops white cells accumulating in lungs, while the salty stock helps to thin the mucus. Oily fish contains omega-3; its anti-inflammatory properties increase airflow in the lungs and protect against respiratory infections. Mushrooms, garlic, oats and barley all have antibacterial properties, as well as helping to stimulate the immune system. Manuka honey has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Finally, it is not just the right food that will keep you well this winter. Regular exercise boosts white blood cell production and ensuring you keep warm through the cold months means your body can use more of its energy to fight bugs! Do you have a health question to ask?
