I admit that in the beginning I thought the coaching sessions would be a waste of time, but now I have a totally different opinion of them. My coach is simply amazing and not only have I lost weight, but I’ve learnt so much about myself from our sessions. I am happier and healthier with a far more positive

BUSINESS PROFILE Sam Harrington-Lowe For the past ten years she’s co-owned and run successful events company Pretty Clever but has just sold out to move on to pastures new. We catch up with her to find out more…

B

righton businesswoman Sam HarringtonLowe may be a familiar face to some of you. Forging a path as a pioneering business owner, she has a long history of working in high profile positions in Sussex, running businesses and editing magazines, and she’s a committed participant in the Brighton business events scene. We asked her what was afoot… “I’ve had such an amazing time with Pretty Clever but it was time to do something new,” she explains. “I’ve been in business with Sam Nash since we set up ten years ago, and she’s taken the business on, which is ideal as it’s in the best hands possible. I’m really proud of the business we built up and I’m glad she’s taken it on rather than anyone else. “She and I haven’t parted company though; we still have another business, Clever Destinations, which exists specifically to bring business into the UK from overseas, and I love that side of things. The international events are always a bit quirky, and we do events not just here in Brighton, but London, the midlands, north of England – even Edinburgh! I’m enjoying putting some energy into expanding that now. The plan is to really build that up, and it’s growing really quickly. It’s exciting” It’s not all about running businesses though; Sam has found that she’s naturally branched out into other

projects. “I’ve had some teaching experience in the past and recently helped BIMM write a brand new BA (Hons) course in event management, which I now lecture on part time,” she says. “Teaching and training is something I’ve naturally grown towards and I’m really enjoying that side of things, passing on my years of experience in the field. But my first love has always been writing and I’m immersing myself in that more and more now. “I have over 20 years behind me as a journalist, and together with all the other experiences I’ve had growing my own business, I’m finding that there’s a real market for the kind of skills I’ve got. Whether it’s in training or consultancy, copywriting or designing websites – yes, I do that too – I’m finding that I’ve actually got more work than I can handle at the moment. But I’m keen to work with small businesses to mentor them, or help them with marketing, copywriting, content for their sites – I’ve got so much experience to share.” If you think Sam can help you, check out her website – www.samhl.co.uk – but get in quick! “I thought when I stepped back from of Pretty Clever I’d have some spare time,” she laughs, “but it hasn’t happened yet!”

Our brand new Artist Profile feature showcases the work of talented local artists, designers and makers, this issue launching with a look at the art of Lisa Ridgers, L. LISA RIDGERS “I prefer to work spontaneously, drawing inspiration from many sources, including my love of the outdoors and travelling. Also, the process of the work itself; which, by it's very nature, can often produce unexpected and delightful results.

L

isa Ridgers is an established full time artist who has been living in the USA for the past 20 years and painting professionally since the year 2000. Her multi-media works have been described as a fusion of organic palette, natural elements, and inner meditations. Lisa's work is collected internationally, by both private and corporate collectors, and has also been seen on various television shows and advertisements including 'The Big Bang Theory' and 'Two and a Half Men'. She is published internationally by Third and Wall Art Group based in Seattle, USA. While continuing her relationships with galleries and representation in the

States, she has recently returned home to the South Coast of England. She is thrilled to now offer her work more extensively in Europe to the public and the trade. Please visit the website for representation details, upcoming exhibitions and events. www.lisaridgers.co.uk info@lisaridgers.co.uk 07427 668700

L BAINES “It is not that I do not want people to know who I am …… it is more about the freedom that I have when working under the name of Baines. I know that when I step up to a blank canvas, there is no pressure, I am painting for me and only me, the outcome is irrelevant. It is an intensely, satisfying feeling and completely liberating!”

L

Baines is the assumed name of an internationally established and widely published artist of nearly 15 years. The work is experimental in nature and allows the artist complete freedom of expression.

The use of acrylic paint, spray paint, and acrylic markers in brilliant hues; mixed with torn imagery and built up

layers, is meant to remind the viewer of the colours of life in the midst of the turmoil of daily life. You can see more of L Baines' work as it becomes available by visiting www.lbainesart.com

ARTS & CULTURE

Ian Hodgson "The drawing techniques that I use expose other, seemingly invisible layers, and here the drawing process acts as a metaphor for the physical and psychological experience of my journey, as fragments of what went before are revealed on the paper."

E

xamining how identity is imprinted with memories connected to place, objects and relationships creates a framework for the drawings of Ian Hodgson to develop. In some works architecture is the defining presence, whereas in others, figures or objects inhabit the space but all refer to the transformative process of journey. Most recently Ian won the Finest Drawing Award for 'Chrysalis 1' (top left) in the National Open Art Competition. You can see more of his work by visiting: www.ian-hodgson.co.uk

Monika Jakimauskaite

M

onika Jakimauskaite currently lives and works in Brighton. She has been selected from thousands of artists in the UK and internationally to present her work in West London based gallery Debut Contempory. After studying for a BA Degree in Textile design at Lithuania Academy of Arts, Jakimauskaite also completed the Black and White photography course at Brighton University and the Printed Textiles course in Brighton and Hove City College. Photography is Jakimauskaite's passion and textile is her craft – the result is - photography prints on fabrics, using embroidery and applique to extend details. This enables her to capture special sights and moments from every day. The result is a beautiful, totally original combination of mixed media. With landscapes and architecture as her main subjects, she uses bright, vibrant colours combined with intricate details, such as ornaments, to bring her artworks alive. The result is unusual and very intriguing.

Monika now exhibits her work regularly in exhibitions and art fairs both in the UK and in Lithuania. Recently she had her first solo exhibition in Lithuania, entitled Moments, and is currently getting ready for the Black and White exhibitions tour in Lithuania. After being shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize and Wells Art Contemporary competitions, she has appeared on National TV in Lithuania and has been published in Aesthetica, Brighton`s Arty, and Laima Magazines, amongst others. To see more work by Monika Jakimauskaite visit the Saturday Debut on the 14th December, 12 – 5pm at the Debut Contemporary Gallery, 82 Westbourne Grove, London, W2 5RT where there will also be a printed photography, embroidery and appliqué workshop. HEALTH

ASK AN OSTEOPATH Q

“My work is very seasonal, involving lots of heavy lifting and worldwide delivery of goods in a very short space of time. Many deliveries are very physically demanding and I find that each year I am increasingly suffering with low back pain as a result. I am past retirement age and not in the best shape (I have a big round belly!) but I don’t want to quit my job, so I would like some advice on helping my back pain this year” (Mr. S. Claus).

will reduce the strain. Constant bending down to put parcels under trees will aggravate the wear and tear in your back, so try bending at the knees more, rather than making your back do all the work. Does your back ache when driving your delivery vehicle? Try adjusting the seat so that you aren’t reaching too far for the reins and your low back is supported. If your seat doesn’t have an adjustable lumbar support, you can buy lumbar support cushions relatively inexpensively.

Due to your age group, weight and the physical nature of your job, your low back pain may be due to wear and tear of the joints (osteoarthritis). Excessive use of these worn joints can cause a flare-up of inflammation, which can be very painful, but there are certainly ways to manage the condition and reduce the frequency and severity.

Being overweight increases the risk of back pain, so cutting down the calories and eating more healthily will help – losing just 4 pounds takes 16 pounds of pressure off your spine! Perhaps you could mostly snack on Rudolph’s carrots if you’re feeling peckish, enjoying mince pies as an occasional treat rather than indulging every time you stop to make a delivery.

It sounds like the nature of your work aggravates your back and, although you don’t want to stop working, there are things you can change about how you work. Instead of carrying a heavy sack of parcels over one shoulder, consider a good quality rucksack with adjustable back height and strap length – distributing the load more evenly across your back and shoulders

You should find that a few small changes to your lifestyle and work habits will make a big difference to your back pain, meaning you’ll have a much merrier Christmas once you’ve finished your deliveries!
