BRIGHTON ETSY CRAFT PARTY

All images © Bob Prosser

6th June | The Clarendon Centre, Brighton

T

he Etsy Craft Party is an annual event by Etsy, a global online marketplace for handmade goods. Every year people from around the world come together in locally organised Craft Parties on the same day to create and inspire each other, and this year the Brighton Etsy Team are hosting their second Craft Party event which will be taking place on Friday 6th June at The Clarendon Centre, 47 New England Street, Brighton. In a nutshell, the Craft Party is a celebration of meeting and making, of creativity and community. The aim is to get people interested and excited in craft and handmade items; it’s an opportunity to pick up a new skill, meet likeminded individuals and most importantly have fun! The theme of this year’s party is ‘Recapture’; and is all about bringing new meaning to old photographs. There’ll be plenty of craft supplies on hand to help unleash your inner creative; with needle and thread or paint and pen, old photographs can be transformed into new handmade heirlooms.

As well as the opportunity to get crafty throughout the evening, there will also be games and competitions with prizes for the winners, a Big Booth Boutique Photobooth, licensed bar, music, cake and free goody bags for all attendees. The Clarendon Centre is a five minute walk from both Brighton Railway Station and the NCP car parking on London Road, situated on New England Street next to the New England Quarter development. This is a fantastic venue as its size means it’s big enough for everyone to attend – and bring their friends too – with room for all of the crafty activities and more that have been planned by the Brighton Etsy Team! Tickets to join in with the fun are just £5 each (+ booking fee), available from brightonetsyteam.wordpress.com, where you’ll also find more information about the Craft Party. ARTS & CULTURE

Y

ROMANY MARK BRUCE

ou may already unknowingly be familiar with the work of Romany Mark Bruce, whose public work includes ‘Tay’, the dramatic landmark found in New Steine Gardens. The sculpture, which since it’s unveiling in 2009 has become synonymous with the space it inhabits, features two arching figures, entwined but never quite touching, and was selected by ballot to be created for the gardens as a public memorial for those affected by HIV/Aids. This striking, expressive style can be seen throughout the work of Romany, who creates sculptures modelled in clay, and cast in bronze or cold-cast bronze resin. His pieces are mainly inspired by the human form,

ranging from statuesque indoor torsos to heroic outdoor landmarks. Describing himself as a ‘Sculptor who paints’, his paintings are created with a palette knife and feature chaotic impasto forms. As well as many exhibitions as part of Brighton festival, Romany’s sculptures and paintings have been acquired by collectors worldwide, from countries including the USA, Australia, Hong Kong and the Middle East, and all over Europe. THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT SUMMER

T

o be very honest with you, summer is NOT my favourite season. I know many of you will find that strange, but for me autumn is the time of year I feel my happiest. HOWEVER….I can understand why so many people look forward to the summer and what it can bring. For me, summer is about longer evenings; being able to go for a walk along the seafront at 8 O’clock at night, meeting friends for a glass of something and sitting outside enjoying fresh air and the company. I love being able to do my Walk & Talk coaching sessions with my clients, striding along the seafront sorting out their action plans whilst enjoying the scenery. Summer to me is outdoors stuff, whatever that may be - taking every opportunity to be out and in it! I do think we have high expectations and that if the weather doesn’t go according to plan, it can throw us into doom and gloom, so perhaps if we enjoyed it for what it is regardless and prepare for the inevitable “rainy day” we might get a bit more out of it? On the days that it does rain or is slightly gloomy, I take the opportunity to do the chores and tasks that I would

resent doing if it’s a lovely sunny day. Instead of cursing the rain I enjoy curling up with a book, watching a film and making the most of my self-enforced imprisonment. I do think it’s good to plan and have some ideas for those unexpected rainy days, as it means you’re not completely floored when it happens; but perhaps we should try and live in the moment a bit more and practice some spontaneity. If it’s a lovely summer evening don’t just sit in front of the TV, get out there, even if it’s for a short walk or a quick drink in the local. Think about what you can do that’s fun and relatively cost effective; a walk along the seafront and an ice cream? A picnic on the beach? It doesn’t have to be expensive or well planned: grab your things and go! So what does summer mean to you? What do you do differently? Maybe you’re looking forward to a holiday or just time out with the kids and seeing more of friends and family? This summer let’s try and live more in the moment, enjoy it for what it is, whatever that is for you. We live in a beautiful part of the world and sometimes we need to remind ourselves just how lucky we are! Kate Tilston Life Coach - www.Katetilston.co.uk

HEALTH

SLEEP MATTERS!

A

re you sleeping enough? Chances are, the answer is “no”! A study on sleeping habits found that less than 50% of people sleep well at night in the UK, and around 25% of us experience poor sleep before a workday. Modern life can make a good night’s sleep difficult but it is incredibly important for our health and wellbeing. During sleep our bodies are able to rest and repair themselves, our immune systems are improved and our brains are able to organize and consolidate memories. But why do our bodies and brains work better after sleep? Scientists have discovered that the brain undergoes essential cleaning processes when we are asleep and the brain is less active. The brain eliminates toxins by flushing them out into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that bathes our brains. When neural activity decreases during sleep, the neurons shrink significantly, allowing channels to open up between the cells. CSF is pumped into these channels, which washes out the area around the neurons. This process requires a lot of energy, which is probably why it can only happen during sleep, when less energy is being used for other brain functions. In fact, while awake this cleaning process is only running at 5% of its full capacity.

A lack of sleep can therefore seriously compromise this process, leading to an accumulation of waste products from brain activity that can eventually damage brain cells and lead to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. There seem to be more serious consequences of regular sleep deprivation than once thought, including a propensity to gain weight and a potential increase in the risk of stroke; and regularly sleeping for less than 6 hours is associated with a reduced lifespan. Sleep deprivation can also affect libido, mood, memory, general physical and mental performance, and energy levels. If you’re not getting enough sleep, think about activities leading up to bedtime that could be affecting you. 24hour accessibility of the internet has become a significant sleep distraction, so try to cut down on that and other stimulation before bed. Avoid drinking coffee after 2pm and swap the bedtime tea for a warm, milky drink. Most people find that quietness creates a more restful sleeping environment; a cool, dark room is also more conducive to a good night’s sleep. Do you have a health question to ask?
