JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN 17th April | Komedia, Brighton

THE JULIE RUIN 26th May | Coalition

Joan Wasser came to prominence after playing strings for the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Anthony and the Johnsons and Lou Reed, before creating her own music under the moniker, Joan as Police Woman. In a change from her usual soul-baring style, latest record The Classic (her fifth studio release) is loaded with playful energy, with songs like lead track Holy City featuring retro Motown-esque blasts of horns and what has been described as ‘doowop beatboxing’. joanaspolicewoman.com

Kathleen Hanna first created her Julie Ruin pseudonym in 1997 for a self-titled solo record while on Hiatus from Bikini Kill. The feminist punk riot grrrl icon has now joined forces with Carmine Covelli, Sara Landeau, Kathi Wilcox, and Kenny Mellman to finish what she started, recrafting the solo recordings from the Julie Ruin record into a live full band set. thejulieruinband.com

MUSIC

THE GREAT ESCAPE Festival

8th - 10th May - Venues across Brighton

Europe’s leading festival for new music brings hundreds of bands and artists to Brighton for a 3-day extravaganza across 35 venues dotted all over the city. Music lovers looking to discover the next big thing are spoilt for choice with acts spanning all genres taking to the stage; we asked the people behind the festival to reveal their staff top picks of who to look out for this May.

JUNGLE Despite the mystery surrounding the London collective’s true identities, Jungle have been going viral with their neo-soulful, hypnotic grooves as heard on singles The Heat and Platoon. After picking up support and a number of plays at Radio 1, including Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens, the duo - who came together just last May - can already boast a string of sell-out shows, and a Sound Of 2014 long list nod.

SUVI Suvi is one of many Finnish artists featuring at the festival, which this year partners with Music Finland, a new organization dedicated to promoting awareness and the success of Finnish music. Suvi’s orchestral pop, such as heard in her sublimely catchy and bittersweet debut Bleeding for Your Love, has garnered critical acclaim, reaching the Top 10 on the Hype Machine’s Most Popular Chart.

DROWNERS Despite their many British influences including a moniker taken from one of Suede’s singles, and a pretty hefty obsession with The Smiths, it is in fact New York that raised Drowners. Their debut self-titled album is full of jangly guitars that sound straight from the 80s, although their pure ‘garage-rock fury’ –particularly when playing live - brings them back to the 21st century.

JAAKO EINO KALEVI Another of this year’s Finnish acts, Jaako Eino Kalevi has already long been considered one of Finland’s most promising young artists. A selftaught multi-instrumentalist, Jaakko plays, sings and produces all of his own material, which blends murky funk and folk into softly psychedelic dream-pop.

MUSIC

19

JOEL COMPASS 20 year old Londoner Joel Compass creates atmospheric R&B that brings to mind the likes of Drake and Tyler, The Creator. Lyrically, Compass’ music presents a young man navigating his way through life, mistakes and all, although the slick vocals and production suggest a maturity beyond his years, and with songs such as Forgive Me named Radio 1’s ‘Track of the day’ it seems that chart success is imminent .

MØ Danish electro-pop singer songwriter MØ is often compared to vocalists such as Grimes and Purity Ring. There is an effortlessly pure quality to her vocals, as is often the case with Scandinavian pop, which are as good on record as on stage at her energetic live shows. Among the latest tracks taken from debut album No Mythologies to follow, look out for her lush, slowed-down version of Spice Girl’s Say You’ll Be There.

Tickets for this year’s festival are available from greatescapefestival.com along with full line up information.

TIME for a spring clean

O

h yes, we see the first glimmer of some sunshine, a few spring flowers peaking through in the garden and suddenly we feel the optimism that seemed to disappear over the last few dark months. Spring-cleaning might seem a little old fashioned but believe me, it’s incredibly therapeutic. I don’t mean that you necessarily have to clean your home from top to bottom although that’s very satisfying, but maybe it’s time for a de-clutter?

So… • Be prepared before you start, have plenty of refuse sacks to put rubbish or charity shop offerings into. Chose a day that you can crank up the music (or enjoy the silence) without too many interruptions. Make sure you indulge in some to treats to enjoy in those well-earned breaks. Make this a pleasurable experience. • Start with one room and if you are just de-cluttering, start with the cupboards and places that aren’t on show. Get EVERYTHING out and sort into piles of

what’s to stay, what’s to be donated and what is just plain old rubbish and bag up accordingly. • Don’t be daunted by your task, it doesn’t have to be done in a day, in fact that’s unlikely if you’re really thorough. Be satisfied that you’ve done one or two rooms brilliantly and set aside another day to do the next room(s). • Be respectful of others belongings, maybe encourage the family to do their bit but explain what you’re trying to achieve rather that bully them into it! • Don’t forget the “if it hasn’t got a home it goes in here” drawer, the “man” drawer the “somewhere safe & just in case” drawers we’ve all got them! You could be surprised at what you find. See this exercise as a spring detox; we start the year detoxing ourselves, now it’s time for our homes. You’ll feel lighter and a sense of space and order will creep back in. Kate Tilston Life Coach - www.Katetilston.co.uk

HEALTH

PUT A Spring in your step

S

pring is in the air! It’s getting warmer, the sun is shining, the bees are buzzing, the birds are singing… What more excuse do you need to get out there on foot and enjoy our vibrant city and surrounding countryside – and get healthier in the process? I’m talking about a very effective exercise that benefits the heart, circulation, lungs, muscles, joints and even the health of your spine, and it’s something most of us can do, even if only for a short distance at a time – walking! But how much walking do we need to do to reap the benefits? It is recommended to walk 6,000 steps a day to improve health and 10,000 steps a day to lose weight. The average adult walking speed is about 3 miles per hour and the average person takes around 2,000 steps per mile, so 6,000 steps equates to a recommended daily walking distance of around 3 miles (about an hour of normal walking), although this can be spread throughout the day. Don’t despair if you can’t fit a whole hour of walking into your day, because every little helps improve your health. On average, every minute spent walking can extend your life expectancy by up to 2 minutes, and

increasing the amount you walk by just 20 minutes a day can burn off 7lb of body fat over a year! If weight loss is your goal, longer, moderately-paced walks of around 40 minutes are best, whereas shorter, brisker walks of around 25 minutes are best for conditioning your heart and lungs. As a person walks faster, their stride length increases, burning more calories. In fact, you would use the same amount of energy walking at a speed of around 4 miles per hour (walking a mile in 15 minutes) as you would running the same distance (with the added benefit of creating less stress on your joints) – it just takes a little longer! But it gets better, because research has shown that over the same distance, some walkers experience almost twice the reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol and risk of heart disease than runners. Walking also reduces the risk of developing diabetes, protects against osteoporosis and bone fractures, reduces stress and depression, reduces the risk of certain cancers and even improves cancer survival rates. So take a step towards better health and make some time in your day to get up and walk! Do you have a health question to ask? Email: ross@southdowns-osteopathy.co.uk
